Film Photography Road Trip Through South Africa - Mamiya RB67 + Mamiya 7ii

- I went on a film photography road trip up to the North end of South Africa! I made a bunch of landscapes and scene images with my Mamiya 7ii and Mamiya RB67, and I shot Ektar 100 and Portra 400 on this trip. The images were scanned with a Hasselblad Flextight scanner.

I loved the mining for Kodak Gold opening. Your outfit had a very 1800’s vibe going on. My father was also a rock hound and we took many a trip into the wilds of Washington State to look for rocks and gold and even silver. I still have my dad’s geologist’s pick. I used to have an Isuzu pickup truck and used the bed as way to get above things when photographing too. I now have a Chevy full-size pickup and believe me 69 yr old me doesn’t jump up into the bed like 43 yr old me used to with the Isuzu
Wow that’s amazing Bob! I was aiming for an 1800s look haha! Thanks so much for sharing the tale of your excursions with your dad, they sound amazing and it’s super cool that those experiences somewhat mirror this one, down to the Isuzu haha! I feel like it’s alright that you don’t hop into the back for a photo anymore, you’ve lived a lot of life what with firefighting and gold prospecting! Thanks so much for stopping by once more!
Best day ever. Geology, there will be blood, and all that in a filmtube video. What a time to be alive
Ahahah glad that it hit all the right points for you man! Sometime soon I'll actually get some proper geolocial info in a video haha
There Will Be Blood happens to be one of my favourite films. Love that opening
It's one of my favorites too! A masterpiece, glad you enjoyed that little reference David!
That sky is BLUE´r than blue in these filmscans; ) Loved watching this.
Crazy how blue things get out there on a cloudless day haha! Ektar helps make things pop in some of them too!
Your videos of rural South Africa will forever be my favourite videos on the channel. I absolutely love the barron landscape and fascinating towns, but find them fairly tricky to photograph myself. So seeing you make some great photographs is always a big inspiration for me!
Thanks Jordi! Hoping to return to Aberdeen this coming winter and pick up where I left off with that series of videos haha, I find the subject matter tricky to photograph as well! The challenge ends up being part of the fun though I guess, just not fun when the light disappears at just the wrong moment siiigh! Honored to inspire though, hope you get out there again soon!
"If you want to get the photos nobody else can get, you have to go where nobody else will go." - me (Although I'm almost certain I'm subconsciously paraphrasing someone.)
Really lovely work here. Thanks for sharing.
Well said Ben! I shall attribute that quote to you going forward ahah! Thanks for checking it out, and for the excellent quote!
Last year I took a week off of work to go a road trip on my own sleeping in the car and do photography. Turns out I got absolutely terrible weather for the astrophotography I wanted to do and the only photos I got that I was really happy with was visiting a friend along the way and taking portraits of him and his flatmates in the area. On the other hand it was still a fantastic trip and I wholeheartedly recommend solo road trips :)
That sounds awesome still Dylan! The experience will be the most important part I reckon, photos come second to getting out there and seeing what the world has to offer haha, even if it is rain!
What a unique landscape Will. So lovely that you and your father go on these trips
Ahh prospecting for that sweet Kodak. Loved the story alongside the imagery :D
Gotta head out into the desert and find it myself these days the way prices are going ahah, glad you enjoyed man!
loved this one!! the colors in the gas station picture are so nice, that might be one of my favorites
Thank you Ryan! I really like it too, I just wish I'd got that last light haha!
the PTA reference was a good one.
THERE WILL BE BLOOD!!! So special so beautiful so inspiring ❤️
Let's go watch it again riiight now muahaha
Your video inspired me to take my RB on a road trip across the prairies last weekend , I was driving tho so no hard hikes haha. #SHEEPSQUAD
You're bonkers with the camera Will
Great adventure mate totally get why your dad was smoking you on the trails he’s in his element good on him when I’m with the missus doing the weekly grocery shop I dawdle round like a 90 year old then put me in the hills with a camera at golden hour and watch Hussain bolt tryn keep up with me. Top work team 📷❤️📷
Aahah that's an excellent way to describe it Paul! Although sometimes I can be in my element and still end up exhausted by things haha, gonna have to find the right golden hour to bring out my inner athlete I reckon!
