- How to professionally spray paint doors with a Graco 395 airless sprayer including set up of doors from Artisons Painting and Remodeling. I use a Graco Rac x with a 311 tip at the lowest possible pressure before lines or "fingers" on the sides of the spray pattern appear. I am using a Valspar Alkyd modified in water based door enamel paint in a semi-gloss white finish. Great demonstration . Highly professional . 👏👏
Thanks, I appreciate it
Thanks for sharing. Nice clean and well-organised set up. Perfect technique and results.
Thank you so much for the tips. I am not a pro but I am going to tackle some big home projects. You make it look so easy breezy which comes from much practice and having a great system.
Michelle S anyone can do it, picture moving you hand like a machine and it takes a little practice but it's all in your mind. Just remember to keep your hand moving
Thats the best demonstration of how to spray doors ive seen.
Thanks
I replaced all of my interior doors. I used a paint sprayer to paint them. After the prepping and masking the areas off, I was able to get the doors done quickly. I was pleasantly surprised at the results. I couldn’t have done it without your helpful instructions!!
Great. I'm so happy to hear that.
you did a perfect job painting my room.god bless you
Excellent instructions and advice. Really helpful and you touched on all the questions I had and more. Thanks.
Loved this...Doors looking good. Great set up. Thank you for this
Beautiful results with the spray painting technique.
Thank you for the tips. I feel more confident now to spray my cabinets.
Great instructional and tips...About to buy my first airless for a home we just purchased and needs all the interior trim/doors painted. Your video was very helpful thank you!
Glad to help.
Same here... I'm just in the researching phase of buying a an airless sprayer. I'm not sure what to buy, or even how to decide which one. I don't want a cheap one, but I also don't want to break the bank. I'm not a professional painter and I probably will only use it infrequently. But What I when I do use it, it will be for things I want to look great when the project is done. Like kitchen cabinets for example. I want them to look professionally done.
@@crtrue6432 prob best buying something from Wagner then , go for the middle of the road machines as the cheaper ones literally were designed to break after a couple uses on a diyer so to make money off parts etc , and making them think it was there fault also when in fact the machines and parts were made from cheap shite ,they all do it even the major league giant I. Sprayers Graco
Great job here. I spray trim as well and I always love peoples videos who do it right. Thanks for video.
Thanks for the compliment
Thanks for the video, the best airless sprayer instructions I have watched for doors. Very real time savings

Nice video. Thanks for posting.
That's a great finish and you make it look so easy.
Thanks
Wow! You made it look easy!!!
Joseph,
Great video, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise with all of us. I own and operate a small painting company in Calgary Canada 🇨🇦.
I will like to share a trick with you once spraying doors. I do it exactly the same way with the only difference that I use a heavy card board in top of the doors to prevent overspray on the ceilings.
Stay blessed amigo!
Great idea. Sometimes I use a swivel holder that mounts to an extension pole and you can by cardboard inserts. Once the cardboard gets trashed you can swap it out fast. We were painting the ceiling and walls in here so I wasn't concerned but great idea. Thanks for the encouragement and god bless you and your painting company. It's always great to share info and better each other, after all we are all brothers and sisters.

30 doors, 2 sides each = 60 sides. That’s 10 squats per door = 300 squats. Great workout! 😛BTW the doors look great 👍🏼
Thanks, actually like 600 squats. Great workout, ladder work is even more involved.
i love the door shapes it leaves on the wall too:)
Walls were getting primed and painted with light sand so not an issue. If doing it in a finished space plastic on walls and ceiling
Good job looks good

Thanks, a man of fine taste I see.
Really great video...I run a painting and decorating business in the UK and airless spraying is part of the setup, mainly used on new build work and commercial refurbs..a Graco 495 and we tend to follow the American style of doors & trim, then walls and lastly ceilings, all water-based products when spraying..although sometimes we will leave all the pre-primed doors until everything else is fully completed, then mask a whole room off (or two) and then airless spray 2 coats of water based satin or gloss to all the doors..very quick and a great finish....I have watched lots of airless spray painting videos on youtube, connected with the building industry obviously, and I have to say yours is easily the best!...Very well explained, concise and to the point and for the first time in ages, a guy that can actually spray properly (walk the walk), professional and the proper technique and execution...a great job done sir! and very good advice given and your technique was so good, it was a pleasure to watch...believe me, I have seen many videos on this subject on youtube, that have been painful to watch, performed by people who simply haven't got a clue..sometimes I just can't believe what I'm witnessing.....anyway, you did a really professional job and the doors had a great finish with the first coat...such a refreshing change to see someone do a proper spray job!...I just subscribed
Thank you very much. I appreciate it. God bless you and your business. Its amazing this day and age how we can all connect across the world and share our lives, talents and spirit with one another and encourage each other. Hopefully soon we can all ascend above primitive things like war and greed and come together as one, helping each other and our Earth in love and harmony.
