Yes I loved this trick that you did. My father is a general contractor however, painting is his first love I’m going to show this to him. Thank you for sharing.
Great vids. Thank you. Good to see the young guys carrying on the tradition. I used to do high end homes about 20 years ago. You boys are doing great work. Keep it up just make sure you charge enough for all the quality you are providing. I look forward to more of your videos.
hey, thank you so much Dave, We really appreciate you saying that! thanks so much! made my day. Yes we are trying to provide the best quality service out there, and trying to work with people and clients that truly appreciate great quality. thanks again
Thank you so much 👍We really appreciate it 🙏 You can do it! It is very worth it, and dresses up your exterior immediately! thanks for the comment and let me know if you have any questions
Nice job this is a project that I’m gonna do before the summers over because I’m getting my siding changed to a slate color, my garage doors are almond color. Thanks for all the tips now I just have to run to Sherwin-Williams and pick up paint and a sprayer.
😂😂😂 freaking roland and gaylin, they come in a pair. Cant get one without the other. I painted with these guys for a while about 7 years ago. I was there foreman, really cool guys to work with.
awesome quick to the point video! QUESTION, my garage repair guy says I need to tape between the panels.Have you ever heard or practiced this? or is this possibility of paint sticking between panels removed when the door is drying in the opened position ?
New garage doors, do you spray the panels before you put the garage door together? The one I bought didn't come in black, so I bought white and will need to spray it black.
Only one coat will be sufficient to protect from all the elements? No need to wash before or after the sanding? (Not questioning just curious) thanks in advance! Great video (new subscriber)
Hello Dimitri, thanks for the questions, no problem at all, great questions. So it always depends on different circumstances, but in this case we did pressure wash the doors prior to shooting the video, always a good idea. You can also sand by hand and then blow off with a blower to clear dust. I always like to do a sticky light coat followed by a heavier coat for final, but in some cases clients just want 1 coat, so as long as the door is not west or south facing (direct sun) and we are shooting a similar color that has been painted already, I think 1 heavy coat is ok when recoating doors. 2 is always the best, but if you are doing a color on color recoat using a good paint should these doors should hold up until the client want to change color💪 thanks for the comment
I dont understand how he paints under the flanges on the sides??? Ive always done the stepping on the back trick but im not catching the trick for the sides?
Do you need to scuff sand if they’re just the factory color? We have white and want to paint darker. Would also love to see the whole prep process of you guys taking this up!
To those watching now. My plan would be to force door down and apply a clamp or vice grips right above door roller to hold it hard down on each side then go out and spray top jamb. After that you can release clamps and let the door relax and finish up. Luckily I am replacing the jamb trim/weatherstrip on the sides and top so will remove the old, spray door and trim separate. And install the trim/weatherstrip and spot touchup the nails when installing the new trim.
Hello Tammy, thanks for the question. No we do not add any water to our paint. I highly recommend not adding water to exterior paint as it can change the sheen or change warranty. With an airless sprayer you don't need to water down any paint to spray it. If you are using a cup gun or hvlp then that is when you would thin your paint a bit. Thanks for the comment 👍🙏
Great question! Adhesion is very important, so make sure you sand surfaces to open up the pores on the substrate, and or use xylene or tsp to etch the metal...also this opens up the pores and ensure great adhesion. Thanks for the comment
Nice work! I have white doors I want to paint black. All the videos I've watched, no one seems to paint the doors behind the top and side weather stripping. It's also currently white, and I thought I'd replace with black. Is there a reason you don't paint these parts?
Yes we do, as u could see in the video we push the door down and when the door is rolled about waist high it will expose that white inch or 2. Another way we do it is if the weather strip is really tight against the door, simply roll up the door and grab a ladder and paint the sides and tops from above the door while it is up and laying flat. Thanks for the comment and let me know if you have any questions 😊
@@PaintBoss Yes and that makes sense now. It is tight, and it's more of the sides that wouldn't get it rather than the top. Painting those areas while the door is up is a good idea, thank you!
It would have been nice to see a wrap up shot of the property as well as an establishing shot. This way we could have seen the overall effect. I bet the fence and newly painted doors look very elegant together now.
