In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, we're listening to music by Marillion for the 2nd time on the channel. Estonia is from their 1997 album This Strange Engine, but today we're listening to their remake of the song that is included on their 2019 album With Friends from the Orchestra. The song's subject is heartbreaking, but the music is astoundingly beautiful. I hope you'll come along for the ride!

People always want to make it a competition: why not Fish AND Hogarth? Fish-era was probably more consistently great, but Hogarth-era has had plenty of highlights, including my favorite Marillion album in Brave.
Been a fan since their debut. I love Fish, but I think H is better. They're both great in different ways!

Marillion are amazing- and no one can tell me that Steve Hogarth isn't one of the finest singers ever in rock. A simply beautiful voice
I lost my wife to brain cancer...just 5 years ago. Marillion was one of her...and one of OUR favorite bands.
This song makes me cry every time...and yet I can feel her close...if only for a few minutes.

There’s the Marillion with Fish; Clutching at Straws, is a great album. And there’s Marillion after Fish left.
More great albums to choose from. Afraid of sunlight, is one of my favorites.
Clutching at Straws never gets old for me. Love that album. It's especially good listening while driving a car alone at night on a quiet, dark highway.
I've been a fan of Marillion for 40 years and have never been disappointed with anything they produce. The with the Orchestra album was great and even better when I got to see it live .

Yes it is! After Fish left then band I had trouble accepting the new singer, but when I finally got the Brave album I realized Marillion was a different band, just as good as it was before.

You are starting to understand why Marillion’s music connects so emotionally for many fans. As others have suggested. Try The Great Escape, The Space ( live at Royal Albert Hall with the same friends from the orchestra) or Neverland.

Urmas Alender, a beloved musician in Estonia, also sank that day. Some survivors have said that he clung on a chimney and was singing before sinking with the ship. He also had songs about how sea would take his life.

One of the most underated bands about, wonderful reaction Doug try "The Space" live at the Royal Albert Hall next Marillion at their best.

My wife loved this song, when she passed away suddenly, at only 31yrs of age, i couldn't think of anything more appropriate to play for her at her service. Whenever i hear this song, it makes me think of her, an i smile at her memory.
So sorry for such a devastating loss. The song always brings me to tears, remember when the news mentioned the Estonia had sunk with so many trapped inside or drowned in the ice cold water. Heart breaking 💔 😢

Fantastic. So glad to finally see a reaction to one of Marillion's best songs. I saw them on this tour, and H told the story of how he met Mr. Barney and how the song came about. His sympathy for the victims was so genuine, and we could tell that Steve had been deeply affected by the tragedy. His lyrics are so perfect. This version is great in a different way, with the classical instruments, but the studio version is also fantastic with the Russian balalaika in the choruses and Mark Kelly playing the instrumental part of the bridge section with a perfect synth patch. Great, great song.
The Brave album is dark but beautiful journey..
Agreed. I suggested it awhile back, a couple times IIRC, but Doug didn't seem interested. It's probably too long for one reaction video. Plus it starts out slow and he might lose interest (?).

Marillion's songs are simply way above what anyone else in the rock/pop music genre is writing and recording and Estonia particularly, among others, is the proof.

I have recommended this in several creators' comments - maybe even yours. You're the first person I've seen to actually cover it. For those who haven't... "their loss". They're missing out on brilliance. It's a bonus that you're one of the rare people on YT who actually understands and can talk about/break down the music.
Marillion is half-jokingly referred to as "The best band you've never heard of". For years that's been pretty much true. It seems like that might be changing these days, as more people are introduced to their music, which is wonderful. Marillion deserves so much more recognition.
This is gorgeous and, as you say, "heart breaking" song. It's far and away my favorite recorded performance of it. It's one of those songs I wish everyone could hear and appreciate as you do.
Steve Hogarth has one of the most emotive voices I've personally heard in progressive music. I doubt he's ever phoned in a performance in his life.
Also, the smile that keeps returning to the face of the violinist on the far left (their right), in front of Steve Hogarth, is infectious.

I went to a sound check in Manchester where Steve Rothery had said he’d sign my guitar. It was one of his acoustic Farida guitars. Steve Hogarth came up and said ‘who are you?’. He spent 20 minutes talking with me. What a band, so talented and humble

Please react to 'The Space' live at The Royal Albert Hall, and it's one of The first appearances of FFTO , The Performance, Sound ...Wow!!! Plus .. lyrically will blow you away , and the track was last track on 'Season's End' debut of the Amazing Hogarth. Back in the 90s .
This is a great album, This Strange Engine. The opening track is great, Man of a Thousand Faces. Simple and powerful, with an epic closure .

Doug, that was your best episode yet! Yes, Marillion is a remarkable band--IMHO the most underrated progressive rock band of them all. Check out the DVDs of their various Marillion Weekends and you will see how much their fans adore them. Given your classical background, I'm not surprised you appreciated their With Friends From the Orchestra, but there is also a live version called With Friends at St. David's. I think you would really enjoy that.

Their concept album Brave is still among my musical "reference fews". It could be a possible album for your long reactions.

I came to Marillion only about 5 years ago and their music is wonderful. So many of their songs you should give your educated treatment to! The first thing I heard was "Neverland" I would recommend This song. Many thanks I love what you do, and how you do it. Keep on Keeping on,as They say!

Never heard this before. This is why I listen.
I want to the Marillion fan convention weekend event in The Netherlands in 2017, 2 weeks after my father died. They played this on the first night and I was a blubbering mess from about 30 seconds in.