I'm looking to set up myself here in UK. I just need few tips, where would I purchase that builders paper he uses and also the plastic sheeting to covering the doorways

Thanks for sharing! Instead of aquiring new doors you can paint them. And fast with the paint spray machine. Ill do it with our kitchen cabin doors as well. Thanks again. And Lord's blessings.
Thanks, you too. Multiple light coats to start is best for beginners. God bless you and your family.
Nice to see you using enamel, not like most of the others using water based
Yes, thanks. Enamel dries the hardest.
Hello, thanks for the very clear and straightforward video. I have a Wagner P130 with a 515 tip which I have used to paint ceilings and walls. Would this setup work for interior doors? I am a DIYer.
515 would work but you risk putting on too thick a coat unless you move very fast. Better to use a small tip size such as the 411 he used. It will take just a bit longer per door but much easier to do a good job because you can go a bit slower. A 309 tip is another option. If it is available for your sprayer, a FineFinsh tip would an even nicer finish. Good luck.
good video , and thanks for getting the shot at an angle close up to see the finish , tons people don't do that , and ANYTHING looks good "head on from 6 feet away" in a video .... gotta get the close up , at the angle , seeing the light from the side .... That's how ya do it .... good vid ..... can't tell you how many videos I've seen where I KNOW those cabinets look like crap "up close at an angle" but the people say how wonderful they are and show a head on shot from a distance ..... I watched one gal just sloppin paint on with chip brushes and sponge brushes , then sayin how great it looks .... ya right .... lol
Thanks
Thanks for the tip tip 😂 I tried using 515 & 315 and getting major runs and heavy holidays all over no matter how fast I moved. I’m going to try a 311 even though they say to use that for stain on the package. Wish me luck! Great work!
Fine finish low pressure tips 308 even better
For BM Advance? I'll try that too, thanks!@@artisonspaintingremodeling
@@WillLeingang advance and coronado door and cabinet paint are great
Awesome nice coatings. Do you sand between coats always or is there a way to get a second coat timed to chemically bond to the first. You know like a lacquer.
No need to sand, with water based coatings there is no need to sand between coats.
Awesome video! I should have watched this before I sprayed two doors. My pressure was up too high and i got a bunch of runs😌. I will turn my pressure down and use your method. Thanks for sharing. Also. I sprayed bith sides at once. Do you do that also?
Yes spray both sides light coats. 310 fine finish tip or regular 311 are good
What kind of paint are you using specifically?
Maybe try a .210 for the spines, less overspray, and a gun extension to save your knees and back. Thats just my preferred set up. .412 fflp is my go to tip for doors, .310 fflp for trim.
Thank you for excellent video, by the way Can I use HomeRight C800971 sprayer for room door Thanks
I've never heard of that one. Check reviews and Graco x5 is fine too
I prefer my own personally made rotisserie and rack on-site setup so it's always the perfect angle for spraying. I don't like leaning them on the wall because sometimes it warps
I've never had an issue
I've had it a few times with solid core doors that after the paint dried and took it off the wall the door was warped and curved
I like to shoot with the gun horizontal. Keeps the hand steady and stops the break in your pattern at the bottom. What about the overspray on your walls? Does it flash?
No flashing. We usually 2 coat and you can light pole sand walls after spray. Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams 2 coats on walls make everything look uniform
Yeah, the doors were all perfect as they were, perfectly hard good wood, perfectly flat and smooth, no dents or damages, no need to pain stripping or repairs etc. Easy
Yes. Stripping is a huge task.
Wow, you've made that look so simple, but I'm sure it's an art! Not sure I'm brave enough to attempt this myself.
Thanks, I appreciate it. Practice makes perfect.
Go for it ...the key to all this is the prep the spraying is the easy part ...what he failed to mention a d what's a crucial point to any good sprayer is the speed of your passes and also another crucial factor is the product your going to use , some of them finished are not suitable for spraying so always make sure to ask at your supplier of paint,is this product suitable for spray finishing with an airless type sprayer ! Also sometimes there is a requirement to thin your paint slightly so it passes through the machine easier . But what they never tell you is when you use a solvent to thin your paint like white spirit , it actually sets the dry time off way quicker , which in itself can be a great thing, the downfall to this it effect the overall look or finish of the paint so it can reduces the sheen slightly , a pro would notice that the normal Joe may not so if it's a high gloss finish your after I suggest using an additive instead of the spirit like using owatrol oil , you will maintain that glassy look using that , and the same with the softer looks like satin or eggshell
You should try Graco's FFLP tips. With your approach you will achieve excellent results.
I do use them. I find the 311 is faster and still has very good results. I use the FFLP tips like 310 on cabinets and other specialty items
Get a flexible whip hose at the pistol and you'll have more flex and less cramp in your hand . Great paint job!
Yes. This rig didnt have one hooked up but my other 4 have them.
Thank you for mentioning that. Whip hose makes a huge difference in Comfort. Makes a huge difference when spraying full cabinets in and out.
So what you do with the over spray? I'm very sure you have the mist getting on your other doors
No actually. Dial the pressure up to where the "fingers" disappear and you're good. I've never had an issue with finish.
Very cool to watch.
