    Hi, good to see you back. I’ve just had my 6 year alcohol free anniversary. It’s difficult in the early days, and just when you think you are doing well with it, it will blindside you and take you by surprise. If I could give you some tips, they would be.
    1. In running, you have to get through each mile. With not drinking you just have to get through each day, some are easy, some are very tough. It doesn’t matter though, you just get through that day without drinking.
    2. Take out the ringleader. If your going out with mates, get in touch with the mate who’s mostly likely going to want you to drink and tell them your not drinking, you going a year alcohol free and tell them you’d really like their support. That way you’ve told them before you meet up, rather than in the boozer when they hand you a pint.
    3. Have a plan. If you know which pub / restaurant your going to you can look up on line what they serve. Make a plan a, plan b and plan c. So for me, it will be an alcohol free beer in a pint glass topped up with lemonade. If that’s not possible, Diet Coke, if that’s not possible, a J2O.
    4. Visualize it. Once you have took out the ringleader, and got your plan a,b and c, walk it through mentally, replay it over and over you going into the pub, going to the bar and ordering an alcohol free drink. It will be so much easier in reality if you do this.
    5. Treat yourself. Plan a long run the day after. Normally you would have been hungover and not able to run the following day, this time you will be fresh and energised. Make the most of it and go out for a big run.
    6. Don’t try to change anything else. Giving up alcohol is very difficult, if it was easy, everyone would do it. The benefits aren’t always obvious, but look for better skin complexion, better sleep, better mood, less irritability, better concentration and decision making.
    Good luck 👍

      Billy, that’s brilliant advice mate, thank you very much!
      I’ve told most of my usual drinking buddies already and they’re wondering why but will be supportive hopefully on the evenings out together. I’m really looking forward to be able to get the long runs in every Sunday from now. Trust me, my hangovers are just awful and I don’t know why I’ve waited this long, maybe because I’ve had some great times on Saturday nights but… it’s time for a change.
      Thanks for taking the time to give advice and good for you for committing to it years ago!

      I’m at a year not drinking now and I totally agree with all that advice. I feel and look so much healthier now. It’s weird but it’s a relief to not have to drink alcohol now! No more feeing like crap, regretting things, fearing things I might’ve done….the list goes on and on.

      @@mikewoods7167 well done on going a year alcohol free, that’s a great achievement. I know what you mean about the lack of anxiety after a night out, worrying about what you said, if you text someone you shouldn’t have etc etc. the list of problems that disappears is almost endless.

    Stevo, I hope you're keeping well man!
    I stopped drinking myself about 5/6 years ago... thought F%*k-IT, I am done, which to be honest it hit my friends the hardest as they knew they wouldn't see me as much anymore, which was shit for us all but I committed more to meeting up with them for lunches and walks etc - things we couldn't do or suggest in our 20s as our friends would laugh at us, giving up the beer for a walk -no chance- haha but now we're 40, we can do these things...
    I still get people who are mind blown when I say I don't drink, or even try to buy me a drink but I just be straight and say, nope I am done, it's for health reasons and I do a lot of sport. Stay strong man, you can do it ;)
    Also your point on your MAF running regarding pace slowing up compared to before and the heart rate going up too, I am getting that too but also believe if I/we put the work in, we'll get back to where we were at before.

      Hey mate, yes I’m all good and hope you’re well! Well done for going alcohol free for that long. I feel I’m at the same point as you. I’m gonna steal that saying, I’m really into my running this year and don’t want to hamper any progress. They all know I love running so will understand, especially with my first ultra coming up! They’re all good friends who are more likely to wind me up about it rather than give me a hard time. Best of luck getting out of the MAF slump, let’s get it going well again! Cheers for writing and all the best.

    One more thing, it's always a good idea to self improve in anyway you can. It's just like running. You just put one foot in front of the other.
    Praying for your success.

      Thanks for the advice, William. Yes drunk people are annoying, it’s easier when you’re part of it haha. It will be totally worth and I’m looking forward to seeing how my running improves with consistent training and no hangovers. Well done on quitting caffeine, that’s also a great life improvement move, in my opinion. All the best with it!

