Bubba Smith (Hightower) had seriously ruined his knees playing professionally, hence why he just walked through the training and never ran. It added to the intimidation of his character. The creators decided early on that it was meant to be a fun film, with only slap-stick violence and no blood or actual serious injury. It's a classic comedy that far, far exceeded the expectations of the filmmakers, and it's one of my favorite films growing up.
He got them Danny Glover knees!
After he passed away, Bubba's family auctioned off some of his memorabilia. I bid. but was too naive in the ways of online auctions and missed out. When he played at MSU, the crowd used to chant, "Kill Bubba Kill".
When I was in college in the late eighties, there was a campus cop who looked kinda like Bubba Smith (maybe not quite that bit, but still a big dude). I once heard someone refer to him as Hightower and I knew exactly who he was talking about. I think everyone else in the room did too. "Yeah, he does look like that guy!"
What did he play professionally?
@@eddied.3426 Football. NFL.
Don't move dirtbag was the biggest moment in the theater. Place just busted out. 😂
I got to meet G W Bailey twice. My friend attended the same church and was good friends with his son Martin. The first time I met him we had stopped by his to pick up Martin, on our way to see Iron Maiden. When we walked into the house GW was sitting on a Lazy-Boy Recliner and before Martin could introduce us he turned to us and said, (LOUDLY-in his gravely voice) " NO!!!!! My head did NOT go up the horse's ass!'. The second time we stopped by pick up Martin, We were in the living and GW walked out of the kitchen and handed us sodes. When I said thank you. He said, "I'm not being generous! I'm trying to fill you little bastards up so you have less room for beer!".
When the dude spun around with the shotgun everyone hit the deck except for Tackleberry because he knew he didn’t eject a spent shell and load a new one thus not causing any danger.
It's the little details that makes the difference between a good movie and a great movie 🥲
This was exactly what I was looking for!
"Go on, tell him what he did..."
Lasard is one of my Police Academy favorites. The way he delivers his lines is so wonderful.
I love the way he mixes up his facts , like when he said the training was 24 weeks .
@@scooby1992 And then he goes on to say, “I never forget a number.” 😁
Your laughter is insanely funny and contagious! Please watch the other Police Academy movies!
RIP to David Graf (Tackleberry) and Bubba Smith (you guys know him).
J: *thinks the riot in the finale is in Detroit*
Me, a Canadian (living in Windsor, directly across from Detroit): *knowing damn well it's just Toronto*
😂
I think we can all agree on this that Michael Winslow is just a treasure, no matter what he plays in. Your reaction to bubba smith doing anything was priceless
You are truly the kind of person we all need as a close friend. I've enjoyed coming to this channel SO much since I came across it a while ago. It's literally your personality that makes this channel. It doesn't matter what you're watching, I feel amazing after finishing one of your videos. You're one of the most sincere, honest and genuine people on here. That type of neighbor I wish I had I could check in on once in a while. Can't wait for the next one :)
I agree, EOM always puts me in a better mood when I watch his videos.
@@tdeo2141 agreed.
Agreed. The dude is an awesome and amazing human being. Excellent and fun reactions and they always cheer me up and make me laugh. ❤
Perfect timing for this video. Shout Factory recently announced they're prepping a Blu-ray set of all 7 "Police Academy" movies for release this November 2023.
Police academy 3 is probably my favorite lol.
Hot take but Police Academy 4 was my favorite when I was younger.
Police Academy 4 is my favourite too, closely followed by this, and 6.
Nice!!
I wonder if they will release a “Mahoney edition” that includes the first 4?
I got off the ride after I didn’t enjoy 5 very much and later saw a few minutes of Mission to Moscow and was done. It just wasn’t the same.
Bubba Smith (High Tower) is the big guy you were asking about. He played pro football for a few years and is probably best known for his Lite Beer commercials with the late Dick Butkus in the 1970's. If you've never seen them they are classics you should check them out.
RIP Dick Butkus
He’ll always be “Spare Tire” Dixon to me😉
You're so naturally funny. I'm so happy I found your channel.
That's the most I've ever seen you LAUGHING in your reaction videos and your laughing was contagious because I was laughing my butt off! Keep up the great work! :)
The podium scene is still one of the funniest scenes of all time imo.
Yep. George Gaynes absolutely nails it.
