The Suitcase-Sized Minigun is Going into Full Production

- Two years after generating a lot of buzz at the 2017 SHOT Show, Empty Shell returned to announce that their XM556 suitcase-sized minigun is going into full production.
Half the size of an M134 Minigun, the XM556 Microgun achieves it’s compact size by firing the smaller 5.56mm round. Traditional miniguns fire the 7.62mm round. Designed as a defensive suppression weapon, the XM556 aims to be cheaper and more flexible, albeit less powerful, than the original minigun that dates back to 1960,
According to Jeff M. Pitts, Empty Shell’s CEO and president, his company spent the last two years fine tuning and tweaking the gun. He expects the weapon to be in the hands of militaries in the next six months.
Although he couldn’t give exact details since they’re classified, he was able to point out a number of improvements that were made to the XM556 since it’s release two years ago. The gun’s barrels now rotate in either direction making it easier to clear jams. The gun can be fired at 90 degree angles up and down, as well as completely upside down. The rate of fire has been increased - somewhere around the 6000 rounds per minute mark.
Pitts was proud to say that the XM556 is a highly customizable weapon system that can be fit to a variety of platforms and vehicles. “You let your imagination run wild,” he said. “You tell me where you want it, and we’ll put it there.”
Currently, the XM556 is only available to the military and law enforcement. You can stay up to date with XM556 developments by visiting the Empty Shell website.
Guns.com plans to visit the Empty Shell factory in the coming months to film a feature video about this exciting new weapon.

according to the website, a SpotMini can carry 30kg/66lb payload the XM556 weighs 7.2kg/16lbs, assume 10kg/22lb for mount and targeting sensors, and that leaves you with 13KG/30lb for ammo.
wouldn't be much use for prolonged use but for searching for houses etc. it would be brilliant as the SpotMini can navigate on virtually any terrain.

It's a microgun, the little brother of the minigun. The minigun is and always has been a 6 barrel rotary machine gun that fires 7.62x51 nato., the microgun is and always has been the same thing in 5.56x45 nato. They were both designed in the sixties by general electric for the US military but the military saw no need for the microgun and the design was dead after that.
The GE M134 Minigun is a scaled down version of the M61 Vulcan and that is the reasoning fir calling it a minigun, as in, it's not as big as the original, just like microgun isn't as big as the minigun.

No civilian needs an AR-15. They need a handheld gatling gun.
Something like this could actually work as an active protection system if tied to an APS radar. The high rate of fire, and low recoil make it ideal for shooting down missiles. The 5.56mm ammo means you can carry a lot of ammo too. Larger vehicles could (in theory) carry multiple guns for shooting down multiple simultaneous threats.
That micro micro-minigun looks perfect for a WarMachine shoulder mount.
Would be cool to see it used on one of those exo suits. Just for kicks.
Couldn't be mounted the same way because of it's recoil. It would have to be arm mounted or preferably on a steady rig with recoil compensation.

That goes the other way around. You put the little one on the arm so it doesn't get in the way as much and you put the big one on the opposing shoulder for better support, easier aiming and the ability to support it with your other hand. But then again none of this applies to mechs but rather power armor.
On a Mech you'd probably want at least a Vulcan or something like that otherwise you're not really justifying your weight - that's unless it's a secondary in which case it'd probably be better to stick an M2 on there.

In this instance for the microgun , 12 seconds of fire would be 500 rounds, which you can pick up in bulk for under 30c per round. That’s just $150 for 12 seconds of freedom.

Miniguns were never mounted on Jeeps. The only time the Minigun and the Jeep even served together was in Vietnam. Sometimes in modern times they're mounted on Humvees but the ammo doesn't last long at all.
