As someone who has painted many cars, on anything semi-gloss or higher, every time you let go of the trigger you need to start spraying outside your area so it is already flowing by the time the paint stream comes in contact with the piece being sprayed. It prevents imperfections which show up in high gloss paints.
This is interior paints tho pal
@@stellarlivingstoned What he said still holds true, if you're spraying semi or high gloss.
Thank you chris and your team. I bought a sprayer a year ago after watching your videos. I spray the trim and doors on my rentals now and it makes the job so much faster and better. I used to pay to have decks and exterior stairs painted but I do it all myself much cheaper. You have really helped my business. I'm doing a 4 plex that I just bought next. Painting has become somthing I enjoy. Thanks again from Alabama.
Great job, congrats! Very inspiring, prep work is usually the hardest part but your spraying abilities are awesome. Anyone watching can tell you guys are pros on what you do. Thank you for sharing and yes by the way never mind the negative comments :)
Thanks for the support!
Wow!!! I love how fast it is and how smooth the results are. Amazing! Good job guys :)
I liked the way Chrissie sprayed the door and other frames more controlling and took more relaxing position!
"He has the right to criticize who has the heart to help." Great job - thanks for demonstrating how you do it.
Thanks for watching!
to be fair, he asked in the video if ppl see any mistakes;)
I like the #1guy for the door, he angled his fan as he was spraying the face more to hit the insets better plus sprayed edges twice. I love watching someone else’s spraying for a change😁👍
The most important video you've produced for our industry. The baseboard and window sill stuff is especially relevant
I work in the paint department at The Home Depot in Windsor Ont. Canada and I use this site for most of my how to and product know how. thank you so much.
johnathan913 That’s awesome when people are dedicated to learn to better serve customers. Most people at our hardware stores lack the knowledge to even assist customers.
You should really just consider saying I don't know because you don't right? You probably also won't give somebody tips on how to perform brain surgery on themselves. These "painters" are a joke and so is hd paint dept
Windsor.... been there! Awesome 👌
For those who find the video too long, here are some of the tips:
1. Keep the trigger pulled (this eliminates spits)
2. Start with a plan on difficult projects
3. Work from top to bottom whenever possible
4. If you are right-handed, it is good practice to start on the right
Thank you!🏆
What what? Lol... left or right handed it does not matter weather you start accordingly. As long as your passes are 50% and the same distance and the same speed it does not matter.
You missed a lot of other important subtle things here
My dad retired from the marine corps started painting airplanes during the week and houses on the weekends. I learned from him and now I paint using an 18 inch roller never have to take time covering and most of the time I don't have to tape anything but I recently had someone give me a brand new in the box magnum x7 and have some mobile homes to rehab so I'm going to use them to learn how to spray
We all have our own ways of spraying for sure. Personally I never used a wand when spraying woodwork and always took off knobs and hinges. Fun to watch someone else do the spraying.
A wand wtf is that
That blew my mind
Use glass mask and that will save a lot of time
Lose the wand waste of time
Awesome video too. I am still trying to master the roller but love watching you guy use the sprayer. OUT!
CottnMouthKilla NC Hamilton 4 inch green medium pile for doors 👌🏼
Great video. They are always fun and informative. Excellent! Rock on Chris!
So many awesome videos from these Paint Life guys! I've learned a lot in such a short amount of time. Thanks!
Hello, very instructive video, lots of details ...
Greetings from Croatia.

Great videos and thanks for sharing. I am always learning something new. One thing I don't understand or see resolved is the build up on the walls around trim. I never see anyone brush it out and would think what I see on the walls next to the trim would be lumpy build up when dry and would show when rolling the finish coat on the walls. I am about to spray all the trim in my house and don't know what to plan for. Thanks.
Carl K it will be good if he answers your question i wonder that too
I like these guys, and I'm pleased to see I guess I'm doing it similarly. I was told by an automotive painter to quite flourishing/flaring at the end of my stroke and keep the spray pattern perpendicular to the surface for an even spread. I find it difficult, but I'm retraining.
That is right way to spray keeping it perpendicular to the surface(as much as you can) and to let go after each stroke they weren’t lying to you.
I just picked me up a Titan 400 for painting the inside of my house. I just finished prepping the trim and now its time to learn to paint with a paint sprayer. Thank you for all the tips.
Awesome🤙
Rip house
Did you make a mess ?
I have panted 5 aircraft (not all done at the same tine - over 5 years), using a Wagner airless. I had an arm like a gorilla when finished. It does a good job, once you know the limitations, like when it is about to go 'dry' to avoid sputtering.
