  • First project in a series using 2 1/2 inch strips to make scrappy quilts! This will be a great way to make beautiful, scrappy, quilts. My goal is to use up strips that have accumulated in my lifetime of quilting!
I've challenged myself to do a new project each month using only 2 1/2 inch strips from my scrap buckets. I have always saved leftover strips from projects and cut up small leftover fabric from yardage into 2 1/2 inch strips and put them in a bucket for some "future" project . The future is now! It is time to tame the scrap bucket and use up these strips. I'll always have a scrap bucket of strips because I'm constantly adding to it but I want to get it down to just ONE bucket instead of three! This series will last until I'm down to one bucket. Let's be honest, it will take at least 2 years to use up enough strips to make a difference! So join me on this project adventure to use up fabric scraps!

I'm 83 and have TONS of scraps. But I make any size little blankets and donate them to my local animal shelters, I can't take my fabric stash with me so I'm making random style quilts. Besides the animals don't complain. Besides now they have something that belongs to them. Use towels as batting. They will love you for it.

I was just thinking of trying to use towels as batting on my small quilts. I have the same issue, lots of fabric I inherited from my mom. She decided she's going to retire from sewing and gave me all her sewing machines, notions, scraps and fabric. I've been sewing 4 years now and have not made a dent lol.

I've been quilting for over 20 years and I don't even have half a bucket of scraps, much less enough 2.5" strips. (I don't buy pre-cuts.) but I like this so well, I am considering cutting one strip off of each of my yardage pieces just to have enough. Thanks for the idea.

I really enjoyed your video and way of teaching. I am new to quilting. The donated fabric scraps I was given I quilt together into totes and purses. I take half the money I receive and buy broad cloth solid colors with to to make the backing for scrappy quilts. I then give those quilts to the homeless shelter nearby. I live in Mississippi, and between the hurricanes and tornados, many people of all walks of life find themselves in a shelter. The workers see my truck and cone out eagerly to help me unload. It is contagious to give to others. I'll try your scrappy quilt suggestion. I subscribed so I can learn more from you.

I've been cutting 5in and 2.5 in strips and squares since March. I figured I had about 4 bins, and then it looked like 8 bins like yours. Now I think am Almost coming to the end at about twice that, I have a few more bins to go. I am never going to let my scraps get so far away from me. I’m learning about how to do scrappy. I have always been a fan of everything matching and I’m moving a little more out of my comfort zone. 😊

Wonderful inspiration. Choosing the right colorways is a great way to get started. Looks much nicer than just sewing miscellaneous strips together.

Yes. A somewhat planned color scheme looks more purposeful/cohesive. However, I also Love total scrappiness with white, or very dark sashing/background. The possibilities are endless ❤

Thank you! I have so many scraps and want to make a scrappy quilt, but I am so nervous to do this. It will be my first quilt. I really need that blade saver. Great video for a newbie. 🥰❤

Thanks for videos of these quilts using 2.5 inch strips. Your quilt is beautiful. I don't have nearly as many strips as you, but last year I organized the ones that I have by color so hopefully I can make one of the quilts in your series using some of them.

That scrappy quilt was so beautiful! Would you ever consider sending your leftover scraps (15:49) to your fans? I have been wanting to grow my scrap stash and would be interested!
