Worth trying with the dealer but not expecting too much luck tbh. Only failure that I saw from the video was the tyre. Difficult one. Definitely get in touch with the seller Joel. On the other hand after the work is complete you have a well sorted beast of a car!!!! Good luck
Up to you what you do, but as other people have said, take the car back to the dealer. Thing is, any vehicle sold from a dealer needs to meet trading standards and be fit for purpose. In practice, this means that you have around 3 months to take a car back if it's got any big problems, like this cam variator, and the dealer really doesn't have a leg to stand on. You may even be able to return the car up to 6 months later. Also, sounds like the MOT could possibly be a bit dodgy, but certainly was quite lapse!
I would say to get it sorted. Even if you buy another with half the miles, it can still have issues with the phasers. And overall, the car is in good shape. I think it's worth the expenditure
Get your money back if you can, those cars are lovely but really older ones can be ruinous unless your able to fix yourself. I bought one for £500 a 4.7 v8 as the owner had enough and was going scrap it. The car did run fine but was riddles with loads of other faults that just cost to much to fix, sold quite a few parts off it made around £3500 on it and scrapped what was left.
What a great car :) stunning interior, wheels polished to perfection, not just sprayed.... Over 100k miles and £6k pp...I think u have got off lightly! - Personally, if engine wear item cant b fixed under £2k, I would run it with best oil u can buy for a yr or two and enjoy stunning sound and the sublime interior - Cheap bit of paintwork, tyres, clamps etc and enjoy :) How's your dads 125 3.0 going? - Fancy one of those - fancy yours too, but a bigger gamble
Looks quite nice...I was lucky enough to have to drive for a day a 1969 Quattroporte (I was 19 yrs old) The day before I had been driving a Plymouth Satellite....thought that sounded and looked good. But a 69....Brilliant....to drive and to look at.
Enjoyed the video. My view would be either send it back (if you can!) or enjoy it and run it to the ground i.e. just spend the bare minimum on it to keep it going until it dies. The worst mistake would be spending a fortune on it, after which you still have a high mileage, Cat S, Zero history car worth no more than you paid for it.
I very much want one of those😍😍 Hopefully next year I'll have the funds for the car, plus a very very healthy contingency fund for anything that goes wrong or needs maintaining to keep it healthy. Wanted one for years and my RUclips playsuit is just full of Quattroporte videos. Even the ones with tales of woe aren't putting me off😂😂
Naive is how you would characterise this video. Paying less than £10000 for a £100,000 pound Maserati and not carrying out a full fat specialist inspection before parting with your cash is just silly. A common sense rule of thumb, the older/ higher mileage/higher original value car you purchase, proportionally, the greater the due diligence you must perform. In this case, you did the exact opposite. The dealer must have seen you coming before you left home.
Take the car to a reputable MOT station and see what they come back with. Is the tyre egged as a result of the cut? Has the cut gone through to the cords, because if not, then it isn't an MOT failure, only an advisory
Eventually you’ll get a misfire code and you’ll have low power. The car won’t blow up but you’ve got to fix it. Honestly it’s so much better than the V10 M5 with the explosive rod bearings. I just had my QP GT S repaired for $4,400.
@M539Restorations had the "bad idea" to recover one Maserati...rebuild the engine to the millimeter and didn't last long...but, good luck :) I really love these different cars that nobody has but it's a money pit
Number plates from Halfords, that in itself on a supercar is massive alarm bells. It's come from Solihull, Postcode B90, I live in the area. So, it really depends on from where in that area it came from. It's either and ex-footballer or, erm, somebody who doesn't care about cars, only their image....
Sorry, but on narrow roads driving that aggressively seems a little silly. Take it a bit easier, especially as you're not sure if the car has any unseen issues. Just saying.
Good! Just do that and the sticky plastics, and you’ll have a sweet Mazzer for many miles! Have a look around for prices for the variator job, could get much cheaper I do think.
Well, aren't we in the same boat 😅😅😅 both got awesome looking and driving modern classics for just under 10k, only to find out they had expensive cam issues! I got a lot fixed and thought now it's worth the repair, 'cheaply' outside the E.U. on my vacation road trip.. the cam was the last of my issues, the engine lost 2liters of oil in the middle of Serbia, where nothing is covered by insurance and phoning someone costs 7€/min! Refilled the oil, and there came all the repairs I previously payed 2k for undone, back to oil leaks, dpf blockages... I am not rich enough to own this car, the question is.. are you?
lol. You bought a £6k Maserati, what the hell did you expect? It’s a super car, they don’t get cheaper to run/repair/maintain when they get older. The MOT test in this country is of a woefully low standard regardless and guess what, the tester is human and can miss items. To indicate that the MOT is dodgy when you know nothing of the sort is completely out of order. Get a grip.
