Wouldnt surprise me if Robert Wardhaugh consider himself a nerd and a proud one at that. But calling him a loser for being a nerd is kind of sad and shows insecurity.

Dragon Lance was a thing for awhile, and while I couldn't stand it, many people enjoyed those books. While I enjoy D&D, grittier fiction, like game of Thrones, is what I prefer.

      Abda Samio you cannot compare Skype and Twitch in any way. And Robert is 49 years old according to the video, no idea what his friends who play with him are but I'm guessing something similar. That quiet a few years over the average age of viewers on Twitch. And Twitch users on a lot of channels are quiet something else you don't get anywhere else on social media or streaming sites.
      But that's not all, it takes effort to stream a (board), there's a good chance they don't want to deal with that at all.

I might want to play a Lawful Neutral Paladin who took up an Oath of Conquest to improve the nation they live in and generally just get shit done or a Chaotic Good Paladin that swore an Oath of the Ancients to preserve nature, regardless of the laws of men or gods.

    • @MrBrachiatingApe
      @MrBrachiatingApe 4 года назад +27

      @@lt.branwulfram4794 I'm glad 5e allows variety; one of my players wanted to be a Pally, and the thought of him playing anything but Chaotic was just--laughable. He's a walking Chaos machine.
      Ultimately, though, I was glad he chose to be a Paladin of a Thor-ish kind of God of War, Music, and Revelry, because (since he's a newb) the rest of the party has to convince not to 1) become a murder hobo or 2) get a job at a local import business for 5s/day. God knows why. His newest plan? He wants to become an agricultural monopoly...at level 4. Literally saving up his share of the party loot to buy a chicken farm (his pally was a farm boy...)
      As I said, walking Chaotic, but at least when he's around shit happens. I'm often forced to tapdance, but hey, it makes it lively for everyone.

      @@KortovElphame I mean you could but it isn't really the same. If you play Wargames you are generally limited to small skirmishes or pitched battles and a fairly rigid ruleset. In Warhammer for example, you can't really go to an Inn for the day to discuss your next move, or trick that one guard to handing you the keys to a dungeon. Wargames aren't particularly narrative in the same way D&D is. Wargames are pretty much battle oriented only unless you come up with your own rules. And as far as I'm aware, D&D and other RPGs are the only games where you can actually go around as a group with each member represented by a player. Just a thought.

    Interesting premise, but really wish there was more information about the actual game he has been playing. D&D is all about storytelling and we got zero insight into the actual world he has built in the past 35 years. Impressive collection of miniatures, but missed the mark on the real story here.

    • @SamIAm-kz4hg
      @SamIAm-kz4hg 7 лет назад +8

      vergeofsanity
      I think you missed the mark and the point of the story.

    • @vergeofsanity
      @vergeofsanity 7 лет назад +249

      No, I think I got it. He has a huge collection of miniatures to aid in his game, allowing for a good variety of settings and scenarios. He has people fly from around the country (and teleconference in from around the globe) to play in his game. And, he has been doing this for 35 years. It's interesting, to be sure, but it's only a surface level view of what makes this "Never-Ending Game of Dungeons & Dragons".
      I think what bothers me is that the video leans on the premise that "the same game" has been going on for 35 years. I have not played D&D, but my understanding is that DMs set up scenarios and campaigns for the players. So, is the scenario he set up 35 years ago really still going? How in 35 years have his players not reached the end goal if this is the case? Or have they, and instead has he just been DMing 35 years of different campaigns? Are the players in the video the original players that started 35 years ago?
      Does his game take place in one cohesive world? Or does it change from campaign to campaign? If it's all in the same world, surely 35 years of adventures in that world would have a "Great Big Story" to tell.
      Robert says that the power of friendship keeps the game going, and that he had to make it the best game any of his friends had played to keep them coming back. But how does he do that? Yes he has a big table with lots of miniatures to move around, but again, that is just surface level. What is he doing in the game that keeps players coming back?
      As I said in my original comment, a lot of what D&D is about is the story you are creating when you play. There is a story that Robert and his players are creating that has spanned 35 years, surely it must be an epic tale, one that draws people from around the country. Yet we got no insight into what that story is. What is this world they play in, how has it changed in 35 years? Who are the characters and how have they changed in 35 years? How many players have passed through this world in 35 years? What amazing things have they seen and done?
      THOSE are the questions that should be answered. He even talks about how things are dynamic and growing. But HOW? Hearing that someone has been a D&D Dungeon Master for 35 years is impressive, but hearing the stories he has crafted is what is really interesting.

