- DJI Action 2. Was going modular a huge mistake? We actually LOST a lot of the cool features of the DJI Osmo Action. Is this even as good as the Gopro 10 now? A lot of flaws in this new DJI action cam. I don't see a reason to upgrade over the original action or the Gopro 10. Let's talk about these major flaws. What should have been the best action cam of 2021, ends up super disappointing, 4k 120fps is already boring. We want 480fps.

It was my LAV MIC that died! Not the Gopro adapter, sorry for the bad publicity Gopro! I'll explain it better in an upcoming video. The mic worked fine the first time, then all of a sudden that mic won't work with any camera. RIP Sennheiser ME2.

I never seen someone with so many faults with GoPro cameras. Mine 9 and 10 work fine. Records audio and hardly every crashes. I think the 9 once since I bought it

Dang I should have bought another osmo action when it was 199$. Now at 299$ which is still not a bad deal but shit i missed that one. Maybe all these big time youtubers who got the action two for free will give away their osmo action since they only have glowing things to say about the action two!!

Hello GoPro, here’s a question: my Hero 9’s battery hinge on the body is skewed/crooked, if i snap the battery door on now and close it up it ain’t 100% flush to the body i’d say only 90-95% and this happened straight out of the box when i pulled the door off only once(without force) Is this normal? Is it still within tolerance to be waterproof? can i get a replacement?(ahum!Hero10Hero10!😁)

I ordered one of these yesterday morning directly from DJI and I was surprised when it arrived 24 hours later. I thought that everything shipping from Asia was delayed right now.
It’s because sales bombed and they were overwhelmed with joy when a new order came through!
Dji designed this thing to sell the mods. It was conceived in a boardroom of corporate demons.
The sad part is they sell you in combo packs, camera+extra better or camera+front screen, but no only the camera, so disappointing.
Soon it’ll be completely modular, in that you have to buy the lens, sensor, screen, and charge port separately
@Dino DIY you can get the video off camera via wifi, if they made a charger for only the camera mod and sold both at $299 it would be a great deal. basically a higher res insta360 go 2.

And to make this an actaual usable action cam, so it can be used like any other action cam, you need the battery/screen mod and the waterproof casing. Now its bigger, heavier, less feature rich, AND more expensive!!! DJI really need to get rid of the word "ACTION" from its marketing material, because this is no action cam.

It's funny out of all the famous RUclipsrs that DJI sent this action 2 to, they looked underwhelmed and you could tell there wasn't really an excitement and they were just going through the motions to keep getting free products.
I am sure people will find ways to make it an awesome camera. But when you talk 1:1 replace the osmo action.. yeah i think most rather seen a tech upgrade of that instead of this new form factor.

I feel ya. I once hiked 10 miles (20 round-trip) to a remote lava flow and shot video with my Nikon D800 and a Rode mic only to get home to videos without audio. From that day on I brought 2 backup audio devices. One was the GoPro 2. Its audio was better than nothing.
DJI definitely innovates, but this camera is a fail. The should have released an Action II and then this modular thing as a mark I of a new line. You're a grand into peripherals to not have an SD card in the actual camera body, no waterproofing on the screen, overheating during action in cool environments.... no thanks, DJI. Given that I own thousands of dollars of DJI equipment, it's hard for me to dump on their product like this. If it wasn't marketed as the Action, maybe I would be more forgiving.
I'll be honest, Matti Hapoija and Peter Mckinnon are losing a little credibility with me. The fact that they get these products for free clouds their judgment in my opinion. I think the only channel that I have seen so far be critical and honest is F-Stoppers. Lee did not blow smoke up their ass for clear design failures. I'm sure there are others, but I'm done watching videos on the thing, I have made my buying decision. No.
totally wrong. action 2 at $399 comes with the battery mod that has an sd card slot and a usb c for mic and charging. the main camera module is fully waterproof, not the battery module. you dont really need to buy any extra accessory. f-stoppers critique was silly because he was mainly comparing it to iphone. all action cameras would lose to iphone in image quality, but an action camera is an action camera.

DJI needs to feel some accountability in the loss of sales because of this pathetic attempt at trying to be an Action 2 when it’s a whole different camera that should not even be affiliated with the action format . 1. it comes with an sd card port and its rechargeable, if not how would anyone charge it after first use? you can have the battery mod permanently on the camera mod. youre not forced to have them separate if you don't want to.
2. for argument sake even if the battery mod didnt come with sd card port and we only had to rely on the internal 32gb storage does it make it a non action camera? is the insta360 go 2 a non action camera?. no. theres no fixed criteria of an action camera, dji is innovative, bringing new features. if you dont like changes, then stick to what already works for you.
@@truthseeker6804 the stand alone lens part is not chargeable and does not have an SD card port which means if you want to use the lens part alone, it can only hold 22gb of data and only way to charge it is to attach the second part to the lens module. The lens module is not chargeable as a stand alone unit which makes it very useless if you want to use the lens module alone for lengthy periods. It’s not an action cameras asshole

Just ordered the Pocket 2 after waiting 2 years for the Action 2… is a completely different product line, not an upgrade to my OA1
I like my pocket 2. It could be better but I'm no camera wiz so I'm probably doing it wrong.
best decision. the pocket is a way better camera for vlogging and likely better in low light. i also have the pocket.
My pocket 1 died after getting in water for 2 seconds. Simply dead.

