- As #Mazda continues to pursue its push toward being considered more of a premium brand, the 2024 #MazdaCX90 is built to represent that change in its purest form. The #CX90 is a direct replacement for the old #MazdaCX9 and with it, the electrification era begins for Mazda. The #CX90PHEV is also the brands first-ever plug-in hybrid, while the #CX90Turbo and #CX90TurboS are the turbocharged I-6 cylinder engine from Japan that enthusiasts have been waiting for.

Good morning guys! Welcome to video 2 of 4 that will be posting this week from our drives last week! We're also leaving for the New York Auto Show tomorrow, so stay tuned for a bunch of coverage at the show as well later this week! We also want to apologize for this video being roughly twice the length of our usual reviews, we decided to combine both the CX-90 Turbo S and CX-90 PHEV into 1 video! Trying to decide between the two powertrain is probably the hard part since they are both so good, but also so different! Which would you choose?
I appreciate the longer video, as 100% that would be my question drivetrain wise.
Inline 6, no contest. Especially when there's no discernible difference in fuel efficiency.
The number doesn’t add up on PHEV electrical motor 68kw = 91 hp. 323-91 = 232 on ICE? But I thought the ICE is just a regular 2.5 mazda engine
With the PHEV having a heat pump, you can heat/cool the car (or listen to music) with the engine off. Great for waiting in the car in hot summers or cold winters. Also full EV driving in the city. Only problem with it is the unpainted arches and skirts 🤦🏼♂️
You should put it in title, I was looking for the Turbo S version of your review.
Styling is 10 out of 10. Thank you Mazda for painting wheel arches and mirrors, no fake exhaust, rear drive architecture and a new inline 6.
What style? Looks like a 2014 car, doesn't even look futuristic
@@franki3Ru550 You want futuristic? Get the cyber truck!
Bought a "6" back in 2015 and have put around 160K on it since, zero issues, runs amazing, and still is a ton of fun to drive daily. I have a few kids now and will consider the CX-90 for our next family vehicle.
You won't regret it 🚗
I have a CX-5 and also no problems. But the CX-60/70/80/90 is all new...everything. Turbo, AWD, DCT, Inline 6 all new. Unless Mazda can do something no other manufacturer has ever done, there will be bugs
@@clarkkent9080 completely agree. I do not buy new cars anyway, like to buy a year or 2 used to see if their are any issues with the configuration or design.
@@clarkkent9080it’s a wet clutch, not a dct
@@justanotherasian4395 Yes, I found out more information on the new 8 speed Mazda transmission. The Torque converter is replaced with a planetary gear set and a 3 input wet clutch. Wet or dry, it is still a clutch that is a wear item and I suspect is responsible for the jerky starts that so many have reported. Since it replaces a fluid coupling of a torque converter with a clutch, it has the same problems of a DCT
This looks great, and I think the PHEV is a perfect fit for those that don't want a pure EV.
Saw a lot of people here trying to decide between the telluride, Highlander and the CX-90. It’s simple, if interior space is your priority, CX-90 would lose every time, as it was never designed to be a minivan alternative. But if you care about design, craftsmanship, driving dynamics, and how all of them come together as a whole, it would literally be an insult to even compare the CX-90 to the highlander, telluride, or even the MDX. Nobody in their right mind, given they know at least a little bit about cars, would compare a RWD inline-6 turbo setup to a bunch of FWD turbo 4 and V6 cars and ask which is better - they are not even in the same league. Can’t believe we are still having this conversation…
With new everything it will take years to work out all the bugs. That is unless Mazda has done what no other manufacturer has ever done in the past
Oh man that 3.3l Inline 6 sounds so good!
I very like that the CX-90 is not boxy and not rugged. This is not an off-roader.
I really hope Mazda can get this 3.3 inline 6 in a sedan. They patented a RWD Mazda 6 that was supposed to use this engine, but they cancelled the project. I really hope they reconsider that. I'd love to see them being back the 6 to the US with this engine.