    • @peteface24
      @peteface24 7 лет назад +121

      "So, is the scenario he set up 35 years ago really still going?"
      Possibly, yes.
      I have played a couple of the boxed sets (big adventure campaigns). I played with two different groups about once a month or so. Both took us about ten years to play. Both groups of players and characters are still playing. We have moved on to new adventures and challenges.
      If you want to know more about some of the adventures you'll need to play the game. Generally a game has an overarching story line that might or might not be clear to the characters and players immediately. The fun of the game is in the way someone runs the game. Good descriptions and interesting encounters need some artistic flair, and can't just be described to you. You'd need to play them.
      "THOSE are the questions that should be answered."
      This video is less than 3 minutes long. I think you really missed the point. There are other videos online of people actually playing, if you want insight into that. When people ask me about the game, I always tell them that they need to play it to get an idea.
      If you were disappointed that you didn't get what you really wanted, then you had some pretty unreal expectations from a very short video. And to be honest, you came off sounding almost rude.
      BTW, a lot of the 2nd edition D&D (the game he plays) can be found online for free as pdf's. You could read through an adventure like The Rod of 7 Parts if you want to know the story.

      This video is for non players. If you are going to make a video about this guy, the most impressive thing you can show is all of his stuff. You can't replicate the spirit of the game in 3 minutes.

      A few friends who I've known all my life. It went from about 10 people, but eventually a lot of them moved or went to school far away, so now I'm left with about 2 players who play regularly, but when any of the others come back we include them for a one shot. Same world, same campaign and most of them use their old characters that I have on file.

    • @Bongwyre2112
      @Bongwyre2112 7 лет назад +6

      Keeping people together is hard, I mean people have lives and they tend to move get married or go to school far away. Basically as long as the Dungeon Master keeps things going and there are a few who still have interest in playing it isn't hard to keep it going. Fortunatly I had a lot of players come and go, and was able to hold onto about 2 players who play regularly, but like I said before when the others come back to town on vacation or visiting I include them and bring back their characters.

      1997 is pretty long. Most of my players have a few characters that old. My only character I ever played regularly started out in 1981 and now she's an NPC that I use in the campaign. Hold onto that character! Old characters are rare these days. It seems like everyone wants to just make new characters all the time. I don't get it.

It had no less than three custom languages that the players would learn over time, ancient artifacts, hidden rooms, completely custom characters, a map the took up several giant tables, and it took me around a year and a half of working on it four 4 hours a weekend. Some time during the mid-summer me and my friends finally got together to play through it, and it took us until December, averaging a single session a week.

    Me and my pals from across the world from America and England have an ongoing dnd session that’s been running every Friday for two years. We don’t have any plans to stop anytime soon either. Can’t seem to get enough of it myself in all honesty, it’s a great time. Good way to gather everyone up and have a great time.

    A message to the jerks who call these people nerds or idiots. Dungeons and dragons is a hobby game that take a special kind of skill to grasp, being patient, listening and being creative are some of the skills involved in a game. I'm not saying you should switch your skills or hobbys, but i can think of a solid one you should probably drop. (*wink wink*)

      TREKXED nah that game is still for idiots. Every sport involves being patient, listening, and being creative. And in most sports you also have to be strong, fast, agile, have a good iq for the sport so can make good plays, be cooperative, competitive, and way more. Why don’t you just go outside instead idiot

      Look, I like D&D too, but it really doesn't require any special skills. "Being patient and listening?" You mean, the things almost every hobby shares in common? And being creative isn't a special skill either. Every artistically inclined hobby needs creativity, and even then, other hobbies require their own brand of creativity as well.