    Hey Stevo, thanks for the mention.
    Good luck with going alcohol free. I’m 4 years deep now, stay strong and just do you, it gets easier with time.
    It’ll take a while to get your head around it, but you can still go out and socialise (drive home and get up early for your training)
    There’s so many benefits you’ll see them soon 💪🏼

      @@StevoRuns no worries at all mate, I think we need to change the stigma around drinking, and challenge ourselves to be the best we can be.
      Im sure your strong minded enough to see it thru, put it this way you won’t ever wake up fresh and think I wish I’d had a drink last night.
      I only had it in mind to do Dry January in 2020 and the rest is history….It changed my life and my whole perspective about looking after myself.

    Hey Stevo ,watching your new video RUclips from USA . On day 5 of no caffeine.
    Heard on your video your quitting drinking for a year. I haven't had a drink in 19 years. One thing you will notice if you hang out with with friends who are drinking. Their personality changes within 1 hour after they start drinking.
    You might not think the same things are funny among other things. I had to look for other things that are fun to do.

  • @ChrisLeggUK
    @ChrisLeggUK 7 месяцев назад +1

    I stopped drinking at the end of 2020. I wouldn't say I am completely tee total, at special occasions I will have a glass of prosecco/champagne with everyone else for a toast, on a very very rare occasion I might have a normal beer, but I doubt I have more than 5 or 6 alcoholic drinks a year and never more than 1 in a single evening. It's been awesome, no hangovers, no feeling 'dusty' the following morning, never having to think twice about if I am ok to drive etc. I find most people aren't an issue, at first I would make an excuse along the lines of "I'm driving" or "I'm on meds and can't drink" but I don't bother anymore and it's only very rarely I get someone make comment. The best thing I have found is the increasing amount of choice in non-alcoholic beers available. There are still places where I get stuck with a Heineken Zero but I have found more and more places there is a range of drinks available. It's much nicer to be able to have a 'pint' than to be stuck on coke or lemonade all evening when down the pub with friends.

    • @StevoRuns
      @StevoRuns  7 месяцев назад

      Fair play to you Chris! I didn’t even realise there was alcohol free beers in the pubs, I’ve never thought to look. I like the sound of it though and will definitely sample a few… avoiding the Heineken though 😂. Cheers for the advice mate

    Wondered where you’d gone! I’ll be 5 years without a drop come this April. I only meant to stop for a year originally but then pandemic struck and I didn’t want to drink at home so it just stuck. I don’t really miss it (and never actually liked beer if I’m honest) but I do enjoy the better sleep, better digestive health, exercise without ill effects and generally better health. These days I think people are very accepting of it - I’d just say in advance. If your friends just go out to socialise rather than get drunk I think you’ll be in good company.
    I also took your example on caffeine free and I’m something like 18 months off caffeine now. Again, I don’t really miss it but do like more consistent energy levels and slightly better sleep. Good luck with your training this year mate.

    • @StevoRuns

      Hey Dom, I’m still going haha. 5 years without a drop is awesome mate, good for you. I’m not really keen on the taste of beer either, I wonder why I drink it sometimes. I look forward to seeing if I get those benefits you had. I look like crap half the time so if I can look fresher I’ll never look back!
      Well done on keeping caffeine free, that’s another hard one conquered for you there, I hope I can do the same. All the best for your training too, hopefully you can get yourself into a few races. Cheers

    18 months off the sauce for me, don't miss it and feel great. Guinness 0.0 and Heineken 0.0 were my drinks this last new years eve. Alcohol really messes with your sleep patterns. Alcohol abuse seems to have got a lot worse in the UK and is a massive drain on the NHS. Have a look at some Andrew Huberman videos regarding Alcohol on here. Good luck Stevo. You've got this.

    • @StevoRuns

      18 months is great, good for you. It can be done then and everyone that has done it seems to be happier. My sleep isn’t great anyway and drink just throws me off even more, it takes some days to feel better again. Thanks for the Huberman shout, I’ll go and subscribe now. Cheers

    Good move, stopping the drink mate. I only drink once or twice a month, and never more than a few. It always messes with my sleep, and like you say, it leads to a crappy diet afterwards.

    Hey Steve, Abingdon... I thought the issue there was being very undertrained?

    • @StevoRuns
      @StevoRuns  7 месяцев назад

      Hi John, yes it was that I was undertrained in Abingdon as to why I struggled, but it was more of my muscles not coping than my lungs as such because I wasn’t able to get long runs in with my ankle issues. Hopefully the strength work can fix some of that pain later in the races. My legs have hurt on all 3 marathons so far which I know is part of the package but I’m trying to fix that a bit. Whether it works or not we shall see. Have you any plans for this year?
