I'm a Canon guy and I have never heard about Nikonos - until today. I was thinking that it's some Chinese knockoff, and my wife (smart...) said that it's just a Nikon that you carry to Mykonos. She was right X)
Just wanted to pop in here and leave a comment to say thanks for posting this video. I'm down in Jamaica and I brought my Nikonos V with me, and I needed a bit of a refresher on usage of the thing since it's been a few years since I've shot with it. It's been quite some time since greasing the o-rings (and I didn't bring the grease with me), so fingers crossed that they hold up from the last time I did it. Cheers.

That's a proper Nikonos review! I guess if you keep the film door open and the lens unmounted (when not in use of course) the rubber rings may last longer as not being pressed all the time?
Glad you think so Lyubomir! I reckon theoretically that would work and keep the seals under less pressure, but you'd also probably end up with a bunch of dust and other junk on the seals if you weren't careful and that'd be terrible for them too haha! It's such a tricky camera to care for lol!
Love the camera and have had several over the years - one more thing to check from a long time owner - sometimes the battery compartment cover will effectively seal itself closed making adding or changing the battery impossible or nearly impossible. Keep everything cleaned and lubed. Enjoy!

Ahaha thanks T.B! It can be a tricky beast to tame but once you've got some momentum with it... you still take a bunch of bad pictures but sooometimes there are a couple of nice ones in the mix haha! Glad you enjoyed the video!

@@submergedstories If you aren't using it with flash then a higher ISO film stock like Tmax P3200 or Ilford Delta 3200 would definitely be useful! Although looking at the visibility on that wreck dive you did using it with flash might be necessary haha! If you do run it with a flash then any film stock would work, I reckon Kodak Ultramax would give you a sweet underwater look though!

There will be a video on them sometime in the future for sure! They’re really cool you just need to be sure to get one in nice condition and that you can find replacement seals if you want to take it underwater! They’re really cool mechanically though!
Great video… I picked one up at the start of the year. I haven’t used it as much as I wanted thanks to covid restrictions, but that will change. I got a 20mm wide angle… trick to avoid backscatter is to get as close as possible. I reckon the 35mm is going to be more useful in tropical clear waters. Also… I use a bungee leash to clip the camera to my BCD. Then I can let it go if I have to.
Thanks Alistair! I want to try out the 15mm sometime if I can get my hands on one and change the seal haha! The only place I really used that 35mm properly underwater before this video was tropical underwater things and the difference the water makes is huge! Good call on the bungee leash, I reckon I'll do that next time I'm in the open water!
Once again a great video and nice to learn about the camera while seeing some awesome underwater willy footage ;) I've never seen a video of the lens while the aperture is being changed and its super cool how the arrows swirl around the lens. Also impressed that you managed to pick up some official Nikonos camera grease. I'm sure it has many uses..

great review! purchased one in fairly good condition this past spring and took it on a trip to the dominican republic over summer. incredibly happy with the photos i got out of mine and i'm glad it didn't leak. you mentioned you know of someone who services them in the US. firstly, would you recommend having the camera serviced even if mine seems to be working fine? also would you be willing to give out that person's contact? thanks. cheers from LA!

I totally blanked on his name while recording the video otherwise I would've mentioned it, its Narcosis! or Narcosis101 on ebay, just google "Narcosis Nikonos" Service and his website will pop up for you too get in touch. The recommendation used to be to service them once a year, I bought mine brand new in box and haven't serviced it for 5 years now but I reckon it's time is nigh if I keep taking it deep down, sigh!

So, if i did not get it wrong, there are two ways of focusing: either I use the focusing knob, as if I used a normal lens or I can reckon the distance of my subjet and use the second knob, is it correct? I guess these actions are independent...cheers!

I forgot his name in the moment while filming but it’s Narcosis101! So if you google that + Nikonos I reckon that’ll sort you and you’ll be able to get things checked out, it’s definitely worth it!
It's really a shame that it only goes to 1600 iso, as there is plenty of 3200 film out there, and light is often really sparse when scuba diving. I wonder if it can be modded to always meter for one stop less light :/
Firstly I forgot to say this on your last video but that is some mighty fine sexual material you’ve got on your head there man. Also after this video I want. Seems like a needy little thing but those images are so clean for underwater man 👏 I remember Scubaing with many absolute potatos with lenses in my day. So jealous of this experience as well man - damn scuba in the aquarium. Legendary stuff 🙌

Le ole Nikonos is indeed a needy little thing but it makes up for it with the images it can provide for sure, would be curious to try out one of the potatoes you experienced ahah! The aquarium scuba was indeed lovely, that kelp tank is actually smaller than I expected when you get inside but figured it'd be rad for the scenic vibes!

The water is 10 celcius on average when scuba diving here haha! Thick wetsuits are the way!

It's really a shame that it only goes to 1600 iso, as there is plenty of 3200 film out there, and light is often really sparse when scuba diving. I wonder if it can be modded to always meter for one stop less light :/
Firstly I forgot to say this on your last video but that is some mighty fine sexual material you’ve got on your head there man. Also after this video I want. Seems like a needy little thing but those images are so clean for underwater man 👏 I remember Scubaing with many absolute potatos with lenses in my day. So jealous of this experience as well man - damn scuba in the aquarium. Legendary stuff 🙌
Ahaha I'm glad you dig the material man! My new favorite hat for sure! Le ole Nikonos is indeed a needy little thing but it makes up for it with the images it can provide for sure, would be curious to try out one of the potatoes you experienced ahah! The aquarium scuba was indeed lovely, that kelp tank is actually smaller than I expected when you get inside but figured it'd be rad for the scenic vibes!
What depth is this rated to? Anyone taken it below the sport-diving-limit?
