  • Join in with the Restored crew as they walk through the "Valley of Death" to try and revive some life back into this 1981 Delorean DMC-12. After finding trouble in the "valley", the guys keep the faith in hopes to see these dry bones back to life. Going the full 9 yards, the team fights against rusty bolts, questionable slime, and deteriorating parts. After fighting the good fight of faith, will the crew be able to see this ol' classic resurrected or is this motor going to need an obituary?

      engine was, from memory, a Renault unit, which was also used by Volvo. they should be fairly easily available, although many in the USA are converting to V8 power to give them the performance they always should have had.

      @@petelattimer6808 yeah, I am kind of bored with a LS-swapping everything, but I have seen these cars with an LS4 from a FWD car that brings them up over 300hp. I don't think many mods are required and the original gearbox is used (with internal component upgrades).

      Engine was also used in the Peugeot 604 with 3 carbs (1 single plus 1 double) or with injection. I owned a 604 SL in Norway. Actually, these engines can be made to perform very well with some special parts. Even a turbo. They can do easily 7000 rpm without damage to valvetrain , it is originally very good balanced. As a engine unit they can be made to do about 300 HP with turbo/supercharger and it will last if done correctly. @@petelattimer6808

    Awesome video! So much better than just swopping the engine out, there is no fun in watching that anymore. You can absolutely pull this motor through the valley of death, that block is definitely fixable by welding holes shut with gussets or drilling and tapping holes. What an epic storyline this will be with your channel’s name, the valley of death issue and second chances! Please get her running again🙏🙏

    • @ingresswizard9044
      @ingresswizard9044 7 месяцев назад +1

      But why tho? The original engine was sub par even when new and had tons of issues. Put a modern engine in it and make it at least reliable.

    • @pieterloock8911
      @pieterloock8911 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@ingresswizard9044 100% agree with what you say, especially from reliability standpoint, but those cars properly restored and numbers matching will reach silly money in future, whereas a modern engine swop out will also cost fair bit but you will have very little value in the end. Either option will be a tonne of work, so I would choose the one that leaves me with the best investment when all is said and done. Plus I am just a sucker for trying to save any old engines, can’t stand the thought of someday soon only having electric motors to get excited about…

    The more important question is, once the body is stripped to a shell and that paint is removed, is it in good shape? If so, then discuss how to proceed with other DeLorean youtubers and owners. You may even be able to do a collaboration with DeLorean nation and those who installed the LS6 (LS anyway) engine swap and have a car combining the best of the old, with the best of the new.

    I watched for the carnage and was not disappointed. That was a lot of effort to pull that engine apart. Alex on Legit Street Cars did a full restoration on his DeLorean but his was only showing the first signs of the valley of death syndrome. He is a master mechanic with over 20 years experience.

    Even in France the V6 PRV (Peugeot, Renault, Volvo) wasn't famous because of : low power, big fuel consumption, bad balancing (at the very start it was a V8 project).

    I went to college back in late ‘60s in Daytona Beach, Fla. at that time you could drive on the beach. Some folks would park too far out at low tide. Come back to find there car under water. That would explain the total water damage and the sea shell in the engine. You may find more salt water damage when you attack the interior. Keep up the good work.

    Seems to be a couple decent options beyond a direct engine replacement that make nothing for horsepower. My first choice would be a TT LS swap and second a built Grand National swap. I would like to see this car put together to hold the extra power. Finally the finish should not be that patina crap. If you don’t have the funds to do it right then don’t do it at all. Have fun Wyatt and Lance, stay safe.

    This is one of those times where you just let the engine go and find a better 6 cylinder engine, or even a 4 cylinder from a newer car and just replace it. They weren't great engines when they came out of the factory, and a rebuild would cost more than it's worth. It's sad to say, but you just can't fix everything.

    As a young man l was a mechanic at a Renault dealership, l hate the way those engines are so misunderstood and underappreciated.
    I used to service those engines on a regular basis and trust me, they're a good engine when used correctly in the right vehicle.
    The big mistake that Delorean made with that engine was using the normally aspirated version , the turbo version used in the alpine and mvs sport's cars behaved like quite a different animal.
    The n/a version there however still was a very good smooth engine but was much better suited to more sedate use in sedans such as the r30,r25, Volvo 264,760 and Peugeot 604 etc .
    Don't hate the engine, hate the jerk who put it in the wrong car.
    Ideally, Delorean should have gone with the aluminium rover/Buick v8 in one of its variations or turboed that v6 like alpine did.

    You-all need a kiddie pool to put under that motor to catch the drips! Great teardown.

    Liking the bloopers at the end! And as cool as it would be for the original engine to run, I say you should put something else in there.

    Ok I did a little web searching. The PRV engine was made from 1974 to 1998 by Puegeot/Renault/and Volvo Cars. It is the same engine used in the Delorean. This shouldn’t be too hard to procure. Good Luck and I hope you get
    McFly home again.