Yes, thanks for sharing and watching Paul!
I'm sure the results were amazing. Great job! I'm pretty sure I haven't ever had a job that didn't have a mistake of some kind. That's what touch up is for. Just saying. 👍
You guys work hard , and have a good skill , it's art on a large scale be proud
That's really good. I can't get over how little over spray there is when looking at the side view.
Ignore the critical comments from the couch crew. You guys are pros--that's clear. We all have little issues when spraying that much trim. I'm amazed that John is able to get that much paint to hang in one coat. He really puts it on heavy, and yet I trust that he doesn't have any issues. Thanks for sharing!
You're right Kevin I was just having a little fun with him is all I watch his show all the time and think he does a great job also He is very fortunate and one of the lucky ones to have such a show and I hope my artist channel does even half as well.......Peace......BTW I am not a "couch crew" I just celebrated my 50th year of being in the industry (now retired) I'm 57 and had a brush in my hand all my life
Okay, sorry for assuming you were a DIYer. I also have been drywalling and painting for 15 yrs, and have been on my own now for the last 3yrs, and I know (and so do you) that these guys know what they are doing. I’d hire John or Zach without knowing anything further than what I’ve seen on the channel.
Don't sweat it...... when you get my age all you can do is have little fun with what you know and maybe some mentoring.....sometimes I'll push the limits and have to apologize Not many will forget you though 😋
Do you think the way they do it by installing and then spraying is the way to go or do you think spraying trim before install is easier? I'm about to start my own large trim job and trying to decide which way to go.
Prime and paint it before installation then go back and fill / face everything to remove any marks / dirty spots from install.
My favorite part was the very end when he was explaining to the other guy how to paint the window, I get drips in 1 place when I’m spraying... the corners, learned a few things, my next job will be better
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
I am painter from San Diego California. I love your videos bro !!! You guys are awesome!!!! Painters
🤙
I like Chris style of spraying the door it's perfect.
great work , must be a massive amount of trim and doors to go through all that prep work just to spray a lived in home .is that a number 3tip?
Very good technique but the over spray on the walls tends to show up even if you prime it...I like to keep my doors off the wall. I love the tips you provide #paintlife
Awesome video guys! Your pointers are excellent. Thank you for putting together these videos, I really look forward to them!
Thanks for the support Mike!
Coming from automotive paint spraying, it was an adjustment using an airless sprayer. I applaud painters that use it everyday very fatiguing and clean up sucks lol.
I'm definitely going to take a spraying it's so much easier than painting with a brush and roller I barely earn a living off painting and have to regularly work a 12 hour shift ..
Chris, long time fan of your videos man, keep up the great work. I'm about to paint my whole house after a pretty lengthy remodel. What are some tips for one-coating trim heavy like you guys are doing without drips?
You guys are AWESOME! Love the tips and tricks!
Dude, I love your videos. I'm not a painter but I've learned so much by watching. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
You are welcome!
Yea. I'm more concerned about the outlines in the wall around the doors you sprayed them against. I always stand them up like you did in the second scene.
i was thinking the same thing
Also what about the semi gloss paint on walls? Maybe I'm wrong but I thought you couldn't paint flat over gloss for adhesion problems!
Yeah it'll take at least one and a half minutes to roll a first coat on that wall
Definitely got over spray all over the lids, chandeliers, light fixtures, everything that wasn't masked.
So true
The crew ! Y'all boys are better than most .Very informative and thanks for the tips. Great channel !
Wow, thanks!
Thank you for sharing. I never use a paint spray before, but I really want to learn, and what is the best spray paint for a new beginners. Thank you
John y’all still using solo? And if so what sheen? Trim and doors looked great!!
Looks good. In the prpcess of starting my own paint business. Have the same machine hope it holds up. Keep up the good work
Thanks for watching!
You make it look easy... good job sir.
I can see Christy does a few things like I do, ie door checks first then panels clip the trigger on each stricken to prevent over coating on changing direction and paint frame sequencing as I would with a brush
I tilt my doors at a bit of an angle and keep them spaced apart so overspray doesn’t affect the finish. I also spray the heel and toe before I shoot the whole door. Technique could be improved with 2 of the guys. But I agree that trim looks better when you’re able to spray it as opposed to brushing ( in some instances) Also think the pressure should’ve been lower seemed a bit too high for me. Def seemed like the high pressure could’ve caused some overspray on your finished ceilings. Being a painter we are all particular to how we do things. Great video though love the gear #painterslife
I think when he ask if we see the mistake when spraying the doors. I believe that what he was referring to. They (doors) were to Close together
Water based gloss on the ceilings. Over spray on everything seems legit 😂😂
You guys are the best and no doubt about that! Great tips and instructions given! I truly appreciate this great videos and keep up the fine work! Awesome work!