What model sprayer would you recommend for a homeowner doing the occasional project, like painting trim and doors?
Why are so many people jerks in the comments?? Life's too short to be a dick. Thanks for the video, and no matter what the method or the machine, it worked and I bet the customer was happy. Thanks for the tips.
I agree, thanks
I think a better option for turning the pressure down to reduce overspray or maybe you are concerned about runs would be to use a smaller tip. A smaller tip with the pressure turned all the way up is what should be used. It works every time for me.
Yup a 310
If you did that with my airless sprayer it would knock the door down... For jobs like that I really have to turn the machine right down but use a smaller tip and orpheus size too
@@cloutchasers8101 correct perfect for spraying wood and furniture doors trim etc
Nice
Nice job thanks what sort of paint were you spraying and do you thin it
pof1991 For this project we were using Valspar Perennial Semigloss lifetime warranty paint. It is self priming and doesn't run. Sherwin Williams bought Valspar and has since discontinued valspar pro solutions. Don't thin your paint just learn how each paint behaves. Sherwin Pro Classic is a very hard enamel but if sprayed too heavily between coats will run and ruin the job. Spray light coats with pro classic. BENJAMIN MOORE regal semigloss, aura semi gloss, advance are all good to spray too and regal and aura are heavier bodied. When starting out spray multiple light coats to see how the paint behaves and how fast you should move your hand to keep an even coat.
Chris Camacho the cabinet grade enamel paints dry hard and fast. Sherwin Williams proclassic semigloss is very good for not sticking. I would say the easiest way to remedy would be a light sand with 220 grit paper and apply 1 or 2 light coats of Sherwin Pro Classic. Did you spray or brush and roll? What paint and sheen did you use and maybe I can offer a better solution. Usually wall paint remains flexible and softer especially in eggshell or lower sheen finishes.
Chris Camacho the sheen is the shine of the paint. Flat has no shine, eggshell medium shine and semigloss a higher shine usually for doors and trim. One other solution is to sand the back of the trim stops where the doors touch when closed and apply a light coat. The paint film may have been too built up there and it's pressing into the paint bead and causing the sticking. Other wise if there is no Sherwin Williams by you ask home depot for a specific trim Enamel semigloss paint that has a hard finish when dry.
Great video! Do you put any protective covering on the walls??
We light sanded, primed and painted the walls, so no. If we were not painting walls then we would have ran a 9 foot roll of plastic ceiling to floor and plastic on ceiling.
@@artisonspaintingremodeling Thank you for the quick reply. I really appreciate it! I am a believer too!👌
Best to use the stack racks they avoid runs and the possibility of hitting the ceiling. Then you have to flip the doors so more hand contact. the Stack racks work well well.
When we flip the doors we only touch the 5 gallon stick without touching the doors. Does the rack mar the door surface being it is still curing, I would imagine spraying 2 coats wouldn't allow the doors to be done in a day. We never have sag or run issues.
Did you thin your paint at all to get it through the 411 tip? I didn't think latex would spray through an (x)11 tip without thinning. I like the idea of a finer finish, and the smaller tip size makes sense. just wasn't sure if it would push through that tip.
Ger Sant no thinning, maybe thicker paints need it but regular rac x tips with 311 or 411 usually done have a problem if you're using a 395 or higher.
I'm using a smaller X7 pump, so perhaps I will need to thin it a bit. Thanks again for your speedy response.
Ger Sant a 313 and 413 would work fine without thinning possibly
Thanks for the video. How long should I wait before I spray the second coat?
Each paint has different recoat times. Follow the can and also if you have a fan pulling the air out giving the room negative pressure it will help drying time. If not it will take longer to dry but I would say 4 hours depending on the recommended recoat time on the actual can.
Artisons Painting & Remodeling thank you for your response. Would I have to lightly sand the first coat before putting on the second?
@@Persiancouplelife no, unless there is dust or other contaminates in the room to settle on the drying doors. That's why it's good to have a sealed room inside with no dust on floor and new rosin paper. So no need to sand between coats
Why do you use a 411 tip when it says on the package 411 tips are for stains? I used a 311 tip and the glossy paint I was spraying atomized before hitting the surface. I sprayed outside, it was about 78-80 degrees. Any advice? I also had problems with “fingers”
Even after turning the pressure up.
311 and 411 are good for doors. also FFLP graco tip 308 and 310 are great. play with how far away you are and use an alkyd modified enamel that self levels. maybe too long a hose or clog in filter thats why there was fingers. also outside will dry faster with wind and higher temps. 308 fflp indoor spray is great
Airless, but would use a whip hose to make it easier and prefer to use door stackersrather than stand the doors but good video and knows some spray technique.
For existing interior doors that just need a new paint color, do you have to sand, prime, and paint them?
No. It's good to clean them to remove grease or contaminants prior to paint. If they are white you can get away with 1 coat but 2 light ones will give you a more professional finish. Most modern paints are self priming or just go with a self priming paint for better adhesion or a urethane modified trim paint is the tops.
@@artisonspaintingremodeling great thanks!