.Thats very true, Would not say that was a dodgy MOT maybe should had advised on the faults ? As for a MOT only valid at time of inspection ??? , Worth F/A the next day lol
I thought the noise might have been hydraulic tappets as I’ve had VW and Audi cars that made that noise. Engines can be noisy on start up anyway. If you like the car I would get the problems fixed.
These are great cars to look at and to drive. Six was a little too much. Speak to the dealer re engine problem and ask for 2 grand back. Could make an interesting vlog !
I would do the latter get it fixed go on and enjoy an adventure with the car, whatever you do don't scrap it! Cars like that need people who are willing to give life back and be driven how it's meant to be driven.
I work in a mot garage and had to work on a Maserati coupe suspension. Every nut and bolt was such shit quality and was seized and had to be cut and replaced. Strangely they were mostly in stock meaning it was a regular problem. The ones that weren’t available were replaced by BMW equivalents in the end the whole front suspension had to be replaced and it took 3 days to do a job that takes 1/2 a day on most cars.
Had same problem with the same car but here in Italy things are much cheaper. Spent just over one thosand euro for parts and labour, the difference between here and the UK is here same car with 150k miles will cost around 25k euro 😞
I dont remember hearing about why it was a cat S. Where is the damage? What repairs has it had? It seems pretty stupid to comment on a worrying rattle and then jump in and rag it for an hour to an engineer. Thank your lucky stars it didnt blow up on the way. You need to be a keen engineer to want a car like this, and be able to maintain it. The cat S virtually halves the car value regardless of its condition.
The clean MOT sheet shouldn't come as a surprise. I've been telling people for years, that a clean MOT history is not indicative of good maintenance. There's so much MOT fraud going on throughout the industry it's unreal, and most dealers are in bed with their garages to do it. Hence why sellers can pump umpteen MOT's out on a whim, when selling a car. Equally, when a person takes their car for an MOT - when the garages correctly list all faults, they are accused of drumming up business, or extortion. I'd hazard a guess, there's thousands of cars out there with valid MOT's that are dangerous.
Once did a cam variator on an alfa. Spoke to the dealers about how to get it off the cam and they said they don't they throw the cam and variator away and replace both.
I have had a 2005 Quattroporte Executive 4.2 litre Cambio Corsa (Duo Select automated manual) (with Formula Dynamics chips for throttle control and increase from 400HP to 425HP) for 10 years; and a 2012 GranCabrio Sport 4.7 litre with ZF auto box for five years. The Cabrio looks stunning (of course) and attracts comments shouted across the street of "Rich bastards" - nice for my 10 and 14 year old sons in the back. The Quattroporte is almost unnoticeable. Yet it drives faster and handles way better and more easily than the Cabrio. Plus the Quattroporte has far better seats, upholsterery (Poltrona Frau leather), wood and leather and alcantara interior. Sure, the analogue TV doesn't work anymore (all digital now) and the in-console telephone is quite redundant now. While top speed is supposed to be 275kmh (isn't that a supercar?), the speed limiter in the infotainment system (bit of a silly place to put it) reigned the car in at 250kmh. No one, even the dealer, doesn't know how to cancel this - seems no one actually uses the car for what it was built for - high speed luxury travel for a family of five.
I’d cut my losses and sell it asap. The niggles will ruin your enjoyment of the car. As an owner of many Italian cars past and present, one thing you never do is buy them sight unseen. Especially Ferrari’s and Maserati’s. Look forward to the next episode!

'This is going to be a fraught drive!'
6K RPM.
What is wrong with people?
@@jamesdanton9033 And without even checking the tyres. LOL
@@wilsjane I don't like beating on people but this is female levels of throwing caution to the wind.
'I just got scammed on this car, the engine isn't great. Well, I better go for a long distance, high RPM drive without checking anything else. I mean, I'm sure everything else is kosher, just look at that seat leather'.
For Pete's sake.
Good luck with this one Joel👍
Difficult one. Definitely get in touch with the seller Joel. On the other hand after the work is complete you have a well sorted beast of a car!!!! Good luck
You should have watched m359 restorations before buying.
If you hear noise - there is wear - Wear destroys engines - nuff said.
Hes a knowledgable guy..straight.😊
Get your money back if you can, those cars are lovely but really older ones can be ruinous unless your able to fix yourself. I bought one for £500 a 4.7 v8 as the owner had enough and was going scrap it. The car did run fine but was riddles with loads of other faults that just cost to much to fix, sold quite a few parts off it made around £3500 on it and scrapped what was left.
Sreten from M539 restorations is currently putting in engine no 2 on his one. Ask him what he thinks of the Maserati Quattraporte...
