Rings of Power Season 2 DISCUSSION: Episode 8, Shadow and Flame
We have come to it at last, the finale of Season 2, what an absolute adventure this has been, both in experiencing the season, making these discussion videos each week, and getting to meet so many more Tolkien fans along the way. I extend my utmost gratitude to everyone who has accompanied me on this journey so far. And even though the season has ended, the age of breakdowns and speculations have just begun.
During this episode we we're treated to every single plotline from this season, and though it felt a tad rushed, I feel like we got a satisfying conclusion to each one, which is very impressive. First off we delve into Khazad-Dum where Prince Durin makes one final effort to save his fa...

    Time flows differently for each group of characters, the dialog swings between bad and cringe, and all the scenes are done as cliffhangers to artificially increase suspense. Without bringing up the original works and rating it on its own merit, it is not good. They did this show as badly as they did The Wheel of Time show.

    Just wait until they reveal Adar is Celeborn. It’s why he knows the name of Elronds mother, and when Elrond retorts “you’ve never seen me use a pen or a sword” he’s wrong on both accounts Celeborn has seen him do both. Her ring Nenya has already been shown to have healing powers and will probably revive him to his original form freeing the orcs to join Sauron

    • @aidanpocock
      @aidanpocock 5 дней назад

      I’ve seen some people throw around this theory, and while I think it’s fun, I personally see no way that it happens. Adar being Celeborn makes no sense on so many levels. And I think a lot of the theorizing stems from the fact that so many of us are frustrated that the show has given no hint whatsoever as to what happened with Celeborn. I’m honestly really worried for how they’re going to handle it

  • @mliem

    15:05 the kiss. I understand the uproar but I don't think it's all that big a deal. Elrond had asked for her forgiveness in advance. Galadriel's surprised look was her saying "oh, you meant for THAT?" I think it will be a one-time thing only, there was no romance behind it, both of them were selling the distraction on purpose, there will be no mention of it again within the story. Or, maybe there will be a scene, before he and Celebrian get married, in which he and Galadriel tell her about it before the wedding. Celebrian might be shocked at first, and then cracks up laughing. It becomes a running joke within the family ever after, although maybe Arwen doesn't need to be in on it. "What are you laughing about?" "Oh just grown up stuff, ask us when you get older...." "But I'm over a thousand years old!" etc.

    4:02 good point. The Ring of Durin will be passed down all the way to Thrain son of Thror, from whom it will be seized at Dol Guldur. Maybe it's the curse that causes it to remain as an heirloom and makes it so hard for anyone to get rid of it? Durin IV swore an oath to Disa in a previous episode never to wear the ring, but he never promised to get rid of it.

    • @aidanpocock
      @aidanpocock 5 дней назад

      Honestly, I don’t think I’d struggle too much if the show implies that the ring is locked in a chest and kept in the horde, being passed down and guarded from generation to generation. But not used. Since rings of power are incredibly hard to destroy. It might make sense for them to take up the task of safeguarding it. And maybe by the time of Thrain they’ve forgotten the warnings and start using it again. Which attracts Smaug. The more I think about it, the more scenarios I can imagine, it’s just a question of how the show will respond to it.

    This was the worst episode of the season in my opinion, and I'm writing this as someone who sees myself as a huge fan of the Rings of Power. The kiss was strange and unnecessary (a hug and whispering something in Elvish into each other's ears would have been enough, it would have played exactly the same role and not left a bad taste). It was difficult to figure out the battle, what was happening where, what the scale was and - typical of this series - what the time of the presented events was. While after all the previous episodes of this season I was terribly excited and pumped up, after this one I felt rather confused. Many things were also strangely accelerated, I had the impression that I had lost an episode along the way, so that the picture of the situation would be complete and not based on speculation. But regardless, as you said, everything is prepared for the finale. My predictions are as follows: Celebrimbor dead, Adar killed, Pharazon will force Miriel to marry, the Stranger will not be Gandalf and season 3 will show how Sauron corrupts people - in the first season they put the emphasis on Galadriel, and in the second on Celebrimbor, the third must be sacrificed to people.

