I can't believe you didn't use a good primer on that bare wood around the door, paint and primer paint will never beat a good coat of quality primer.
Don’t paint the rubber seal. The paint and rubber react and create an adhesive like sticky residue. The seal then sticks to the door and usually causes an issue after the garage has been closed all night. The door sticks and doesn’t want to open without several tries.
I repair and install garage doors here in Florida. Get calls for this almost daily.
I appreciate that tip! Working on mine now
I just replaced weatherstripping on a property flip for some of my clients. They had that exact issue.
Whoever got to the site first in the morning always had issues open the garage door but then it would function fine all day long.
Semper Fi.
Yes your right and paint won't stay on that flexing rubber it always comes off after a short time.
I have done many garage doors like this. The only thing I do different is when spraying the trim, I use the gun to apply the paint (approx. 4 foot section) then with the other hand I back brush to get the paint in the deep weathered grooves. Then I spray the garage. I wait about 15 -20 min then spray a final light coat on the trim. It turns out very nice and even here in Phoenix, AZ (gates of hell) the trim looks excellent after 5 years. * I use Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint for regular mixed sun exposure and Duration for South facing exposure.
When i was watching i was suprised he didnt back brush the wood,i wouldnt of paper n taped the siding i would of brushed trim and sprayed just the metel door.but i have learned painters do things dif but as long as its done and happy customer is whats important..
You’re using regular Super Paint for garage doors? Rep at Sherwin Williams said the Emerald Urethane all the time. I’ll have to ask someone else.
@@Reneivan I'm sure the emerald urethane would probably be the best but using what I've been using seems to be working just fine with no fading or problems. Then again, most garage doors aren't dark colors they're usually base one.
If I ever have to do one that's much darker like a dark brown or a green I'll give that a shot and see if there's a difference.
@@918scott4 thank you for the reply!
Quick tip: If you're painting when the factory finish is all that has been applied previously, your best bet is ESP (Easy Surface Prep) by Flood. It's a wipe-on application before painting.
"this is the part where most homeowners sat screw it." 😂
Prep takes longer than actually painting is what I always say.
Always!
Prep will reflect the finished. Slack on prep. Suffer the finish.
Your paint job is only as good as your prep job. Same for prepping and painting cars, trucks, and RV’s
looks like there was a bit of overspray in some locations on the left side
Tremendous job! You truly are the greatest handyman in the universe!
A good power wash might have helped your scraping time!!
I used rollers on mine and it didn't take very long at all. I also used Sherwin Williams Rain Refresh paint. Not sure what tech they got going with it but after a few years of it facing east it still looks fantastic.
Expert tip: Masking a sheet at a time is time consuming. Pull the roll slowly and keep your tape edge along your seam. One full sheet.
It would drive me nuts when i would show the employees how to mask and then thy would do it in 20sections
Seriously
I agree. I think he did it this way because it looked like he was fighting the wind?
If it's windy, it can be a real pain by yourself to keep it one long section and tape the other edge as you go to keep the wind from ripping it.
Would have went with a powerwasher, roller and brush. Kinda forgot part of thia job is selling a sprayer:)
I’m planning on painting my 2 car garage door. Fortuitous video. Will keep planning and procrastinating painting my garage door
Good show Handy. I’ve sprayed a few garage doors and I’m glad that my process matches yours. Even though I’m no pro. HandyOn
This is what i use my graco ultra quickshot for. Compact and easy cleanup. It's the small job king.
The prep makes the job, cutting and replacing the caulking, scraping and clearing all the loose paint is what separates us from the DIYers and that person that says i know a guy the is cheap.
Wowser's ... nearing 500k subs, well done sir!
How to do a shty job! All the weather strip was broken. That would have been 1/2 hour to replace, the prep and setting up and cleaning the sprayer, put at least 2 coats on. Use the appropriate paint and primer. It seems all these paints today are combo primer and paint but I wouldn’t trust it for exterior painting. Are they selling the house? As usual just enough to make a landlord or real estate agent happy!
Massive. Truly... massive.
