for those who don't know Malaysia well, every location in the video is situated in SS2, Petaling Jaya, a suburb in the Klang Valley which is about 25-30 minutes drive to the KL city centre. All the places Sonny ate at are within walking distance of each other in a large square surrounded by plenty of restaurants around it. SS2 is really a food haven and I've been going there for decades since my school days in the 80s.

$100 is like RM460 for most of us malaysian that is our 1 month worth of grocery, so no way one can spend RM460 on street food alone, but great video as always, entertaining 🎉
That's amazing. So Malaysians wouldn't normally be able to enjoy these meals regularly. Come to think of it that's basically the same thing in the US. When I was working in Washington state I would treat myself to a favorite food truck once per week. The meals varied from USD15 - USD20 (or RM70 - RM93.50) which is quite expensive for a mid-day meal. But in Malaysia with the exchange rate that would be a king's meal. Yet if you were coming from Malaysia to the US you'd basically have nothing. Imagine trying to afford lunch for RM20 (USD4.28). You couldn't do it! I just find that fascinating because these Malaysian meals look incredible for the cost. Economies are weird beasts.

Indeed we could enjoy but not spending 100dollars a day, as we Malaysian dont really care as it wouldn't go wrong for street food that has a long queue, we definitely would try something new from there everyday instead.

Hey Sunny! I've been told that the Hainanese were mostly cooks employed by the British during colonial Malaya. That's why they have their own 'spin' to classic western takes. Unverified though! Glad you enjoyed your meals and selamat datang!

The queue you saw at the beginning was for Uncle Pao's nyonya mixed rice. He serves a variety of very good dishes and there is always a long queue at 4pm onwards. He is usually sold out by 8pm.

That Durian shop showing a legit Malaysian durian hospitality. When he enters the shop he didn't even pick or buy the durian but the owner still picked one, opened & show it to him eventhough he wasn't sure sonny gonna buy it. Malaysia will always be the king of durian & durian hospitality. It a pleasure and proud moment that our people being the best hosts for durians! ❤️🇲🇾

A bit of history to Hainanese Western Food: Hainanese group of Chinese dialect people used to work as cooks for the British before independent. So they HAD the skill and knowledge to cook steaks and lamb chops. That skill kind of dwindled over time but they maintain that reputation. My grandparents (both Hainanese) can cook wonderful lamb chops and mash potatoes with killer gravy.

Spent all of January researching and writing on Penang street food as intangible cultural heritage, on exchange from the University of Western Australia to U.S.M, Penang, and staying in George Town. Was magnificent!

I'm American, but Malaysia has been my home since 2003.
With regard to the "danger" of things like the blood cockles, I've learned during my time here that Americans are kinda uptight with regard to food safety. There are a lot of things here that most Americans would feel is unsafe. However, instances of food poisoning and other food-related injuries or illnesses don't seem more common here than they did during my 30+ years in the US.
If you and your team have plans to visit Penang Island aka Food Paradise of Malaysia. Will be more than honoured to host all of you bringing yall for the best food only locals will go! Also Penang is famous for our Char Koay Teow, you'll never eat else where anymore once you tried ours. All the best, Ahh Peace..

You can’t tell from the video of course, but there are some smells and flavours on that noodle dish that’s unimaginable and therefore not described by anyone who makes a video on it. They all just say it’s nice

Char Kuey Teow was my absolute favorite and the stingray was the best, I’ve tried stingray since and it’s never been the same.
We were warned against eating cockles so we avoided them. Our friends who were traveling with scared us off from trying durion, now I wish I would’ve tried it.
We Malaysians LOVE durians! Pls give it a try!
i have eaten cockles since kid(but not too much/always).. didnt know its dangerous until today🤣🤣🤣
In other countries, because of fresh sea food one dish would cost 45€ + tips, but in Malaysia with only 10€ you can feed a whole family and a neighbors if they join in.

“Hainanese” Western Food? 🤔
I used to laugh at that. It turns out due to Malaysia's colonial past, in the 19th century, Hainanese immigrants arrived for work and many Hainanese found themselves working in service roles such as cooks, waiters, and servants in hotels, restaurants, or wealthy European households. That exposure and adaption to ingredients available to them led to the creation of Hainanese western food.

Sir, let me explain about the Hainanese Western Food.... it is not the case of "somebody watched a lot of Hollywood movies which gives the ideas what the westerners eat"... the Malaysian western food has its own origin way back during the colonial era in the late 1800 until our independence in 1950's
During that time a lot of Hainanese in Malaya worked as kitchen helper for the British officers or European planters or European tin miners.
The Brits and other Europeans taught all this Hainanese kitchen helper to cook some food that mimics the Europeans food by using local ingredients... thus came the existence of Chicken chop, chicken grill, lamb chop and bistik (beef steak) with homemade French fries...just like what you see
After we gain independence, most of the Hainanese chef lost their job and they started to open their own coffee shops (kopitiam) and introduced these western foods to the public... since then the Malaysian style western foods has gone through a lot of changes with the touch of fusions...
Hopefully all westerners understands the origin of our style of western food. It is called western food not because of our imagination but because of history....

He spend US $100.00 mean RM 470.00 With this amount can get a lot of food stuff too , if street food naturally you can't finish with this amount of money. ( depending on where you spend on & how u spend it ).

Great video. Here in Peru, those "blood cockles" (conchas negras) are a delicacy. They make one of the best ceviches..ceviche de conchas negras.
Durian is pure creamy heaven …. Nobody beats Malaysian durian

We got tomato mee/ kueh tiaw, fried bidin, kacangma chicken, fried egg manicai (money- vege), exotic food like yummy wild boar or deer meats from our local Iban, ayam pangsuh, Kolo mee, sarawak laksa, kueh chap & etc =D
I went to sarawak dari hujung ke hujung, sadly I find no delicious food... I mean laksa & kolok mee mmg sedap tapi takkan hari-hari makan tu jak like is there nothing else? cari2 traditional food pun sikda

Kudos to your producer finding an all in one place for best food. Usually people these days featuring all the fancy place with instagramable shots and a signature food which is so so. I am sure many people forgot this place. Thanks and definitely going back there.
Malaysia has a lot of great variety and it's a haven for food tourism. Penang is another destination that you can eat, but also relax at beaches in Batu Feringghi.

Sonny! If you're still in Malaysia, you really should try sinalau bakas in Sabah (East Part of Malaysia). It's roasted wild boar and you can have the soup version too. I have never seen any youtuber of food reviewer tried this before, but you're gonna need a local guy with knowledge on where to find the best stalls. Sinalau bakas is the kadazan/dusun food in Sabah, and there's bakuteh (chinese herbal pork soup) as well. 100% guaranteed that you had never tasted anything like it before :D

I miss the hawker markets so much, such great food for pennies, okay, for a couple of dollars. In Singapore, there was a guy from Germany running a stall at the Maxwell Center in Singapore that did have Swedish meatballs, does that count ? And yes, he did sell a lot because the locals had never seen them. Same market had a fantastic Indian, something like Sultan Curry, hands down the best Chicken Tikka Masala i've had and yes i've had them all over the UK as well.

13:48 It’s called chee cheong fun - pig intestine noodle. Looks like it too, but it’s just sheets of rice noodles rolled up and steamed them left like that instead of being cut up into strips.
I've been there but stayed most of the time in KLCC. Every street food I put in my mouth made me wish I can stay much longer. And yes, Malaysian fried rice is better than Chinese fried rice in my opinion.

Klang Bak Kut Teh have many branches in other parts of Klang Valley la. Going all the way to Klang is overrated.
