Part of your overheating issue could be that piece you found in the trunk. If it’s an air dam that goes under the bumper to direct air to the radiator, you have to have it. A lot of people take them off of fbodies and then can’t figure out why they start to overheat. It’s essential, if that’s what it is

I was wondering if his pulley ratio was off on the water pump. Those are some pretty big diameter pulleys so I was wondering if lack of flow might have been the issue.
I wouldn't call this a defeat Derek. You did everything you could short of rebuilding the engine. And the fact that building a go-cart with your son was so important, because you made a promise speaks volumes about you as a parent and a man. Love your channel and your content brother. Derek, you will never know how much your videos have helped me in the last couple of months, I have been waiting to get a neck surgery, and I have not been able to do nothing, I can’t tell you how many I’ve watched, its been a blessing to watch you and your family. My favorite RUclips channel by far
What level is your surgery for? I had one back in 2010 on level 5/6. Surgery helped for awhile but having major issues lower now. Down in my lumbar area there's a huge section that all disk have totally desenegrated completely and it's all one fused mass. Back in early 22 I lost more disk. Felt like someone was yanking my nuts out for about a week.
My husband and i were laugh/crying during the part where you said, "I'm waiting for this door to end my life." God bless you, and thank you for awesome content.
Him, especially when he started that Ford V8. That is a sound that I have not heard in a while. The combination made me smile, a little more than usual. Thank you for the smiles.
You know when someone trys to sound like they know something ,they useless dont. And vice-vesa, And this guy sounds like he doesn't know what he is talking about,so thats good news. I'm sure he is very knolagable ,I've seen him get all kinds of cars on the road and drive half way across the country. So this will be good.
Freddy is cool and it was awesome of him to "sell" the Bricklin to Derek by donating the price to charity AND for helping Derek a bunch to get it "roadworthy"-ish. 👍
Man Freddy is such a class act, what an awesome guy! I just watched a video of him helping out Matt Armstrong last week and now I see a guy helping out my favorite RUclipsr of them all... 💪💪💪💪
Another great rescue. Right after high school, I worked summer jobs in the service department of a local Cadillac dealer in Pittsburgh. For the short life of the company, they also carried Bricklin so we had acces to both new and those brought in for service. They were so unique back in the day and sounded great (to my 18 year old ears). I remember new models in lime green and orange. I think the initial models had AMC engines in them and then came the 351's, you know, just like a Pantera. One came in for service because the doors were inop and it took several guys to get the thing open. The lot boy (me) had to crawl in and steer while they pushed it into the shop to try to get it fixed. Nothing major - just a distant Bricklin memory... Thanks for the trip in the way-back machine.
READ ME! ... I found a 1975 Bricklin and brought it back to life. It is relatively easy to work on. Once you sort out the doors the car is a blast to drive. I can send you pics of what I did and the easy way to make the doors work. Most everything is available ... carpet set, brakes, trim, etc. The guy who designed the doors was still alive, when I did mine, and had a business redoing these in Virginia. You can even remove the outer skin and replace it with newer thin wall fiberglass units and paint the car any color. The trans should be a sought after FMX and he was right the underpinnings are AMC Hornet. You have a radio which is rare and expensive plus you have air which I did not.
Derek, you were made for this. The reason you’re having so much success is because you found your calling. You are doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing and everything in the universe has lined up perfectly for you because you were made for this. Nobody does it better. Your unique personality and incredible skill set blend so perfectly. You deserve every bit of success you are achieving and working for💪. You gave that Brickland one hell of an effort, man I called it a win.
I was watching you and Freddy start the car with the old distributor back in and I noticed the license plate was 24 7 and it just popped into my head that’s exactly how hard you work. Your commitment to being successful for your family and to enrich your viewers lives is inspiring thank you
Fills me with pride as a Cannahdian to see the quality workmanship that went into crafting these machines. Thanks Derek, this was one heck of a revival 👊
They were built on the east coast and they had serious issues with the workers only putting in enough hours to collect unemployment and then quitting. There's a reason nobody puts factories over there.
@@adamward3100 You can go watch the documentary for yourself, clearly its not something you'll be proud of, but it was a major factor, right from Malcolm Bricklin himself!
This is awesome !!! when I saw this posted and noticed it was over 2 hours the level of excitement can’t be described in words .. Derek is one of few people who can make this car ROAD WORTHY and great again!
2:12:50 Oh man, that got me a bit unexpectedly. Besides the patience and resilience with the car project you continually prove to be a great dad. Great example for us all.