I agree, that would be amazing...however the slow death of traditional sedans seem to be a worldwide phenomenon...albeit happening a little bit slower elsewhere than in North America. I'm not optimistic that we will even see a sedan with this engine for any market unfortunately
I thought Mazda co-developed this engine with Toyota for their next-gen Lexus IS/GS?
@@cococly that would be great. I will be buying a car in the next few years. A Lexus GS will be nice, otherwise I am looking at either a LC500H or a LS500, which are quite expensive.
@@cococly Nope. It's the 2.5 skyactive g but with a few other cylinders and some adjustments for balancing and the new turbo/mild hybrid setup. There's a rumor that Toyota and Mazda might have been co developing a coupe that might take the place of the Lexus RC and have a corresponding Mazda model, but just rumors.
@@markcoopers1930 thanks for the in depth info. Hopefully Mazda partnering with Toyota will result in Mazda being able to crank out more niche models and speed up innovations than they've been able to in the past. And the partnership helps both brands strengthen their offerings and weaker areas. A codeveloped Lexus/Mazda coupe/Sport sedan/sports car sounds like it could be a winner! Much more likely possible from an R&D investment perspective than a Mazda only model.
I’m honestly fine with soccer moms not having the 0-60 time of an Elantra N in a 5000 pound vehicle 😅
But they all turn into Formula 1 drivers when they are late for Timmy’s soccer practice ZOOM-ZOOM GET OUTTA THE WAY 😂
The wet clutch transmission will be a problem in the long-term.
@@phatgringo2.0 Yeah I'm curious to see how it holds up over time. Mazda makes their own transmissions in-house so I trust that it'll be dependable. The six speed AT gets a lot of flack for being outdated, but it's proven to be reliable and very smooth.
Lol try going to the nearest park you would think your are in a hyundai/kia dealership. They should try and bring the cx60 to North America.
@@kaizen5180 they are. Called the CX 70 coming out end of the year. Will be slightly longer and wider than the CX 60 in Europe.
1:42 it’s so freakin cool to see an inline 4 longitudinally mounted in a PHEV family crossover. This is a great era for SUV’s
The design is just so beautiful and classy. It's commendable that they stick to curves instead of squarish approach and corners because that's what sets it apart. It's like they grew in size the KODO-designed concept car and made some alterations to create this SUV. This is a solid car - an elegant and powerful one in this segment.
I am looking at the CX-90 with the inline-6. Nice redesign.
It's a new design, not a redesign of anything really (assuming you are referring to CX-9)
@@hughchen9683 calm your tits down.
@@hughchen9683 Fantastic redesign
That saddle tan leather interior looks really luxurious. My favorite color interior and it goes so well with almost every exterior color.
It is only available on the very top trims
I was so hyped years ago when Mazda departed from ford (THE BEST MOVE THEY COULD HAVE POSSIBLY MAKE) the reliability has boosted. then watching that they were going to go rear wheel drive and luxury. Coming from a previous Mazda protege(first car) Ms6 owner. I currently own a CX-9 I love it. This thing right here 🤤 good job Mazda! They deserve all the sales!
My first car was a Mazda Protege as well! Nice to see a fellow Mazda lover at heart. I'm pumped to see what Mazda offers in the CX90 platform!
We focus too much on 0-60. Not saying it’s a useless figure. We have to also take into account the 21 inch tires, gear rations and ecu tuning. Maybe Mazda wasn’t chasing the fastest 0-60. 6.33 is very respectable, though.
I agree and keep in mind that this was pre productions spec and the engines have not been broken in yet, I have no doubt that the 0-60 times will drop below the 6.0 time
Currently own a Hyundai Tucson and I find this important. When I have to do a quick merge into freeways or when I am waiting to go left or right from 0 kph into a road which is mostly busy, this becomes crucial.
And oh the 4900 lb weight of this vehicle.
Well it matters more in family haulers. An extra adult, plugs a couple kids and some luggage can made you vehicle a dog.
Met your friend Rhyder at the Lucian Showroom in FL. Very nice guy. Spoke very highly of you and was telling me how you were thinking of starting a car review channel. and now here you are.
Mazda cars are very reliable and durable !!!