Thx 4 sharing
congrats on 500K bloody legend full send bro! never lift! mobbin deep!
Good information about painting 🖌️🖌️🖌️🖌️
Pump armor, if you don't have any, use antifreeze. It works the same and protects just as good.
That pesky cable wire! 😂
Congrats on 500K!!! Well deserved…
Thank you
Prep it right makes the painting part a breeze!
Thanks for the video =)
Shorten the pickup tube for one gallon and get a shorter high-pressure hose. If you need all the paint in the hose, you can just put water in the bucket and spray until you detect water from the gun.
Is this a “Someone wants to send me a free paint sprayer and I might as well paint my garage door” video? I need to do this too so very timely.
You saw right thru the greatest handyman in the world
Handyman is like, “I’m way too rich to scrape all this crap.” Cuts video and calls in neighbor kids. Jk ha ha
@@user27278 I am, the greatest comment channel in the entire world.
easier to just use a hot dog roller than all that taping for 2 mins of spraying, then 10 cleaning
We just had our house exterior painted, most of the time the guys were sanding, presumably to help with paint adhesion. I've also heard that the paint here in California doesn't last as long due to government regulations on ingredients.
I've never seen a garage door finished without trim boards, (brick mold or flat board).
I think Handyman is painting his own garage 😅😊
If it was someone else’s he’d wrap it>>>
They didn't use brick molding on the original install
A paint eater tool makes that scraping a lot easier.
you need to prime before caulking
Uh oh... looks like the mountain bike is getting a new fork and cassette.
You try that sprayer with a solar generator? I painted my horse fence with a gen, graco sprayer in my tractor bucket was a racket of noise but got the job done
Time to start shooting the bow I see! Archery opens Sept 9 here in Georgia, stoked.
The 1st for me.
I'm a union painter and I make great money
I use 15 foot hose when I spray doors but I also use a real airless too, not a throw away😂
🇺🇸🤘 Heck Yeah Handy Dandy 🤘🇺🇸
I know a guy from Ohio 💪 Nice job Handyman!
8:20. Sweet tip
Would not use behr, not even if customer paid extra to use it, its literally one of the worst paints sold. Good tip on cutting the paid edge before opening the door.
In what way is behr paint one of the worst sold?
@jimkane9832 takes forever to dry and cure, not a durable paint in general across the product brand. It's only marginally cheaper than a professional brand anyways.
You’re not using it correctly, if that’s the case. Behr especially interior is great! I used it for many years with not one single callback for peeling or anything of the sort. Your prep work might be sub par. Make sure you’re sending previously painted/stained areas and use a good primer.
@TheUuhhh not improper use, just a junk product line, stains and paints. Don't know a single professional that does high end work with behr.
I have had good results with higher level Behr paint. Both interior and exterior.
😂. Now that’s a job I’d pay someone to do for me.
Where do you live lol, I'll be there tomorrow
Lol you said don’t want to waste paint. Roll it would’ve had 3/4 of that gallon leftover. And where’s the brick molding on that door?
Must be premier in paint.." you still need your beard back love you Rick
BY the time you prepped to spray, I would have used a brush and roller and been home before you even started spraying.
No you wouldn’t
Dude that can be masked off in two minutes and double sprayed in another two.. I would be cleaning out my sprayer before you even got done with a single panel.
And that’s why you aren’t a painter it would look like shit.
Nope
Even if you were right, which you’re not, it would look disgusting
Should have pressure washed the door first saves a lot of time prepping. Turbo nozzle that loose paint off!
I would rather scrape myself lol
Afew things i would of done dif as a prof painter but overall the job got done and looks good👍👍
Where do you put the pump armor?
Great info! Did I miss the link for your new knife?
Here it is. You can customize them too. alnk.to/goYX5z2 alnk.to/9mmDQVf
Too small of a job for a sprayer when you consider the prep work and clean up
Brush the trim, shield and spray the door. Screw all that masking nonsense
Wire cup on angle grinder?
only painters that know what they are doing make money =] graco quickshot would be my pick to spray that garage door.
