I immediately came back here after reading an article about a cycad found in Masungi Georeserve in the Philippines. I’m so proud for my country having a tree that is at least a piece of the past.
"In the meantime, he'll have me to keep him company...." Tree: "I appreciate the offer mate, I really do - but I don't swing that way. I'm flattered though."
James Tredinnick as stated in the video, this one is a male and it needs a female. if you cloned it or made cuttings. the trees that grow from it will still be male
@@vinala67 : The closest relative is so different that they may as well just try cloning. Edit: Actually, the Wikipedia page suggests it may just be a mutant of another species. Apparently someone checked the genetics.
Colonialism was bad but we should not conflate colonialism with the the movement of ornamental and food plants by humans from one place to another, a foundational activity that typifies virtually every human civilisation. There are excess and abuses for sure, but the propagation and distribution of plant material by humans should not be pathologised; the world we know today would be unimaginable without this essential human impulse.
Learning about trees and plants is really interesting. After you learn about all your local species, once in a while you find something youve never seen before in a local forest and you can appreciate the rarity of a plant by itself where no others grow and wonder how it got there. Did some bird travel 1000 miles and poop a seed or is it a plant that grows only in the most niche of conditions, or did some settler plant a small garden 200 years ago with seeds he brought from another continent?
Hey Mr Bruh here to explain why this is in your recommendations. You see if you even watched one great big story video and liked it, RUclips will recommend more. Or say if you like trees, or around the time this comment was made it was during the team trees fundraiser, that could be another reason why RUclips recommend it to you.
That botanist is a lovely gentleman, I never thought I would feel sad for a tree being lonely but I'm genuinely glad the tree has such a kind and dedicated friend 💚
My mum's house in South Africa still has three healthy cycads, and several others in varying stages of wild growth - so I'm assuming this is a special variant talked about in this video. They're quite the menace to maintain if you want a good looking garden. There was lots of trimming off of long dead leaves in favour of the living ones, and the prickles/teeth on the leaflets are not at all kind to bare skin. Was surprised to hear animals loved to perch on top of them
@@michaelFoucheGodIsGood They are only genetic clones of the plant. This plant is Extinct IN THE WILD because there are no REAL NATURAL types of this plant left.
As if the whole rainforest burned down. The fires have been going for 10 years, it was just a big increase on the rate the affected areas are burned. Also don't forget that the majority of the fire is set to make room more farms, the same farms who export large quantities of food to other countries. Next time you feel hungry for some vegetables or cereal, remember that you help with it.
So, I just did some googling : E. Woodii is just one species of Encephalartos. There are many other Encephalartos trees that are not threatened in the wild. It has even made fertile hybrids with one of them, E. Natalensis, which brings hope to enable making female specimens by a technique called "backcrossing". In fact, some even consider E. Woodii not to really be an individual species, but more of a mutant E. Natalensis : there's about as much genetic variation between the E. Woodii specimen and E. Natalensis specimens as there is within E. Natalensis trees. They haven't really evolutionarily diverged. And it can also reproduce asexually by emitting basal shoots, which is why there are now many identical trees in various botanical gardens. So, that tree is pretty lonely, but not THAT lonely. And it isn't *the* last survivor of the trees that constituted the bulk of the dinosaur's flora, since that would also apply to the other species of Encephalartos trees, which, again, are thriving. It's a really interesting curiosity that they found a single tree that was the only member of its species, but they kind of blew it out of proportions in that video... I mean, if all those trees had disappeared within the last 65 million years, how likely would it be that THE last specimen would be alive within our time?
Certainly E. woodii can be cloned (and has been). What makes the particular specimen in the video unique is it is the only one from the original clump discovered by John Medley Wood that is still alive today. In other words it is the only one to have grown up in the wild. Back crossing could be used to get verrrrry close to a female E. woodii, but it wouldn't be 100% pure. If the one at Kew Gardens died the species would still exist, but the last wild survivor of the species would be lost, which would be sad. Plus it's a cute story :)
***** What I mean is there is no way to genetically manipulate a female out of the genetic information they have or that there is no current means of doing such?
