These engines and gearboxes were very popular to put in race cars when i used to break Renaults 25 years ago. Lots of after market bits to up the power, you will find a nice one if you want one. Or, these cars where supposed to have a v12 engine originally. I know a man in England who has built a v12 engine out of two straight 6 Kawasaki liquid cooled motorcycle engines. There is one in the Barber motorcycle museum. Would love to see a DMC12 with 12 actual cylinders.

From the looks of that car, it is not going original through your shop. As always, budget will dictate what is done. If it was mine, I would not go original. You will be putting a lot of cash into this build unless you have sponsors to help cover most of the changes. Also, don’t forget the frame may require work. With the above, you have just fully built a new car. There are cheaper was to go but they will look cheap as well. You want to go cheap ? Put in a used junkyard engine. I was stationed up in anchorage Alaska from 2000-2008. The entire time I was there there was an intact delorean just sitting on wood block next to an abandoned restaurant. I checked recently because i was wondering and it’s still there to this day. The great thing about Alaska is that it has the same corrosion index as my home state of Arizona which is virtually nothing. Despite the cold there’s no rust or corrosion up there (that was part of my job in the Air Force and AK/AZ are the two best places to be if your job is fighting and repairing corrosion as a fabricator) they don’t salt the roads either. So even by the recent pictures I’ve seen of it it still looks almost in perfect shape.
#DeLoreanLife I really feel for you guys, hopefully once you get another engine in there you'll be able to get your dream up and running. Good luck and can't wait to see the next episode of this DeLorean. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE. 🎄❄️☃️🎄
I believe that the engine is a PRV V6 unit found in Volvo 760 models and quite a few French cars of that period. Might be worth looking into and save you a whole lot of time and stress if you could source a used unit. Great watching though, you guys make such a good team..
Correct. There were over 1 million PRV V6 engines produced. The transmission on the DMC-12 was Renault. I had a Delorean from 2007 to 2010 and thankfully mine was in great shape. Ones that were painted back in the day were painted by dealers. (Some were painted later by owners if the the car was damaged in an accident) No Delorean ever came painted from the factory.
I believe this V6 was used in in Volvo, Delorean and Peugeot. I remember a lot of those engines sitting on the shelves in the salvage business. Maybe, just maybe someone has a usable engine for you to garner parts from or to install.
Love your videos very interesting simple and great to watch please fix that lovely Delorean it's worth every penny . Waiting to see more . Thank you for the time of filming and sharing it is not always easy . Big hello from Luxembourg
Awesome episode. I'd ditch the stock engine setup and put something more modern, reliable, efficient, etc. in it. The 3.6L V6 and 6-speed powertrain in the Camaros would be a blast in that thing (if you could get it to fit).
Derek Bieri from Vice Grip Garage found a Delorean on Motortrend Roadworthy Rescues that someone before him installed a GM LS Engine into it. I didn’t see the entire episode so I don’t know what was done to make that engine fit.
I have always love Delorean's and I once saw a black one that looked awesome. If this car indeed came from the factory in red, I think it would be awesome to restore it to its original glory. Blessings from CA.
I cracked up when Wyatt said he was glad the water separated from the oil, so they could reuse the oil. That was comedy gold! Keep the great videos coming and God bless!
Great to see some NEW content, y'all! Love it. The shop is looking good - I like the drive through you have now. and kudos to Christian for the great camera work - and the inset of the cylinder camera work is a professional touch!
A very enjoyable and interesting video folks, I've never seen a Delorean engine being pulled out and partially dismantled before, hope to see more on this car 😀👍👍👍
Wow, what a work guys! It’s alway great to see how well you two can work together… so very calm and understanding each other! Loved the video and how you both never give up and keep going no matter what! Can’t wait to see the next video on this one 👍😀👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Some guy named Derek Bieri on a little known series called Roadworthy Rescues did a RUN DMC 12 (De Lorean). He took out a perfectly good P.R.V. engine and shoved in a L.S. V8. Maybe he still has it sat around in Rusty Acres?
Great job on pulling out the dead engine . The V6 that they had fitted in the factory was known for being a little on the weak side , so maybe a small V8 or a Ford Eco Boost Turbo motor might be the way to go . And merry christmas from the UK.