Our pleasure!
I was having problems with spits! Saved the day with the answer right at the end.
I’ve never gotten spits from an airless unless their is trash so you have to strain it in a clean bucket or the paint is starting to harden but that’s more industrial oil based/fast cure paints
Get rid of the wand and get an adjustable spray pole..u will save on clean up time.. plus I spray my window sills first as all the overspray will melt into the sill..it also eliminates runs/sags on the lower trim..
Awesome, thanks for the tips Jeremy!
Runs and sags are caused from 4 things: sprayer pressure is set to high, not the right tip for finish work, to much over lap, and hand stalls, learn how to adjust the pressure on your sprayer, use correct tip, watch the fan overlap, watch for any pause time, move move move.
I don't understand why they use the tip they do in this vid, Size 210 fine finish is the way to go. And listening to their pump the pressure ajustment is on the highest setting. The orange peal has to to be outrageous.
How long did it take you to prep? Is that semi-gloss you are spraying?
What sheen did you end up using on the walls?
Most of times people use eggshell finish. it is easier to clean. But it's harder to do touch ups if you need. Matte or Flat finish are easier to touch up but harder to clean, and I would avoid use flat finish on bathroom or kitchen areas
@@diegodto use Aura matte its the best
Its almost like a ballet with paint! I think i'm a little old and out of shape to do those moves. They sure make it look easy!
Man, your arm moves with the precision of a robotic arm! Great video!!
thank you for your wonderful.....,,,,,
@4:40 hows the overspray on that closet rod?
I have always brushed out the trim, I sprayed the trim on a job last spring and that was a game changer. The results were amazing. I'm noticing you guys spray the crap out of the trim, no problems with runs?
marcelguarachi they’re using a small tip size easy to get away with it without heavy spots
Johnny Montana just because it's a smaller tip doesn't mean he won't have runs. I bet you he had a couple of runs. He sprayed pretty heavy and sometimes paint just doesn't want to hang right. He has very good technique. I just like spraying my trim with 2 light coats so I know there isn't any runs or sags. The only bummer about spraying is having to touch up. If you have to touch up you can't use a brush or roller because it will flash.
only use the green Graco tips on trim.... they're amazing!
One tip that helps avoid paint running is crank up the heater.
Great work Chris and the team!!! Tons of helpful tips!! Can you do a video all about paint “Spits” from pressure, tip size, viscosity, gun plunger wear, where you aim when shooting etc...??? thanks! keep up the great work. and im def going to get one of the spray guard holders from your site!
This looks like so much fun!
If those pink filters are 3M P100s be careful because those are not rated for paint. Switch over to the white cartridges.
Thanks for the tip, much appreciated!
I thought it was a preference to get high off the material. It does filter particulates, but that's all.
I have painted high-end and low-end houses for 35 years and have never painted doors without taking the door handles and hardware off, that doesn't make sense!
I have been a painter for 40 years and couldnt agree more with you....They took the time to take the hinges off but not the handles also the paint buildup on the mortises will give them fits when they try to refit the doors.
Painters are awesome people! I'm not a painter but I do spray firestop I use a titan impact 840
We use to always take the door handles off. Then we started taping the handles after a few times we took everything off and the inside of handle was broken and I had to buy handles. So we never take off we tape just like they do. It works great and is faster.
That's the first thing I noticed as well
Well everyone does it their own way. I don’t let any of my workers take door knobs off any longer. To many problems with broken knobs and things when it came take to put them back on. Tape is faster anyway and it looks the same if we took them off so customers don’t care. They just want everything to look great.
👊🏼 thank you again , your vídeos helped me a lot 👍🏼👍🏼
I have been using the air pressure spraying gun for 16 years with fine painting. They do a good job but there were some corners they didn't cover well with paints especially when they don't take the right position flipping your whole back backward! I noticed that guy sprayed the masked glass window while doing so! But still good job!
I have a question. Does it create a problem when painting the walls with the semi gloss over spray on the walls. Does it have to be sanded or primed before the walls can be painted? I assume it is much easier to cut in a nice line with the molding being painted first. Great job!! Thank you for taking the time to make the videos.
The unique problem is than u need to cutting with the color wall 2 or 3 times bcz the semigloss is hard to cover it up than u waste more time...
