    Mazda is aiming upscale with the 2024 CX-90, creating an all-new three-row SUV that separates itself from mainstream models like the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, and Ford Explorer, with aspirations toward luxury brands such as Acura, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. The CX-90 Turbo Preferred Plus we purchased anonymously for our test program is built on a brand-new platform, and boasts Mazda’s first-ever inline six-cylinder engine mated to the brand's own eight-speed automatic transmission. But will all the new changes be enough to impress buyers within the highly competitive market? We also explain CR's testing process, from the moment we purchase a vehicle to when we publish our conclusions in our Road Test report.

    As someone who’s lived with this shifter for the last 2 months, two things: (1) I got used to it quickly, and (2) its major advantage is that it allows me to make 3-point turns without having to look down to make sure I’m not accidentally shifting into Park.

      Exactly thats what i thought as well when i test drove it, basically you can maneuver gears without looking once you get use to it

      I would say this shifter is like the old school gated shifter, whose P R and D form a triangle

      I’ve been driving for over 30yrs using traditional automatic shifters and have never ever shifted it to Park by mistake when reversing!🤦‍♂️

    Mazda has a good reputation, their name has always been associated with fun to drive dynamics and great reliability. I don’t think it will be that difficult for people to buy into it as a premium brand. I would argue that Mazda already has better brand cachet than Infiniti maybe even Acura to some degree. I also think Mazda will be the final blow to Infiniti. On another note can we chill with the nitpicks and get more nuanced feedback about the cars?

    The command knob is fantastic. You can do all your commands with muscle memory, never take your eyes off the road and eliminate smudging the touchscreen.

      I'm glad someone FINALLY pointed this out. Touch screens take your focus off driving, and searching and scrolling through menu's on a touch screen is like so incredibly distracting. I think as time goes on we'll see touch screens go away, at least till the car can take over and drive for you while you're slogging through icon after icon and sub menu after sub menu trying to find the base, treble or the dash brightness screen.

    Mazda up to now has been moving upscale since the launch in 2017 of the CX-5, now and still the top selling Mazda. The CX-50 took it incremental more upscale. The CX-30 did the same. Now the CX-90 is moving much more in the upscale direction with a new powertrain that is fully modern (8 speed automatic instead of 6 speed, inline 6 instead of inline 4). I think as long as their reliability holds up they will continue to do well. It is like Subaru was years ago - a small company that appeals to performance drivers for a cheaper price than the European imports. Really appreciate the background on how they test the cars over 8 weeks pending weather and then discuss, and write the 5000 word story. Very interesting!

    I bought a 2017 XT5 with the electronic shifter. It took me a day to get used to it. I love it now. I'm buying a CX 90, and the shifter is not an issue.

    +1 .. Straight Six inline configurations are hip, the way to go. The inline 3.0 Six turbo from Mercedes (in our '23 E-450 Wagon) has a glorious exhaust sound at the top of the RPM range. .. Way To Go Mazda!

    All three of these “experts” are dead wrong about the shifter. Everyone hates push button shifters so much worse. Having to look down to make 3 point turns in a giant vehicle and slam it into park? No. This is the last frontier of manual controls. Next they’ll suggest putting them behind screens to save money, lol. A driver should have and feel control behind a 2 ton object.

      I never used a push button shifter myself, seem like a pain to get used to, I test drove this car last weekend, felt pretty natural to me. Not sure why they spent 2 minute whining about it.

    I’m enjoying your discussion on how you go through the process, as you words, reports, and reviews can affect the sales of a car or product. I’ve used your reviews to purchase cars and other products over the years, so I truly appreciate the efforts you are putting in here. One question I have for you is how much of our feedback on a platform like this would you say realistically gets addressed by the manufacturer such as to Mazda in this case? And do those same manufacturers then send you acknowledgements that a particular concern or review will be addressed or noted that you can report back to us viewers? Thanks again.

    First, the transmission shifting glitches can/will be cured with future software updates. Secondly, it’s worth pointing out that the CX90 is 100% made in Hofu Japan. None of the other models mentioned here are made in Japan. Lastly, the core attributes of the CX90, (rear wheel biased, AWD, inline six, true plug in model, etc) are not found in the models it competes against.

