The sole reason I wanted to pick up a guitar and learn how to play it...I’ll never forget hearing the opening riff of Driving South & Love Spreads as an 12yr old boy & just thinking “this is the coolest thing I’ve ever heard in my life”! Still get goosebumps when I recall that moment in my bedroom back in 1994 with my old ghetto blaster
I remember seeing a blazing fire upon the hill from the view of my window a few years ago, and went for a walk to see what it could be. Turned up and saw a barn burning down, firefighters trying to do something but the fire was just out of control. The next day there were rumours around the countryside of this belonging to the "drummer of Guns and Roses". I knew instantly what band was meant, true enough, the next day there was a report on John Squire's barn at the edge of Macclesfield, burning down, with over a decade's worth of art inside. Squire was on tour with the Roses at the time I think, and I remember thinking what a tragedy that was, and how surreal it was to witness it happening. I hope the loss of the art didn't demotivate him, and that he's still shacked up, making it to this day.

Yes true, but Ian Brown wrote the lyrics and a lot of the melodies on the first album - John Squire took sole control of the songwriting on the second album and it wasn't as good. He should have continued working in a partnership with Brown.

I don't know enough about modern art to judge. Some of his work I don't understand, but some I really like - on a totally profane level! I like the man. He comes across as deeply intelligent and as a sensitive soul.
Watching in 2024, celebrating the importance of John Squire for both is visual art AND his undeniable musical genius. We are not worthy. But that's never stopped us.
I love the humour in the fact that one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters , John Squire (beautiful British name) , who once worked at Count Duckula studio Cosgrove Hall, has now come full circle by taking off the Fast Show sketch of Aardman Animation's Nick Park-alike describing each frame of a Morph episode. Anyone fancy a pint? Another Stone Roses' album would be even better although, in truth, they've made at least 3 albums worth of very good songs in total so far.
Th guy is defenetly not a rock star, I think he is a true artist, but tours, fans, interviews... it's not for him. He seems to be still exhausted from that period... He is the quiet overthinker one, I can easily relate To him! Cheers john! Great guitarist!
I live near a school that teaches 'rock guitar' and as I pass by I sometimes wonder if there are other John Squires in there ready to go for that axe only to put it down later and admit that it was 'something they did while they were growing up'. As someone who plays an instrument and watching John Squire here, I cannot help thinking 'what a waste of talent'. Why could he not do both? It never stopped Joni Mitchell, Ronnie Wood and various others. Just keep adding to what you already know.

He reminds me a bit of a sort of Bob Dylan type - whether by nature or design. He’s an introverted, sensitive chap but very creative and talented. Dylan has done a lot of art as well. The comments about the reunion were prophetic .....

Getting an interview with Squire is not easy. The worst possible thing you could do in that situation is ask him questions about the Roses...so I am pleased you didn't. The man is just into his art these days....and I hope he is happy.
@pokabeb Ian then wouldn't talk to John, and John got fed up and left to do his own stuff - first Seahorses then solo stuff. Mani hung around for another 18 months or so before joining Primal Scream. And Ian kept the name going for another year or so with sessions musicians who then became the main stay of his backing band in his own solo stuff just after.
One o the best lads to talk to on his own,,,,,,,,,,, had a great chat, and he signed some roses items,, same as billy duffy,, brilliant lads,,,,,,, total respect,,,,,,,,,,,,

After debut album, the original record label screwed them over and court dates happened, it took 4 years or so to sort out then Geffen came in and wanted an album. John was the only one creative (rumour was drugs with rest) so we came up with Second Coming. Reni felt it was too like Led Zep (strange) so he left before tour. John & Ian (best friends for years) fell out when Ian was in jail over Crimbo & John sent him a Chocolate Orange but didn't visit
It wasn't 4 years, they won the court case in May '91 - they could have made the second album then, they were just very lazy about it. They started recording in March '92, and took 2 and a half years to finish it! That album is also all John's writing, he wrote the first one in a partnership with Brown, the second one, he wanted to do it only his way. He never liked the dancier, funky side, and went in the 70's rock direction.

im the biggest roses fan there is, and i love squire and brown, but i think they are selfish in that so many of us are so DESPERATE to see it happen and not in an 80's revival way, but for them to finish what they started!!! surely they have to put petty differences aside and do it for the greater good of us all??? and John.....his arts good, but FFS he's one of the greatest guitar players of all time! cmon man get a grip