If you cut it in the use a mini roller right behind you will have no issues . Also flat or matte will solve issue as well
Its gonna be visible the spray underneath the roller paint
I've seen 2" masking tape or two quickly put down on the wall around the frames to minimize the amount of overspray on the walls and avoid "shiners "
@@matthewaguirre9206 you have tear out on the drywall. I have found that a better controlled technique with less over spray plus and flat palm sander and sanding sponge after to scuff it well. Will bring the enamel down closer to drywall status. Although you will never get the same absorbsion and that is the true issue. It can be cut in in two coats though but even a quick 3 cuts for me if necessary is better than all that masking and failure and respackling then touching up again lol
Hi from france! Have you ever expérience thé clean shot valve from graco tout avoid spits. I ve used it for quite some time now ans it really works .rgds ben
Best $100 I ever spent for paint accessories. Especially when you need 40"+ extension. Then it's a must. I use it with no extension. I got so used to it when I sprayed a gun without it, it seemed like the normal 'in gun' needle reacts SO slow when the trigger is released.
I recommend door stackers for spraying doors if you have more than a few to paint. Takes a little setting up but we've found them extremely good. Can flip the doors and paint both sides. Nothing up against the wall. All stacked nicely to the side while drying. Best part is if you put the paint on a little thick, the paint won't start sagging.
I recommend door stackers too. but be aware that warping can occur if doors are left too long in a horizontal position.
We use door brackets that screw into tops of doors. Standing them up in the middle of a room connected together at a right angle from each other. Able to spray both sides without touching the door, and spray all doors at same time. From prime to finish. Only way to go if doing more than a single door.
You're the best teacher! Thank you so much
Double spraying at the top and bottom.......am I wrong...... but would it have been better to do one very light coat and then follow up ???
Asking with respect.......
You guys are clearly experts.....
Always two light coats
Please consider wearing safety glasses! Your eyesight is so very precious! Thanks for all the great videos! Steve Thaw, T & T PAINTING CO, Moraga, CA

shut up steven
Your a good instructor I learn alot , screw the negative comments
When you are spraying a whole house try to have a helper taking care of the hose to avoid it touching areas where you already did
Yes🤙
Two noobs
Amazing work. I don't know how you all are keeping the atomized paint from settling on things all throughout the house. I see that you have a lot taped/bagged off, but at one point you were spraying trim next to what appeared to be a wood door. Was the atomized paint under tight control, or did you have plans to repaint that brown door, and you didn't care about contamination?
Looked like that was the front door and it was caulked n preped for paint. I'm guessing it needs to be primed still before putting final coat on so he didn't spray it in the video. Which the priming is normally done already before finish coat but he may not have done it yet for video or timing purposes. Who knows.
I'd definitely cover that Chandelier though. Prbly was a pain to clean. There has to be some over spray dusting on it with that amount of spraying.
On Smooth Wall and imperfect Smooth Wall I try not to spray doors on the walls seem to flash an orange peel or knockdown I never have any problem must be nice to have some painters that want to work can't find them in Sacramento keep up the good work happy painting trails
A mobile custom made plank would be a great help to you (step over if need be height)
Great painting advice, solid experience I can see that makes a real tradesman...
I paint for a living and get addicted too watching people spray been watching videos since 11 it’s now almost 6pm smdh!!!! Nice video Chris definitely knows what he is doing I feel John sprayed extremely heavy like very very very very heavy ..... like heavy heavy but no one has said anything that I’ve seen . So idk .... but I do know that was effffing heavy as hell..... no matter what material it was I don’t see any material hanging that damn good lol . Hats off to the boss man though very nice technique
I would have to go to a mental hospital having to cover everything. I do new construction homes. When I spray my trim, I don't have to cover anything. I don't have to worry about the floors....nothing.
What sort of paint do you use for wood work to finish in the airless sprayer
normally people prefer semi gloss or satin finish on wood work
If its not prefinished it needs primer first exterior or interior satin or semigloss interior usually and a solid body stain exterior or superpaint
Great job Chris 👍🇺🇸
Big fan I'm learning allot, keep them coming. I especially like how you guys take your time to explain the details.
Thanks for the support David!

Used an airless sprayer today for the first time and I want to know how you prevent so much overspray in the air. The room i was spraying was clouded out within minutes. I was covered in paint specs and if I didnt shut a door the whole house (empty) slowly filled with overspray dust.
So what's the trick? I had the paint flow down to almost minimum as well. Thank!

So this is the follow up video on 3 guys one door? I am not disappointed.😲👍🏿
Great video, awesome!!!
