What do you do when you have some really ugly looking old fiberglass garage doors that are completely worn out? Use Plasti-Dip to make them look just a little bit less nasty!
This video will show you every step of the process from start to finish.

I have these yellowing garage doors from the 60s with the same "fuzzy" threads coming undone from the fiberglass surface. I was going to replace them but decided to give painting them a shot. I painted mine white with a good exterior oil paint (flat), using a good roller and pressing it hard against the surface. This worked like a charm! Those fuzzy threads are now all flat to the surface and completely unnoticeable, holding up for over a year and through a bad winter. I don't think you can achieve this result with spraying. It was pressing firmly with the roller that made all the difference. I did use a foam brush for the indented parts where a roller would not reach, which was fine cause the indented sections were smooth with no threads showing through. I sprayed with oil primer first, then gave two coats of oil paint with the roller. The paint was for fiberglass and metal made by Rustoleum. Worked like magic!

That's a great suggestion and solution for those who have these old garage doors. I plan on replacing them sooner rather than later and was only trying to have some fun with Plasti-Dip. However, what you did sounds like a great plan for anyone trying to extend the life of their old doors!

Do you think semi gloss or gloss would be ok or would it be too shiny?

I recently bought an old fixer upper house with this garage door and had no idea how to make it look better. I’ll definitely try the oil based primer and paint with a roller. I can’t buy a new one for a little bit so thank you for sharing what worked for you!

Funny how every one demonized these doors but if you love basket ball in your driveway I've thrown hundreds of missed shots. No dents no broken glass .

Will painted doors allow the light to come through as before?

Until you took the camera up close, the doors looked brand new! You did a fabulous job making use of PlastiDip to not have to purchase new doors.

Great video - thanks so much for taking the time to do this. It's just what I was looking for as I am about to paint my old fiberglass garage doors that look just like yours! Nice work!

A light sandpaper might be good to take the "fuzz" off, where it won't damage your new finish. Worth a try!

That's a good suggestion, unfortunately as you start to try and sand off the loose bits it starts to pull itself apart. If this was done a few years earlier it would likely work pretty well.

Those doors could probably have been saved by using a 2K polyurethane paint! They at least would have been shiny, and maybe even shiny enough to not accumulate debris and dirt afterwards. But would have likely required a LOT of sanding so....

I agree. There are likely a number of way better options to try and restore or save these fiberglass doors. Plasti-Dipping the doors was more of a fun exercise and test to see what the results would be. Obviously the best option would be to remove these horrible type doors and replace with something more modern and efficient. :)

MY THOUGHT WITH MINE IS REPLACING THE FIBER GLASS WITH STEEL ROOFING ???