Hello Bryan, thanks for your comment 👍🙏 so we run the paper under the door and behind just to protect against any overspray getting past the sides of the doors or if the flange on the bottom of the door isn't tight. It is just a safety precaution. Thanks again for the comment, we appreciate it 🙏
You can just use cardboard if it is what you have. Don't over think it. Use what you have to keep overspray off where you don't want it. Even a painters plastic drop cloth and tape will work.
One thing I've noticed a lot of these DIY painters is they forget the most vital part of painting garage doors is also painting in between the garage door seams. Do right and not half-ass 🤨
Why my garage door wont open the day after a paint job??? It sort of open on one side, but making a loud click noise struggling to go up. The HOA hired a company to paint all townhomes.
Hi what size of tip would u recommend for spraying sherwin Williams emerald exterior that will still give you that tight control ? It seems like really thick paint.
Hello there, and thanks for the comment. I personally like a 4/12 fine finish. it is still big enough to get the exterior paints through it and gives you great control. Are u talking about garage doors or siding? thanks
@@PaintBoss we are going to spray our garage with an old graco magnum but might do some siding also. We noticed in the video you stated a 310 which my husband felt would give him better control but the orifice size seemed inappropriate for our thick emerald paint. Thanks!
So all in all, we sanded all the doors, masked them, and then shot....we were probably 2 hours in,...but with 3 people. We actually shot 2 personnel doors, and 4 garage doors in probably 2.5 hours start to finish. Thank you for your comment 🙏
Yes most of the time we do, doing this little trick it actually gets some paint in that seam between the flange, but if there are any shrink marks or its to tight, we will lift up the door and hit the edges if needed. Thanks for the comment 🙏
Thank you. No this paint is super paint from sherwin Williams so it does not need to be sealed. This color is black fox, it is a great color for exteriors. thanks for the comment 👍 🙏
Hello, so out here we would charge between $175- $250 for each garage door. Obviously, it ranges in size and most importantly in condition👍👊 Thank you for your comment 👍
I know, you are right. On these doors in particular, the previous painter left a "stretch mark" or unpainted edge around the doors, so when we do it this way we can get a little paint on the edge behind the rubber flange...just a little trick to help with expansion and contraction lines out here with crazy temp swings.
Pro Painter says there is no way to get the edges painted... because all they want to do is spray. Sure there is....Get on a step ladder with the door up and use a 4" roller or sash brush to do the edges when the door is up. It's a little tricky but makes a much better finished job. I do it first, let it dry, then the next day lower the door and paint the whole door. Similar to cutting in a ceiling when painting a room.
It might rub eventually, but most of the stretch marks we talk about, is where the original painter didn't open the door while spraying and left some edges without paint...it is definitely hard to hide these, but we try our best to prevent 👊💪
Nice video guys. Question on the sheen...in the video you said you were using satin, but the Sherwin Williams site says to use gloss for garage doors. Which do you usually go with for garage doors and why? My garage door gets a lot of sun exposure so was wondering what you'd recommend in that case. Thanks!
i'd be pretty pissed if i had this job done on my doors. did not get 100% coverage. one run looking through the footage i saw a big section missed on the first door and third door. just look at your painter's tape on the 3rd door - see how you can see a clear defined edge of blue, untouched painter's tape on the window? that means the area immediately below it was UNPAINTED. IMO painter was systematic but inconsistent which lead to this miss.
No bad, but a little fast and lazy on some of the spraying. Also done right it should have had the seals around the door removed and replaced to get full coverage as well as started with the joints, then then finished with the door.
I took all the rubber off my doors its pretty cheap for a new kit. And it only nails back on. I brushed it all on. Sanded filled sanded Painted sanded painted sanded painted Gave it a mognangy look on real wood door. 1 year later the bottom chiped peeled and looked bad, I hit those spots with spray paint. Ill have to rebuild the look and blend it back in.
Sweet! that sounds amazing, great job 👏 👍 Yes the faux wood grain, is a great look on garage doors, I've always had problems on the sealing of it afterwards, and out here our climate is so extreme, the topcoat would start to flake after a couple years, so I don't do it anymore out here, just from a warranty issue. I really like that you put on all new rubber, that is a nice touch and really cleans up the project nicely 👌 thanks for the comment
You're supposed to tape the flaps back to get paint on the whole door. This video is not educational I would hope for most people. Also I get good results with a brush, certainly as good or better than an airless.
