The bolt on mine is 18mm, the one size my impact set does NOT have. I have a 3/8 drive 6 side but that nut is not moving. Not sure I can put heat to it or if that would even help.
Excellent video. You do things like many driveway mechanics have to. No lift, not always the perfect tools. Thank you. My only question is can the harmonic balancer be pressed back together on an arbor or hydraulic press? I guess that would be dumb after all that work. Thanks again.
Rubber is degraded thats why it separates. Would be foolish to try and would damage rubber even more. You dont want the. Pulley part of the balancer flying off under the hood could cause much more damage and for the 20 or 30 bucks for a new balancer it doesn't make much sense to me.
Thanks for the video! I did mine today. You cannot remove the harmonizer bolt's washer on my 03'. Harmonizer bolt head is 18mm. Hardest part was the seal (not shown in video), make sure you have something just the right size and flat to drive the seal if you're going to try it.
Hi. I had the same problem with my chevy venture but nevertheless I changed the harmonic balance and the crankshft position sensor it didn´t start up. Any Ideas?
I actually just did the job on a pontiac montana. Basically the same car. The reason your harmonic balancer didn't come out with the puller is because you kept the washer in. For future reference remove that washer and thread the bolt in some of the way. Then use the puller to press against just the bolt. that will remove the balancer much easier and less chances of damage to the crankshaft. I am doing tons of work on my 2002 pontiac montana. And from the sound of it you also have the piston slap upon cold startup!
The Venture I just got last fall has 229000 miles on it, tranny has some slip on start off but keeps going. It was a Fla car with little rust and in NH rust never sleeps. It's hard to work on the car at 67 years old in the driveway. It takes a few beers to even start.
I have an 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette same setup. But I cant get the Harmonic Balancer to install. The bolt is O 10.9 and i think its the wrong one. It looks like someone messed with it previously. But the balancer will not go down the crankshaft and I dont know why. Anyone have any suggestions????
My Harmonic balancer came off while starting the car the rubber had a broken line running through it; the bolt is still attached to the engine though. Should I just pop a new one on?
Correction; a shear pin runs through a shaft, commonly on farm equipment, and if an excessive amount of torque occurs, it will shear off to protect other components. That item is a key that goes in a keyway to enable a pulley on a shaft. But good job otherwise.
Why didn't you change the seal while you had the harmonic balancer off . The seal is cheap . Also put some silicone sealer on the key way to avoid any oil leakage. Plus you could have used a flat washer on the end off the crankshaft to keep from ruining the threads or a puller with a flat end attached to the main bolt . There are several types of crankshaft pullers out there. I know cause i just replaced the crankshaft seal on my 97 venture 3.4L engine. Still a good video anyways.
He may have been thinking of the ckp system variation learn procedure which is suggested whenever the balancer is removed as well as certain other repairs. Crankshaft position sensor is behind the balancer. There's a sort of drive cycle you can go through for the relearn or easier with the Tech 2. Though I don't know that it's always necessary.
Good shit! Man you did this fast this took me a few hours! It wasnt easy using the special tool...
Thanks for doing this video
Hopefully mine comes off and goes on as smoothly as yours looked like it did
Wish you would’ve said what size the bolts are for balancer removal
Thanks for the video! Just what I needed to fix my neighbors Silhouette.
Hey boss I have a chevy venture 2002 can you tell me how to remove. A seal bearing from crankshaft
Behind the harmonic balancer is that the crank shaft position sensor ?
Yes it is. I'm currently changing that one and the other one behind the starter. Hopefully changing them will fix the problem I'm having.
@@bennyrichard6537 how did it go

Blake Johnson Can't remove the washer, it's machine mated to the bolt.
Thank you, You Rock as a Shadetree mechanic, but without the shade. lol

Tengo que dejar el tornillo del medio Del damper Puesto
Nice job but way easier to take the washer off of the balancer and put bolt back in. That way you font have to take the 3 bolts out under car.
Good stuff..

Great job, fyi harmonic balancer has no association with timing

Take out the washer before using the puller it will pop right off