Wish this had been around before I bought my Graco X5 last year - paid 3x. Looks like it may use similar-style tips?
All a sprayer tip needs is the right tip guard to screw onto the spray gun. Go to a paint store and they will tell you what you need
I use brush still...and I charge....got a deck to seal this afternoon with brush...
Man I agree -- you need a lot of stuff to paint with those things to make the whole process worth it and they are a pain in the ASSSSSS to prep and clean up (the machines themselves) ...
The end result is almost no better/faster than just rolling it on. I guess if you have a lot of nooks and crannies to paint these can be good too. Like the ceiling of a shed or something...
How much did you get for painting the garage door?
The graco handheld sprayers from Home Depot work perfectly for this small of a job. It runs on electricity or Dewalt batteries. Hell even the $150 Wagner would be great!
I have the Wagner Flexio...some of the worst money I ever spent. You would be lucky to get a nice clean finish with the one I have. I should have bought the Graco Magnum.
I don't think so, this one can cover a lot of scenarios, there's no need to buy another one
He doesn't give a shit about quality back brushing
Quick buck man.
Get yourself a Linbide carbide scraper, it looks small and crude but puts all other paint scrapers to shame. It would have shaved all that old paint of the wood with ease.
How much do you charge for this job?
Is that a rolli
What mountain bike ya got there?
Its an older Giant Reign
Just cap that trim with aluminum and be done with it for the next 50 years.
Save yourself the bother, brush and roller.
Contractor I work with refuses to use airless for exterior or interior jobs. It's a good tool if used in the right applications to money
can you put a blanket under garage door.
Massive 2 car 😂
Vinyl is final
Ew
I had a homeowner get mad and fire me because “ all I did the first day was unload supplies and make a big dusty mess”. I was painting a vacant 3 br house……🤷🏼♂️
By yourself looks like you should get 5 more guys to help you !😣
Can tell you're not a Painter by the fiberglass ladder
Is this another one of those $1000/day projects?
Накосячил немного справа.
5 gallon of water
5 gallons will paint that whole house. You only need about a pint to paint the entire door. (Making comment at @1:40 )
Yeah a thin coat that will start peeling after a year
This house will take at least 15 gallons of paint to cover the outside.
Whos this guy. No beard?
Wow. That was a terrible job IMO. If you’re making that kind of money that just boosted my confidence. I don’t think I could have left that wood looking like that and slept at night. 😂 That wood needed so much help. I usually like watching your work, but this one for me was what not to do.
There is a reason I make more money then you.
@@TheHandyman1 yes thanks for showing me anything is possible now.
Pity you dont have a sand blaster 😢
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Bro are you ok .... You didn't put your paint overalls on. I think you've been cloned.... Painters make good money Dirty hands, clean money.
I would have used a hand-held Graco/whatever airless just to do a garage door. (you can put about 20 gallons through them before they need to be rebuilt, that's like paintingthe exterior of four complete houses). The problem with painting with all sprayers is that you always need to screen your paint for blobs and chunks. If you don't you risk clogs, and lots of spattering.
Airless Sprayers are only good for spraying water based paints. If you decide to use oil based paints or stains, you're not going to be able to get your sprayer clean with solvents, and you will get electrical currents running through you when you paint. (For oil paints/stains, you want to use the automotive air paint sprayer with a compressor and air drier).
When you use calking, are you using silicone calking, or construction adhesive?
Nothing worse than letting your wood weather.
Painters Don't Make Any Money, neither do Government Whistleblowers !!
That's massive? lol
I could not help but to notice that you forgot to pressure wash the door.
The door is covered with dust and debris that the naked eye cant see.
Painting 101, never paint over dirt.i sure hope your customers don't see what you have done.
I wouldn't spray a job like that. Less prep and no cleaning the pump. Scrape prime, caulk, then paint. I also open the door and paint the edges. Only takes 10 minutes to roll with a roller.
What about between each panel?
Cabinets are a totally different animal. One must have a certain skill set, especially when spraying stain. Just my 2.5 cents. Otherwise, yes any monkey with a clown can paint. But it will show in the end.