      The transmission shifting glitches will be fixed in future firmware upgrades.. That’s what Stellantis said for 9 years with the Jeep Cherokee ZF9 speed transmission. It was eventually fixed by scrapping the Cherokee in 2023. It wasn’t just Chrysler. It was many makes and models that used the ZF9. with this experience, I recommend hold for a while if there are transmission problems already.

      Firstly, the CX5 is also built entirely in Japan, and so is the Miata iirc.
      Secondly, it's basically competing with the BMW X5 which is all of those?
      I'm not dissing the CX90 because I absolutely love that thing, but you should really do some research.

    I have owned two Mazdas purchased new: A 1990 626 with manual transmission and my current 2014 Mazda 6 Sport also with a manual transmission. The 2014 now has 109K miles and is capable of returning 35mpg @ 80 mph. I have had absolutely no mechanical issues and do my own routine maintenance. The Skyactive technology is pretty impressive. I am waiting to see what the real world mpg on the Preferred Plus will be in your testing. We do not need the 3rd seat all the time, but could use the extra space with the 3rd seat down. We also have owned 2 Subaru Foresters from new. A 2011 base trim with auto and our current 2016 base with CVT. The Foresters have been reliable, but I am not a fan of the CVT or engine revs trying to maintain highway speeds on moderate hills. I would appreciate a vehicle with a more relaxed feel for long distance, better driving dynamics and above average fuel mileage for the class. If the CX90 delivers on all of this I am seriously interested.

      Really? Wow. People pay attention to this one!!!! While I don't find the cx90 as refined or as richly adorned as the X5, the CX90 is a beautiful car inside and out. If the seats were better and they bumped the HP I'd be all over it. Where they made the mistake with the CX90, is by downsizing to a 4 cyl for the PHEV. BMW KEEPS the 6 CYL and ADDS hybrid power, where as Mazda removes two cylinders on the hybrid. I'd be buying a CX90 today had they kept the 6Cly turbo and added PHEV power. Other than this major performance mistake on the PHEV, the CX90 is really sweet option!

    Fit and finish not up to par Keith? I’ve looked them over and sat in a couple, and they are beautiful and seem perfect. I’ve also seen a few videos where they say fit and finish is top notch and probably better than luxury brand Japanese brands.

    How wide is the 2nd row bench seat? I have 2 kids that use booster seats and a MIL that need to fit comfortably in the 2nd row. Is Mazda the right choice?

    I'm really looking forward to the cx 70. I feel like there is alot of us that just want a 5 seater with ample room. The cx5 is just kinda dinky

    The estimate of 8 weeks delay after testing to the actual road report is optimistic in some cases. The BMW X1 report took six months.

    Good thing they put the letters (P, R, N, D) on the shifter so anyone that can read can figure it out easily. If you can't read, then maybe you shouldn't be driving.

      I like it too, however during my test drive when I went to park the test vehicle I left it in whatever the gear is at the top of the shifter and it started to roll away when I took my foot off the brake. I think with a couple of drives this would become second nature. It's silly to hammer on this as a core subject on an otherwise pretty magnificent non european lux cruiser.

    I could see it coming that someone on this panel was going to complain about the lack of a touch screen. The automotive press is constantly clueless on this issue with Mazda. Sure, I guess maybe some people prefer a touch screen, but as far as I'm concerned the fact that Mazda is focused on the control dial instead is WONDERFUL!! It is super easy to operate by feel alone, which is great while driving, and you don't get a bunch of ugly smudge marks all over your screen that you have to constantly clean. Please Mazda, keep the control wheel and don't give in to the pressure of a touch screen!

    The dash and center console look great. If the dash is soft touch and not molded plastic, then it would be very nice. My 4th gen Prius has gloss black and gloss white. The gloss black always looks dirty. The gloss white on the steering wheel looks like a Stormtrooper's codpiece (ugh). After an actor was run over/killed by his Jeep which I think had a monostable shifter several years ago, many people including CR harshly criticized monostable shifters. Now the CR guy in the wire-rim glasses is criticizing this for NOT having a monostable shifter. I agree that it should not go P->R->D.

