    Camry is a great vehicle so glad they haven’t screwed it up with a turbo

    The car itself is fine, the issue with Toyota right now is the buying experience: Between chronic low inventory, dealer add-ons, market adjustments, and not being able to custom order, it’s a hard no for me.
    Up until 2 mos ago, I had owned Camry’s since ‘04 (6 in total)- No more,
    Toyota dealers (at least near me) absolutely suck

    • @Offensively-normal

      Toyota of Hemet. It's located in the California desert. Inland empire area. They sold me a 25 SE $2.454 under MSRP.
      I got it less than a week ago.

    • @shawnbl2048
      @shawnbl2048 Year ago +5

      They suck here in PA too. But due to the demand for toyota products it's take it or leave it we have 10 more buyers waiting for it.

    • @6mtzhp55
      @6mtzhp55 Year ago +4

      I expected this too, but surprisingly they're selling for MSRP or even a little less around here. No stupid Pulse junk either. The inventory problem I see is they're almost all LE trim, seriously like 9 LEs for every one XLE or XSE when searching inventory.

      @6mtzhp55 my experience is the opposite. So many SE and XLE but barely any LE's. Prefer LE due to cloth seats in the PHX weather

    I bought my first Camry, a 1998 in August of ‘97. It has 170K. One of these days I’ll have to buy a new one but with the outstanding dependability of this one, I’m in no hurry.

      Afford huh... This camry is wildly expensive. Once you factor in taxes and fees you push 35-40k barebones and 50k fully loaded

    • @joshua9073
      @joshua9073 Year ago +3

      @GodleyXnot anywhere close $45, that’s top spec. I just paid 37,750 after dealer negotiations. No it’s not inexpensive anymore but I wanted a loaded model. People want lots of tech and great mpg’s and that cost a lot of money. I get 50.3 mpg’s and spend $56/ month on gasoline. The Camry does everything well. My first Toyota and first hybrid, not bad. I had a budget of $145,000. I’m proud that I walked away from BMW M5 Competition sedan. No regrets but I’ll sell if I don’t like it in a year.

    I just bought the 2025 LE with convenience package, I think its the best choice for the money, definitely the fastest, and the better mpg than the se or xse, I really don't care about sun roof at all, or all wheel drive, its much more quiet and comfortable due to the 16" tires.

    Why on earth would you buy a Tesla over a Camry that gives you no problems, cheap to buy and run, and great resale, well built , and will run for 30 years.

    • @carljaekle
      @carljaekle Year ago +18

      Several reasons, my Tesla has instant torque, unmatched by any gas car or hybrid. Amazing performance, and gets over 130 MPGe. A lot of tech not available from other brands. Most people don't keep cars 30 years. I am planning on 6-8. CR just confirmed that Teslas are cheapest cars to maintain of any brand. I do respect Toyota going to an all hybrid line up with the new Camry. Fuel efficiency is very important.

    Just rented the new Camry LE for two days, just to see how it works. I managed 55miles per gallon, cruising at 65 miles per HOUR, on a 250 mile trip. Subsequently, I managed 51miles per gallon, cruising at 71 miles per HOUR on a 400 mile trip. The transition from ICE to EV power although I could see it on the screen animation, was pretty much imperceptible. Very impressed with gas mileage.
    My only issue was the seats were not comfortable, and the steering was not as accurate or responsive as my 2020 Accord Hybrid, or the new 2024 models that I have rented as of late. Interior, just seemed made of cheaper materials.
    But if my only choices were the Hybrid Camry or Hybrid Accord, I would lean towards the Accord, just because of its sportier handling.

  • @seethingsclearlyawaken3424

    Hey CR, regarding the 0W8 Mobil1Snythetic oil, the oil can be easily found at Wal-Mart and some auto parts stores with the 0W8 rating. The price is along the same lines as other full synthetic oils, ranging from $25-$30 for a 5-Quart Container for Mobil1 Full-Synthetic 0W8 engine oil. I like Mobil-1 full synthetic engine oil. So, that is a good thing. Oil Filters are about the same as any other filter, depending on brand. I prefer either buying the oil-filter from Toyota or from O'Reilly using the WIX brand oil filter, which sets the filter standard bar quite high....again, with price being average compared to other name brand oil-filters.