TR, the car is still viable but you should shy away from a stock engine. There are many great v6 powerplants that would fit the chassis (with modification) like the Toyota truck series, the Early Buick (non-blower) and the 70s Chevy v6s that have cams, oversize pistons etc. available. Great Video! If anyone could sort this out I'm betting on the dynamic duo at Turnin' Rust!
Lance ... maybe a 4.3 gm V6 or LS swap ... but whatever the case it will be a lot of work with the rest of the cars issues... good luck and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
It won’t be a series at all. Vice grip garage ironically came up with a delorean same color and all? That’s because it’s the same car. Derik is friends with them so I’m 100% sure he gets the car and builds a twin turbo ls swap out of it
I really enjoy the engine teardown videos, especially when you can save 'em. That car deserves a second chance. Figure out the best path to getting a good motor in it (oem replacement or swap doesn't matter) and go for it guys! Love the concept at the end!!
I have loved the Deloreans since I saw all the Back to the Future movies. I really hope ya'll can find a way to get this car back on the road probably with a different engine.
First time commenting but long time subscriber since Turning Rust. Always love your content! That thing is awesome! Would love to see that restored with another V6 or would be cool to see a series 1 supercharged 3800 in there! God bless!
Need to pull it up om wheel ramps to get floor jack under it. That fit anything socket will have its greatest challenge. You're gonna have to get a big drill bit and drill it off
I know a V8 swap seems hard because of space, but what about a 4.3L GM V6. Good strong solid motors. Can't wait to see what you do with the car and I know you'll do right by it, one way or another. Merry Christmas to you and the family. God bless.
@@jankro1 3800's are designed primarily for transverse applications. That's why they work well in Fiero's. This car is not a transverse design, so the 4.3L would be a better choice. You'd have a better chance of finding a Vortec 4.3 over a fourth-gen 3800. Now a smaller 4.8 LS would be a treat.
@@ABRetroCollectionsum, the 3.8 was what powered the Grand National and T-Type and they were turbo rear wheel drive. The 3.8 was a rear wheel engine well before it went the wrong way under the hood.
It's funny seeing the design under the manifold cover you can kind of get the idea of the design on the BttF movies with the mr. fusion. Seeing the mudbug fest brochure made me chuckle being from Shreveport. Thanks for the vid guys, having to watch it in parts but looking forward to it.
Given the Delorean’s poor reputation with that engine, and the other successes of the PRV engine, I’d like to see you find another variant of the same engine. The "easiest" & "cheapest" swap is to replace the DeLorean's 2.8 PRV with a later Eagle 3.0 PRV. The benefits of that engine are the fact it's got more power, it's EFI (NOT mechanical K-Jet), later models have distributorless ignition, it's even fire, and it's a relatively straightforward engine swap. Not quite plug & play, but as close to that as possible with the DeLorean. Obviously that car is too far gone to restore. Just make the best possible driver you can out of it.
I will DEFINITELY watch this when it's over so I can see it from the beginning. Those PRV (Peugeot, Renault, Volvo) 2.8 V6 engines with CIS are a complete and utter pain to get running after they've been sitting. Still, AWESOME dream score!
This is an excellent video, thank you so much for sharing it! How does that engine differ from the rest of the PRV V6's? I don't know how 'generic' it is! But seeking out a Peugeot 605, Renault 25, Safrane, or Espace in the US may be as productive as finding another DeLorean! However, the Volvo counterpart may be more easily come by! 🙂 Anyhow, I wish you very good luck in sorting this, and hopefully you'll be able to share some footage of you having fun on the roads with it! I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and all the very best for the New Year! 🙂
I saw that car in Kaufman, TX on FM987 and almost stopped and asked if it was for sale but knew I wouldn't do anything with it. Hope you get it back running.
Number one thing that has to happen...strip that dealer red paint off, regrain the stainless and let her shine! Engine wise, DMC Houston has PRV's NOS in stock right now, but they are pricey, you could do a whole LS swap for cheaper than one of those engines and Mike has all the parts.