    The RUclipsr Car Care Nut Review says that a lot of basic maintenance will require for the engine to be removed or require significant engine disassembly, because of how it’s designed. That will translate most likely into high maintenance costs. Do you think that’s an accurate assessment of the CX-90?

    The dealer cannot jack up MSRP. That is dictated by manufacturer. The dealer can slap on Added Dealer Markup, but it needs to be a separate line item from MSRP.

      Semantics. Dealers can sell for whatever price the market will bear. Thus, MSRP has always been meaningless.

    I own a Subaru Ascent and I absolutely love the car….but….The one thing holding me back from buying a new Subaru is the lack of a hybrid option. So now I’m looking at Mazda cx-90 phev or Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid.

    The market has changed quite a bit since this was made, I think. I was able to lease a CX-90 PHEV last week for S-Plan price, plus the $7,500 lease cash incentive, and I was able to negotiate an excellent money factor for the lease too. I basically got a $60k car for $50k. I love the car and can't complain.

    I did not hear them mention the fact that the Inline 6 engine has the cam chain in the rear of the engine. If this cam chain needs to be replaced/repaired, the entire engine needs to be removed. Huge task that can cost $3000+.

      It isn't a belt. Kind of a non issue. I don't think I've ever had to swap a timing chain. I do know who's video you saw that in though lol. Remember that mechanic loves Toyota's

    Not sure they needed the turbo, the earlier Highlanders did well with a non-turbo V6. Problem with turbos, as soon as the boost kicks in, gas mileage drops like a rock. Maybe I missed it, but it needs premium gas.

    VERY insightful table discussion which is why I've been a CR subscriber/user for over 40 years. I expect and want details that your testers/raters provide. As for the Mazda CX90, I am interested in purchasing one in the next year or two (I already own and will keep a 2021 CX5----my third) moving from a Honda Pilot. However, Mazda made a huge mistake on the shifter design expecting us (older) customers to just get used to it. If the 2025 shifter isn't improved, I'll stick with Honda.

    With as many cars as CR buys I think you owe it to everyone to not pay over MSRP. If the dealers you buy from play that game you walk and look for dealers that don’t. It is easier than ever thru online platforms to find cars with just a little homework. You should put yourselves in the typical buyers shoes and negotiate every last penny and not be taken advantage of by overpaying.

      MSRP has always been a meaningless, sales gimmick. That is one of the oldest direct sales techniques in the world.
      Break up the mnf/dealership oligopoly by removing their anti-trust exemptions. That would be the best scenario for buyers. But, it would also mean that pols would have to go up against the all powerful NADA.

    Big kudos to Mazda for developing a in-line six cylinder engine with A mild hybrid, in a three row crossover, everyone else has gotten rid of the Six cylinder.The The Mazda CX 90 PHEV is definitely a unique Vehicle, it is not like a Toyota Highlander it is a drivers car! Does the Toyota Highlander hybrid get better mileage of course it does, but I am way more interested in a drivers SUV than a ECVT.I am so glad that Mazda still makes driving fun even in a three row SUV!❤ on top of it it still gets 28 miles per gallon on the highway if you drive it non-aggressively if you drive it like you stole it of course you’re not going to get that kind of mileage. I just love when someone test drives it and said they’re only getting 20 to 23 combined, well of course it’s got power and you’re gonna use it so don’t expect to get the best mileage if you drive it that way.Yes the Mazda does have some strange corks to it, but it is fun to drive! #ZoomZoom

    Every ounce of engeneering???😅😅😅 I had 6 recalls and it’s been 12 days in dealer within 3000miles, many issues not fixable

    mazda has a massive partnership with Toyota...they build cars in the same factory in Alabama , these guys should know this ...they even said Mazda had no partner companies ....wrong!

    I would agree that the lower level CX-90 interiors feels cheap - especially the black, The higher end stuff is much nicer and actually feels premium. But, I would also argue that the SX level (non prestige) Telluride interior is cheap feeling as well.

    I find the shifter a very good fearure and easy to use and easy to learn its the same on Lexus NX I beleive and much better than a push button MDX

    You guys always bag mazda for no touch screen and only using the rotary dial. After owning a 2019 cx-5 for 2 years and then selling it off, its been 2 or 3 years since I parted ways with that car and I still miss the dial

      It would be good to disallow drivers to "mess" with the screen while driving. In 2023, should not be difficult to implement smart voice commands.