A bit much rist movement, keep the gun facing straight on and equal distance away from what you're painting as you spray it. Start moving the gun ever so slightly before you pull trigger and keep it moving after you let off trigger to prevent any build up or lap marks. Not a critique, just proper technique.
Awesome, thanks for sharing Audy!
I was kinda amazed to not see the finger feather technique on the doors. You can minimize overspray by letting off the trigger as you hit the end of your piece, but you need to remove the extension. A 515 tip is a bit more efficient as a commenter stated earlier. My back hurts just thinking about the extra times I would need to bend over with the 300 series tip.
No matter how I feather it, I have way too much splatter when I stop the spray. I'll try this technique.
I use a 510 on doors. Way fewer times up and down. But then after 45 years of painting I’m always looking for ways to make my body last another 45 years.
Plus I don’t use an extension on trim due to spits.
How does the trim paint on the wall effect the wall texture and look of the future wall color?
MrMnchstr none st all in most cases. As long as the paint isn't a high gloss you shouldn't notice much if anything with the proper cutting in.
MrMnchstr none at all, unless the paint is super heavy
Okey dokey then.
makemeajmod if the trim paint is SW satin and the wall paint is Matte, will the satin not show thru?
You'll mostly be brushing and rolling the walls so you'll get a stippled texture. I've never ran into any problems
Your videos are helping me a lot on what I do. You guys are real pros. Awesome workmanship!!!

You guys are awesome! Such good painters - I wish you were in Wisconsin
Thanks for the support Dave!
Great job, but take the handles off if you remove them from jam,, it's killin me 😂
Yup. If you gonna take that kinda time ,take off the knobs putem ina bucket🤣
@John Sickler I agree with John popping the door off the hinges is fast compared to taping everything surrounding it.
John Sickler often the hardware will move or if you would want to change the hardware, it’s better to have the surface under match
If I'm painting for a home owner's job who opens that door every day... the hardware comes off. If it's a rental, a lease or a resale, it stays on. Sorry renters, leasers, buyers... time is $$.
It's one of those videos that show you're really good at what you do! But PLEASE use the carbon respirator!
Yes!
I want learn more I like how fast you did the job .. in and out ..
thank you i still learning a lot from you.. 🙏🙏
Lmao, I fishing know John Cena did home improvement videos.
🤣🤣 same
I was confused when video first started haha Jonh Cena’s lil bro!
That explains why I can't see him 🤣🤣
Did someone forget some tape on one of the latches?
nope
;-) Heheheheh It's hell putting yourself in the public eye, isn't it? People just love busting your b@$%& Welcome to the world of video my friend LOL
Home Improvement How To's Just a guess from Apprentice Do-it-yourselfer.
Home Improvement How To's By the way, I would never question you guys had it not been mentioned in the video lol.
That's a good point, lol Don't ever open yourself to critisism (sp) I think you guys are doing a great job anyway However don't let OSHA catch the guys spraying with those beards and without "spray socks" over those pumpkins
U guys doing Magic job!!!
Removing the handles and latches is quicker than masking them. . I have never sprayed with the airless it looks like a much better option . Cheers from Australia.
1st. Remove all hardware from the doors. All have holidays behind the handle now. 2nd. The paint on the wall after spraying the doors will flash. 3rd. 410/12 will cover better.
I agree with you 100%.. it takes 5 minutes to remove the hardware. I stand my doors in the middle of the room in a V pattern and I like to use a 415 tip for doors and 211 for trim.
Never seen a “professional” spray doors without removing handles ...and get them off the walls with sticks. Paint buildup will be noticeable. Hacks.
spraying my second unit today.Tthis videos given me a bit more confidence! Appreciate it fellas!
Perfect video!!
What mistakes did you see when painting the first three doors?
Almost all of them
3 men, 3 doors, 1 spray gun. Good title for tv show, lol
Heheheheh.......Union Job......whoops did I say that?😚
Thanks for the vids and all the tips this will help me alot
Glad to help
very good tech !do whats easier for you only you an the owner know how they want things painted and done !
The first door may have some runs
Even at 1200 psi, to spray a smooth door that much I would expect runs. If it was a textured door maybe not but that was pretty brave.
Painter number 3 did the smoothest application, he stayed on center with the spray pattern, bending his body and not his arm. Prep fell short, more masking, especially a chandelier which cannot be cleaned if fouled by over spray, also, why are the switches and receptacles not taped? They are a pain to clean. Where's the General? Why isn't he up your ass on this?