Since you found a brochure from Louisiana dated 1998, I checked to see if any hurricanes hit that state in 1998…..which could be the source of the water and mud in that block. Hurricane Georges hit Louisiana on September 20, 1998 doing $30.1 million in damage and was responsible for 3 deaths. Sustained winds hit 155 mph. Hope this helps. I’d like to see that thing fixed up like new; of course there’s probably not much profit margin in doing so. Love to watch you guys work. You gotta love old cars to do what you do.
I actually love it when you pull motors and break into them. "Devils in the details" right? Well you wont know what youre up against till you get into it.
Both Restored and Vice Grip Garage (correction: Roadworthy Rescues, still with Derek) getting red Deloreans, and videos dropping close to the same time? So cool! Keep up the good work and God Bless!
I think what really makes this DeLorean interesting is that its exterior is painted. Everybody wants these to look like Back to The Future stainless. It would be cool to restore this one back to the red paint as it came from the dealership. As far as those bucket seats are concerned, even though the foam may appear intact it got baked like the rest of the interior and most assuredly is hard as rock and should all be replaced. And since the interior is already trashed it would be cool to re-do it in all black.
😢 Sad to see the old engine with low miles just really bad like that. With that said, NOWS the time to give it the engine it should have always had. I would either install a 4.3L V6 or just go all out with a old school V8. There has to be some kind of adapter plates so the transmission will still work. I know LS engines has been done before, but i have never seen a old school V6 or old school V8 done. Not sure if they had trans problems but if so it might be better to change that too.
Such a shame to see history like these just sitting and rotting away. Looks like the outside might come back pretty nice, interior on the other hand is a different story but definitely work reviving. Look forward to seeing the step-by-step workings to get her road worthy.
Bring it right back around using used parts that are in good shape! The expert you consulted mentioned a cheap way to do this! Good luck you'll be driving it before you know! That car sits with the perfect folks!
G'day lance and Wyatt, love the effort you two, put into trying to getting it going, but those euro V6's are a pain even when they are working. 2 suggestions ,you could adapt a V6 US motor ,or go electric, and bolt the motor straight onto the 5 speed gear box and have the batteries up front , it would go very quick and silent, what ever do, keep it red,as red cars go faster. Keep up the great work and God bless
I love ur content and videos and as far as what to do with it it would probably be easier to v8 it but I'd also go with the factory motor as well it would be a toss up for me but I'd go with what was cheaper or easier to do
As always, win lose or draw. It was a great episode. I think you should keep going with it and put a small block V8 in it. It should definitely do 88 mph 😊.
Would be kinda cool to see you guys try slamming a TURBO 4 cylinder of some sort in there.... I run 20lbs of boost in my toyota land cruiser 3B 3.4 liter diesel and it scoots around quite nicely

Dodge Monaco and eagle premier had a 3.0 prv with a different firing order
The French come up with some strange designs.
Amazig video....excellent job!
Thanks for all your efforts. If you rebuild that engine I suspect you would learn a lot and have a unique car.
This is an epic undertaking guys! What and amazing find!
I believe this V6 was used in in Volvo, Delorean and Peugeot. I remember a lot of those engines sitting on the shelves in the salvage business. Maybe, just maybe someone has a usable engine for you to garner parts from or to install.
Would love to see more episodes on this car
I didn’t see the entire episode so I don’t know what was done to make that engine fit.
the engine might fit, the transmission wouldnt.
If they're gonna do that, hell no on the 3.6. BUT a 3.8 with a SC or Turbo would be excellent. Super simple and reliable.
@@jims_junkexactly what I was thinking.
Ford 3.7 cyclone , or a Buick 3.8 turbo.
I have always love Delorean's and I once saw a black one that looked awesome. If this car indeed came from the factory in red, I think it would be awesome to restore it to its original glory. Blessings from CA.
No Deloreans left the factory painted. They didn't have a paint building. Some dealers did offer to paint them.
Great show guys. I hope that you get the car running. Blessings
I cracked up when Wyatt said he was glad the water separated from the oil, so they could reuse the oil. That was comedy gold! Keep the great videos coming and God bless!