I think the styling is gorgeous. Clean lines, no fussy plastic crap everywhere, gorgeous paint. It looks expensive.
really nice to see 60fps on your video sofyan! Very good review and enjoyable review ;)
Glad you enjoyed it!
That burgandy color is very rich. Very nice color.
I'm A Cx9 owner so I'm sold on Mazda. I'd buy the Cx90 because its a luxury vehicle without the luxury nameplate - - yet. I'd probably opt for the highest trim level that doesn't have the rear seat console. Beautiful car and great review.
This is the right Mazda SUV I wanted to buy.
Great review. And glad to see your channel is still going strong. Your review of the 2016 Cx5 helped me with that purchasing decision, and this review is just as helpful as I’m now looking to get something bigger for my growing family.
I love the styling of this vehicle. And that color is divine. I will definitely give Mazda a closer look.
Great review as always! The digital rear view mirror can be added as an option !
LDND - that's nice to know. I'd pay $500 for a CD player but I'm probably the only person on earth that would.
I know Sofyan likes the boxy look and I agree as long as the suv is supposed to be rugged, but I love the curves on this CX-90 it looks smooth. I rented a CX-9 one time and I like the interior layout. It was easy on the eyes roomy and comfy but this just takes it to a more upscale next level. Now I'm not an suv guy I'm a car enthusiasts, my wife loves suv's as I would guess most women do, and I would absolutely buy this new CX-90 for her just because I like it, forget about if she likes it or not lol (don't tell her I said that)😁. Now what's going on with the Mazda 6 what's taking so long!
The Mazda 6 was discontinued because of the lack of demand for sedans. They did design a rwd sedan with this new inline 6 engine, but they canceled the project for the same reason that the 6 was discontinued. I'm sure if the market's obsession with SUV's ever cooled, it wouldn't take long for Mazda to dust off the plans for that rwd sedan.
@@edwinramos4910 Dang nabit!!
I could only dream if Mazda made a redesigned 6 with this motor. I'm tired of crossovers, but this is nice.
26:10 The reason Mazda has the option of two and three person bench in the back, is because in some countries you are not allowed to have seats for more than 7 people in a car/SUV. This way, you can mix and match the amount of seats between the second and third row.
We'll see how this thing rolls out but what I can see from the review, Mazda has an absolute hit on their hands. Very well done inside and out.
This just makes me look forward to the new Mazda 6
I'm just glad it has that nice sounding _thunk_ when you close the door!
You did a really nice review of the new CX90. I'm looking at making the CX90 our new family vehicle. One thing on the soft touch molded plastic. I appreciate the choice of material in that location. While leather is nice, it takes some tlc over the years to make sure the sun doesn't shrink the leather in those areas. I have three children and a busy life. I don't need a car which requires meticulous care to the leather. I just don't have the time or the will to take care of it. Of course, that's my life and my perspective.
One thing I found impressive is the bolstering of this vehicle. Granted I haven't had a personal experience with it, but watching you, you had very little sliding back and forth when carving the curves of your route.
One request: when you complete your 0-60 test, can you consider adding a rolling start to 70 test? This would be something akin to an onramp to the interstate. Maybe something like 20-70?
Excellent reviews sir. Thank you and keep up the great work!!!
You said multiple times how you wish it had/were expecting leather stitching on the dash/door panels etc as you’ve seen it in other luxury vehicles. Those vehicles are $10k+ more than this when comparably equipped. It’s a great trade off IMO.
You are soooo funny without even trying😂😂 The 0 to 60 tests had me cracking up !!!
This paint color with the white interior 🤤🤤🤤
Great review, excellent car great value for money.
Mazda knows how to make cars. The CX90 in-line 6 350 ponies is awesome, just got it today for 59k paid cash.
Do people really put 3 people in the 3rd row?!?!?!?! Why does it seem like it's such a big deal?
I just test drove this thing today.
Great looking, soaks up road bumps pretty well for the wheel size. Also interior feels and looks great, although i did not get much time to play with the instrument cluster and infotainment.
With all the positives in mind, i noticed one big and one subjective flaw.