This tree in Kew Gardens is NOT the original Woods cycad that was found. This is a cutting from that tree. The original tree was moved to the Durban Botanical Gardens in South Africa where it’s now grown to the size of a palm tree and grows alongside at least five other Woods cycads that, like the Kew Gardens one, are cuttings of the original tree.

Wood collected three offsets and some original stems and left two originals. One of which was in bad shape and didn’t survive. Well the other was collected and sent to a garden where it subsequently died. So there are no known E. Woodii’s in the wild.
As I write this comment, it is January 10th 2021. I came to this video immediately after I read an article of this Cycad tree is now reappearing, the rise in global temperature is thought to be the cause of the sudden appearance. *This tree must be like* : I used to rule the world,I saw dinosaurs evolving and dying then you guys came and beat the crap of my boys, I am still alive just so I can see you guys extinct too
@@cascafrombeserk493 because humans are not going to be extinct anytime soon, maybe mass destruction but not extinction perhaps. With the innovations of Quantum Physics and modern technologies, we are looking at a future of rationality and progress, rather than primitive beliefs and principles.
"then you guys came and beat the crap of my boys" ... uhm ... you do realize that this type of tree was simply replaced by more modern type of trees and not through (human) deforestation?
The video gives the impression that there is only 1 in existence. _Encephalartos Woodii_ is very rare, but not that rare. There are around 110 male clone plants in botanical gardens and private collections around the world, grown from the original E.woodii.
By classes, actually - I'm a biologist. But I can try to find some reference in books if will want to read about it =) I'm sure you can find info about it on "Biology of Plants" by Peter H. Raven, for instance. But pdfs might be hard to find
It said so in the video. Woodi took a small portion of the tree and grew it in London. So isn't that how you make another tree? Why would it need a female? Weird. But hey "In the meantime, it'll have me to keep him company." Now that's a love story there. The end.
Aydinarium it wouldn't really matter, because they would be genetically the same, it would be incredibly easy for a disease to wipe them all out by moving from tree to tree. Better just to maintain one and keep it safe with back up cuttings used as a last resort.
Apparently this tree is not so rare anymore. I shared the video and a botanist friend of mine said he's seen several. Ironically because of all the interest so many copies have been grown from cuttings that there are estimated to be more than 500 adult copies. Can pick one up from nurseries for $800. Collectors hope that one day one may change sex, something that is rumoured to happen in cycads.
There are actually four left. My father, being an exotic plant trader, placed one of them in the San Diego zoo. Right above the “Africa Rocks” sign. It’s still there today
I only clicked the video to see "How a tree could ACTUALLY be lonely." Because this lonely person is watching a video about a lonely tree.... I'm such a loner.

This truly made me sad. I’m hoping there will be another female tree out there!
To plant seeds into her
What
Child: “Mommy, how are baby trees born?”
Mommy: “well you see...there’s a something called Dioecious-when a male tree & a female tre...”
Daddy: “uh uh, that’s enough honey”
*This tree must be like* : I used to rule the world,I saw dinosaurs evolving and dying then you guys came and beat the crap of my boys, I am still alive just so I can see you guys extinct too
Damn why is this has less likes
@@cascafrombeserk493 because humans are not going to be extinct anytime soon, maybe mass destruction but not extinction perhaps. With the innovations of Quantum Physics and modern technologies, we are looking at a future of rationality and progress, rather than primitive beliefs and principles.
"then you guys came and beat the crap of my boys" ... uhm ... you do realize that this type of tree was simply replaced by more modern type of trees and not through (human) deforestation?
This tree isn't millions of years old. The species is.
Kinda cringe ngl
maybe the female is under water living in a pineapple
Nope
S.Pineapple? I dont think so?
100 subscriber with no video I got the joke
stfu
Spongebob?
I wonder if he mates with another tree he wakes up with morning wood
That's not how most people consume coffee, but okay.
AssasinDG .....hahahaha awesome comment
Thank you.
KingCobra 8 ?
I just choked on rice while reading this
The video gives the impression that there is only 1 in existence. _Encephalartos Woodii_ is very rare, but not that rare. There are around 110 male clone plants in botanical gardens and private collections around the world, grown from the original E.woodii.