      @aidanpocock 5 дней назад

      I largely agree with a lot of the points you brought up, but with many things, I think it largely depends on how much leniency you allow while watching. During my first viewing I really loved everything about it. And it wasn’t until I did my second watch that I started scrutinizing things like the battle tactics a lot more, and realizing many aspects didn’t add up. So while I think you’re right, I also hold that I was able to suspend my personal disbelief to simply wholeheartedly enjoy it the first time. The kiss though, I feel the same. It definitely took me out of it the first time around and I let out an audible groan as the premonition of a thousand different grifter thumbnails featuring the kiss floated through my head. I definitely didn’t see it as romantic, but I also definitely didn’t see it as necessary

    Agree good episode and needed 6 episodes to lead up to this. Greatly interested to see what can be squeezed into episode 8 to provide a fitting finale to this season. Deciding to give Galadriel the 9 rings when "we know" these end up with the wraiths sets up Galadriel for "another" failure !!! Being OLD and one who first read Tolkien in the 1960s (starting with the Hobbit as a school book) and has read, listened to and watch just about everything Tolkien since then I am not remotely bothered by stories being told in this series. I fully understand that the showrunners were limited by the rights they could not use. I simply accept what I see in each episode without expectations -- judging each on whether or not I was entertained and want to watch more or NOT. Unlike some recent Dis / Marv / StarWars series each episode in the LOR ROP series so far have left me wanting to see more.

    • @aidanpocock

      Exactly, I think the most important aspect is whether or not we’re getting a good story. And while that might be subjective depending on who you are. By this point in the series I am enthralled by the tale and actively invested and eager to see what happens next. I know I’m also not the only one who feels that way, so I’d consider it a success.

    when i watched that kiss scene is was like "Ohhhh shit the fans are gonna be seething after this" but then they pulled the fakeout and showed that it was just to give him the cloak pin and i breathed a sigh of relief. That's the kind of subversion of expectations i like to see (considering the Galadriel/Halbrand scenes from last season, you'd probably expect this show to pull a thing like that). Have us all have a collective heart attack over something noncanon and then pull a "jk it was all a ruse" was actually genius. The episode was fantastic. The visuals were better than most movies nowadays, i can see they spent every cent making those battle scenes look the best they possibly could. Charles Edwards and Charlie Vickers however continue to be the highlight of the season. The groundhog day loop trick was amazing. I love how you realize alongside Celebrimbor how he's been stuck in a loop. I loved how cruel Sauron has been all season long. I also loved how much the battle mirrored Helm's Deep, yet with such a different ending. I can see the consequences of Durin standing Elrond up reverberating for a long time, probably for the rest of the show, at least until the War of the Last Alliance.

    • @aidanpocock
      @aidanpocock 5 дней назад

      Yeah, I think to most people it’s super obvious that the kiss was a ruse and nothing romantic. There’s even a quote from Robert Aramayo that just came out where he absolutely denied any romantic interpretation. However, it hasn’t prevented people from using this scene to complain about the show. Even RoP fans are going after eachother about it, it’s a real shame to see. But I agree, the two Charlie’s have been carrying this season on its back. The Celebrimbor/Annatar storylines was their first big opportunity to show how they’d handle these big lore moments and in my opinion they’ve completely nailed it. Which makes the other shortcomings of the season feel insignificant. Even my concerns about the rings being forged out of order have been assuaged. I feel like it makes total sense for the story they’re telling

    • @mygetawayart
      @mygetawayart 5 дней назад

      @@aidanpocock There's a loud subset of people who will always find things to complain about with regards to this show. Comes with the territory of having to adapt Tolkien, i guess. Not that there isn't valid criticism to be leveraged against this show, but some people take it way too far and make this show to be far worse than it actually is. Probably the most dishonest criticism against it is the one regarding the visuals and effects, because lord knows you can count on one hand shows that look this good. Say what you will about the writing and some questionable intentional lore changes, but it's undeniable that the artistry and talent behind this show is ALWAYS (and in this latest episode more than most others) on full display. To call the work of the art department "trash" is inauthentic, unbelievable and dishonest.

