I'm from ukraine, my mother first found out about it around 29th of April when they visited her uncle in Tallinn (Estonia) and they could listen to "The voice of America" (a western radio station that soviet government was trying to jam, but you could still catch it on the outskirts of the country), and they said on the radio that there was an explosion on a nuclear power plant in the Soviet Union. The soviet government said nothing at that time yet and there was a big parade/demonstration on the 1st of May in Kiev (100 km away from Prypiat), despite the disaster.

There were no provisions made for radiation safety anywhere around the nuclear power plant at Chernobyl...as far as anyone was told by the folks in charge of the Soviet Union, the RBMK reactors at Chernobyl were so safe that pretty much no provision needed to be made for any possible reactor disaster. That is why the firefighters did not have any protection from radiation with them, that is why the local hospital had no stable iodine in pill form to counteract the radioactive iodine in the fallout, and that is why so many people have such a hard time believing that anything catastrophic had happened...even after it actually did happen. The people who lived nearby were told that the Chernobyl power plant was completely safe, were taught nothing about how to act in the event of a major problem, and were intentionally not told about any of the risks of radiation.

A dosimeter is a device to measure absorbtion of ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation is a form of energy that can remove electrons from atoms, which is damaging to living material and can cause cancers and other organ damage.

Iodine can be used to reduce the damage to living tissue by ionizing radiation. It's often given by medics if there is radiation exposure.

@@johnathanmichaud867 No, the thyreoid gland absorbs iodine. You protect it from absorbing radioactive iodine (from the reactor core) by taking a lot of non radioactive one so it can't absorbe any more.

Amazing series. The constant and powerful sense of claustrophobic dread is so well presented.

Oh boy...jumping directly into this series after Band of Brothers...I hope the content is not too dark and depressing for you.
This a really good series...one of the best ever made...but the producers did not get everything correct. Some things were changed intentionally for the purposes of storytelling, and the makers of the series put in a series of notes at the end of the last episode of the series explaining some of them...they also put out a podcast for each episode that discusses some of the things that were not fully correct. However, I do recommend you check out the History vs Hollywood article on Chernobyl when you are done watching the whole series, so you can find out about the other things that the producers got wrong that they do not admit to. Definitely wait until you are done with the series so you do not spoil anything for yourself.

This show is more horrifying than any other fictional show like the last of us because of how realistic and close to the events it portraits

Oh, I remember this series! It’s heavy, but very good. I think you’ll enjoy it, as long as it doesn’t get too bleak for you!

This is incredibly good show. Make sure to watch a short epilogue after episode 5. They will explain what happened to Chernobyl after the accident and what happened to all the people who were involved in the liquidation

I would hold off watching the infographics episode…… not that its not excellent, but just for the fact that you are going to get a layman’s education in what happened as this series progresses…. It might be best to ride along like you are just another witness….

This series isn’t entirely accurate from a scientific point of view - but I don’t think the science is the point of the series, so … lol. ❤
