Spend the 1k Joel I need some summer work attire 😂
In all seriousness it’s a shame about the sill but repairable and it’s an honest car 👌🏻 thanks again Joel 🙌🏻
Keep it, fix it and enjoy it. Still cheaper than a newer car, or other used car and atleast you know it’s been sorted out properly and it’ll have massive sentimental value soon
This the is the key to used cars. When you buy it, you don't know what's be done and what hasn't. But the longer you own it (and the more you do) the more it becomes a known quantity.
I love that you've found a mechanic who is comfortable on camera! Makes the car checkup episodes even more entertaining 😁😁
Also I'd like to see the S-Type brought back into shape 😁
£1k on top of £5k doesn't seem unreasonable. If it was another £5k on top then yes, that's a different coversation - but it seems a shame to get rid of it after all the money you've already spent.
I'd say it's well worth repairing as it can probably run for a long time as a fun-car and young up-comming classic for good weather, i'm sure it will be sought after in a few years by an enthusiast who'll keep it garaged and cared for. In my opinion such cars were never intended as a daily runners where cost matters.
As Matt says, "Drive the car you like, fix it when it breaks." You'll have a well sorted, rare Jag for only a grand.
Yes, but it's not just a grand is it? He's already done £3.5k on the car so far in repairs.
@@liverpoolscottish6430 that's why it's well-sorted.
I bought a S Type Jaguar that was 16yrs old from a elderly guy in July 2018, who had let it stand for over 12 months, only paid £1000 for it, he had started the engine now and then but not run it, within 6mths of me having it, the water system needed replacing radiator, water pump, hoses, then after 12mths, new battery. All seemed fine until the brakes went spongy, the garage informed me that all the break pipes needed replacing. Then whilst they were under the car they found both sills were rotten, they gave me a price for replacing break pipes and welding both sills, in total I've spent around £2000 getting it right, so my car is now 21yrs old this December it's driving like a dream, I'm so pleased I went with my gut feeling and didn't scrap it. Keep the faith Joel. Good luck 👍
Absolutely agree Brian , good man and im glad Joel is putting the effort in to keeping hos Jag going too .
@@manageme07 Thank you.
it doesnt look 25 years old does it. love your content joel.
Thanks so much for watching pal
I LOVE YOUR PRESENTATIONS. SO CAPTIVATING AND INFORMATIVE. GOD BLESS YOU REAL GOOD.
AM IN NIGERIA, ARE THERE JAGUAR SPARE PARTS ALL OVER THE WORLD ?
Top man Joel for doing what you are. Keeping a future classic car on the road. Utmost respect.
Ps. Practice on the riveting 😅
My riveting definitely needs work 😂
This model Jaguar is in demand.
This needs to be completely restored with the undercarriage.
1000 pounds is worth the expense.
Around the corner will be a happy new owner.
This beautiful looking car deserves a second chance in life.
If this has repairs as required you will recover your costs.
‘To keep the car driving for many years to come…’. You’re a braver man than I am Joel, I can’t see a set of sills guaranteeing your 25 year old Jaguar being reliable motoring for many years to come….
Same question same response from me “this is a horrible car which really does need scrapping”. Reminds me of my 1975 P registered Vauxhall Viva, my first car back in the day.
The wonderful thing about relatively new cars is the way the structure can quietly dissolve out of sight while the plastic covers make it as good as new.
You're so right! I became aware of this regarding the S and X Type Jags, but it also seems to apply to BMWs of that age. Wouldn't touch any of them with the proverbial barge pole.
Keep going, get the sills done
Hi Joel. Your doing the right thing. "Keep The Faith" You really like the car as does your Wife. Keep going. Before any little people arrive on the scene. As they will cost you more. In the long run. See you in the next one. 😁😁. 👍👍
Would have liked to have seen the holes on the O/S. but actually this looks very sortable judging by the debris. Even at 6 years old I, saw these with this kind of corrosion back in the day. Very much worth saving as its quite a tidy thing otherwise, and you have already invested in it. A better than I feared result Joel!
I think the Madder guys showed it in a little more detail on their video, if you want to check that out!
Love all these people saying fix it, wonder what their bank accounts and financial circumstances are. I have said previously it’s a lovely Jag, but it’s a money pit, and it will continue to take money off you until you have none left to give. A grand to fix the inner and outer sills, and the next grand is just waiting to be needed. Someone has already said you need to get that back bumper off to check the corrosion behind it, next job please !
So effectively you added lightness by taking off the rust making it more sporty.
