This is one of the franchises where the sequels are actually worthy... at least parts 2 & 3.

I remember as a kid Bubba Smith (aka Moses Hightower) as one of the earliest football heroes. When he finished college he was the very first draft pick in the NFL that year. On the field he was a terror. When asked about his success as a defensive end he said " I just tackle the whole backfield and throw guys out till I find the one with the ball. They put it in a TV commercial. Off the field he was quiet and goofy, really laid-back. And FYI he really could flip a car like that.

The lawsuit against Dead Kennedys for obscene material in an album, strict censorship of horror films, or the time Bowley and Wilson were arrested for flatulence jokes (and that's just off the top of my head.)
All things that happened in a decade where no one was offended apparently.
These people have always existed and so have these culture war battles, the Internet has just brought them to the forefront.

I learned all sorts of things as a 10 year old boy... My mom took us to Theatres to see this..She had no clue what it was about thought it was some type of comedy spoof ,,, she got more than she bargained for...I'm like mom why is that guy making weird noises on the podium.. my mom just gave me an angry look.. My sister who was in her late teens ended up explaining it to me..Of course as a kid I didnt believe a word she said.. So I actually confronted my father about it..lol He pretty much gave it to me straight.. 😂

Real glad you got around to this... The first three movies are the best of the series, in my opinion. If you can believe it, this movie series actually inspired a kid's cartoon series (the 80s were weird.)
The first time I saw this was back in the early video rental days with family. My dad (an army officer) and my uncle (a cop) were laughing the hardest out of everyone. Especially when it came to Tackleberry, he was their favorite.

He was making a joke about "Bubba" Smith playing in the NFL. He Actually played Professional Football And He Was A Great "DEFENSIVE" Player too. He passed away on August 2011...FACTS! Some Fun Facts for you guys:
Steve Guttenberg (Mahoney) auditioned for this part wearing his father's NYPD uniform shirt
All of the actors in preparation for their roles in this movie actually trained at a real-life Police Academy, Kim Cattrall being pretty proficient on the firing range
The scene where Mahoney was helping Hightower prepare for the driving course, the driver of the he rear-ended was the director of the movie, because the actor who was intended to film the scene was so drunk that he was unable to do that scene
Actress Marion Ramsey(Hooks) actually had worn a fat suit under her clothes, which was intended to get skinny as her character's training had progressed in the follow-up movies and the tone of voice she uses when saying the line "Don't Move, Dirtbag" was closer to her actual speaking voice

Still funny after all these years, why Police Academy is amongst the classics. The sequels well - alas paramount example of a franchise that the jokes were nowhere near as good and they just continued making them for way too many years (2 and 3 are still with a lot of funny sequences but after that rest are inferior)...but the first, is a gem. The thing about the many sequels still is the music - they kept that original theme music through the entire run and that tune alone brings back so much nostalgia and an uplifting piece of movie music.
