In1989 in a remote town in the west of Ireland, after some issues with crime, I was introduced to the Stones Roses debut alum via a cassette tape in a random car. wow.. They changed my life. Ian Brown saved my life. Legend 😎

Amidst a sea of Kylie and Jason, Sonja and Rick Astley, I awoke one Saturday morning and turned on the Chart Show. Then I was hit three times. The Lightning Seeds with Pure, The Happy Monday with Step On... and then The Stone Roses came on with Sally Cinnamon.
I got out of my bed and went down town to buy all three.
Music was back. Musicianship was back. Stock Aitkin and Waterman could fuck right off.
    It was heaven

What a genuinely nice guy. Watching Ian's manners versus the Gallaghers 'full-of-themselves-ness" is a stark contrast. Oasis was obviously more successful, but Ian Brown has come through the strife of the music industry as a "Sound" Person overall. Father of 3 and still there for his family. I wish him much success and hope life is kind to his family. Bravo Ian, you put up with more Bull$hit then most bands on the verge of stardom....The stone roses struggle reminds me of the Verves legal issues on "Bitter Sweet.."

@Patrick Kiely people rag oasis into it because they were slightly influenced by the rises and ultimately ended up being better.....they had more number one albums and singles and far more songs...and even their songs wer better than the roses....far more variety and genres if music in oasis songs.....even oasis B sides were far better than to anything the stone Rose's did.....but oasis were influenced by the roses and might have not existed without the stone Rose's coming first....like the stone Rose's wouldn't have happened if the musical artists before them weren't around. No one can really say who is best because we all like different music for different reasons....I like the stone Rose's but I believe in any argument you can say oasis were better.

Roses were like real poets. Noel was more cynical and direct. Noel made music to be big.. which is an art. Roses just made art with no aim to impress. Which is admirable. But they both made amazing music so who cares? Neither are bad.

Something's been bothering me lately, watching this, especially the bit about the Pistols, got me thinking about it again. What happened to 'youth subcultures'? I think the last one I can think of was that whole Britpop: Blur/Oasis thing in the 90's, it wasn't really massively influential and a bit of a throwback to other styles really. I can't think of a big one since. Is it 'cos I'm an old bugger now and they're still out there, but I don't notice them, or have they disappeared?
Back as far as the 50's, there was Rock 'n' Roll, then Beatlemania, Hippies, Punk/Skins, Casuals [more about clothes and fighting at the football than music, sort of morphed into Acid House a bit with the Mondays/Roses being Scallies] etc, then the whole Rave explosion of the late 80's, but since then, nothing major that I can really identify? Kids are missing out! I don't really like it that my 13 year old likes a lot of the same music as me. I want to be mystified at what he's listening to/wearing and tell him to 'turn that bloody racket down'/'what the bloody hell are you wearing?' like my dad did with me when I was playing New Order in my bedroom/wearing dungarees for the Hac. I didn't borrow my dad's Chuck Berry & Bill Haley records like my kid does with a lot of my old 12" records [he's particularly into my old Shamen tunes at the minute for some reason]. It's the same with clothes, he's wearing Adidas Gazelle's like I did when I was his age, it's not right, kids should be rebelling! This sort of stuff worries me, it's all gone terribly wrong somewhere.

You're right mate, Simon Cowell has moved the goal post's and the digital age has changed things for the music industry, but young people should be kicking and screaming to forge their new culture as they come into adulthood.....like we did, even if it's just a new take on something that's gone before!.....