Good for you for not feeding the RUclips algorithm with more malice. I can’t even look up Rings of Power without RUclips recommending me more distasteful negative videos about it. I think everyone’s opinion is valid, whether you like something or don’t, but to name-call, disregard people’s opinions for having opposing views as trash, or saying “I know more lore than you therefore my opinion is right and yours isn’t” is the most immature thing I have ever seen. But I think it’s so important to spread positivity and not cruelty. Thank you so much for watching! And I agree, there are aspects of season one that I’ve warmed up to even more so now since making this video. Season two has really brought to light the fact that for me I genuinely do enjoy and love this show. And moving forward I’m going to unabashedly recommend it. There will always continue to be things I struggle with, but that is just a byproduct of the fact that everyone is free to interpret and enjoy things in their own way. I love the show, it like an early underdeveloped middle-earth, how it's supposed to be. People expect the show to have the characters just like they are in the third age, when thousands of years before things and people were different. All in all, considering the right Amazon did have, the estate certainly gave them the lore, and she have done a good adaption. The humans were like romans thousands of years before, the hobbit like neanderthals. And before Elves had good footing in middle-earth they were struggling, it makes sense. And considering Sauron was a fallen angel he is bound to be fair, not just a 'medieval transformer.' Thank you for not falling into the youtube echochamber.

      The fact that so many people are unwilling to accept character arcs really boggles my mind. Especially on the Galadriel front. In my opinion RoP is exploring more about her character than PJ’s films ever did. And even when the showrunners do fabricate something, they try to base it off of writings from the books. Like I recently read about how they based her entire dynamic with Sauron off of a line from “the Mirror of Galadriel” where she alludes to some close connection to Sauron. And I just find that fascinating and telling of their commitment to analyzing the text (a feat they continue to not receive fair credit for) I’m glad you enjoyed the video! And i’ll continue to try my best to cultivate a space for positive constructive feedback without feeding into shameless grifting tactics. Ironically, the title highlights a scene that captures the quality of writing of this show. Adar sends the elves a body carved up with the words "where is he?" 1. Why is adar asking "where" now, after already leading an army "here"? 2. Is sauron necessarily a "he"? Did the mud monster have little muddy male parts? 3. Adar is sending a message on a carved up messenger. Is he expecting the elves to send an answer by messenger, that adar can also kill to carve up with "got it - ty!"? Or is he just alerting his enemies to an imminent attack -again- costing more orc "children " lives for no reason. That's just the 30 seconds pointed at by the title, and the elf stuff is the only recognizable story at this point, everything else is just meandering random action. Oh well.

    • @aidanpocock
      @aidanpocock 12 дней назад

      I think there are answers for all those questions to be fair. 1. Adar doesn’t know exactly who or where Sauron is. As seen in the episode he needs Galadriel to confirm his Halbrand theory, since he isn’t sure. And just because he knows he’s in the city, doesn’t narrow down the “where” it’s a big city. You can struggle to find someone in a big city 2. Regardless of if you assume the gender fluidity of Maiar, Sauron is clearly male presenting. That seems like a really odd critique to make. 3. I don’t think Adar is worried about the elves being aware. He has a powerful, intimidating force, as we’ll see in the next episode the elves of Eregion will be helpless without outside aid. The message is meant to be sent as intimidation to Sauron. As it appears to be written in some dialect of black speech that only he would be able to read anyway. And also, it could be that the orcs wrote the message, and not Adar. I think there are lots of possibilities. Lastly, the Numenor and Khazad-Dum storylines are fairly recognizable if not based on writings from the lore. Showing the corruption of greed from the dwarven rings, and showing the way that the faithful are slowly oppressed in Numenor by Pharazon is absolutely recognizable to the lore. They’re playing around with things, but they have to if they wanted to adapt a storyline we only have bullet points for. And a 3,000+ year timeline. So I understand why they’ve made changes. You need to for an adaptation. Some of the non canon storylines are pretty clearly filler. But I think now that the shows getting into the meat and potatoes of the story, it’s a lot stronger than season one was. I wish more people would give it a shot

