MAN this makes me so happy. I'm so happy Mario is getting mainstream attention in the drum world. He is such an inspiration to me and drummers worldwide. To many metal drummers fall into the hole of sounding too "robotic" but Mario adds that human groove element on top of his super tight double bass and impressive hard hitting technique. No he's not. Let's see him play like Thomas Haake from Meshuggah or Marthus from Cradle of filth or even Francesco paoli from Fleshgod apocalypse. Some serious blasting drummers.
Double-strokes on the feet are actually really easy, you just need someone to show you how to play heel-toe. It has a reputation for being difficult, but you just need someone next to you to give feedback on your foot motion. I taught a friend who can barely play rock beat one how to play a double-stroke roll (albeit rather sloppy). If he can do it, you can too.
Drumeo has a video explaining it, but I think Wyatt Stav’s videos on it are better. He provided exercises as well. I struggled with it for years until I watched Wyatt.
@@brandondefalco8843 Yeah, Wyatt Stav's video is good. I learned from Derrick Pope's video. There are two kinds of heel-toe, and Drumeo video specifically teaches *not* to play the kind Wyatt and Derrick play, but I think it's a good idea to try both variants. The Drumeo version is more "classically correct", but the other version is much easier to learn and is great for getting cheap and nasty pedals to respond. I would recommend anyone having problems with heel-toe -- without access to someone who can sit next to them and correct their technique -- to watch as many videos on the topic as they can until they get it, as all these videos have different tips and tricks for getting it down. I'm thinking of making a heel-toe troubleshooting video with all the different tips I've come across and common errors. One good tip is to place your foot diagonally along the board instead of straight, which gives you more leverage and emulate a longboard pedal.
@@brandondefalco8843 No worries. The difference is whether or not the heel actually hits the footboard. Jared's method doesn't, which is fine, but I didn't get that technique until first I could do the technique where the heel actually hits the footboard.

Slightly off on the ride/bass in the parts where all the sixteenths get filled up with snare ghosts. It sounds like you play a (syncope?) triplet, whereas Mario keeps to sixteenths? I'm not entirely sure, but the timing feels slightly different. I think 66Samus said it's the same rhythm as the half-time breakdown at the end, except the breakdown is half tempo and, as far as I could hear, you played the half-time part perfectly. Fantastic job! I love how you were struggling with the double bass singles so you just ended up putting in doubles which would be harder for most lol!!! couple little nuances in the part that were missed. The beginning little sixteenth triplet is actually a quintuplet. so instead of RLRLRL R, he's going RLRLR L. It's very subtle, but Mario does this for sticking purpose so that way his right hand is always on beat one. Second, that fill that's in the chorus, what i'm seeing you play is RLLR RLLR LRLL "RLLRLLRLLRLL"R LRLL RRLL which is like some weird off time thing that isn't in the song. The original sticking is just sixteenth notes RLLR RLLR LRLL RLRL LRLL RLLR LRLL RRLL. These are just tiny little nitpicks and only show how much goes into Mario's playing.
This blew me away, hats off to both the original drummer for this song for creating such unique drumming and hats off to the instructor for picking it up so quickly and relaying it perfectly. I'm blown away from the start just watching the slow beating of the snare to transition into quick triplets. When I get home I'm definitely going to have to practice! I'm badly disabled so I will never be a "good" drummer or in a band but now I know something I can work on. I struggle with tempo changes and just watching you play I realized I make to large of movements, even when I'm playing as fast as I can. I noticed that on the snare you start with big movements but the faster you play the closer the drumsticks stay to the snare/each other.