Nice video Derek. Thanks for taking us all the way. You seem to keep it together and stay so calm where in that same situation I'd be chocking back a panic attack.
You have to admire a fella for building a car from scratch. Oh, and that guy Bricklin helped a little. Truly amazing to watch you work. That's one car that should be put in a museum, so it won't ever hurt anybody else!
Killer vid and as a dad, I’m proud of you as a fellow dad that you would make sure you’re home to work on your sons project with him. Good man. Keep up the good work!
My absolute favorite car ever. I worked at a dealership that sold these when new and loved driving them, a little to much money at the time for a 20 year old. With so few left, It should be restored or at least brought back to running for someone else to finish. Even after watching this , I still want one. Someday……
I don't often seek out this channel. Initially I found it through auto play. Taking a nap on a day off and waking up this man just working on cars was a joy. The same thing happened just now. Woke up from a nap and spent like an hour watching this man do what he does best. There's a certain charisma and philosophy you have on life that I think a lot of people (including myself) can really take some notes from. You're so tranquil and calm about this stuff. I don't work on cars much, tech is more my domain when something needs a fixin. But part of my workflow is to say fuck at least 10 times for something to eventually be fixed lmao. You're a good man. A backwoods philosopher in some ways even haha. I love this channel. I respect the hell out of people who just refuse to let stuff die and do absolutely everything in their power to get things back in working order. We live in such a throwaway society nowadays. People putting so much time into preserving things like this should be celebrated 🍻
Well said Later_Nerd! I too pull the F bomb out of my toolbox a lot more than I should. Although, since subscribing to this channel, I find myself saying: "Well, help me understand!" more and more and the F bomb less and less. Thank you Derek for making me a slightly better person, and the laughs are much appreciated too.
Absolutely loved this episode.!! You and Freddy worked great together. He seemed like he was trying to uphold a higher standard of repair considering he has multiple exotics verses your normal level debauchery. You rock!!
Constantly amazed at the lengths Derek will go to to try and get these rescues home. It is just utterly incredible what he will put himself through!!! We’re going to put that one in the “W” column Derek… No problem. It may not have made it back home, but still a “win“ in my book. Thanks for the great content!!!

Hey Derek!!!! Have you done anything with the bricklin?? I sure think that's a freaking awesome car!! If you still having over heating problems.... I'd scrap the old Ford 351, and drop a late model Chevy/GMC LS1 in it.... Just my thoughts.....but what ever you do, that's a cool old car!!!! Love your shows!!! Love you man!!!
I test drove Briklins in 73, 74. They were prototype cars and part of the testing program for AMC at Mich. International Speedway. They originally had American Motors engines. All the drivers at the track wanted to drive the Bricklin, as compared with pacers, gremlins, matadors, ambassadors and jeeps. The bricklin was a very sweet ride back then, thank you so much for the video, it took me back to my youth!
@@jupitercyclops6521 , Hey now! Go easy on the Pacer, eh? These days, the fishbowl cars are all the rage, but back in the 70's the only thing that had more glass than a Pacer was a Pacer Wagon. You could deliver pizza in that and not even need a heater box to keep it warm. My buddy's (mom's) Pacer turned out to be quite the off-roader, as well. Except, that is, when he could call me in the middle of the night and I'd have to sneak my (mom's) Marquis Brougham Trail Boss out to haul his Pacer butt out of the mud. Man, those were the days.
I remember these cars when they came out... I was in high school, and found out for the first time that just because a car looked "exotic" didn't mean it was a good car! I had subscriptions to the big three automotive magazines at the time (Road & Track, Car and Driver, and Road Test), and they were pretty honest about the Bricklin... which meant that no one in their right mind would buy one. I guess they were right. On the brighter side, it's great to see Derek and Freddy together-- two of the nicest guys in the RUclips automotive community-- big fan of both of them!

On my 1974 Corvette, there is what looks sort of like a chin spoiler underneath the front, but it is actually a wind deflector to deflect wind from below up to the rad since there is no grill. The SV1 looks similar and what was found in the trunk might a wind deflector, which may help with the overheating issues. BTW, my understanding is that fans are never the issue when overheating occurs over 35mph since that's around the point where the wind speed exceeds fan ability.
Yep your right about the wind deflector that's how it was on my 1974 bricklin both years the body was the same only the engine was different the 74 had an AMC 360 and the 75 had a Ford 351 engine
@@nickrenaud7753 you guys are right on about wind deflector,my 1986 v8 trans am Hit something on the ground and rip that deflector away, as a result right after that, my Radiator fan would have to allways be on, to stop the engine from over heating,as opose to just turn on when on a stop fror few minutes