To be fair, Potato jet showed it has an okay quality audio. Not bad. Not the best. Other RUclipsrs did mention the cons and the pro. And I think they showed it used as intended. I don't think they evaluate it to be used as vlogging camera. For different usage you have different pros and cons.

Exactly.. 2 months ago we bought the DJI action, it’s just unbelievable cheap for what you get, quality is there and we preferred it over the GoPro 9. Well after this fail i hope they improve it with the action 3 by using all the goods of the action 1 and just upgrade all the components.
The cinematic irony is that this video is far more entertaining BECAUSE of the audio failure.

I agree 100%. Was hoping for better quality, closer focussing distance and maybe a built in mic Jack. We’ve been waiting so long for the release, was a real let down for me anyway.
Focusing distance without the Macro adapter according to DJI is now 300mm.

the Action 2 is a big disappointment a step backwards in terms of form factor, so sad, was really looking forward to it. Also video in reviews doens't look any better, if not worse than the Hero 10 or even Action 1.
I totally agree on other reviews showing but not mentioning weaknesses at all
its a step forward for fpv drone users. so its subjective. the main problem with this new action 2 is no interchangeable lens cover.
@@truthseeker6804 But only 32gb storage and a tiny battery - unless you attach the extra module. Plus it doesn't have the gyro data for stabilisation software like Realseady, so I don't think it will be that good for FPV
@@tobyr8555 i just saw a video by "Rotor Riot" and it was good for fpv. 32gb honestly isnt bad, all they need to do is allow for transfer of files from the camera to the sdcard in the battery mod. im sure the battery is better than the session. dont quote me on that. lol.
@@truthseeker6804 If that's the case that's good (I'm don't do FPV). Its not even 32gb though, It has 32gb storage which is (apparently) only around 22gb due to the device software taking up 10gb. IMO if they wanted this to be popular with FPVers, they should have included a microSD card slot, plus a USB-C port.
@@truthseeker6804 DJI already offer a interchangeable macro lens and I’m sure companies like Freewell will offer other options. Only downside is they are also magnetic.

Not sure if you are aware of this, but the GoPro 10 doesn’t work with the media mod yet. “ they are going to make it work with an update “, as always is with GoPro. Apparently they don’t ever wait until there product is ready for the market because they know that there are suckers( including myself) that will buy an “almost “ working product.

Yeah the media mod and lens mod do not work with the Hero 10. They are going to sell a new and upgraded media mod and lens mod.

Modular design action cameras are dumb. Wait till the first time you take it to the beach and get sand in one of those connectors, or if you crack the lens and can't replace the cover, or if you have the non waterproof screen or battery attached and get into some unexpected weather when out riding.

You are exactly right on people reviewing the DJI camera! I have watched countless videos about the storage and have yet to see how they offload BOTH units and can find NOTHING! After the camera fill with memory if it don't overheat(A SEPERATE ISSUE) does the camera offload onto the other unit or do you have to use your phone? what's the DJI software like does it see the footage all in one storage place once its shot !What about low light conditions! Does the camera overheat using 1080p! What's the recording times for the internal memory on the different modes and on and on,YOU KNOW THE THINGS THAT REALLY COUNT! So its modulator, So its compact, So is cute...whatever! What's under the hood of that race car! Its like the videos of the insta 360 go2 all looks well until you see the recording times and the overheating and the NO mico card slot and on and on! Wheres the beef for bloggers on the go thats what I (as in me) want to know!Lol Im not asking you, but Im glad that you always state the obvious, why the heck don't they send the units to you to review? Hi my GoPro dangle was brocken after about two years I had to replace it other case my friend bought new one and it was Brocken right out of the box 😂 but I’m very happy with GoPro 10 and the original GoPro cage with microphone and mic Jack input 👍
Love your work! always love your honest reviews. Happy with my current Osmo action was tempted to upgrade to the 2 but yeah there are a few deal breakers in this one for me to pull the trigger.
They were targeting a specific customer which is people who want the smallest form factor camera. Basically a gopro session replacement. It will work well for people who fly fpv drones. Or if you want to snap it onto your shirt without being obtrusive. Things like a mic jack will probably come eventually. This camera is 1/3 the weight and probably half the size of a gopro.
If this was the case, they would just sell the camera part on its own.oh wait, it has no SD card slot, usb port for charging… what a waste of an opportunity
It's not ideal but I understand why they made some of the design choices and compromises. Not having ports made it easier to water proof and keep small form. If you get the battery pack version you get a sd card and usb-c port and they are swappable. I'd be surprised if they didn't come out with a low profile media module with usb, mic jack, hdmi out and sd card.
Gotta hop on to that affiliate train even if you don't have the product.
Some major design flaws with this offering.
1) No memory card slot in the main body.
2) The vertical modular layout does not yield the best option. Should have gone horizontal as well.
3) The previous camera had users buy into the ecosystem and so invested money in filters. That investment was now money flush down the toilet. Complete oversight/disregard for their user base. Not good Dji!!
4) For this new path to be at least somewhat beneficial to users, new cameras release should be compatible with existing add-ons in the future. However seeing how little regard Dji had for their existing user base this time round, I would not get my hopes up.