Mate I found some rust on my x300 it's always a shame to find corrosion damage but these jags can take it so it should be fixable
Please keep it and keep making videos with it. It's been a really enjoyable series Joel.
Glad to hear you’re enjoying the series so far
I still think the answer to the scrap questions lies in the potential head gasket issue, as that combined with the sill work will make it very expensive in the end. It’s great you’re determined to save it though.
Sorry to hear that. That's how it is with rust, but your motor looks like it's worth saving. Good luck✌️💜👍😊
You could hear that battery struggle to start in previous episodes mate ! I think your a brave man spending more on this but good to see a classic being saved and I think you like that Jag 😂
This is coming from someone who doesn’t particularly fancy this particular example of S-Type (the beige on gold really isn’t my cup of tea):
Definitely invest the money, restore it to 100% and keep it forever! Obviously it’s of huge sentimental value to you, obviously also to to your fiancée and you’ll forever be able to say you saved the car that Richard Hammond called hideous and to scrap immediately.
Just since you’re doing a lot of bodywork anyways, do the world a favour and have it repainted British Racing Green ;-)
Totally worth it, no doubt. Too good a car to just kick out.
Get it done, and glad to hear about the driver's window!
Joel she’s such a lovely car. Repair her and keep running her. You will have great memories, then can focus on getting a Range Rover maybe L405 👌😉
That is really not bad at all. I think with a proper lift and the parts ready to go, one side inner and outer could be welded in within a day.
Great video Joel. For £1000 keep the car. It would cost £500 to hire a wedding car. Surprised the guys working on your car didn't have a lift.
Would have made life easier and given us some good footage of the underneath of the car.
Keep it get the seals done,, lovely jaguar bring it back to life,,,
Thanks for the upload Joel.
Big lesson here, the Jag looks great ontop but underneath is made of swiss cheese.
Its a shame but I think its best to drop it off at the tatters and take the loss on the chin
Great video I think you're so far into this you may as well carry on especially inlight of what you have spent & you love the car I know Matt at High Peak always always has the auto box serviced that's essential go for it & the experts you took it to well impressed with them get it done best of luck to you it's a great car imo
If it were me, I'd get them welded and enjoy the jag for a few years knowing it's mechanically sound, a V8 and it's a fairly rare car. It'll get some value back over the years as long as you don't hoon it around - I could easily see you making £5k back at some point.
No chance. The S type just hasn’t got the following to rocket in price
@@ianjenkins4641 neither does any car until enough time has passed - look at the crap cars from the late 80s, early 90s that people go mad over nowadays? He'll easily get his money back one day, people love rose-tinted glasses - but even if he doesn't, if he likes the car then it's worth keeping on the road.
Fix is the RIGHT decision. That is basically a nice car when all the aches and pains are sorted IF YOU PLAN TO KEEP IT longer term. Sporting saloon V8s are nice driving experience.
After all, £1000 is not a lot all things considered. A close relative just spent four figures repairing the DMF and stop start facility on his very ordinary Ford about one quarter the age of the Jaguar. A friend needed to spend much more than that on his so called "prestige" German car. Motoring always has costs but classy motoring like that need not cost a lot. If in the end your total spend is around £7000, that would not buy much of a used car and that could come with far more expensive things needing doing.
Economics are not something you consider when restoring a twenty five year old car. Repairing old cars needs a sympathetic approach. A thing to remember when you buy a car like this, the purchase price is just the down payment !
Old cars have character ❤
It's what you want, repair it until the next certain problem, then repair that or sell it, this is not new we have all faced this. My thinking is if you lease/buy/pcp a vehicle like that standard you are paying £4000 a year roughly, so if you get another 3 years out of it your £6000 is cheap motoring, but you always take a risk. In this case I see a car that will appreciate in value due to rarity, but will have a limited market, your big problem is that you are reliant on others to do the work. Most guys running these cars do 80% of jobs themselves, but this requires lots of expensive equipment and time, and of course knowledge. From what I have seen, no insult intended, you cannot do this, get rid of it and cut your losses.
Agreed.
It is a shame because it is a nice looking vehicle but its of such poor quality that its made it a poor buy.
