I just did a 3.5 crank pulley last week. I played with a couple of my pullers and then ordered the right puller from Amazon. Got it the next day, had it replaced in less then ten minutes.
Still watching...my son asked if it was me on the screen, and I said, no, it's my buddy Brian. I may not have become a mechanic without him. My son said, "I love him." :)
@@wyattoneable and his advice is great too. I haven't watched him nearly as much as Brian, but that's probably because Brian has earned RUclips's favour more thanks to fans, friends, and certainly his hardwork. (I'm not ruining this chat talking about the algorithm have I?)
I was Jumping out of perfectly good Aircraft from 40,000+ feet having a blast at 19. Had I known I was going to survive all that stupid behavior, I probably would have been a lot nicer to my body, because a 80, it hurts a lot. You are a lot more patient that I am, I wouldn’t be able to do most of that one handed. Thank you for posting.
I have some video using a harmonic balancer puller that I'll still edit up at some point, but I'll link to this video as being way more boss with way more needed tips, which I didn't know like lubing for reinstalling to protect the seal. I've only used lube on removal...maybe it still helped on the install. Did that protect the seal which keeps oil in the engine?
It did protect the seal going in. PLEASE DO upload your video. Every one has a different learning style an there are so many things you could add to this. This video is on an odd duck engine. This engine / HB combo was only around for about 4-5 years on only two models of Oldsmobile.
You're not kidding! It's not exactly like the Northstar either. Sadly this car is in the wrecking yard now. GM spent SO MUCH $$$$ on this engine design and then dumped it after only like 4-5 years when they dumped Pontiac and Oldsmobile.
For my special bolts & improvised tools , I mark them with white or yellow nail varnish and store them in a separate box . All ways enjoy thanks Brian .
You've got that right. He more thoroughly covered this than I've ever done across every pulley I've ever installed or removed. I commented to my boss the other day that I did things like when I was a young tech that jobs would take less time. It takes less time to not do all the best things for the best outcome. I'm still faster than I was, but I could be much faster if I didn't apply so much to good outcomes. Oh well, I have a sense of pride, and so does Brian.
Hey cool! I'm on at 3:15 via sticker. Thanks buddy! AutoBravado sticker...really intended that darn sticker to be a lot bigger. The maker made it half the size I asked for, lol. But hey, it made it fit. :) :) :D
Rig up a shoulder mount for a little go pro cam. If the framing sucks in post you'll always have the wide shot of the stationary cam as backup. I was thinking you could go with a headcam like that another guy uses, but when you're working on something below your line of sight like this it might not work right.
I really need the tip to pop it and not just use the puller. I bet that'll save some of the threads on my pullers. People. Don't just listen. Read his text comments on how he keeps even his Chinese puller for 8 years. Details in the description.
Funny, I've been thinking about Milwaukee fuel for my next big purchase but seeing your Metabo, I think I'd get more tools for my money, lol. @@briansmobile1
Wow!! That the hard way.. There is the right tool for the GM and Dodge for that👍🏻 make that job nothing to do both coming off and back on.... You May want to get it..
I've used the Dodge one before as a rental. That's what it looked like to me. It came off slow- was kind of rusted. I do like the fatter drive bolt on the Chrysler puller. More compact too.
I could be wrong, but I thought these have a specific (very tight) torque sequence. The oil pump is on the crank, right behind the timing cover. It's not keyed onto the crankshaft. Instead, the harmonic balancer squeezes the pump to the crank. That said, a bolt too loose could cause the oil pump to slip later on...
@@briansmobile1 just wanted to make sure you know, because the video only shows you zipping it on with the impact, but I remember the torque sequence being so tight that no impact could ever do it!
Paraffin wax can penetrate much deeper than petroleum based products. Beeswax is even better because bee spit molecules are even smaller and move to heat. Propane torch warm, much easier.

Yeah the tire shine doesn't bother me as much as no gas had another car today no gas in the car whatsoever 2014 Chrysler 300 S needed the oil filter adapter replaced so yeah you have to run the engine no gas
Idk how you guys make a living doing this crap. I spent 6 hrs on my motor mounts in my 6.5 and that's after the trans has been dropped and the front diff is out. Nothing wants to line up and no room for force. I mean its only 8 bolts right? Now hard could it be?
It takes practice, tools, and experience. Even then, it takes even more experience and training as the dicipline is in constant evolution. Where you make money is repeating the same job and getting to where the flat rate system kicks into your favor. New mechanics lose their *&^% in the beginning. Shops take a huge risk with hiring new guys- the quit rate is very high and they really don't produce much in the beginning. I know MANY good mechanics who leave to pursue $ being a waiter or recreational drugs / alcohol. It's not for everyone.
amzn.to/2GmkkIP $60 isn't bad. This would be nice for pulling it off. I don't see how the other set would be a very helpful alternative to what I used to drive it on though.
briansmobile1 I put a link to a master Installer kit just for everyone can see what it looks like.. You can find them cheep if you know what to look for!! Both tools sets go hand in hand with each other... Never seen both sets in 1 kit “Yet” but it would be nice.
"Mom watch, I can do this job with one hand"! Nice Brian, your pretty talented.
This sure tops my comment about enjoying some one handed action, lol.

How did you stop the harmonic balancer from rotating in the beginning to loosen the bolt?
Have you figured it out? Same problem
Impact wrench won’t work and don’t have access to air impact
Thanks Brian , you get to work out the problems one handed and we get the short cuts save time and aggravation Thanks Again

Watching the removal is making me more and more interested in seeing the install. Edit: Well that was easy enough.

Is the harmonic balancer bolt regular or reverse thread?
I'm having one hellofa time finding a crank pulley, I'm going to remove the old one and see if I can get it rebuilt, any ideas on that?

I've been thinking a lot about that. I got the new GP7B for that- just need to implement the mount.
Will an Oldmsmobile Silouette 3.5L fit ?
Without the extra M14 bolt you could a longer smaller bolt that does not thread in to the crank, or possibly a modified 3/8 extension.
I did the exact same thing, on a Buick I think 🤔, until I realized it had puller provisions. Great info. By the way, I loved the Perkins series.