@@willysheepskin haha don’t suppress the inner athlete mate 📷😂❤️
I’m enjoying these videoes from your hikes with your father! Me and my dad do the same too, he is wandering around looking at rocks, while I’m taking photographs. I like going on walks together with someone who is interested in geology or biology or just something like that. They get hung up in the small details of something, and there is usually no rush in getting to the top of the mountain or the end of the hike. Gives me more time to compose some photographs :’)
Thanks Gunnar! That's awesome that we get up to the same things haha! So true that them getting caught up in the details makes for a more interesting experience too, they get to focus on rocks we get to focus on finding a way to make a photo of rocks lol!
Same here Gunnar. A fishing or rock hounding friend will never grow impatient as I'm working my camera gear. Otherwise this activity is simply too boring for the observer.
Such a nice video this one!!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Incredible intro. I love that your hat went from protecting your head to protecting your lens as you load more film. That's sensational, and speaks volumes on where you place importance. I also like that you talk about your big backpack with all your film cameras, video/sound gear, and tripods. I also appreciate the sentiment of the just past prime gas station shot. Any photographer chasing natural light knows this grief, and hangs into these shots as momentos of our ardour. Willy Sheepskin, you inspire me with your whimsy
Thanks so much James, I’m glad that you picked up on the hat maneuver! It was more of a practical choice in the moment since those rocks would probably have destroyed the lens, but I like that you’ve made me think about it in an artistic choice way now too! Happy to hear that there’s empathy on the last light chasing front haha! Momentos of ardour is a brilliant way to describe a lot of the results one ends up walking away from a photographic excursion with by the way, gonna have to use that one in the future! Honored to inspire with the whimsy by the way, and thanks for such a lovely comment
@@willysheepskin I would be honored to hear you use my phrase 😝 inspiration is bountiful for the sharin'
Hi William, some great shots! Justin
Hi Justin! Thank you, I'm quite happy with them too haha!
PTA would be proud of the intro
Ahhh thanks man I’d have a heart attack if he ever saw it ahaha, that guy knows a thing or two about making movies I tell ya
LOVED the "There Will be Blood" intro, delightful (:
Glad you enjoyed it Ryszard! Was starting to get worried cus I kept asking people I know if they've watched it and 9/10 folks said they hadn't so I was like "damn is anyone even going to get this" ahahah
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!!!- There will be Blood. Intro was soooo good bro. Weirdly the gas station with the truck and heavy equipment may have been my faurite shot, also like the small bush of the yellow flowers. Enjoy the trip with kent, stoked to hear how it turns out. #sheepsquad #GeoSheepDad
My poor milkshake :')! Glad you enjoyed that intro man ahah, hope the vid was worth the mystery I shrouded it in when talking to you lol! I like that heavy equipment photo too hey, that was Ektar and it turned out super punchy haha! I'll be keeping you in the loop on the Kent trip front as well for sure #Ashersquaad
@@willysheepskinOh man ektar? I rarely hear about you shooting ektar. Seemed to have been the perfect stock for that shot. Kent and Will vs the world
sometimes i think im cool... but i'm not sledgehammering rocks in the actual middle of nowhere while using mamiyas cool 🤣
7:55 10:04 NICE TONES
omg i love the cat 9:40 aww
and dont worry about the missing video next week, this vid was very special :)
Ahah I'm glad you think that's cool IKA! I actually didn't even see that cat when I was making the photo, only noticed him when reviewing the video lol! Wish he'd stayed there and been a part of the picture lol!
I hope the next video is equally special haha!
What a cool trip! I appreciate the work that went in to this. Thank you for sharing. And as always, have a great day Will! 😊
Cheers Justin! Glad you enjoyed it haha, the work is worth it for the result as always! Hope you have a wonderful day also!
Beautiful 😍😍😍
Thank you kindly!
We love explore WILL!!!!!!
I love to be explore Will ahah! Cheers GPCY!
@@willysheepskin holding back the inner michael scott inside me😂😂😂
we've witnessed a rare sight indeed...Will filming a loading montage
ahah I didn't have a pickaxe to sharpen like in the movie so I figured a cheeky film loading montage would have to do!
The work you put into this is based. Had a blast watching and sharing with colleagues!
