To do this AND Sibelius in one night is simply insane. Who cares if she messed up at the very end of basically the hardest violin concerto that is still played to date. There's a reason why she won even with her glaring mistakes.
+Matthew Chow Nobody performs Wieniawski live. It is too exhausting. And all of the recordings available are not played through live. Her fingers must've been giving out at the end. This is an impressive performance. Clear to see why she won.
Sure... it's been played live before. He probably played it at around the time of his Wieniawski studio recording when he was in top form. Try finding a program these days. You'll be hard pressed to find a violinist who keeps it in his repertoire for play on short notice. Maybe you'll see it played in Poland. It doesn't reach the technical heights of Britten or Schoenberg, but it is absolutely exhausting. Wieniawski is on par with Paganini 1, but longer...
that ending is stupidly hard. not every professional violinist will ever be able to play this piece successfully...kudos to her for an amazing performance
Not quite a chord, but an opening drone/double stop, in this case - a 10th. I agree. It's for from a basic technique and the slightest intonation slip can ruin it completely!
Ok..my 10 cents as a violinist and conductor.....this is indeed one of the most demanding works to handle in a live performance....and I haven't heard another one live that was significantly better than Ms. Yoon's performnce here. I commend her for having the guts....for her genuine musicianship, tone, expression, and formidable technique. She was deserving of the award.
To all of those who are pointing out her mistake, that is pathetic. It is barely noticeable. You would only remember this mistake due to the video. She is a fantastic soloist and will make it farther than most soloists will. This is an amazing interpretation!
Such harshness directed at an amazing performance. She is astonishingly good. Any small mistake will disappear with time and experience. She is very beautiful as well as gifted on the most difficult of instruments.
With a piece as difficult as this and remembering that this is a live performance I think an error or two can be forgiven She is just incredible. This has to be the most difficult piece written for the violin. One does not hear it very often because of the immense challenges to the performer.
Im watching this video for maybe the 5th time tonite. The more I realize the tremendous work she has done so far, i.e. the Sibelius, it just seems superhuman to be able to pull off the Wieniawski no. 1.....a composition studiously avoided in live performance by many professionals. Im looking forward to seeing more of her current performances on YT.
Considering the challenging pre rounds programs and an exhausting week, playing this piece in the final is really admiring. Also the staccato down bow technique is remarkable!
i was smiling at the beginning, very proud of her tenths, how much work she had put on it to make it that clear of sound and intonation, only to cry immediately after. her interpretation is just beautiful, delivering whatever the story behind those sad melodies just right.
I am totally showing this video to those people who are complaining about "violinists losing old-world romantic charm". Soyoung perfectly combines modern technical perfection and romantic lyricism which you would hear in the turn of the century.
Hands down, she's one of the greatest soloists out there. This performance is incredible and it's one of the best. Just look at her face after she finishes it! In addition, this is one of my most favourite concertos out there and it's insanely under appreciated.
Mrs.Soyoung Woon is nowadays one of the greatest violin-players in the world, let us be very graceful for such a brilliant performances and wonderful talent!
I have such boundless admiration for her, the fact that her performance wasn't "perfect" makes it better to me, it shows how hard the concerto is, how much she pushed herself, and how much confidence she had. If she did Wieniawki 2 perfectly, I'd wonder whether she could do a harder concerto. With this - there is no wondering, she did the best she could do.
I'm more than happy that with all that formidable technique at her disposal she's is willing to push her performance level past her comfort level......many young players these days give perhaps more correct and faultless performances but what's the point if the performance isn't worth dying for.
Legendary violinist ida haendel once said that paganini was a child's play compared to wieniawski She said that this concerto was an absolute murder from the first to the last note
Słucham tego koncertu i myślę: Dokąd zawędrował ten nasz Wieniawski? Aż do Korei i tam Jego muzyka też jest zrozumiała. Ta dziewczyna czuje Polskość i naszą duszę. Podziwiam i gratuluję tego talentu młodziutkiej skrzypaczki.
That 3rd movement was waay more faster than it should be, plus this lady played this piece after her sibelius performance so I dont see any other thing than a perfect program! She was amazing!
I was rooting for her toward the end. She made a very nice recovery! Overall, it's an honor to hear her play! And it's an honor for her to be appreciated by so many.
Consummate playing indeed and I must say she looks stunning. A most enjoyable performer. The outpouring of Korean musical talent seems to be endless, how lucky for we devotees of “real” music.

To be quite honest, I'm not usually a fan of these young violinists who make the rounds of these competitions, but I have to say Ms. Yoon is quite amazing in both her consummate musicianship and unshakable technical mastery.....!

She plays amazingly well. The most difficult parts come off with brilliance, ease and grace. My profound admiration!!! The little accident towards the end is due to a too early decrease of concentration. You have to keep it up right to the very last tone. I do know what I am talking about because I once had a similar experience. Right before the ending I thought be myself "Alright, you've made it" and at the same moment it happened.
All you nay-sayers obviously do not realize that this concerto is one of, if not, the most devilishly difficult in the repertoire! The second Wieniawski is a walk in the park compared to the first! I would rather do the Sibelius and the Paganini #1 back to back than tackle this concerto! It demands EVERYTHING from the player!
It´s mostly decimas, not octaves. Somewhere on the 4th/5th page you will have octaves, that´s about when she starts playing from 8.34 somewhere there you will have octaves.
