Love every Ounce of this Film. It has so many Layers that many cannot see it directly or need to catch up. The Music was added to make the Relationship between Arthur Fleck and Lee Quinzel romantic. She loved the Joker and not the real Person which is Arthur Fleck. This makes a lot of Sense too (a different Approach of the Relationship with Joker and Harley) that Lee later on finds the "other" Joker and sticks to an Idea of Him. The Plottwist in the End is fantastic. This Film is another great way to reflect on Humanity. What started out as an untreated Disease (or many false Information in the History) led to a false Inspiration / led to a Misinterpretation in the Present. As mentioned, many Audience couldn't see it right away because there are so many Informations at once in this Film. The Music was wonderful sarcastic approach to over all how Humanity copes up or covers a lot through Music. I was utterly floored by the first movie. Totally crazy about it. Can’t praise it highly enough. The second movie… I find it hard to praise it. I watched it for a second time the other night and it got a little better, but still such a glaring departure from the brilliance of the first. It just… didn’t land well. I’m so gutted as I’ve talked up Todd Phillips as a writer/director and it goes without saying Joaquin Phoenix is one of the best actors in history (I held this view WAY before Joker) and Phoenix is still mesmerising. But the writing just doesn’t glow like it does in the first. The musical sequences I found jarring more than artistic, it would’ve been so much more effective to have only one or two at the most. Any criticism of the sequel falls on Phillips (and Scott Silver who co-wrote it, same as the first movie). Phoenix worked magic with the material he had, as did Gaga. Annoying how Joker was made as a standalone film yet I selfishly wanted to see more of Joaquin’s Joker, then we got a sequel and they fumbled it.
@ that was never going to happen under any circumstances right from the start. Not everything needs to have Batman and there’s no way Todd would’ve been able to make something like Batman work in a real world setting. How you would justify a guy in a cape in a world as harsh and as gritty as this, just wouldn’t have been credible.
@ I can only assume being raised at Wayne Manor(?) by Alfred etc? This also sounds ridiculous but I don’t even think audiences are permitted to assume that Bruce by definition HAS to become Batman as he grows up. I know he’s Bruce Wayne and the film is about Joker and it’s set in Gotham so all the elements are there… but there’s no guarantee that version of Bruce becomes Batman. This may be just characters based on their DC counterparts, but not 100% the characters. Do you know what I mean?