" Oh my God , you wouldnt believe it " ! Great acting .
And the last scene... when he just looks away... Perfect! Just perfect!
I haven’t heard you laugh this hard since you reacted to Tropic Thunder!
I can't remember the last time I saw JL laugh this much, but it was the best thing ever!! 🤣🤣 I was dying watching this reaction. Thanks for laugh 👏🏻👏🏻
The big guy ( Hightower ) is Bubba Smith...He played pro football for the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers...He later made Miller lite beer commercials with former pro football player Dick Butkus and appeared in movies and TV shows.
He was with the former Baltimore Colts when they won Super Bowl 5.
As a kid I was a big Bubba Smith fan and he helped his team beat my Cowboys...I stayed mad at him for years.@@victorhernandez8723
Podium scene always gets me. With that said, thank you for your contagious laughter. I also have a headache now!! 😂😂
The SPEECH scene is probably the funniest movie scene ever 😂😂😂😂
Great reaction, great movie. Kim Cattrall and G.W. Bailey (a.k.a. Harris) also appear in one of my favorite comedies from the 80’s, Mannequin.
Kim Cattrall
@@bolasblancas420 thx
Loved her as 'Lassie' in Porky's too .
The guy in the car that Hightower rammed was the director.
I was playing "police Academy" when I went to kindergarten. We knew all the charachter's and could quote entire scenes from this film.
I have no Idea how this is even possible, considering I was three years old when this movie came out, and I'm from Sweden.
There was no cable TV yet, and there was no VHS yet.
I know, it doesn't add up.
That damn speech scene kills me every time
I knew you’d love this one. The next three are definitely worth watching. 5 and six are still pretty good. At some point soon, you need go watch Porky’s. I think your ready. One of the funniest movies ever made. when I saw Porky’s in the theater, the audience was laughing so hard, we couldn’t even hear the dialogue in several parts. Kim Cattral is in it, too. In fact, I think it was her first movie.
"Please, Ms. Ballbricker. Can we call it a tallywacker?" - Funniest scene in cinema history!
Porky's was one of my favorites growing up
Mahoney's cop buddy with the magnificent mustache was the chauffeur in Arther from 1981, he has a lot more lines.
Yep… spade. There’s a scene in blazing saddles where Jim tells sheriff Bart that he received a note addressed to “deputy spade”… now you know what that means.
I had a major appliance quit on me, so I needed to hear J's laugh today. 🙂 thanks J and Blank!
Well this was a good reaction for that. Hope things get better.
I can relate. I replaced my refrigerator last week. Sending good vibes your way, cause dealing with that ain’t fun!
The man Hightower rear-ended was the director. The guy who was supposed to be in the front car was too drunk for the 2 am shooting.
I knew what was coming with the podium scene and was just waiting for Jay's reaction. Didn't disappoint, I thought he was about to have a stroke. Love this movie. Great reaction
Gets me everytime just thinking about walking up on some huge MF driving from the backseat 😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
The man who walked back to the car and then turned back around was the director, Hugh Wilson.
This channel makes me feel better on my worst days. 😊
I grew up with these movies in the 80's, but haven't seen them in decades! The humor is even better than they were as a kid now that I get the adult humor better!
I forgot how funny the podium scene was 😂 I was in tears laughing 😂😂
Damn, I always forget how f**king funny this movie is. 🤣🤣🤣
A veritable classic of 80s comedy, a screenshot of the times, a blast from the past made even better as usual by J's commentary. Thanks for the laughs.
Every time Lassard says how long the training course lasts, he gives a different number.
George Gaynes is a treasure in these
I’ve seen almost the whole series. Oh, it also launched a cartoon series and a live action tv show. Action figures.
I'm still advocating for a new round of these movies. The hook being, bring back all the surviving stars to the academy. They'll have to train the new recruits, who happen to be the children of Hightower, Tackleberry, and anyone else who've passed away.
I like that idea! Someone better start working on the script…
19:15- the Blue Oyster is a running joke in several of the police academy movies; and it's ALWAYS that funny when it happens😂
I absolutely love Police Academy. I had a big crush on Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg). He was in so many movies in the 80s and 90s.
God bless you for doing Police Academy! October is horror movie month for most reaction channels.
I know… I’m not into horror so it’s definitely refreshing.