One of the episodes was about the Bricklin SV1 so it would be cool to see that thing looking nice again and running as good as it can. I have a soft spot for these so the more saved the better!
Cation is the better part of grander. You gave it a hell of a try and you’re still over 99% successful on these “resurrect them with bailing wire and a prayer then drive them 500 miles + home” “ dare devil challenges. Every one of them seemed so insurmountable as to wonder how you ever made it home. It’s an excellent video and I, for one, am not disappointed. I think I would make sure I have a working charging system for trips over 200 miles. I also wonder if a new water pump might have helped although I didn’t catch what caused the final breakdown. You have set a new personal best for “breakdowns per mile” if that’s any consolation! Much Love, DrRick.
Derik, I'm having an absolute shitty day today at work, and I have to thank you for making it as good as it is. I have had this video on while I'm running service calls, and you have helped me not want to just start mowing over people on the road ( I'm totally joking about that ) But you have helped me have a much better day than it was. I'm a new watcher, and definitely a fan. Thanks for giving us some enjoyment for the day.. Love your adventures
The benefits your boys will receive (over and above getting to do cool stuff with dad) by you keeping your promises to them are beyond measurement. Respect to you for doing the right thing, Derek.
@@fishhuntadventure I know what you mean. I would never go on a long journey without basic tools, wires, points etc expecting to break down. Cars today are far too electronic - so no hope if they did happen to fail.

The 1974 SV-1 had a 220hp AMC V8, while the '75 version had of course the Ford 351C rated at a paltry 175hp. Many changes had to be made to the subframe in order to accommodate the Ford engine.
2:12:50 - 2:12:55. That says it all. The man definitely has his priorities straight. Just remember ya'all, Derek spends a lot of time away from the kids and Mrs. to put these adventures together. They all make a lot of sacrifices to do that. He could of toughed it out and limped that car home, but he made a commitment to help build a go-cart, and that commitment is gonna be kept. Same, just like a vette
Came here to see if someone had commented on the air dam....
The "air dam" actually creates a low pressure area behind the radiator that helps draw air through the radiator.
I wouldn't call this a defeat Derek. You did everything you could short of rebuilding the engine. And the fact that building a go-cart with your son was so important, because you made a promise speaks volumes about you as a parent and a man. Love your channel and your content brother. Look forward to the next one! Cheers
This was a win, hands down.
@@TimBowermeister i guess you can call it a win , i mean he did get it home so yeah , head gaskets are the over heating problem . until you fixed them its never going to stop.
That's exactly how my husband found Derek 2 1/2 years ago. Good luck 👍
Just a random Feller here, but I hope you get your surgery soon and that it all goes well and you have a swift recovery!
My husband and i were laugh/crying during the part where you said, "I'm waiting for this door to end my life." God bless you, and thank you for awesome content.
Derek can really brighten a fellas day when everything else is crappy! So thankful for this man’s dedication and work ethic!
I'd have to agree
You are soooo right.
Absolutely, made my night seeing a new video
I could've sworn his name was john...
Him, especially when he started that Ford V8. That is a sound that I have not heard in a while. The combination made me smile, a little more than usual. Thank you for the smiles.
One of the hardest working men on RUclips and totally committed to his family!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
Derek and Freddie working on this 'brick' of a car is just gold. The you tube mechanic collaborations are fantastic!
Better then any Tv shows I've seen that's for shure.👍
Would love to see part 2 on several of these vehicles. how do they look after you get them home and assumed torn apart and rebuilt?
When you get down to the bare bones of these you will be in amazed at how much is construction, not design, that compromises the soul of an automobile.
Freddy is a nice guy, I got the impression he was hoping a lift wouldn’t be necessary but ended up full in with Derek this was great.
Freddy is anass giving or selling that to Derek
And that laugh when Derek did that burn out😂

You know when someone trys to sound like they know something ,they useless dont. And vice-vesa, And this guy sounds like he doesn't know what he is talking about,so thats good news. I'm sure he is very knolagable ,I've seen him get all kinds of cars on the road and drive half way across the country. So this will be good.
Never expected a tavarish / VGG collab, and I’m happy to see it happen
Thanks for the trip in the way-back machine.
i helped build that bricklin in that year...they were a dreen car back in the day
I went school on them.back in the day for a dodge dealer ship those had parts from all brands good luck
READ ME!
The things this man does to take us on adventure in a car that hasn't ran in 40years is amazing and i enjoyed every bit of it👍
Derek, you were made for this.

Nice video Derek. Thanks for taking us all the way. You seem to keep it together and stay so calm where in that same situation I'd be chocking back a panic attack.

I remembered them using AMC Motors as well.

Old pacer would possibly out last new jeeps.
They have plastic valve covers!!!