I'm glad to see someone so enthused by Marillion. Death and water are recurring themes in Steve Hogarth's writing. I would like to add my voice to those suggesting Ocean Cloud as the best of the band's longer songs. The Great Escape is a bit like the best bits of Marillion crammed into a relatively short piece. It gives a good picture of what the band is about.

Doug, you should listen to some Fish era Marillion. Maybe Script For a Jester's Tear for the album of the same name, The Bitter Suite from Misplaced Childhood, Fugazi and from the album of the same name or the opening trilogy from Clutching at Straws.

I am very familiar with this song - I've listened to it, possibly, a hundred times or more over the year - and yet I really enjoyed listening along with you. You seemed genuinely touched by it and that in turn seemed to increase it's power
With Fish, there was some more aggression, rebelliousness and attitude in the songs but now, with Hogarth, they are more delicate, subtle and heartbreaking. Both versions of the band are amazing, and we are all blessed to enjoy the music they have presented us.
Could not have put it better. Fed up with the "Fish was far better than H" brigade. Enjoy it all!

@Andrade....exactly!!! I've been on the Marillion Appreciation Train from their inception. Losing Fish was a shock...but after listening to the growing list of masterpieces by post Fish Marillion, I'm sold on Steve H. I feel so much intense emotion from Marillion with Hogarth. Personally...although I love both versions, the present line-up is my favorite version of Marillion. 👍👋

Estonia is a great song written when they were already experienced musicians. It would be interesting to see an episode on Grendel, an amazing 17 minute epic they wrote when they were in their early twenties.
Grendel is a must.
@@nornog At least some of he band members hate that song and use it as a punchline. I'd rather see Doug react to more recent epics like "Ocean Cloud", "This Strange Engine", "Gaza" or "The Invisible Man" where they perfected their own style of epic songwriting. They are way past imitating Gabriel period Genesis at this point in their career.

Wasn't grendel one of their first pieces and fish's "audition peice", as his audition was to write lyrics to this instrumental they had.
I think I saw a slight smile on the young lass playing the violin, she (and all others too) must have been enjoying playing all these songs together in this setting like this.
I have been a fan of Marillion for a long time, this is my alltime favorite, though there are many good pieces in their entire ouvre.

Being Swedish, it's hard to ever forget the Estonia disaster. Out of 850 deaths, more than 500 were Swedish citizens, making it comparable in size (number of dead swedes, that is) to the tsunami of 2004. No other accident in European waters have been deadlier during peacetime, and this happened not so far from the Nordic capitals of Stockholm and Helsinki and Estonian capital Tallinn where she sailed from. There have since been many conspiracies and new investigations since it's still not completely sorted out what the actual reason was for the ship to sink. I'm pretty sure one investigation is still ongoing as of today since it's been on the news a couple of times this year.
Come to think of it, I may actually have had a Marillion t-shirt on the very day she sunk back in 1994, as I used to listen to them quite a lot back then. They were pretty big here in the early 90's.

Thank you, Doug, for sharing a great piece of music with so much depth and sympathy. I am especially touched because I visited Estonia a few weeks bevor the tragedy (July-August 1994) and made friends there. And since many of the victims were Estonian and Estonia is a tiny country I later learnt that so many (if not the majority of) estonians know or even come from a family who has lost a loved one. I assume they would love the Marillion song and you commenting on it.

@@mortenbay I'm a huge fan of sounds that can't be made. Fear is a mood album. Needs a certain head space. White paper is my favorite on it.
I have been lucky enough to know the two Stevens from Marillion what utterly lovely people they are, zero ego and this song never fails to give me goosebumps and thanked them and the band for their contribution to my life. Such an emotive song and the Marillion back catalogue is really something to behold.

Love both the reaction and analysis, even its extension into the discussion on the virtues of music as an art. This is a beautiful song, and Marillion's catalogue is a gold-mine. So many here are making great suggestions, and it would be hard to go wrong picking any of them. For my money, "Afraid of Sunlight" (and the lighter "Afraid of Sunrise") and "Gaza" are favorites. Doug, I’ve watched your Genesis and the other Marillion reaction and thought how awesome it is that a classical composer can get this amount of joy from this music. As a fan of both I tend to cut through albums not really giving a listen, and I decided today I was going to watch your reaction to Estonia. Absolutely beautiful piece and you’re absolutely right!

Hi Doug. I love listening to your narrative about how music, I love that you have found Marillion too.
In 2019/20 the longest time ever, the Marillion gang put out a video just to know they were still here each playing from their own homes.
So Lucy the manager asked if we as fans would listen to the song and throw our flags around from all over the globe. So they were suprised and brought out Made Again second time around with us bunch of nutters making a lovely gesture both ways. Cannot wait til end of May the convention in England. Wonderful people who got me there.

Absolutely magnificent piece of music
Hi. It is great things to watch my favourite band live. The emotion is much more raw and seeing the passion on their faces is why they are still going after 43 years.
Some of their songs are light and some more dark.
One of my faviourite songs is Invisible man, but non live does not give the praise it deserves. Also the whole of the album Brave is one long album telling a tail... that is also amazing live. But one of my favourite albums by them. Hope you enjoy them more and more.

2012 recorded in studio just before the passing of mr Jon Lord.

I commented on another of your videos about Marillion. Didn't know you had already heard them. Fantastic group. I first heard them with Misplaced Childhood, 1985. Hauntingly great lyrics on that one.