      I love role playing and have played sine 1990 with the red box set and then graduated to advanced DnD then 2nd edition. Then I played with a group that used the GURPS system and holy crap, the DnD system is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO inferior.

    • @littlespac4501
      @littlespac4501 7 лет назад

      GURPS? Whats that, a different game to dnd, or a different system set in the dnd universe?

    • @barryswedlow4214
      @barryswedlow4214 7 лет назад

      It is a different system to play in any gaming world. It stands for Generic Universal Role Playing System and the 4th edition rules are really good for just about any game you want to play. I have used the system to play gritty, realistic games set in tghe middle ages and dark ages. Historical settings are perfect because of the amazingly researched supplements including Rome, Egypt, Greece, Japan, Vikings, Ice Age and SOOOO many more. These supplements are all 3rd edition but their information is easily used in 4th edition and makes good reading even if you don't use the GURPS system at all. Their WWII series of supplements is a real master piece of research and very interesting. In these supplements they give information on how to run hyper realistic games in these settings and also how to change things to add elements of super natural in their games from psiu, to magic, to cthulhu type creep ness and even how to meld games like a Cyberpunk/WWII cross over where maybe the Nazi's win and now in the year 2050 they are the dominant corp run gov't. Stuff like this easily works in GURPS.
      I have also played high fantasy in setting like forgotten realms, Golarion, Lord of the Rings, Dark Sun, Planescape and several others.
      I have played sci fi games in the Shadowrun setting, Fallout setting, Star Wars, Star Trek, and GURPS even makes its own sci fi setting called Infinite Worlds where you can play characters that move through dimensions to alternate earth timelines and play in different times from pre-history to Star Trek far future and everything in between.
      GURPS is a system that allows you to play seamlessly in all of these settings using one rule system. I will admit that there is a TON of stuff to learn but once you are in it and using it, it is a great system.
      My only issue has been in really high powered supers type games. Playing Avenger like characters can be done but at those power levels play becomes difficult.

    I can't tell anyone how it feels to play your first game of dungeons and dragons *BECAUSE IT IS THE MOST GREATEST AND FUN GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED*. hands down it's mechanics and the ability of anyone and everyone to do anything everything felt like i was playing a amazing game. not only that but it takes imagination once you get that you and your friends your playing with will never leave the table or campaign until it's done.
    When i was in highschool me my friends Bernie and bryan was always creating make shift fantasy,sci-fi,any kind type and setting of a story we could think of and put it together. it was only until my teacher at the time *Mr Reyes* saw what we where doing and told us-
    "do you want to play dungeons and dragons?you might like it."
    not a day goes by that i regret saying yes and playing 3 hours straight of pure fun. i was a dwarf with a musket bernie was a paladin(a fat one lol)and bryan was a cleric we went on adventures in tombs and dungeons and along the way we played with more people and got our friends in it to. and i remember one time i "borrowed" the rule book and dungeons and dragons how to create a campaign guide i spent all night and even after classes reading about this to the point where mr reyes found out and asked for it back(lmfao i still remember not giving it back the day after) it was truly remarkable to me because although me and my friends can possibly play differently, the way dungeons and dragons mechanics,dices,rules heck there's a guide and way to do everything that will give a full smooth fun gameplay without having to memorize an section of the rule book unless you really need to.
    Till this day when i reunite with my friends in the future after my studies we are gonna buy some figures maps(we can make it ourselves if we want) and the books needed and we will play our campaign because dungeons and dragons is more about dungeons and dragons its about the adventures you and your fellow adventurers have.

      With all the stuff fans send CR I wouldn't be surprised if Matt's collection became larger than this fella's.

    This is actually beautiful, I think I'm crying a bit. I dm my own game and I have a decent dice collection but this is much more practical. And if robert ever asked me to skype in for a game one day, I would say yes right away...