Do tolkeins elves get scared, particularly the elder ones who walked among the valar? From a birds eye view, this production presents Tolkeins second age as though Alfred the great defeated napoleon at waterloo, and Einstein invented the printing press. Making a chop suey in which isildur is running around before the rings are a twinkle in creepy uncle celebrimbor's eye speaks for itself. Representing numenor's 1500 year colonization and spread across the continent with two ships containing 300 horses galloping to a particular spot in a land the size of Iowa- come on, now, your suspension of belief must have a limit, I was out of this story in the first ten minutes when baby galadriel was presented as a violent little snit. Still following it through reports like yours since I've had these stories in the back of my head for over 40 years and feel I have a vested interest even if this is unwatchable, so thank you for that.

      Ugh I know 😂 I had already built out a thumbnail template for the series and I was super annoyed with how this title basically turned my thumbnail into the “Does he Know?” Meme 😂 The only silver lining is that if you clicked on it because of that, maybe it’s coincidentally gave me a better, more engaging thumbnail lol.

    Galadriel said Sauron promised her an army but that's lying right? She was the one to procure an army, he proposed she'd be his queen. Very interesting that she doesn't want to share that with Adar. Speaking of, are we leading to a tragedy where the thing Adar desires the most (children) is what destroys him (them switching allegiance to Sauron)? Enjoyed your review, keep it up!

    • @aidanpocock
      @aidanpocock 13 дней назад

      I think there may have been a line in the season one finale where he promised her an army if she joined him. I can’t remember though. And yeah, I think that Adars children will play a role in his downfall, mainly Glûg since they’re building him up as a character who struggles with Adars plan. I don’t think they’ll kill him though, just betray him. I think Sauron will be the one to ultimately kill Adar in the finale. Thanks for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed it!

      I personally don’t have a problem with the way he looks. I think the actor portraying him is doing an excellent job at making me care about his story, and for me that’s all I can ask for. Though, I don’t know we’ve had any indication that he’s weak, and I’m hoping the end of the season will give us an opportunity to see his true strength

    I was convinced the stranger was Gandalf until I saw a video saying he is one of the blue wizards. The dark wizard is the other blue wizard. Now I can't stop thinking they are as one is good and the other created cults of magic. Thoughts?

      Ive heard about this theory! In fact I talk about it a bit at 13:20 in the video! I personally would love it if they went that route, but I’m really unconvinced they will. It seems increasingly obvious they’re going for the Gandalf nostalgia bait tactic

      Ah ok, thank you for letting me know. I was trying to figure out why but I saw a few different accounts. If that is indeed the case then that is devastating. The amount of toxicity, hate, and abuse these actors suffered last season is inexcusable. Disliking a show is one thing, but sending death threats or barraging an actor and their families with an unending spew of racist remarks is so pathetic and disgusting.

    Fantastic breakdown! The Celebrimbor/Annatar storyline is my favorite so far, it's absolutely magnetic to watch! Great to see the gripping interpersonal and celestial drama that Tolkien was so good at without so much orc-decapitation. If it can be said that Jackson's adaptations failed anywhere, it would be in the grotesque and sometimes gratuitous violence scenes for me.

      It’s always funny to me how much people harp on RoP for being un-tolkien and the reasoning they give being it’s too boring, or it spends way too much time focusing on characters and dialogue than on action scenes. And I agree with you, that feels more Tolkien to me.