Ahh thanks Alp, I’m glad it comes across! So stoked you shared this with colleagues haha, I’m honored!
was grinning throughout the whole intro! so sick haha
So glad you liked it, and got it ahaha! I've had to tell like 8 people so far to go watch the movie cus I was doing "market research" to try find out if anyone was going to get what I was going for and like none of my friends have watched it lolol
Loved it all. Beautiful photos and footage. I think the photo of the cross with that wonderful light is specially beautiful and I loved the landscape with the sheep. Quite very special.
Thank you kindly! Wish I’d been able to stop for a photo of those sheep haha, the dust from the landscape had turned them brown it was so interesting!
@@willysheepskin 💕
Nice one man, enjoyed following along. Cool to see you and your dad out exploring. Those landscapes looked wild, great shots.
Thank you! The landscapes really were something else, hoping to see similarly exciting things on my upcoming trip!
intro too sick !
Cheers Nelson! Had fun putting it together haha!
great intro, cool dad, sick video :))
I wish you the best of luck on your future travels, I am always stunned with how beautiful nature is where you film, bet it's even prettier in real life
Excellent comment ;), thanks man! Hopefully the upcoming trip has even more mindblowing landscapes to offer and photograph! I guess you'll have to come around these parts and find out if it's prettier sometime!
@@willysheepskin thank you too, coming visiting South Africa would actually be a dream come true, maybe it'll happen some day :)
have a good one
The color of the chips(?) Right in front of the cross made me think of fp100c. Kinda like a memorium for peel apart aha
They're plastic flowers actually I think :') Pretty much impossible to tell with that level of blur though! And they do for sure have the fp100c colorway haha! RIP to that and the fuji stocks that shall continue to fall in the future sigh, hope you're having a good one Sunny!
Lovely trip and photos! I thought you will dig some kodak gold in 120 or the new cinestill under these rocks. :D
Thanks Lyubomir! And maaaan I wish I had, would've been cool to have gotten some in hand haha! Apparently we'll have it here in like two weeks though which is a lot sooner than I expected at least!
That was highly entertaining ! Following your Dad through an airport is like running a cross country race and doing parkour - this seems similar ...😂
Hahah yep pretty much like that, but worth it in this case! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey, so good video.
Great video--love the TWBB reference. I recently ordered an RB and am wondering: what tripod/head do you use with your RB? I have a 3LT Punks Brian tripod with a ball head, but wonder if I should invest in something more heavy duty with a geared head like a Manfrotto 410
Great video. I did some hiking in the franschhoek mountains. Amazing how fast you can be in the middle of nowhere. And allways rewarding landscapes. I also really liked your editing of the video. But I wouldn't like to carry all that gear in the bushveld ;-)
Oooh that sounds lovely! I'd like to go scope that area out properly sometime! I've driven through there a few times but never gone out and properly explored it! I'm hoping my insistence on carrying too much stuff on hikes gets me olympic level fit eventually ahah - that or it kills my back lol!
Beautiful work as always!! How do you find shooting with the 400 shutter on the rb67? Do you find it limiting or are you always able to just compensate with the aperture?
" So, ladies and gentlemen... if I say I'm a film man you will agree."
Ahahah I have to do something like that intro again and see if I can do that line justice lol! That'd be brilliant!
WILLY!
PAIN!
That intro tho 🤌 I very much enjoyed your milkshake man!
Glad you enjoyed it Brendon! You've lost me though ahah, what milkshake!?
Your dad is a powerhouse man. Must've had enough rocks in that bag to outweigh your camera bag! Lovely, lovely landscapes here as well man, sheeesh. I love the ones of the gas station and the house with the single light as well 👏 I've been feeling a little uninspired lately and this video actually just made me excited to shoot and I am now going for a walk to make some pictures. Thank you 🙏
@@willysheepskin LOL, that was my version of a there will be blood reference. At the end of the film I think that's his last line when he... um... you know what to the dude with a bowling pin.
@@oneill.onfilm Sheesh shows you how zonked I must've been last night that that went over my head ahaha! It's been a long week lol! Glad to have inspired you with this vidya man, look forward to seeing some more UK scenes from ya!
