Aiden I was a last minute dm the night before and I’ve been dming for over 10 years. No worries I felt overwhelmed at first at well. Maybe we’ll catch one another on the battlefield again next year!
My table didn’t have a healer, so our strategy was “kill things before they can kill us” the only person to go down was the person who originally brought up the idea
Additionally, despite having a fully part of 5, having really great rolls, and even a level 6 party member (who had participated on friday as well, along with being in the previous event) we didn’t manage to get off the airship deck either, and also only dealt about 30 damage to aos
Yeah I know, if I had been aware ahead of time of how little time I'd have, I probably would have just had my party go straight down to the reactor room. There's a lot of things I would have done differently If I knew in advance but at the end of the day it was still a ton of fun

Advice for any DMs still trying to figure out how to balance effective persuaders in the party: assign leverage that needs to be acquired before players can make important Persuasion checks. Some NPCs can start off already pliable with a Persuasion check while more important ones will require a quest like stealing an item, doing a favor, discovering what they care about, or fighting something before they can be persuaded.
That's actually a really good tip! I think I will definitely use that in the future. Because I hate the idea that you can convince anyone of anything with a high enough roll. I think additional merit should absolutely be needed. Thanks for the suggestion!
This kind of advice is actually in the 5e DM guide! NPCs should have various temperaments and I think the book suggests 3 broad ones: Hostile, Neutral, and Friendly. Social checks help players move into the friendly territory, but things like personality, goals, and information all should play a role in how the party succeeds or fails in diplomacy or roleplay, and encounters really shouldn’t see you jumping too far up without due cause.

Question for a wizards of the coast dms? I understand only so many people are allowed to play "rare races" is this true for certain subclasses as well?
I'm not sure what the majority of DM's allow, but for me it's never been a huge issue. As long as the subclass or race is detailed and fits into gameplay without much disruption, confusion, or game-breaking mechanics, then it's usually fine.
I would be happy to! If you want to read the full breakdown, I included his character sheet at 10:49 But he basically had these two disc weapons called "Chakram" that he could throw around himself in a circle that could damage anyone in range. Once he lost half health he became erratic and was capable of hurting himself on accident. He was immune to anything that could grapple him or prevent him from leaving battle. And he had a lot of abilities that required players to make high DC saving throws or become charmed/prone. His AC wasn't high enough that it was hard to land hits but he was extremely dangerous if he targeted onto one character. In all honesty I didn't get to try out all his moves since the fight was pretty fast paced, but he was a monster to handle to be sure.

Yeah, that could have helped a ton. It was pretty confusing to know who to talk to, or even where to check in. I waited in line at the store at first because I didn't know they had a separate check-in desk downstairs
Maybe they didn't? I'm being told that critical fails are only for combat, which I never knew. Not that I usually employ harsh critical fails. I think all it does is punish players who make multiple attack rolls per turn. I think rolling a one should always be a fail, but that doesn't mean that you accidentally drop your sword on your foot or something.
I’m not sure, I’m unfamiliar with it. Though I believe this event holds the record for in-person players. Twilight realms sounds like it might be an ongoing online campaign
To deal with a bard with high af charisma put them in situations that they can talk down from but not out of. IE they stole a dragons treasure but get caught, then bard attempts to talk their way out, instead of immediately being killed the best outcome for a high roll would be the dragon likes the bards moxie, and so rather then kill them they put them in a cage and add them to their treasure horde as the dragons new music box
@aidanpocock pretty solid, just saw this video out of no where. Felt I had to say something. Cool to see yall still playing some D&D and was insane seeing that old picture of all yall.
@@BridgerBurt I know hahaha it’s crazy to think that photo is seven years old at this point. It definitely takes me back hahaha. Great hearing from you man! I’m glad you’re doing good!
Why wouldn’t they just give the DMs walkie talkies or something instead of relying on the PA system🤦♂️😭 without better communication between groups it’s not even “technically part of the same campaign at the same time anymore”, which was already a cop out for the claim that these thousand plus players are playing together 🙄 Still a fun convention tho, I’d sure as hell go 😊
I think what they should have done was make the generals more involved. For the most part they only came around to check on your table if you raised an indicator card. But I think it could have been beneficial for them to have all of them go table to table after an announcement to make sure their troops are up to speed.
6:52 There's no such thing (RAW) as a critical fail or success on skill checks; a lvl 3 eloquence bard can't roll lower than ~18 on a deception or persuasion check (the only skills that their subclass feature actually affects)
With the charisma issue, make a character who doesn't speak common or is deaf, and therefore cant be reasoned with, making charisma useless against him

That’s actually a really creative idea! I’ll have to try out something like that sometime!
Critical fails are only for attack rolls 😭 not skill checks
That's what I heard someone in the comments said, that's good to know! I had no idea
@@aidanpocockit’s very common homebrew to use them for both tbf
Hey really nice story.
Ps : some of your friends have eyes I could loose some wisdom to.
Oh I totally know! Which one though? I can't decide myself
I really need to know who you’re talking about. This has been keeping me up at night
What the Hell, I went to high school with this guy. Super dope guy.
The guy running the event? Or me? lmao
@aidanpocock You! Disregard the username I made in Elementary. It's Bridger.
@@BridgerBurt Yooooo! Bridger what's up dude?? How's life been?
@aidanpocock pretty solid, just saw this video out of no where. Felt I had to say something. Cool to see yall still playing some D&D and was insane seeing that old picture of all yall.
@@BridgerBurt I know hahaha it’s crazy to think that photo is seven years old at this point. It definitely takes me back hahaha. Great hearing from you man! I’m glad you’re doing good!
I'd hate to dm this
That must have been the most obnoxious and loudest "I have darkvision" in the world
Fortunately it was split up into tables of 5 so everyone got a chance to play. But yeah, it was still pretty hectic hahaha
Why wouldn’t they just give the DMs walkie talkies or something instead of relying on the PA system🤦♂️😭 without better communication between groups it’s not even “technically part of the same campaign at the same time anymore”, which was already a cop out for the claim that these thousand plus players are playing together 🙄
Still a fun convention tho, I’d sure as hell go 😊
I think what they should have done was make the generals more involved. For the most part they only came around to check on your table if you raised an indicator card. But I think it could have been beneficial for them to have all of them go table to table after an announcement to make sure their troops are up to speed.
what animation is that at the 9:52 mark?
It’s from a trailer for an Elder Scrolls online expansion if I remember correctly
@@Theangryhermit 🫡
Yeah, it was from the High Isle launch cinematic from Elder Scrolls online
6:52 There's no such thing (RAW) as a critical fail or success on skill checks; a lvl 3 eloquence bard can't roll lower than ~18 on a deception or persuasion check (the only skills that their subclass feature actually affects)
gm?
Some people use it instead of dm, it stands for Game Moderator I believe. Unless you’re asking about something else
kekw guiness world records
With the charisma issue, make a character who doesn't speak common or is deaf, and therefore cant be reasoned with, making charisma useless against him
That’s so devious, I love it hahaha
Definitely using that in the future
This seem stupid... Game about nothing.
One could argue that it’s a game about everything. Though, I understand that it isn’t for everyone
