Please let me know your experiences with stopping alcohol. What benefits did you see?

  • @bookreadingbilly8329

Well done on getting 5 months alcohol free. I’m 6.5 years in and each time I was approaching a milestone in the early days I thought ‘I’ll have a drink when I get to that point’, but I never did. The reason? I didn’t want the feeling of disappointment and shame.
Being alcohol free gives you a sense of pride and accomplishment that you might not notice until you really drill down into your feelings.
There will no doubt a look of pride in the face of your loved ones as well if you look carefully enough.
Ultimately, there’s no benefits to drinking. We’ve been there, done it and had the hangovers.
We are some of the lucky few who have been able to step away from it, but are always aware that one false step could take us right back down again.

This is a great comment, Billy. 6.5 years is great! My wife and family all seem happy with it and it actually feels sustainable this time. Let’s see how this summer works out, but I have a good feeling about it. Thank you

Really positive stuff Stevo mate, your doing really well.
Heard you say you don’t feel much physical difference, but you’ve definitely improved your will power and mental strength by making smart choices and not giving in to temptation 👏🏼

You're passing all of the tests mate... except for counting months lol. Great to hear that your friends are being supportive. That's a huge plus. Stick with it, legend 💪💪

You sound like me mate, I think it’s a thing us British did back then just living for the weekend and getting hammered. I quit 5 years ago now mainly because I found when I got mid 30s I found I couldn’t cope with the hangovers anymore, used to be a good fry up and a few paracetamol and I was good to go, now hangovers and anxiety shit mood would drag on for days so I quit. My weekend mornings are now reserved for running, I’m now in bed early sat nights then out 5/6am for my Sunday my long run and it’s brought me more joy than getting hammered ever did. Good luck mate 👍

I think you’re right mate and we do sound similar. Hangovers were bad but have got worse like you mentioned, the kids see it now which is not nice and I’m dead until mid afternoon. It’s just not worth it anymore and I’m gonna carry it on now. Good for you for doing it too 👍🏼

Nice one getting off the booze Steve. I’ve been off it myself for 18 months. Something similar to you with binge drinking. Just decided to knock it on the head.
I was out on the same trails as you on Saturday. Running the Jurassic Coast 100km. Following those pink arrows 😃 All the best with the rest of your training for RTTK!

How did I miss this on strava on Saturday? Very well done mate and a brilliant time. That trail ultra looks great. I was annoyed with the shingle beach on my 8 miler 😂 that must have been a killer that late on in the race!

Thanks! Had a weekend in Weymouth and I happened to find a coastal trail where an ultra was on the day before called Jurassic coast. Was a stunning run!

I effectively stopped drinking on 1st Jan 2021. It was relatively difficult at first but over time got easier. Now I can't say I miss it at all. I'm not totally teetotal, I'll have a glass of fizz to join in a cheers at a celebration, but I'll only have the one and I reckon that happens maybe 2 or 3 times a year. I'm perfectly happy with a non alcoholic beer, it means I can sit and have a pint with mates, I actually don't really like the taste of normal beer anymore. The benefits, in my opinion, are well worth it. I never have hangovers or that hazy feeling on a morning, getting to and from places is great as I can drive and don't have to bother with cabs etc, I sleep better and I generally feel better in myself.
Glad it's going well for you Stevo!

Cheers Chris and good for you for doing it too for these last few years. I’ll probably be like that too as I’m not in fear of going fully back to how I was, so a toast drink etc would be quite nice here and there. I definitely love Sundays more now!

Well done, mate. I quit on Christmas Eve 2018 and it was the best decision I ever made. It doesn't solve everything, but it makes life much less complicated. It's not even a thing for me now in social situations, but it certainly wasn't easy at the start. The idea of a hangover with small humans at home just sounds horrendous! Embrace being a boring old man!!!

Thank you! Good for you for stopping for so long. Yes that’s true, I’m a waste of space on a Sunday morning and my kids know it, I’ve enjoyed every Sunday since. Cheers

Training has been going really well for me. Then last Friday I went out and had way to many drinks which ruined my Saturday, I couldn't run and my sund8 run suffered too.

Glad to hear trainings going well! A heavy night throws you right off temporarily doesn’t it. My HRV and everything is knackered for a 2-3 days. All good fun at the time though ayy