    I went to test drive a SE it had a couple of the packages stuck on. It was stickered at $33.542. No mark up, no dealer added nonsense. I told him I liked it well enough but thought it was too much. We kept at it and I finally agreed to $31.087. almost $2.500 discount. I'm not aware of Toyota's being discounted anywhere.

    Great episode. I'm glad to hear that the CR crew will be buying an Camry SE, as the take rate of the SE in the past generation, I believe, was actually greater than that of the LE. It feels like this is the right choice for your readers. I think the criticism of the gauge cluster on the X-trims is a bit picayune; you learn the menus pretty quickly, and its also basically the same digital cluster in most Toyotas. I guess nitpicking is good, though, bc it speaks to the execution of the vehicle overall.
    Also, I loved the questions about the "sample defects." Would love to see that again.

    It means that the Camry will start at $30,000 now at minimum, and that is just the base model not including taxes and registration fees. Continues the escalation of prices. The Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon were last I remember were rated "Not Acceptable" a long time ago. I remember the Audis with sudden acceleration got that same rating as well. Plus a Toyota SUV (the Lexus GX they mention) that flipped over on the track. I am sure the Chevy Blazer EV, if they did not give the "stop sale" order to fix the software CR may have put a Do not buy on that car until it was fixed - but GM acted before CR had to do that.

    Toyota's have been selling hybrids in Europe (almost) exclusively for a few years now. Yaris, Corolla, RAV4, their big sellers, Prius (of course) are all exclusively hybrids.
    So they have had some experience on that front, and are confident about the reliability of their systems on a large scale. Which, granted, can be a scary proposition (eggs in one basket and so on).
    As for their trucks, that's a different story. I wouldn't get a scaled up hybrid system for a work truck. Rather, a diesel, turbo-diesel even, or in the US, a V8.

    We test drove a 2025 Honda Accord hybrid the other day. Was not impressed with it in the least. I didn't like the interior vent look, the metal hatching effect. We went from the honda dealer to the toyota dealer and test drove a 2025 camry xse, also after looking at which car had a better resale value, which was the camry. Both were very comparable in price, maybe by $500 (camry being more, because it was xse). I've been a Lexus owner since 2013 (my first a 2013 GX460 next was a 2017 NX200T F-Sport.) I can say, this camry, which i ended up purchasing, is top-notch! I'm impressed! I thought I'd always be a Lexus owner, you know, once a Lexus owner, always a Lexus owner. But I'm a proud owner of a 2025 Toyota Camry XSE!

    I think it’s smart to make hybrids just the regular offering. More car companies should do that and stop trying to make hybrids work when they clearly aren’t what most people want or can afford. Even if hybrids could go as far as gas cars or could charge in 5 minutes the infrastructure to charge them is still 10 years or more away.

    • @reachblowsdick7222
      @reachblowsdick7222 Year ago

      How is making hybrids the regular offering smart? Once the hybrid batteries give up it's thousands to replace and then there's the hybrid braking system that if it fails will cost as much as replacing the whole hybrid batteries. I had a Prius that hit 160K miles with no issues but once the batteries and brake recharging systems failed, the cost to replace both was almost $10K. I traded it for a regular Camry, my Prius lasted 10 years trouble free but the little money I saved on gas was less than half of what it would cost to get my Prius running normal again, NOT worth it. Meanwhile my uncle still has his old 1999 Camry with over 360K miles which he uses to drive to work everyday, and he paid $10K back then because it was pre owned. Paying $10K for a car that's 25 years old and still running, sounds like a better investment than I got for my Prius.

    • @Sashazur
      @Sashazur Year ago +2

      Yeah the style didn’t kill them. They were killed by the rising popularity of SUVs like many other sedans. Plus the later model of the Taurus got bigger outside but not inside, it became a less attractive vehicle.

    Toyota Camry gets far better with the hybrid only.
    It will increase its reliability and low TCO leadership, making it hard for the Honda Accord to come closer to this segment's leader.