    I’ve owned 4 Honda’s, and converted to Mazda on my last car. It’s competitive in price, but definitely feels more premium compared to a Honda or Toyota.

    "EVs are a rich person's proposition". If you qualify for the tax incentive, a Tesla can be had for under $40k, well under the average price of a new car. And, Tesla still sells more EVs than all other makers combined. CR, please don't ignore the elephant in the room.

      Also, the math isn't "EVs sell for over $60k on average". That's only true if you take one Lucid, one Model S, one Hummer EV, etc., add them all together and divide by the number of models available. The better way to do it is to get an average of the PRICE PAID for an EV. That would be well under $60k. All those Model 3's, Model S's and ID4s would make the number under $60k.

      ​@@tenblinkers3173, that's still too simple. The actual numbers of the EVs sold per price "bracket" should be taken into account. The brackets should be shown as bars in a graph (to show the actual distribution) plus minimum, median, and maximum prices. This approach should be used for all data that has value. Median is still simplistic, but better than the average value alone. I don't see good reasons to not publish both of them for the same data set.

    We tested a cx30 the entertainment system was fumbling to operate this car should have a touch screen when then tested RAV4 hybrid the whole test with the cx 30 we couldn’t figure out how to work the entertainment system with the rav it was so easy myself I’ve been waiting for the cx70 my lease on my 22 pathfinder is up in 2024 September but if it doesn’t have a touchscreen I probably won’t lease it Genesis maybe my choice

    Mazda is now widely considered the third most reliable brand after Toyota and Honda. I think they can justify marketing some of the higher end vehicles. If they're going to last a long time, they might as well also be luxurious.

    I am waiting for Mazda to put the new straight six into a version of the Mazda 6. I heard that they were working on it. I don’t want or need an SUV.

      Me too.. but sadly Mazda 6/60 sedan.. not happening. I drive a modded 2014 Acura TL 3.7 SHawd sedan. So.. I'm saving cash right now for coming CX-70. You should too. It's gonna be a great vehicle for the $$S.

    Mazda is usually pretty good but considering that for the CX90 ...
    The engine is all new, the transmission is all new (a dual clutch designed in house), the chassis is new and the all-wheel drive system is new. I'd certainly be waiting a few years for reliability data before dropping $55k plus on a CX90. Many reviewers saying the DCT has lots of hesitation when shifting.

    I've seen huge number of road tests over the years. I don't remember any where "dummy weight" (mass to be exact) was used to simulate the passenger plus "cargo" in the rear of the vehicle. This is not a realistic testing. Reason for this comment: "you don't need the 340."

    Sorry but some diet will make you fit better in Miata or CX90 too, seats are designed for average folks ... My 6'1" 215lbs fits perfectly comfortable but at the same time I slide around in most American brands
    8 seats complains are a joke , 4 adults and 4 small kids maybe ... 6 are fine , 7 squeeze and that is perfectly ok .
    Shifter, no problem what so ever.
    Sportier ride on 21s , just drop 2 psi to 31psi and it will be lot sorter or get 19 inch version .

    wow, griping that the transmission doesn't automatically shift into park?? We're dumb, but we're not that dumb--even in a rental car. I can't remember what brand rental car it was but to engage cruise required pushing a button on the dash. Oh my! It took 3 seconds to figure it out! Consumer Repots is great but this is getting pretty damn picky.

    No point in having a real shifter when coupled to an electronic box. Buttons work really well, like what Honda does. The shift is there to satisfy old habits associated to old technology, but it is just silly… I have to say CR has been a big critic of buttons, but why? It’s silly to create a placebo device to simulate old tech.

    I’m in California and just got a Genesis GV60. I was able to a few thousand off MSRP and the $7,500 IRA rebate in a lease. BTW, I replace a Tesla Model 3 with it.

      The CX90s are all built in Japan. It's generally accepted that Japan built is better quality than U.S. built. Even on the same make and models.
      All Lexus were Japan built until recently. And, their are cracks showing in the Lexus reliability ratings with the U.S. built models.