Im no expert on the classic car market but I doubt if this kind of Jag will ever be sought after
I would pay to have an engine diagnostic done, and also get the engine checked over by a specialist. If the car passes this examination, please go ahead with the restoration, both for your lovely wedding, combine with entertainment for us lot! Thank you for an entertaining channel, Peter
I would (and have in the past) just thrown the money needed at it to get it sorted and right. I've never regretted my decision to do that but it's one of those. I put thousands into an old BMW because I liked the car and it gave me so much joy so to me it was worth it, but did I get that money back when I sold the car eventually? No, not even close! So if you're thinking about changing it at some point maybe it's not worth it but if you love the car and you're keeping it and doing it for you then yes it is worth doing because sure you're not getting the money back in its original value but you're creating something money can't buy easily and that's a really solid well sorted 25 year old Jag, they don't make em like this anymore. So I'd say yes go for it! But only if you wanna keep it at least a few years 👍
Have had 6x XR Jags. Stick with your s-type!!
If you plan on keeping the car for a good while the next thing you should do if it hasnt been done is timing chain guides and tensioners
Well he needs to fix the head gaskets Properly as I wouldn't Trust that Liquid he put in as I don't see how that can be a Permanent fix so its just a matter of time so yes its good content but its a money pit if he gets all the rust sorted and then that stuff let's go its all been for nothing but thats just my opinion and thoughts on it
Joel , if the car is proper in your opinion since you know it better than any of us I’d invest in the sills as you have already spent 5k on it , I like your car and with so much love you have poured in it would be a shame to cut your losses at this stage , I would definitely get it sorted then you have years of trouble free motoring touch wood nothing like this for along while then I think you have spent your money well in a car that gave you memories and pleasure able driving👍
At this stage mate, I'd spend the grand but give it a good underbody clean up and waxoyl the living daylights out of it while you're at it. You should get some reliable motoring after that, It looks a clean car and has aged well looks wise IMO.
Might make no sense now but that’s probably what people said when Jaguar Mk2s were bangers in the 70s/80s… you’ve come so far and now you know exactly what you’re in for.. you could buy something else and end up back at square one or worse.
Keep it of course😍 Its a beautiful car😍
Set it alight mate
James Briggs
Good idea, you cannot beat a bit of good old fashioned arson
NICE HONEST GUY 👍👍GET IT SORTED BUD 👍👍KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING LOVE THE JJAAGG ❤️❤️
It is definitely worth fitting new sills on. Just had both sides replaced on my Audi A4 quattro (2007). |t is the usual balance of cost versus value. At the end of the day, the repair is only what some people are paying for two months payments on a new car. You are still much cheaper repairing it.
get it fixed joel, its a future classic! 1k for sills is actually fairly decent price!
Once your in....just spent around 2 grand improving my 54 xj.....still needs rear bumper repair...onward and upward!!
Don't flush the gearbox Joel...if it's not been done after all this time, just top it up!
Could start playing up...slipping etc
If you must just change the fluid, don't flush!
Don’t flush, just drain and refill so you don’t change all the old stuff at once, draining always leaves a fair bit behind and doesn’t shock the system.
Great advice, thanks. I’ll start with a fluid change
I would deffo keep the car and get the sills repaired/replaced. Its a classic car!!!
How can you work/see any work required when it's inches off the ground... Good luck 🤞
If that is just a lead acid battery it's worth removing the caps and if any of the cells are above the acid you can top it up with deionised water and try a charge again.
The car looks good so get the inner and outer seals replaced and get it wax oil that will help to stop the rust.
This car is now Nationally, if not internationally, famous. I'm sure you'll get the money back when they time comes to sell it (or maybe you'll end up keeping it) plus it's kinder to the environment to keep it going as long as possible
Get the sills done this is a common problem on many cars Ive had worse take for example a Rover p6 where the floors are so bad you can see the ground, and under the passenger seat can see the and put your hands through and touch the inner arches. All parts are replaceable with inner and outer sills. Floor pans etc. What other choice have you ? Scrap lorry for a few hundred pounds or breaking and selling bits here and there and turning your property into a scrap yard?.
Car like this sunroofs the problem. Usually drain pipes go into sill and drain out through some holes, probably where they rust inside out.
Where could you get a luxury car at that price in such nice condition.
Also us your battery 95. Amp?? Mine is 180 amp on my 3ltr 2001. Question is is your under capacity?
it's not as bad as it can be... It's the defining factor on spending on an s-type, if it's rusty and has £££ elsewher to spend then it's not worth doing just now.. but values will continue to climb , especialy on v8's
Have to keep her on the road. ❤
Those awfull plastic side skirts... Believe me on each and every make I have had with these kind of sills there is corrosion underneath. I have had this with Mercedes, Volvo, Citroen, Opel and so on. Get it sorted, rust proof it well and enjoy. I used to own a S-Type, albeit the 3.0 Litre. Great car, one of the best cars to drive I have ever had. In that case I was able to remove those plastic sills in time, before the rust got a real hold of the Jag...