The whole series . . . well, it has its ups and downs, but it's worth checking out. Even if some of the jokes haven't aged very well. It's a time capsule of a series, honestly. And that main theme has *no* reason to be as awesome as it is.
I think it was good until Steve Gutenberg (Mahoney) left the series.
I'd say the first 4 movies are good to decent. 3 is my favorite by far though. But after 5 is just goes downhill fast. Like, real fast. Bobcat Gothwait being added to the cast in 3 and a main role in 4 and on, perfect. Citizens on Patrol baby!
@@LuisOrtiz-xo5kcagreed. No4 is the last decent one
@LordLOC "I call, I call"
"Cop"
"Cop.........."
"citizens on patrol"
"citizens on patrol"
"CITIZENS ON PATROL!!!!"
@@LordLOC5 wasn't very good but 6 was an improvement.
These movies were some of my favorites as a kid. I'm glad people can discover and enjoy them still.
Police academy is one of my all time favourite childhood movies, the rest of the movies are just as nostalgic and stand as classics in their own right.
So happy you reacted to this, could you please react to “Dog Soldiers” (2002) with it being Halloween season soon?
Same for me, Police acadamy and Revenge of the nerds :)
I knew Jay would LOVE this movie! It's fantastic! So dang good.
Gotta watch Three Men and a Baby with Steve Guttenberg, Ted Danson and Tom Selleck. And Private Benjamin with Goldie Hawn.
Look Who's Talking. Just for the opening womb scene.
@@Deathbird_Mitch good one!
I honestly don't think I've heard you crack up this much in any other reaction. This was awesome. I needed the laugh.
I literally didn’t watch a movie reaction, I just watched over 40 minutes of pure genuine laughter. This literally made my night and my morning, as I watch for the second time. Thanks for this great reaction as always JL and Blank.
My mom took us to go see this movie.
One of the greatest endings ever.
Bro, your dog gotta be like, "I LOVE this human, but who the #*&! Is he talking to ?"
I play Xbox they use to it lol
@@EOMReacts
To specify, I was mostly driven to post this comment while watching the dog watch you talk to us, before the movie reaction.
Love your content.
Always glad to be a member of the team.
@@EOMReactsmy favorite is when Drogo comes to bark at you, but the mic doesn't catch it. It looks like someone dubbed it with a human that's whispering "UFF UFF"
Have to watch #2 also!!
The Blue Oyster Bar dancers were experienced ballroom dancers, so they were professional dancers in those roles
Huckleberry is the only one that doesn’t flinch when the guy points the shotgun because he knows there no way the shotgun won’t fire because it isn’t cocked.
Tackleberry. Spell check can be a pain.
I am 4:15 in to this And I bet Jay's gonna be laughing hard all the way through this movie.
The scene with the hooker in the podium is amongst the funniest in any movie ever.
In the late 1920s during the Harlem Renaissance, "spade" began to evolve into code for a black person.
"As black as a spade" means something is blacker than black like the Spade on a playing card and is not considered a racial slur. The same goes for "call a spade a spade" refering to the gardening tool.
Omg i laughed so hard i got tears. During the "speech" i could not hold back the tears
I loved the " look away moment ".😂
It truly warms my heart to see someone near peeing themselves laughing at movies I loved so much when I was a kid.
This made my night! You deserve all the joy and laughter. I was lucky to find your channel, at this time a year ago.Thank you for a truly amazing year !!👍🙏
What a joy it is to see you just watch movies like this with an almost child like acceptance of just taking it for what it is refreshing in this age of taking life too seriously. You are a beautiful human being.
Classic movie. Hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
The look Lassard gave at the end explained it ALL ! 🤪
Best part of this whole movie: 20:45 everyone ducks except the gun nut, he knows it can't fire until you pump it again
Commandant Lassard remains my favorite PA character til this day 😂
When a dog humps your leg you throw a solid punch into their nose. They soon learn to quit that.
You would volunteer to get thrown and land on the mat Jay.?? This WE GOT TO SEE👀👀
I think you broke your record for your longest laugh at the Speaker Stand when Mahoney looks out.👌
I'm a little sad that we didn't get to see Barbara flipped over into the river/lake in the photo booth at the beginning by the bullies and then getting revenge near the end, I loved his character arc. There are so many excellent characters in this movie and later movies even callback to scenes in this. J, excellent reactions as always, I can't wait for you to react to the sequels. God bless you guys with excellence!