Sounds like the guy has another block for you. I would get that and restore this car. Expensive but worth it. Great episode. Thanks
Always loved the DeLorean. Looking forward to seeing how you proceed with this. Merry Christmas to you both and families.
I was hoping the engine would have been in better shape. Maybe a LS motor and upgraded parts.
Hey Derek has a running DeLorean motor. He's installing a LS
Looks like you're going to need a 121 gigawatt flux capacitor to get you back on the road. Good luck! Great video, thanks! 😉👍🏎🏁🏁
Hopefully you can find the parts you need to bring that thing back the way it was that will make a beautiful car.
Guys, vice grip garage just put an LS in one of those. Kerry
Always enjoy y'alls videos, this will definitely be a great series!
I have loved the DeLoreans since I saw The Wedding Singer movie....😂
Throw a 305 or 302 in it. A TP6 speed. And call it a day. Enjoyed this video a few times! Keep up the great work you two +
First time commenting but long time subscriber since Turning Rust.
God bless.
3800's are supposed to be reliable too
@@jankro1 3800's are designed primarily for transverse applications. That's why they work well in Fiero's. This car is not a transverse design, so the 4.3L would be a better choice. You'd have a better chance of finding a Vortec 4.3 over a fourth-gen 3800. Now a smaller 4.8 LS would be a treat.
Or a 4.0L Toyota
the Honda motors. would be kinda fun to see something JDM in one. LS is nice an all but something different would work too
@@ABRetroCollectionsum, the 3.8 was what powered the Grand National and T-Type and they were turbo rear wheel drive.
Just make the best possible driver you can out of it.
my favorite brothers from Texas I always look forward to your videos
I will DEFINITELY watch this when it's over so I can see it from the beginning. Those PRV (Peugeot, Renault, Volvo) 2.8 V6 engines with CIS are a complete and utter pain to get running after they've been sitting. Still, AWESOME dream score!
Be brave!! I got my 82 Mercedes alive!!
LS swap it like Derek did....good luck! Will definitely itely be following!
Anyhow, I wish you very good luck in sorting this, and hopefully you'll be able to share some footage of you having fun on the roads with it!
Would love to see this car brought back to life!!
You gotta love old cars to do what you do.
car is a piece of History
Numbers matching low mileage DeLoeran. Replace sleeves. & pistons etc. would love to see that. 👍👍❤️
Those don't look like they're much fun to work on. Good video
Great video. Keep up the good work. Merry Christmas 🎉
Love the content guys god bless each of you
I actually love it when you pull motors and break into them. "Devils in the details" right? Well you wont know what youre up against till you get into it.
Looks like a good candidate for an LS swap, just saying probably cheaper and less headaches
Visegripgarage just did that with the exact same car
@@dan111509 at first I thought it was the exact same car, then I thought well hell there's an engine guys VGG might even just give it to you
Another good one guys 👍👍
Both Restored and Vice Grip Garage (correction: Roadworthy Rescues, still with Derek) getting red Deloreans, and videos dropping close to the same time? So cool! Keep up the good work and God Bless!
The DeLorean that I saw Vice Grip Garage do was a white one. Did he do two?
Vice Grip Garage has a BRICKLIN Not a DeLorean.. Totally different cars!
Do not confuse the BRICKLIN with a DELOREAN just because they have gull wing doors! The DeLorean is a far better car!
@@david_echo he rescued a red one recently
@@highland-scott902 you mean this DeLorean? ruclips.net/video/cEQ9miXLuGM/видео.html
Props to you guys, I would have given up like four times during this whole process.
@restored find a good mom and pop upholstery shop and commission them to do the interior. They can rebuild those seats.
that paint job is incredible. A red DeLorean.. super cool!
No electric motor!!
You guys are Awesome!!!
I love ur content and videos and as far as what to do with it it would probably be easier to v8 it but I'd also go with the factory motor as well it would be a toss up for me but I'd go with what was cheaper or easier to do
I think that the only right thing too do in this situation. Put a LS V8 as it should be from the beginning...😊👍
Yes I think a paint job would really change the looks of it.
I think I would keep it red because even though it was dealer painted still makes it pretty rare.
