In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm talking with Steve Hogarth, the longtime lead singer and lyricist for Marillion. Our discussion touched on his early influences, his approach to writing lyrics and evolution in his and the band's songwriting, activism and humanitarianism through the band's music, their new album (An Hour Before It's Dark), and even a sneak peek at the plan for their setlists for Marillion Weekend in Poland in just a few weeks.
I hope you enjoy. Thanks to Steve for his time and thoughtful dialogue.

I am okay to admit that I was a difficult convert to Mr. Hogarth. I was, and am, a huge Fish fan and I love the first four Marillion albums. But as I have matured and grown and given more things a chance, I have grown to love the second chapter of Marillion as well. Excellent interview....

Very well done. I have had the opportunity to interview H twice and it never ceases to amaze me how down-to-earth and humble he is. He doesn't downplay the influence Marillion has had on the music industry, but neither does he seek the ubiquitous pat on the back many musicians would expect if they had a part in reshaping the way the rest of the world sees and treats independent artists. A great guy and a wonderful band. Cheers!

I met Steve in 1989 for the Season'e End tour because my former drummer and I won backstage passes. We got to hang out with all of them and they were great people. Steve was so charismatic and different than Fish, but hte audience embraced him from the get go. An amazing sweet vibe from a billiant singer and lyricist.

It was a well-spent 45-minute, I loved to listen to two thoughtful, caring people talking about music, humanity and social issues. Thank you Mr.Helvering, thank you Mr.Hogarth. By the way, I'm 54, a Marillion fan of 35 years, they are my number one band. I admire their musicianship, their bond and the respect they have for their followers. This is an amazing little podcast, thanks to both Steve Hogarth and to host Doug - some great questions and revelations in here. I'm gaining more respect for Steve and his thought process and lyric writing as a result of having heard this - and yes, as a Marillion fan since 1985, I already knew his vocals, songwriting, and musical sense to be top notch. (Very few could have followed so credibly - nay, brilliantly - in the oversized shoes of Fish after he left the band; after all, Fish really was in a league of his own among leaders of progressive bands, but Steve in his own right has done a great job with the band, as Fish himself acknowledges.) Plus ... Steve displays a much deeper understanding of what's going on in the world-at-large than most of us, probably by virtue of extensive reading and education but also due in no small part to having been tasked to come up with these serious and obviously politically very hard-hitting lyrics. Good job, Mr "h", and thanks to you, Doug, for inviting him on!!

Oh, Doug this was so amazing, Steve is a great conversationalist and a brilliantly observational artist. I have listened to many of his interviews and podcasts. In 2018, I had the privilege of seeing Marillion in concert in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I have to say, it was probably the musical event of my life because it was so good. We drove nearly 8 hours through an ice storm to see them and it was so worth the effort to get there. Should you ever get the opportunity to see Marillion, by all means, you must do it. I knew of Marillion prior to Steve Hogarth and he really gave the band, in my opinion their legacy, their raison d’être. He is the man for the job, for sure. Thank you, Doug!!

All respect to Hogarth and Marillion during his tenure. It's indisputable that he brought something essential, and that the band today is defined by his role in it. And I agree with other commenters that having the interview focus solely on the Hogarth-era Marillion was without doubt the right approach.
That said, in the broader context of your channel, please don't overlook Fish-era Marillion. The importance and musicianship of Fish's own contribution to the band's history cannot be overstated. Those first years also contain some amazing work, all the more impressive for how ground-breaking it was at the time.

@@brucewilson3619 No. The last US tour was in February of 2018.
2016 was the last time they were in Canada in the context of a regular tour (if we don't count the Montreal Weekend in 2019).

Doug you should really check out their live masterpiece
    Neverland (out of season 2009)
This will blow you away.. Steve Hogarth's emotional vocals and Steve Rothery's stunning guitar work make magic together 🖤🖤

Always loved Marillion but when Season's End came out after the Fish era it took my breath away. Hogarth is a great singer. HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT DOING A REACTION VIDEO TO JEFF WAYNE'S WAR OF THE WORLDS?

If you react to "Neverland", the best of the many live versions, IMHO, and that of many other fans, is the 2009 "Out of Season" dvd version. Make sure your wife stays beside you for that particular reaction. She could wave at the camera and whisper "Here I am." ruclips.net/video/l3NhNz9-EOA/видео.html

@@traumadiffuser3705 I may perhaps have spent the entire show standing behind Rothers' guitar amps wearing h's spare in ears in case he keeled over, but I couldn't possibly comment :D

I like the fact that Steve feels he can still express his feelings in his lyrics, especially in a world where social media are now silencing us. Free speech is being oppressed unless others agree with you. Thanks Steve

Interesting that Steve raised the topic of his lyrics being played back to him in Argentina. I have been involved in research where we have taken lyrics from artists with an extensive repertoire including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, David Bowie etc in all these artists their lyrics follow 3-4 distinct themes

Please, react to "Neverland" from the Out of Seasons 2009 DVD and, as Hogarth himself just mentioned, "The Space" from Royal Albert Hall. I´d love to her your profound reaction on them. It´s the most intense holistic Marillion experience. Pure magic. Hogarth reveals all he is. I followed your explorational journey of my 40-year-favourite band, and I turn 50. Marillion live is something different, there is a certain feeling of unity, congeniality and humanity spreading in among thousands of people. They all become soulmates as they sing along being touched by guitar solos and connecting their own experiences with their essential lyrics. I´d love to her your profound reaction on these performances.