While the battery life is a bit stink this camera will likely make a great helmet cam for commuting assuming the waterproofing holds up, for me smaller size matters, I've got the hero 8 which is great but will consider this also.
The wide FOV is actually the only selling point for me - I want to use it for paragliding and be able to check my brake inputs after the fact! At this stage only 360 cameras can do that and they're a bit of a pain to work with....

I saw a clip of a USB-C mic being plugged directly into one of the mods in a DJI video today. But anyway, what I was hoping for was a modern Session... that camera module should have had a Micro SD card slot and a USB-C port so I could power it externally. Ordered the Hero 10 after watching a few reviews of the Action 2 ... can't wait to make some silent movies like the olden days!

As soon as I saw the release video for the Action 2 I knew my next stop was camera conspiracies. Was not disappointed. Agree that this is a step backwards……….however its probably going to be a big hit with everyone in the FPV drone community because of the form factor.
But the module charges the main camera right? So it's not possible that the main camera would drain first. It also has usb c on the other module so you could use external mic if you want to but the built in mic especially on the additional module is decent. Being it super wide is an opinion. Speaking with 480fps, you wouldn't even choose the akaso over the dji oa 1 right? The only thing i agree on this is the quick switch being gone.
"Simple is always the answer" should have been on the white board in big bold letters when DJI was thinking about updating the action.

Well the camera module always gets charged (seems like to 100%) by the other (screen or battery) module you attach so the main camera shouldn't run out before the screen
How stupid is that though. You are using the camera part alone and have no way of charging it unless you are sure to connect the second part. Why make it module if the first part cant be charged on its own . Very stupid

which action camera would you recommend for basic things like hiking, riding bikes at the beach, things like that? GoPro or DJI?

I like my little DJI Action, so I was curious about the 2, but it seems overly complicated. I just like how simple the Action 1 is.
It snot a vlog camera for sure and I think a way to incorporate wireless audio and every motovlogger or anyone using a helmet is gonna love this thing.

I understand that for the average person the points you mentioned could be quite valid, but for my usecase the size and especially the really wide angle lens are absolutely necessary.
I would mainly like to film POV rock climbing videos via some sort of helmet mount and since your head is super close to the rock the wide angle lens is a must. And the small size is important aswell in order for the camera to not bump into the rock all the time.
I saw that companies are already making cages with a built in charging port that would allow charging from am external (helmet mounted) power bank, so that would take care of the battery issue

I really question the motives of these companies: Sony - we made the best action cam ever, 4 years ago, let’s just not bother with a follow up. DJI - we made a great action camera, let’s remove all the great features for the sequel. Why can’t someone just nail it! It’s so obvious what’s needed for a great action / vlogging camera, why do they struggle so much.

Agree 100% with you. Bought it today, already booked the amazon return. 4k is terrible quality, that fov is ugly, focus & sharpness muddy as hell, battery drains so fast and you can cook an egg on it, wow dji really blew it this time
The best thing I saw about it was the macro lens adapter that Potato Jet showed in his video.
This update is a big miss fir me. No SD card slot. No swappable lense cover. No usbc port. 2x the price of the original.... the waterproofing goes away when you put accessories on. The magnets aren't strong enough to work without clips. The battery system is trash. Camera over heats.
I'm waiting for the next insta360 drops. They are actually making great stuff. Hopefully they drop a one x3 this year.

you forgot that there isn't interchangeable lens cover, like in gopro 8. all we needed from action 2, was wider angle and iso 6400, nothing more
Totally agree, I saw Peter review this thing and for the first time I’ve thought nah, tell us what you really think! Version 2 is the dumbest product I’ve ever witnessed.
One thing that the too wide angle does do, is that it gives plenty of leeway for stabilization.
I agree. Am totally disappointed too... _overheating issues_ , artefacts in videos, crop factor, _overlydone wide angle_ etc. and trying to _copy Insta360 modular_ ...albeit nice, should have meant taking a bit ore time to finese the product.
Is it all part of the rush to be a billion dollar company, or that it's loosing too many of the foreign expertise that helped to drive for finese. _Go figure!_
This is what happens when a company refuses to listen to it's customers. The worst part is now we have to wait yet another 2+ years for them try and fail again to listen to the customer! So, now we have no good "new" action cams available. We need more action cam companies, or maybe just that gets it right. I'll never buy another gopro in my lifetime, this I swear! So the old trusty OSMO Action 1 is still the only valid option between the two. And that's downright depressing if ya ask me!

The one segment that's celebrating the Action 2 is the FPV drone community. But it's missing a couple crucial features that would make it the uncontested champion of FPV cameras. The in-build battery and no SD card on-camera are just confusing choices IMO.
Agree .. I have no interest for this thing .. seems like a headache .. it's the type of camera that your focused on the camera way too often