Now I understand why one should wear a hat. Haha. Beautiful video Will. It’s such a joy to watch ❤️
Ahah that's actually the only time I've ever worn that hat, cus I was very wary of getting roasted by that intense sun lol! Was my grandads hat, it's quite a statement lol! Glad you found the video to be a joy Sreeku! That's all I can hope for!
I would like to humbly and irrelatively say, The Mamiya C330 ProS is the greatest camera of all time. I can't explain why.
I humbly accept your opinion and resign myself to trying one out sometime haha!
Hey did you snap any portraits of your Dad out there in his element? That would’ve been rad to see….
That would've been rad! The light was terrible for portraits though out there among the rocks unfortunately haha, super harsh! And then when we got back we were both exhausted so I didn't think to snap a shot then, shall have to make one on a future adventure!
Is that Willem Verbeeck as one of your buy me a coffee members? 👀
Could very well be! Or just someone that used his name for fun, who knows haha!
MAKE MORE RB67 PORTRAITS VIDEO/// YOU ARE A PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER . DO WHAT YOU'RE GOOD AT
there will be tones
THERE WILL BE TONES 🥳
loved the video! you caught some really nice photos before the season changes. I was wondering does your dad/ parents watch your videos?
Religiously, every week. 🥰
Thanks Vely, glad you liked the images! They do indeed! So does my grandma haha!
I'm clueless, but would one find lions in the wild in South Africa? Such an inspiring vlog, thank you William 🙏🏽
Noo they're all pretty much in game reserves around here I think, there are places further up in Africa where they still roam around freely though, I'll have to look into it sometime and see if I can go spot some wild lions ahaah! Glad you enjoyed it kind fish!
I'm guessing that you guys don't have ticks down there. If I walked like that around here, I would be covered. 3 years ago, I pulled off over 150 from my dog after a hike.
We do actually have ticks! I was super worried trudging through all the brush, but when I did the customary tick check there were none to be found so I either go super lucky or maybe it's just too barren for them out there! 150 from a single hike is nightmarish though, I hope your poor doggo recovered!
Does this mean we get a lengthy video with you and Kent? The last one was excellent!
I hope so! It's probably going to be quite intense work-wise, but I'll be doing my darndest to make something cool out of it and getting Kent involved!
You Excited for kodak gold to be backordered for months??
I'm more excited that you're back on the first comment train muhahaha, but yeah hoping to get ahold of some to try out when it eventually arrives here before it sells out lol!
@@willysheepskin always enjoy the uploads😎
11:33 is this an original song? Shazam can't find it 🤔
Hi will! Im looking to get a mamiya 7 im based in london and ive found one for £1900-2000. Would you say its a good deal or should i wait and save for a 7ii. Ive got a big try coming up this summer and have been saving for a while for a camera so i just want a second opinion! and if you dont mind me asking when&where you bought yours and for how much!
Hiya Fritz! I'd take that deal, I actually somehow prefer how the 7 feels, the only real downside is having an older electronic camera and a slightly less clear rangefinder, but plenty of folks have made marvelous things with the normal 7 haha! I got my 7ii in 2016 I think for £2000 in London brand new in box, would probably be tough to score a deal like that now though so I reckon what you've found is pretty good!
@@willysheepskin Thanks will! I think im going to do it! Ive had the RB since i was 15 (3years now) and im looking for something more portable and everyday carryable and i think the mamiya 7 is what im looking for! Another weird question, im doing an art foundation next year but after that have no idea what to go on to study. Im looking at UALs photojournalism course but wanted to get your opinion as someone who did csms fashion photography course!
🙏🏽🙏🏽🪨
By the way, any leads on the songs from @1:50 onwards?
Will... I saw on your insta you have a ton of contact sheets... you plan on giving any of them away? I'd be interested in the ones you "vandalised" the most if you plan to....
Ahoy! Those were contact sheets I made for someone else actually, but if I ever have time to make a stack of my own I'll for sure be doing something like that! Just need to make sure they actually look good haha!
Bush felt? Bush Feld? Bush Field?
Bushveld! It's a type of terrain/region, actually not sure it's exactly what that area was, but that's the word that came to mind haha!
@@willysheepskin super interesting. Never heard that term before. Thanks for explanation!
song @1:52?
It's a beat I licensed from a producer that doesn't have a name haha! They get sent to me with randomized titles, so can't provide a name to track it down unfortunately!