Grew up on these movies and had them on tape. I would still watch any of them and no matter how many times you see them you still laugh.
I'm here for the Lassard presentation.
Out of everybody that I've seen react to this movie? Everybody laughs at the podium scene. And it makes everyone laugh to the point that their head hurt.😂😂😂
One of the greatest movie theme intros ever that wasn't written by John Williams
Great reaction, man, your laugh is super contagious. You're gonna love Police Academy 2.
Luv'd when he was teaching Hightower to drive again...dude walks up on them like he gonna whoop some a$$.
Dad used to drive a Fiat...with the sun roof open ...when cops stopped him he would straighten up and stick his head outta the sun roof ... 6'5"
My Dad was the BEST!!!
The gentleman who played Captain Reed (the brotha with the mustache) is the late great actor/producer/writer Ted Ross.
I absolutely love the first 5 in the series.... this react had me rolling, i needed this!!
33:58 we Finally got the Detroit reference.. It's like where is Waldo each episode of his
Man i love this movie i watchted it many many times as a kid and laughed always my ass off ahhh the good ol days
Thank you. I got a full laugh tonight and didn't realize how much I needed it. 😂😂❤❤❤❤
I saw something kind of sad a few months ago ... Motormouth Jones was on some game show about talent or something. They were acting like, "oh you make pretty cool sounds". (I don't have cable, it was in a hotel... not sure what I was watching). All I could think about is how famous he was in the 80s. He doesn't have to prove himself to anyone. I love everything about this series. Except Mission to Moscow. I never bothered to buy that last movie on my Prime account. But Hell, I even loved the one where they went to Miami. Good stuff!
“We’ll played sir, we’ll played”…. Lmao 😆🤣😂
29:36 That man made a business decision.😂😂😂
That was great!
I had a shit day at work today and I needed to laugh.
Thanks for making me smile and laugh after a rough day.
Mahoney and the male instructor were both in Short Circuit. Never saw them in anything else.
We were all overcome with emotion over this one.
George Gaynes, who played cmd Lassard passed away at the age of 94.
The "podium gal" was a porn actress before that.
Leslie Easterbrook (sgt Debbie Callahan) also played in Private Resort - Johnny Depp's first leading role.
Had a smile on my face the whole reaction, with JL genuinely cracking up, 'til the very end, when he listed the only comedies on the channel he thought were "weak:" "Semi-Pro, Kindergarten Cop, Kung Fu Hustle..." *needle scratch* *Hanna-Barbera quadruple take* WhaWhaWhaa? Ran to his Kung Fu Hustle reaction, immediately heard the stereotypically-accented English dub, and thought, 'Dang, that's what happens when you don't watch a movie in its original language, you miss the joy of one of the highest-acclaimed international comedies of all time.' I hope JL will give Shaolin Soccer (Stephen Chow's excellent comedy before KFH) a chance in the original Cantonese {Not Mandarin} track. 😄
Congrats on 50K, fam! Well done.
Love your laugh! Haha always entertaining in these comedy reviews.
Always great content!
Jay, I have watched enough of your videos to know with 100% certainty that you would find the Blue Oyster bar scenes as fully as hell. It was great seeing you watch a comedy. 🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂😂😅😅😊
Hugh Wilson gave us such wonderful comedies....WKRP, Blast From the Past, this film and so many more.
tackleberry was ALWAYS my favorite! he's a while different breed!😂😂😂
I'm glad you enjoyed this. I've loved this film since i was 6, i grew up in the 80s when most of this franchise was made. I hope you watch the sequels, in my opinion all but the final one are good. I actually love PA 4 more than this one, and PA 6 is another i really love.
Same here, 80's kid from Southern Maryland!
You said Clue was funny as hell by omission. You can’t take it back! I can’t hear you! Lalalalalalalala …. 😊
This might be the most I've laughed in a long ass time....thank you guys!!!
29:36
At that moment he knew... he fu¢✓©d up...😂😂😂
Saw Police Academy and BAM here I am. Your laughter brings me joy, J. XD ♥
Can you imagine the murder whistle rocking the mutton chops. I can
Epic.
Porky's and revenge of the nerds are great 80's movies