If you keep it, there's a lot of content to follow.
It's entertaining but it's not my money.
Clearly not terminal. I have sold good cars with fixable problems in the past, only to regret it when I have seen them fixed by the new owner looking like new.
I owned a beige s type, beautiful car, I would press on.
Get it fixed, lovely car👍
WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT ITS OFF ROAD CAPABILITY?
When you say 'switch out', do you mean turn off?
Do it and keep it. 👍👍👍
The logical answer is to cut your losses but then if the content is worth the expense then sure enough get it fixed. Although personally I would say use it for your wedding as it is then get rid of it.
Quite a few comments are talking about it being a future classic. I disagree I'm afraid, it'll never be that sought after and even if it did we're talking in 20 years or more and it'll have to be in an immaculate low mileage condition to be worth any money.
Initially I thought, woah, that’s bad. Then though, how many ‘V’ plate 5 series have I seen on the road lately? Or same age Merc E Class etc? There seems to be more old Jags on the road than their rivals of the day…….
Keep going.
That’s not bad at all look at most mx5’s of the same age! Rotten back arches, cils and front chassis legs!
Nah, easy fix, don't over think it. It's called bangernomics, it's what you do. Piece of cake.
Please keep the jag and make more videos with it
Joel, fix the bloody car mate. Stop asking us. We all want to see it on the road. Some wedding pictures when she is done ✔️
I HAVE ALWAYS HEARD PRESENTERS TALK ABOUT RUST ANYTIME THEY ARE PRESENTING ON JAGUAR. IS THIS CAR RUST - PRONE ?
In for a penny, in for a pound.😊 Hopefully will be all good 👍
What happens if you spend all these thousands of pounds on this car and the car is written off in an accident. A minor one could easily write off a car of that value. How much would the insurers pay out for it? £1500? £2000? That would be my worry.
I had a lovely example of an older Mercedes and someone ran a red light writing mine off. 2 months prior I had a lot of suspension and servicing work done costing £1000+… It could never be recouped even after a higher valuation was given due to its pristine condition. I wanted to keep the car going like you with the Jag, but one small accident and all the money you put in is lost.
That amount of rust on outer sill is nothing if inside is healthy. And you should definitely do collaboration with mechanics like all the other youtubers
I know a thousand pounds is a lot of money and it may not end there but people pay upwards of £500 a month on a PCP on a nondescript new car which will have more depreciation!
Get that back bumper off and you will see why your exhaust has dropped!
That back crash bar is going to be rotton to bits at the end.
Repair it and enjoy it. Not many of these on the road.
Repair it no question
Structural repairs for 1000+ isnt that bad, many pay the same for a timing belt change or take the same hit in quarterly depreciation in new boring car
That hammer tapping gave me anxiety
Why doesn’t he put it up on a ramp to check out the rust?
Save the Jaaaaaaaag!!
Joel, love the videos and content...I know it's a cliche, but this appears to be another case of buy the best car you can afford rather than a tatty one and try to put it right...with the money you have spent there are a few nice looking S-Type Rs about...would in interesting to see if they are any better than yours...you are too far in now, so spend the money and enjoy the car...
Why do you need the air quotes??
If the videos cover the cost of it, go ahead and do it. The tricky thing for you as a RUclipsr is the car has to be profitable as a content source. Keep that in mind. Easy for me to save it but it's not my livelihood linked to it.
Should of kept your old Range Rover and had the rust repaired on that 😂
In hindsight, I agree!
@@itsjoel lovely car the jag, worth saving at the end of the day!
It’s a jaaag!!
5k in and considering you'll sell it for £300 scrap, it's a no brainer, surely?
Spend the money mate!
Get the sills done! Look at it this way, if you were leasing a Jag, you would be spending £800 a month on a car you dont own. put that money towards your own car and enjoy it.
Well if you have spent five grand another grand won't really break the bank SAVE IT Joel
Far better would be to have bought a superb, mint-condition S-typeJaguar 4.2L version in the first place, for far, far less than you've already spent on repairs to the 4L bottomless pit rust-bucket that you chose to waste cash on....🙄😂
Should never have got rid of the 7 Series BMW
Do miss that car!
Just some constructive criticism if I may. Some longer episodes would be nicer on this series, taking an entire episode to show some rust in the sills is sort of milking it a bit too much and I find it a bit off putting. The content you make is good though. Re the car ultimately you should keep going at this point, but it’s really not a big deal to be £5/£k into a sorted V8 Jaguar I don’t think?