If you are taller than 6 foot (i am 6' 4"), i am pretty sure you will hate the driver seat. I also weigh 220 lbs, so not too bulky. The middle cluster to the door panel width is too narrow! There is no way to relax the legs a bit. It forces you to sit lets say properly and straight. Good for short trips, horrible for anything longer than 1 hr. This is a big bummer for me.
2nd, the top engine is too loud in the cabin especially when being aggressive with the pedal, and also it is not as torque rich as the spec claims. It will be hard to get better than say 6.5 second 0-60 on a regular basis, although i did not mesure it.
Anyways maybe it needs some breaking in.
The latter is bot that big of a deal to me personally, but the former is a deal breaker. Anyone else experience this?
I can't get over that front end! Mazdas always look good but manage to still look like a Mazda. I see a tiny bit of Audi in it but it looks muscley and nice
Great review... Outstanding honestly.. Excellent presentation epic camera work. I like this car a lot actually and I'm not even a Mazda person. I really wished they had auxiliary tail exhaust tips. I honestly don't like the way they spec it out. I like 2 seater up front 3 seater at the back and 2 seater in the 3rd row only for emergencies otherwise they'd be permanently hidden. This is nitpicking I know but can you please comment more about the audio system of the cars.. What company is responsible for the speakers and if you are happy with them. Other that excellent work.. Both presenter and camera man!
Cmon man, everybody knows kids go in the 3rd row. Who's putting full sized adults back there?
Nice job!!👍
As always variety of location for to review cars
good job man
Hope they find a way to put that inline into the new miata. Or at least give us an option to by a turbo version or a non turbo version
Probably not.
I think Sofan mentioned several times that unlike Toyota, Mazda cannot lose money on any vehicle that they produce. Since that’s the case, putting the new inline-6 into a Miata or a Mazda6 wouldn’t be financially smart for Mazda. In America, people are SUV/CUV crazy and that’s where the money is for Mazda at the moment.
Too nose heavy for the Miata. The current Miata is very neutral and lightweight.
A larger convertible would be nice. Perhaps the size of a Lexus LC? Make it 10 or 20 grand less than the Lexus.
@@toddgersh unfortunately I don’t see Mazda doing a halo car with small volume.
Just the review I've been waiting on. I love the CX-90 but still very torn on the headlight design. I need to go see one in person.
I have the same views about the headlights design but so far all the reviews make it seem like it does look better in person.
When I first saw these headlights on the 60 I was aghast! But without even seeing them in person on the 90, I’ve fallen in love with them and have no doubt that they will be in perfect form in the flesh.
Also, I think it gives the car a more handsome mature upscale look, more masculine yet refined,
I just purchased 2024 CX-90 Premium Plus Turbo. Love the headlights at night, best vision I have had!
21:28 you can see the ambient lighting in the door trim. I’m guessing there’s a strip across the dash too.
Just bought a CX-90 Premium, and of note the smaller infotainment screen is not touchscreen even when in CarPlay. Great car all around!
Excellent review guys. More excited to own a Mazda
Cool very interested to see comparison to the MDX
Mazda have the best R&D in the industry l, since they are cash-strapped, they don't mess around.
Do the batteries charge when driving with gas engine? Like, if you're on a long road trip using the gas engine only for hundreds of miles... does the battery continue charging?
yes, according to other sources.
Don't blackout the chrome . . . that is a classic design with the chrome low and forward of the doors with the sharp, almost Art Deco lettering. Beautiful!!!😍
@16:22 Beautiful interior, but that white fabric on the dash under the display is going to look like trash after a few years of bracing your hand on it to use the touchscreen
Could just learn to use the dial.... That way you won't have to clean fingerprints off the screen eother
My wife waiting for the grand highlander this is nice but I can tell little tight she likes the square box trunk and she currently owns a 2012 highlander with 130k miles on it not one single problem ever since purchased new since April of 2012
The way it accelerates from 0-60 reminds me of my old 2016 CX-5
Looks great. Fog lights should be standard affair for a SUV, especially a premium one.