    • @bbgator1
      @bbgator1 Year ago +1

      I’ve owned both. The Camry is cheaper and more reliable. The accord is very reliable. The accord is way more fun to drive and more fun to work on yourself. If you just want an appliance buy the Camry. I prefer the accord.

    bought this a month ago. excellent car. hybrid-only means that dealerships cant jack up prices for the hybrid. The LE has nice fat tires giving you a nice comfy ride on pothole ridden american roads. Handles excellent (I have an EV too and those are heavy and fat). Excellent all around visibility. Toyota needs to change the name of the transmission from eCVT to something else. It does not have a belt to go bad! Its hardly a cvt. But toyota should do a better job muffling engine noise during acceleration.

    My husband has a 2023 Camry ICE -- only because back then, the delivery time for the hybrid version was 8 months and his Honda Accord lease was up in 2. He loves it and will lease another Camry in 2026. With all of them hybrids now, there's no lag in getting one. Me on the other hand, did like the blandness of the Corolla Cross, so I lease a KIA Niro EV. Love my EV (would never get a Tesla) and in 2027, can turn it in for another EV (or hybrid), as who knows where we are with EV and hybrid batteries by then. Oh, and since we park inside our garage, I'll be getting a level 2 charge point charger installed next week in the garage.

      It’s great to have freedom of choice! I’m glad you got what you need. I on the other hand have had a Tesla for 6 years now & will never buy an ICE Vehicle unless maybe a truck. MY Midrl 3has been low low maintenance, realizable & dependable. I have 102K miles on it. Original brakes. On my my Third set of tires with first set lasting 47K, 45the second set. I will need to change the wiper blades & will change the cabin air filters again for the third time. The 12 volt battery went out in 4 years & Tesla mobile came & replaced timely at home & cost me $114.00 out the door! My F150 & infinity I took in to service station & cost me minimum$139.00 plus extended warranty! Glad it wasn’t a BMW, Mercedes or Audi then those batteries cost $500 30:17 based on coworkers that have various German cars. I did have a rear lamp assembly I had to replace due to water getting into it. Was odd. But that’s it. I plan on keeping this cars until it no longer drives or I break down & buy a new EV. At least 6 persons from my department have bought a Tesla based on my results. Let’s see how the Chinese EV invasion of cars do against all these established vehicles.

    @12:23 sure the 2.5 has a stellar reliability. But I think 3.4Turbo not helping Toyota reliability. From Turbo waste gate to main baring issues its going down the drain. I don't have much faith on 2.4Turbo either. Thank to EPA Toyota has fallen down to the same level as German & Euro cars. Look like now I don't have a reason to buy a Toyota. I would consider buying a German / Euro and use it for a short time.

  • @mss627
    @mss627 Year ago

    Toyota is definitely on the right track. The idea of improving fuel economy by turbo charging 3 and 4 cylinder engines has proved problematic over the years which is why I'm surprised Toyota decided to replace their V8s with turbo charged v6s. I would like to see them go further with hybrid technology. I think that with the marked improvements in batteries there is no reason why we can't have hybrid engines that achieve 75mpg or better. Who better to further this technology than Toyota who has become the undisputed leader in this segment? I, for one, have always valued efficiency over performance. Both would be great, but given a choice I chose efficiency.

      I live in Buffalo. I’ve always had sedans with the same type of clearance as a Camry, about 5 to 5.5 inches. Most SUVs have about 8 to 8.5 inches. If you think that three inches makes much difference on a snowy day, then you are in the SUVs stuck in my parking lot spinning all four tires while I easily cruise out in my front wheel drive sedan with WINTER tires. Don’t worry, I get out my emergency shovel, traction mats, and rock salt that I keep in my car to help all the SUV drivers that don’t buy Winter tires, and aren’t smart enough to carry these items in their stupid utility vehicle. I do get tired of people believing the car ads that show Stupid Utility Vehicles going through snow in these aggressive and reckless driving maneuvers. Proper winter tires… not the vehicle itself is the number one factor for winter driving.
