I’m personally a much bigger Fantasy fan than I am Sci-Fi. But I think it’s cool

I would like to point out that you're referring to the reboot of Battlestar Galactica, there was a series before that one back in the 1970's.

I think that science fiction should be considered fantasy to some degree. For example, if there are aliens, they could be considered "races" in the same way we consider dwarfs and orcs and Elfs races. Though if science fiction has some sort of magic system, such as the force, it should be considered fantasy. If it occurs in a galaxy far far away, then it should be high fantasy.
I also like Storys with deep lore and vast world building. I share your opinion about swords and stuff. And while I still like guns, medieval weapons rule.

Focusing fully on having its own universe would put Warhammer 40k squarely into the Sci Fi category, since it is set within an alternative future of our own world with 'some' magical elements (like Star Trek). Earth, or Terra, is the center of the Empire of Man and Mars is the Centre of the Adeptus Mechanicus machine cult. A similar case can potentially be made for Star Wars as well, since it is within our universe, but in a distant place (you said its own universe, outside the solar system which are two very different things) and in the distant past. I would argue that the deciding difference (if there even is a need in the first place to disentangle Sci-fi/Sci-Fan/Space Fantasy/ Fantasy) is then not whether the medium has their own universe, but rather the prevalence and importance of the supernatural within the given setting. That then creates interesting discussions around psionics or biotics (Mass Effect), which fill the position and role of magic but are excused through advanced technology.

That is interesting, I didn't know that about Warhammer, but that sounds super cool. I agree that I probably should have done. a better job at focusing on the magic elements rather than whether or not it's set in our universe.

    Isn't it a sci-fi space opera?

I think all space opera is sci-fi but not all sci-fi is inherently space opera

SF is "possible" (even if unlikely) and Fantasy is "impossible". Science Fantasy (I prefer that term) is science-y but impossible.

You could say Science Fiction pretends to be possible, whereas Fantasy (and thus Science Fantasy) takes to magic. Then the differentiation between hard and soft science fiction would spring from the amount of handwaving made in the explanations of the Sci-Fi elements.

I really like that, I think that's a great way of explaining it!