I love streten went to see him last year on my way to Berlin in my E38 .He called me project Manchester .
Ask the dealer for some cash back and just batter it until it fails 😂
What a great car :) stunning interior, wheels polished to perfection, not just sprayed....
Over 100k miles and £6k pp...I think u have got off lightly! - Personally, if engine wear item cant b fixed under £2k, I would run it with best oil u can buy for a yr or two and enjoy stunning sound and the sublime interior - Cheap bit of paintwork, tyres, clamps etc and enjoy :)
How's your dads 125 3.0 going? - Fancy one of those - fancy yours too, but a bigger gamble
Loving this car man! Dont know loads about them, but I love their vibe 👌🏼
Keep it and go on your big European adventure. Don't worry about every noise on an old car.
These sound really nice - you would have to be mad to buy an old one and even madder to buy one without history / inspection. Great content though :)
Definitely see if you can get the dealer to pay half then you have a great car still for very cheap and everything is next to perfect on it
Looks quite nice...I was lucky enough to have to drive for a day a 1969 Quattroporte (I was 19 yrs old) The day before I had been driving a Plymouth Satellite....thought that sounded and looked good. But a 69....Brilliant....to drive and to look at.
Send it back at the end of the day you bought it with sconfidence or get the dealer to sort the issues out
The good news is that you can always sit in comfort as you drink your morning coffee.
Even the ones with tales of woe aren't putting me off😂😂
STOP STOP STOP ...
@@295walk why why why?
Naive is how you would characterise this video. Paying less than £10000 for a £100,000 pound Maserati and not carrying out a full fat specialist inspection before parting with your cash is just silly. A common sense rule of thumb, the older/ higher mileage/higher original value car you purchase, proportionally, the greater the due diligence you must perform. In this case, you did the exact opposite. The dealer must have seen you coming before you left home.
Im so jealous this is the perfect roadtrip car even with the issues id kill for one of these
My 2018 Ford F150 ecoboost did this noise too. Had to repair the engine due to damaged CAM phasers.
Got rid of it a few months ago.
Take the car to a reputable MOT station and see what they come back with.
Is the tyre egged as a result of the cut? Has the cut gone through to the cords, because if not, then it isn't an MOT failure, only an advisory
Im glad my Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio doesnt give me any major issues, sure its had its moments but nothing to leave me stranded on the road.
Eventually you’ll get a misfire code and you’ll have low power. The car won’t blow up but you’ve got to fix it. Honestly it’s so much better than the V10 M5 with the explosive rod bearings. I just had my QP GT S repaired for $4,400.
All you see on Facebook and you tube now is send the car back to the dealer, I will hato stop reading the comments.
I heard first hand from a maserati dealer manager that they use chrysler parts
17 year old car.
Caveat Emptor.
Cars depreciated by over 90% do so for a reason.
Get your money back and make sure the dealer and MOT center are to task.
I am not rich enough to own this car, the question is.. are you?
It might be worth changing the oil. Someone might have put thicker oil in to try to stop the rattling.
What made this a Category S car? I can't tell despite seeing all around it
Hey, sorry if not seen but what was the sticker price?
£6k
Why why would u pay 6k for a car without warranty a clean mot and no service history 🤔
@@simonstewart3863 Insanity or RUclips monetization...
Could make an interesting vlog !
...i feel your pain dude,I experienced something similar with my 5.0v10 phaeton
I would do the latter get it fixed go on and enjoy an adventure with the car, whatever you do don't scrap it! Cars like that need people who are willing to give life back and be driven how it's meant to be driven.
For sticky, use neutrogena makeup remover wipes.
Clean up the underside and enjoy the car...
As for the tyre that could have happend a mile down the road from the MOT centre unfortunately.
Rattlerati……. Nice move Joel, more exciting than anything that you have bought in the past.
Put some STP engine flush then a Castro synthetic oil.
Love ‘Mazza’s! 👍👍🦘🦘🦘🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
You should have followed M539 he’s covered an engine rebuild 🤔
I'd find out who did the previous MOT Test.
Welcome to Maserati ownership! 🤝
What the hell is wrong with the number plates then? Standard, legal, approved plates. Every law abiding vehicle owner has them.
Try for a full refund plus expenses from the dealer, report the mot station examiner.
If refused threaten to report the mot station and examiner
I’d cut my losses and sell it asap. The niggles will ruin your enjoyment of the car. As an owner of many Italian cars past and present, one thing you never do is buy them sight unseen. Especially Ferrari’s and Maserati’s. Look forward to the next episode!
M539 restorations in Germany has an engine with new variatiors and chains.
You do know that according to the car warranty companies, these dogs have even worse reliability than a JLR product. Which is already a bar so low that a flounder would struggle to swim under it...