Dating description: Male with excellent wood. One of its kind!
This plant has been single for over a million years
damn i felt that
If i was a tree i'll leaf
@@Burnwell1on1 nc 😂
Plz no
@@Dylanfrias24 u felt the tree
Who want to hug this tree? 😢
Tree hugger.. every hippie possible... but try to.. tho
And this is one is for empathy of being lonely
Story of my life
This showed up in my recommendations. I feel a little attacked...
Kindergarten teacher: Now imaging yourself as a tree, growing slowly, but surely....
Me:
*This is the loneliest tree in the world*
This comment is pure gold
dang. even in kinder it was hard for you to make friends?
I'd really like to count the rings inside the trunk after it dies
That tree is long outliving you lol
Geometry Dash Hectic I'm the farmer of all farts and all shall perish before me my child.
Unfortunately that won't hork in Cycadophyta, as their vascular tissue is not organized in the same way of an angiosperm. =/
By classes, actually - I'm a biologist. But I can try to find some reference in books if will want to read about it =)
I'm sure you can find info about it on "Biology of Plants" by Peter H. Raven, for instance. But pdfs might be hard to find
I hope it never dies lol
Oh god somebody pls pls find a female plant for the lonely tree I sincerely want E. woodii to survive 🙏
why don't you do something about it
I've been searching on the beaches on summer, I only see coconut trees and a very weird acacia tree a few years ago
Yes, it was acacia
i believe they have grafted many clones from this tree, so it's kind of got a chance even though a female tree hasn't been found yet.
Here is the video of female plant
Check this out 😱😱 ruclips.net/video/QYWkQM4uBD4/видео.html
I hope that one day, we can genetically recreate a female partner for him
With no female, it would be impossible to create one, because we literally have no reference for its genetics.
i think they breeded it with a different cycad species a couple times but those are hybrids
It said so in the video. Woodi took a small portion of the tree and grew it in London. So isn't that how you make another tree? Why would it need a female? Weird.
But hey "In the meantime, it'll have me to keep him company."
Now that's a love story there. The end.
omgggggggg you just blew my mind
Most plants can be propagated from cuttings, however to actually produce a new individual, rather than a clone, requires sexual reproduction
It's still better to have a clone than let it die out, isn't it?
That tree took social distancing to the next level
ayo... sus?!?
Great Big Story: Loneliest Tree
Bob Ross: Hold my Painting.
Nice
There are actually four left. My father, being an exotic plant trader, placed one of them in the San Diego zoo. Right above the “Africa Rocks” sign.
It’s still there today
nope. still only one left. all the others are clones of the original
I only clicked the video to see
"How a tree could ACTUALLY be lonely."
Because this lonely person is watching a video about a lonely tree....
I'm such a loner.
Kat LOLOLOLOL Not surprised you're a loner. You play roblox
Op Dragon2
So, if I have a roblox profile pic. It means I play roblox? Bitch please, you probably live your life hating on roblox because you know the character.
“He’ll have me to keep him company...”
Is it getting hot in here?
Anybody else catch the adorable phallic imagery of including a tiny little plant on the ground next to the male tree at 2:07 ?
Also, I’m sure if you offered some type of reward for anyone finding a female tree you’d find one within a week.
So loved for the style of this film, thank you for this
A tourist is going to kill that tomorrow.
Hey, that tourist needs to get a good selfie, so of course he's gonna climb it.

Me after meeting this tree “you and I aren’t so different.”
I love the respect some people have for plants, keeping the old lonely boy alive and well for over 100 years, that’s care for ya
CLONE IT!
UltraGamer 49 it has been cloned and every clone is also male.
Randy Oyet can’t they make it transgender?
ll Dark Lxrd ll no, because it doesn't have an option. It's a tree.
UltraGamer 49 then turn it into a female
Thinking Annoymous *gasp!* did you just assume it's gender lol jk
Im so overjoyed by the subtle sounds of the character they made of the Cycad..the sighs, reactions, humming...its so cute
