Simple Four Patch Block Quilt using 2 1/2 inch STRIPS! 9th in our series to use leftover strips!

- Ninth project in a series using 2 1/2 inch strips to make scrappy quilts! This pattern was designed for a jelly roll but leftover 2 1/2 inch strips will work just as easily!
This pattern does call for two additional fabric for the background and cornerstones. I highly recommend one fabric for the background setting/border fabric and one fabric for the cornerstones to match the main strip color you pick. Look for a tone on tone or small volume print to let the strips be the star of the quilt. The pattern calls for 2 1/2 yards of the background setting and border fabric and a fat eighth of the cornerstone fabric. The finished size of the quilt was 67 x 67" This pattern is easy to enlarge or make smaller! I do mention some alternate color way ideas in the video.
Here is the link to the pattern used in the video, "Quadrangle" by Moda. This pattern is one of the many Project Jelly Roll patterns they have available online for free!

Stay to the end to see finished quilt which includes the pieced binding and see what the backing is!
There is also another update on the 2 1/2 inch scrap bucket situation!
I've challenged myself to do a new project each month using only 2 1/2 inch strips from my scrap buckets. I have always saved leftover strips from projects and cut up small leftover fabric from yardage into 2 1/2 inch strips and put them in a bucket for some "future" project . The future is now! It is time to tame the scrap bucket and use up these strips. I'll always have a scrap bucket of strips because I'm constantly adding to it but I want to get it down to just ONE bucket instead of three...make that seven after the "GREAT SORTING"! This series will last until I'm down to one bucket. Let's be honest, it will take at least 2 years to use up enough strips to make a difference! So join me on this project adventure to use up fabric scraps!
If you don't have leftover strips from other projects to make scrappy quilts, cut up fabrics in your stash into 2 1/2" strips to make the project. No stash of fabric? Head to your local quilt shop and buy a jelly roll or some very pretty fabric to cut into strips! Shop owners are more than happy to help you find the perfect fabric, don't be shy, ask for help if you need it!
Consider joining our Facebook group called "The Quilted Forest Friends". This is the only place you'll have access to exclusive free quilt patterns used in some of our other video projects. It's also lots of fun for members to share their project updates. Here's a link to the group:

Your fabric cutting is super efficient. You are a great teacher. And fun to watch. Thank you.😊
Thank you so much!
I totally agree. Your shortcuts are very helpful.
Thank you for another fabulous 2 1/2" strips project. Love the comment about a galloping horse; we are all too hard on ourselves - it's a hobby!
Really pretty quilt. Your voice is very calm and soothing. Thanks for no music!
I love this series. It’s so relaxing to watch you sew. Keep them coming!
Thank you! Will do!
Your tips add so much extra value to your tutorials. Thank you for this series. I love it.
Really enjoying your videos! No frills, no excessive side chatter, just great tips, tricks, clear instructions, and beautiful quilts 😊
OMG, I have been hanging out for this series update. Thank you!
Hope you enjoy!
These 2-1/2 strip videos are my favorite. Love this pattern. Thank you for sharing!!
In ride the galloping horse frequently. I quilt for enjoyment and try not to stress about some things. Thank you for all the tutorials.❤️
My 1st quilt was completely free form , I didn't measure any of my squares or trim them, just made them and sewed rows, I used a twin sheet as a self binding back. and only had 1 dart in the quilt when I was done. Then I watched youtube and learned making each square the same size and trimming and squaring up. Love it as it's a memory quilt and continues my grandmother's quilting tradition.
Love, love, love this series!
Your tutorials are fantastic, you are very clear on each step, and your voice is so calming. Thank you !
Thank you so much for this series. Love it.
So pretty and I really love the scrappy binding! Such a good way to use up leftover fabrics!
Thanks so much! 😊
My favorite quilt so far with the strips! Thank you for the videos, they are great!

I look forward to each one of your 2 1/2” strips series. You have wonderful ideas and great tips. Thank you so much.
Love the idea of marking the length you need w/ painters tape, never thought of that… Thanks
Great cutting and assembly tips! Thanks!
I truly love your tutorials especially in this series.
Thank you so much!
Very helpful tips. Thank you 💫
You're so welcome!
Another beauty! I am really enjoying this series!
I love these scrap tutorials. Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome!
Yes! I have drawers upon drawers of scraps! But this has some very small pieces
Beautiful quilt! Thank you for another great scrap busting pattern. I think I will also use this method modified to a 3 x 3 grid to use up my ever-growing stack of 5” squares, maybe with 2” sashing. I make many grandkids’ quilts and foster quilts and cut leftovers into 2.5” strips and 5” squares. The scraps then become more grandchild and foster quilts. 😅. So many scraps!!! Looking forward to trying this one out.
Love this series, makes me want to cut my fabric into strips
What a delight to watch how this beautiful quilt came together. I'm trying to work through my scraps also, and make one scrappy quilt a month this year.❤
Wonderful!
Very impressive goal 🍄🍄
Once again, this one is great! I especially like the way the darks and lights come together, making a really interesting and lovely quilt! Well done!
Spectacular!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Thank you so much for sharing.
I admire people who can work on the floor. I am too old for that now.
Yay! So fun and so easy to change the size if you have more (or less - haha) scraps. Love it!
This is the kind of scrappy quilt I like. It’s beautiful!
I like the tip about the galloping horse!!
You make this look so easy❤. Thank you for sharing.
So love all your ideas for 2 1/2 strips❤❤❤❤
I made this quilt last year and I love it