I really do hope that Mazda bring back the Mazda6 with the new inline 6 engine in it. That sounds like a good competitor to the BMW 3-series.
Not if they don’t do a m competition competitor... you all love to include Japanese brands in big automotive fights when they simply don’t have the chops. A rwd mazda 6 would be cute but nothing more than cute. NOT a bmw competitor.
I’m waiting for the CX-70! As a 2021 Rav4 Prime owner, I’m debating on whether I’m buying the CX-70 with the incline-6 or going with the PHEV version. The incline-6 will provide a more spirited driving experience and a nice sound to boot but I also enjoy not having to make weekly trips to a gas station to fill up! It’s been four months since I have put gas in my Prime and I think I might miss that feeling if I go with the incline-6.
I have a couple of months to think about it before the CX-70’s become available to buy. 🧐
I’d get the inline 6, it seems like a standout
Wow 4 months and I go every week
The cx70 will be avail in 2 months? Not much info on it, except it might be coming.
@@fakedazzleful the first week of December was the last time I filled up my Prime with gas at Costco and that’s something I think I might miss if I go with the inline-6. I think a deciding factor for me will be what the final EV range will be for the PHEV model. If it’s at least 38 miles, that’s enough to cover my daily driving needs. If it’s 28 miles like the CX-90 PHEV, then I might go with the inline-6.
@Paul Ira well I can tell you this. If your prime still work then keep it and wait for the cx 90 next year since it will have more feature and better stuff overrall
“I like how this drives more the Ford Explorer I drove”…..yup! That’s pretty obvious as no Ford SUV is known for driving dynamics. Mazda is such a great company that has found that sweet niche of providing great vehicles to astute customers without making the customer question whether they paid too much. Lexus quality, German dynamics at Toyota and Honda pricing….BRILLIANT! Way to go Mazda! My wife’s CX-5 Signature and my Miata RF Club BBR are both amazing ! Keep hitting it out of the park!
The Mazda CX-90 is very special, a affordable family crossover SUV made for the driving enthusiasts! A new modern powerful Made in Japan JDM inline-6 turbocharge engine it's been 20 years ago since Japan made their last inline-6 engine the legendary 2JZ and RB. A new rear wheel drive Midship platform places the engine farther back in the chassis for enhanced handling with independent double wishbone suspension geometry. Thank you Mazda for all you do. You will make driving fun again for all of us that needs a family crossover SUV to go do some grocery shopping at Costco or a family road trip
Special?? very overused meaningless adjective. the new mazda is neither special nor affordable.
Good ad copy
I drive a mazda 6 signature but need a practical 3 row SUV. This cx90 is not practical nor affordable so my choice will be a Palisade Calligraphy trim or wait for the Grand Highlander!
Cant see mazda as a luxury brand but definitely a premium brand
I think that's where they should be. It would be a mistake going luxury.
Agreed. It’s def premium but charging luxury prices
New camera bruh? Video quality looks good!
Perhaps the most interesting part is at 38:00
That's the difference in mazda's hybrid system, electric motor in ev mode only that still shifts thru its 8at just like its ICE.
I guess just in case the ICE needs to kick in, it would be in the right gear.
Great video as always Sofyan!
It’s odd that they don’t just make the 3 passenger 3rd row bench standard in the US. There should be a delete option for the 2nd row center council on the top trim (or make it removable). It just takes up unnecessary space.
Is the cx-90 phev equiped with an heat pump like the rav4 prime and outlander phev to maximise winter ev range?
No
Without Rob in the passenger seat it’s definitely a 6.1 s 0/60time 😆
Can’t wait for them to go full luxury. Such an underdog story.
I really hope they bring this to Singapore! Am really looking forward to the new lineups of SUV/CUV the CX-50 , 60 , 90!!
18:28 That’s the exact same shifter that’s in the MX-30. So I imagine it will be in all Mazda products in a few years.
you always amaze me how you do your homework and know all these details!!
Next time you review cars with cargo space, bring along a single jogger and dual tandem seat stroller. Family ppl want to know how those fit with ALL seats up.
31:45 Yes! You nailed it.
