    The great (or one of the great) things about Marillion is the chord changes. The band sometimes take days or even a week just working on a single chord change... which if you listen to interviews with h frustrates the hell out of him. But when they make music like Afraid of Sunlight, or this album, you realise it's time very well spent. Amazing band.

    First song immediately reminds me of the album Afraid of Sunlight and albums before that one with Steve. Love it, makes me emotional 😢.
    The rest Different at the start but also great. I can’t keep my eyes dry with this kind of music. I think the feeling of being uncomfortable due to the war in the east need a way out. Music is a great way to get rid of stress.

      "The Yes Album" was released in February, 1971. "Fragile" was released in November, 1971. IMHO, the content of either album was not harmed by the fast release of both. It troubles me that it took AHBID five years to be released. Le us hope the next album isn't half a decade away from a release date. But let's enjoy the release we just got and not worry about the next one.

      @@Yesquire0 Ahh, but i am not worried about the next album - just worried, as band members approach 70 years old, if indeed there will be one.
      Remember, they are not 1970's Yes. Every two years without a pandemic in the way, is a normal output.
      So, even if this is a finale - it is out on a high note - but my fingers are very firmly crossed for one, or may I dare hope, two more studio releases.
      That will make Ian be approaching mid-70's in age, if a two year gap is maintained.
      So as I say - my fingers, and indeed toes, are firmly crossed - even while I am thoroughly enjoying this one.

      Just regarding the 'Greta T' lines... h loves a bit of playful wordplay, and he's clearly playing on the fact that 'Greta T', run together, sounds a lot like 'regret'... and it's perfect, because it's a song about the next generation having to live with our generations' regrets, having to grow up too soon and be the ones to try to bring about a change before it's too late.

    In The Crow and the Nightingale there's the one flaw in the recording or the mixing of the choir. One particular female voice sticks out every time in one particular note every time and I can't un-hear it.

    I found that first song here (I forget the title) to be quite good.
    However, if I'm being completely honest, Sierra Leone really didn't do anything for me. Nothing against the band meant by that, it's just not to my preference.

    Meanwhile, at the Marillion FB page, the moderator for the page has announced that the band is going to end its presence on the page for an unspecified amount of time due to fan negativity regarding AHBID apparently affecting their state of mind or heart. It seems like an extreme over-reaction to me. Fan response has been mostly positive, with a minority generally offering up opinions about how disappointed they are with the political messages and the "wall of sound" approach that many also viewed as a weakness of F.E.A.R.
    Marillion has generally been copacetic with all the copyright violations appearing all over RUclips as people in love with the music of Marillion relentlessly upload most of their back catalog. But they have always previously been miffed by uploads of recent releases, and it is a huge change in policy for the band to themselves immediately upload every song on AHBID for free listening. My guess is that, after working on this project for five years, and polishing it to what they see as their very best work, and after adding the girls from In Praise of Folly, plus a choir, they expected universal acclaim, and maybe even, at last, a breakout into the entire world of popular music a la Phil Collins' Genesis. To discover that some of their lifelong fans don't think it is all that much probably burst their overly optimistic bubble. Realistically, nothing artists can produce should be expected to excite and entertain everybody.
    Personally, I never listen to Marillion studio products. Hogarth sings way to meekly on them, all too often hovering in a zone in between his true voice and his falsetto in a whispery way. It's not at all pleasing to my ear, but he seems to love that zone. So, I am not surprised that I'm not onboard yet with AHBID. I suspect I'll like it a lot more once I've seen and heard it live at the Montreal Marillion weekend in July. Live Marillion is ten times better than studio Marillion. And a less than gobsmacking new release from Marillion is still better than 99% of anything else out there. Musically, AHBID is, indeed, quite beautiful to hear, but upon first listening the movements within the longer songs seem disjointed, and the transitions a bit abrupt, but I imagine I'll grow used to them to the point where that will no longer be an issue. With my politcal views being apposite of Hogarths on many issues, the lyrical messages interfere with my enjoyment of some of the songs.
    The original point of "progressive rock" was to create new music filled with new sounds unlike what had come before it. That was a lot easier to do back in the classic era when electronic sound modifications expanded the palettte of both guitar and keyboard sounds. All prog artists risk some fan alienation if they remain true to that ethos. Marillion has changed its sound to a fuller, more orchestal one in their last two releases. Some fans have described it as "sonic sludge", and they long for a simpler approach like what was presented on "Marbles".
    The presence of political messages regarding climate change and Covid on AHBID also made the moderators at Marillion web sites allow for political debate on those issues in the comment sections where political posting had previously been totally verboten! Those debates quickly turned nasty and exposed the fallacy that Marillion fans are one big happy Family, and I imagine that, too, upset band management and the members of the band.

      it's hard to know whether the band withdrew because of the small number of critical points made by fans or because of the extensive whining by fans who had not received their pre-orders, as the band's message announcing their withdrawal talks about both

    • @Yesquire0
      @Yesquire0 2 года назад +1

      @@dingbat19 That's a good point. Signing all of those copies was a modern day version of cleaning the Aegean stables, and the band has no control over the delays in accustomed delivery times due to the world-wide disruption in supply chains. It might also explain why the marilliononline uploaded the songs. There does not have to be one reason for the withdrawal. People are rarely so simplistic.

      I've never seen Marillion as "progressive rock" or "neo prog". I've been on a journey with the band since 1983 and to me they're just Marillion, and I feel so lucky to have them around and still making exquisite music.

    • @Yesquire0
      @Yesquire0 2 года назад

      @@JoshMainka I'm willing to try to identify a musical genre that fits Marillion. I don't know why the sub-genre "neo-prog" exists other than to serve as a place to put prog bands that did not have their heyday in the early 1970's. To me, Marilliion can readily be categorized as "symphonic prog". I draw the line, though, at trying to describe their music in tems of what other bands they sound like. They sound like Marilliion.

      It’s not the Marillion official FB page but the “Marillion and fans” group that they - and that is effectively Lucy and Ian - have taken a break from. Lucy reads everything and tries to respond positively to as many posts as possible so it doesn’t surprise me she needs to get away from it for a while. I’ve muted it for 30 days myself because of the quantity and repetitive nature of posts. In a group of 20,000 + members you’re always going to get a few wankers who deliberately try to wind up the majority by incendiary posts of an extreme nature.
      I don’t see Hogarth’s words as political but humanitarian. If people are offended by a humanitarian viewpoint, then so what, who cares?