this is beautiful in its symplicity----thank you for your tutoring!!!
Love this project! The finished look is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much!
Loved this one, it came out great ❤
All quilts in this series look gorgeous.
I love how the greens are all different, while the quilt just reads as green. Very pretty!
I like to put pieced sashing strips around the outside of the quilt before adding a border.
I love it. So simple, yet so pretty
Thank you! 😊
If you don't snip he first column apart, you can web piece each block, keeping it all together, nothing out of place. Then turn all blocks and sew across remaining seams.
Love the tape on the mat!!! Brilliant 🥰. I saw a tip on another channel (MSQC) to stack the blocks you are going to sew…as in, you have ten of the same blocks to sew, stack them next to your machine and sew them up assembly style which also allows you to double check design placement.
Really enjoyed this one. It looks difficult but it's not. Just 4 patches and sashing. Thanks !!!!
I am currently making a quilt for a young friend using left over pink and purple jelly rolls. This is a perfect how-to! thank you!
Wonderful!
This is such a lovely quilt. I think I will be making it before too long. Thanks.
I can’t believe such a beautiful quilt was made from just scraps! Green is my favorite colour ❤❤ I love that I’m not the only one that uses the floor for my “design wall” ! 😂
I just found your channel and I like what I am seeing! Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you!
Love your tutorials. Thank you for the video 😊
I love it! ❤ I needed to hear the "galloping horse " rule today as I finish my lasted 3.5 inch strip quilt!!❤
Love the idea of using the painters tape. Thank you for a great tutorial.
This was a great tutorial. Thank you ❤
I Love it! Your voice is pleasant and soothing Too! I really enjoy watching your videos!
Love this. My husband surprised me with my first jelly roll, Christmas of last year and I've been searching ever since for a pattern to use it with and I think this is perfect. Its a beautiful Moda Bali Pop fabric in peaches and blues and I'm going to make a throw for us to snuggle under this winter. Perfect. thank you so much.
Love the blue painter tape tip for quick easy measurements . Love your videos
I love to watch you work, I can tell you have done this awhile. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. I look forward to your vids!
Thank you very much!
I like to use the center of the mat too. Love the tip of the blue painters tape. I use the blue painters tape for several things for sewing. Never thought of this usage
Thank you for showing your backwards cutting from above. Fons and Porter used to talk about that on their show but I never quite got it. Now that I see you do it, it seems much faster!
This is a beautiful quilt! I’m going to have to try it
❤beautiful and such good instructions 😊
Thank you for sharing this pattern. I might just need to sew up a few strips! 😊
You are incredibly organized in your cutting and piecing! Very pretty!
Hi Shelley, I also love this tutorial. I made a quilt out of the "block of the month" from December 2022. Please keep it up. I am from the Philadelphia/Vally Forge area in PA. I hope to come out and join you guys at one of your retreats. It looks like a lot of fun. My favorite thing is to use/reuse "discarded fabric." It's like getting a quilt for free. My husband has an Aunt who lives in the Davenport IW area- I may have to drive the 4hrs to the retreat after a visit with her. Have a great day.
Enjoyed watching you sew. I may try this one; it looks very good.
I love all your ideas saving time as you go. You are on spot and to the point. Thank you
"As Quilters...."
Please believe this, this is a UNIVERSAL symptom for EVERY type of crafter, builder, artist or artisan.
Fabrege probably looked at his eggs and said "WHY did I use THOSE stones?"
Another great finish! I appreciate you reinforcing good habits, too. I live in the other "I" state- Idaho- but wish I lived closer to the shop! I love the green and cream- it is super restful. Looking forward to the next vid. Thank you.
Great tutorial. Love your tips
Love this quilt pattern. Scrap busting inspiration for sure!
I really love the way you laid this out. I would have spread the same colors more apart but I think your way was much better. I will definately be trying this one.!!!
Wow! So very nice! God bless, from Baudette Minnesota ❤
Love your tutorials ! And I love the free part. Buying a pattern is not an option for me these days!! Thank God for my fabrics I already have!!
Love this quilt method. You always give such great explanations. I will download this pattern, you’ve inspired me to make a quilt of valor with all my patriotic fabric. This is my year of finishing up those darn WIPs.

Love & appreciate your words of wisdom. The galloping horse & the scrap pile would be better is I did not add to it each week.