I enjoy redline reviews and look forward to new posts
Beautiful view of the SF Bay 😊
Little worried they broke the embargo on this since driving impressions are to be released tomorrow. Great review though. Mazda has a winner here, I'm not sold on some of their interior material choices. The white will never work where I live in snow, and the suede is a deal breaker as it will be a nightmare to take care of. Seats are still hard, I'll never figure out why Mazda will not fix the seats compared to others, and it doesn't sound like they fixed the heavy steering yet, which driving modes should fix.. Gorgeous vehicle though and it shows just how crazy the pricing is on the new Honda/Acura products. Can't wait to try it...although I would rather a Mazda 6 :(
Embargo lifted today.
I think it looks really quite good. It is a bit more distinctive and I think that the front end is particularly attractive. It has a hint of restraint while remaining just interesting enough to not totally put you to sleep. Of course, it is as attractive as a middle-class soccer mom 3-row SUV can be. It is at least not as dull as an Ascent or a Highlander
I like the BOLD intro where you park in no parking :) style statement :)
Thank you Sofyan for this thorough review. Thank you again for addressing the shortcomings of the driver assistance. It's an emerging technology that is too often glossed over as it does really matter to some people.
I’m really curious on the mileage on the PHEV. In addition, is the CX-90 PHEV eligible for tax credit? I will definitely buy this model if both are a yes.
No, it’s built in Japan.
Japan, Korea, and EU are trying to negotiate with the US regarding the inflation reduction act.
@@blackwhirlwind1245 they were included then got dropped and are soon to be re added

No credit in Canada on the top trim.
Not as impressed as i thought either. But glad they have a PHEV in there lineup. speed aint everything but figured it be faster after all that online bragging saying they would kill it with the Inline6.
Inline 6's are inherently more balanced and smoother than inline 4 and V6. That plus RWD bias AWD in a unibody vehicle make it stand out from Mazdas' traditional competition. Have to look at Genisis and the Germans for RWD bias (and I guess the grand Cherokee L), and only the Germans for the inline 6. That's why everyone was (is) excited.

Sofyan, I'm also here in "The City" San Francisco, California, on vacation with family. Staying in North Beach. I hope you had a great stay.
I drove this yesterday. Liked it.
Man can't wait for Mazda to make a dedicated EV platform, it took them a long time to go beyond the 5/6 speed but every time Mazda makes a car it seems so on point. Mazda understand performance but they're just too small of a company to make tremendous jumps that others can. Mazda is constantly keeping people on its toes and showing that there's always something different and interesting.
nice shirt, I see you are rocking the old school Van's and also the wedding ring.....nice. Awesome review, as always. Thank you!
The front looks great, but the back looks like it could use some more moderation.

Great review as always… ❤
I wonder how the suede dash is going to hold up for people who clean all the time
All reviews look great with the Bay Bridge in the background 😊
All the soccer moms are drooling right now
Does the second row recline?
It’s definitely a cool car, but a few things to be wary of when using it as a do-all family car. That nice fabric trim would get destroyed if any family is like mine, and the non-carpeted 2nd row seat backs are sure to get scuffed or torn. And not a fan of the artificially fading LED turn signals that Mazda (and BMW) is doing; it looks much better when it’s just on/off. Otherwise, a lot to like here in terms of style, luxury, features, and practicality.
I like the front. Hate the back. It's too bulbous and hearse-like. Love the interior!
No sway bar for rear suspension ?
Wow! Seems like Mazda wants to push their brand into the premium luxury segment. I’d take this over the Acura MDX, Genesis GV80, and definitely the Lexus RX.
I’d take a gv80 over this because it’s even nicer but yea I’d absolutely take it over the RX and definitely the upcoming Lexus tx
@@naveenthemachine Well said. The reason why I would take it over MDX is because of its touchscreen infotainment system and gear shift stick -ish. As for the GV80, I like the fuel economy on the CX-90 better especially with the plug in hybrid.
that new red really makes this thing pop
Telluride and pallisade may have more space but gas guslers so the PHEV is my preferred.