    I test drove this vehicle and found it drives like a boat. I’m 6’2” and the lift gate doesn’t go high enough to let me stand underneath, it’s really awkward. I don’t like how the screen is so far back. In Canada the top trim is $10k USD less expensive than in the US.

    Keith, give them a break! Mazda is a quality car company. Perhaps you should set aside your bias and look into the engineering behind this vehicle. My 2015 Mazda CX5 has over 200K and running perfectly. I also have a Lexus IS which has been in the shop for a water pump and other issues, and it has under 60K miles. So, come on dude, give them a break! Mercedes does not have an up-market brand either and YES; Mazda can compete anytime. I have owned German vehicles, and they require a lot of love and care. You never mention the cost of repairs. It is ridiculous. I do not like this report.

    There won't be a shortage of batteries, The Canadian Government has given both Volkswagen and
    Stellantis 10's of billions of dollars to build plants to manufacturer batteries while EV cats sales
    are plummeting. They'll be out of business before their completed.

    Fluffy guys just don’t go into the third row of any CUV or SUV. Sorry Keith. As far as the infotainment system a big thing CR and others miss is the touch screen is tactile and you have to look where you touch. Mazda is safety conscience using tactile connection. I would expect CR employees would make that a priority as well. Missing that discussion reduces credibility.

      Yes, I have a 2017 Mazda 6, and it has a touch screen and the control wheel. The car automatically disables the touch screen when it is moving for safety. The control wheel is great.

    EV rules for tax credits are confusing. Here are some to try to help: If you are single and you make a modified AGI over $150,000, you don't get any credit. If you are married and you make a modified AGI over $300,000 you don't get any credit. If you are the head of household and you make a modified AGI over $225,000 you don't get any credit. In 2024 the rules will be simplified. The new rule is that if you’re buying a clean vehicle, you will have the option, beginning in 2024, to take the EV tax credit as a discount at the time you purchase the vehicle. Essentially, you would be transferring the credit to the dealer, who would be able to lower the price of the vehicle by the amount of the credit. This means that you won’t have to wait until it’s time to file your tax return to benefit from the electric vehicle tax credit.

      The Forester is not in the same class, you would have to look at the CX-30/CX-50…..I do agree that prices are getting out of hand. I see people driving these beasts that will never use the space or tow capacity.

      Comparing a Forester to the CX90 ☠️. It’s not even remotely comparable. The CX90 is bigger, way more refined, has a turbo i6 and rwd architecture, and a significantly nicer interior. It also starts at 40k with a ton of standard equipment. Why do people always mention the highest price? This car is one of the best bargains on the market in the lower trims.

    The cars sounds right up my alley but the thing that concerns me is the engine compartment and the lay-out. I heard that the bay is small and the engine is shoehorned into it. The other thing i heard was that the timing belt is in the rear of the engine and the engine has to be pulled out to service it. It sounds like it would be a mechanics, or owners, nightmare. Anyone heard that?

      Mazda is using a timing chain. Not a belt. Timing chains generally last the life of the vehicle and are not serviced or replaced.

      Timing chain lasts the life of a car unlike TIMING BELT that needs replacement at certain mileage. So chain being at the back or any side is not an issue.

      The most common MSRP in this segment is between 45-50k, Mazda offers this mid trim at that price point. It’s not the base model.

      Usually they end up with the mid-level trim. Gabe has said before that they will often ask manufacturers what their expected take rate is on each trim level, and take that into consideration with their own experience with the model. As they've stated, CR is concerned primarily with reviewing and testing mass appeal vehicles that are equipped the way that represents how most consumers will buy the vehicle. Remember, they buy the vehicles off dealer lots and they turn around and sell them after the testing is complete. A friend of mine bought the Ford Aerostar XLT that CR reviewed and tested back in the day. He held onto it until it rusted to pieces.

    Ehh I'm not sold on this Mazda. Disappointed in the rear end design and the SPACE. I feel like the back window should be less raked and a bit more square. This would be a great vehicle 10 years ago but competition has grown in every way. Oh yea that shifter SUCKS

      It's been reported by the insurance industry and others, that distracted driving now exceeds drunk driving as a cause of accidents.
