Today we are talking about a repair that annoyed me to no end over a decade of console repairs and was the cause of many long nights and PS3 horror stories for repairs. The Yellow Light of Death is a general hardware failure for the PS3 and at the time had little to no documentation online leaving it up to many of us to figure out through trial and error what was going on.

My little brother kept an original 360 that was beat to hell alive by wrapping it in towels and overheated it on purpose whenever it gave him the red ring😂 worked every time
"When your console is sick, has a red nose and you wrap it until it's healthy again." 🤔
Yeah, I remember this was a popular early method of getting around the easier-to-deal RROD situations when they appeared. Not the most scientific nor ideal way to solve the issue but hey! It worked.
Had my ps3 slim since it launched. That thing is a champ, still going strong
PS3 slims were built well
a lot of optimizations on those systems compared to the fat versions. more chances of surviving longer
Same lmao got it my junior year of high school and that was 12 years ago 😂 works great to this day.
Same here I love it
the power draw of the slim is HALF of the OG console, so that alone will make the system more durable because of the less heat
I remember working in a photo development lab. So many people would bring cameras in saying "I found these in the attic/ basement. Can you develop them?" So many had roaches we'd start wearing gloves and opening them in plastic bags just in case
I remember destroying a disposable camera after taking a few pics and the film came flying out. I genuinely thought that I could just bring the now light exposed film to a film development store and have the pictures developed
A lot of people remember the seventh generation of consoles for catering to casual audiences.
I remember it for broken consoles and sending them in for repairs
The days of when we would put our boards in ovens
I wrapped my 360 in a towel hoping to re “melt” the solder to connect the apu back to the board 😅😅
when my original, full-hardware BC unit finally got the YLOD, the slim had just come out. I paid some d-bag on ebay to fix my console. He did a piss-poor job of putting it back together (damaged plastic bits, missing screws, etc) it looks like he put the board in an oven (goddamn thing was singed). Luckily, it remained functional just long enough for me to do a full backup to an external HDD, then it shit the bed again. I picked up a slim, restored the external to the new unit, and picked up where i left off. I actually still have that same slim unit today, and use it pretty frequently for games, netflix, amazon prime video, etc. Had to repaste it a couple of years ago, and i maxed out the storage space. It still runs like a champ.
True story, I did a xbox 360 repair back in 2015 that ended up costing me $6,500. I found the xbox in the trash one night on my way home and had dollar signs on my mind when I found it. I thought it would be a quick cash grab and it ended up having bed bugs in it that unfortunately ended up infesting my house.
Reminds me of when some guy wanted you to repair his cockroach infested ps3 lol
How did that even happen lol
@@Cyborg647 you’d be surprised how often it happens actually
or the dude who left his ps3 for 3 years and got mad when they won't give it back to him lmao.
@@Cyborg647german cockroaches LOVE electronics and warm spaces.. so if you already have a mild problem in your house..😕 bound to get worse. Especially with electronics. They stay around stuff other than consoles too!
Honestly Mystic Ryan random Video Game lot buying series is so addictive.
Or the random accesories
Facts
Yes basically mystic ryan is the Playstation version of spawn wave
Let’s Talk Playstation is basically a Playstation theme of spawn news just on the weekend over daily.
Yes love those videos
Did not expect The Wonderful 101 sponsor lol. Greatest action game ever!
saw it in rgt85s video today as well good game.
@@smgofdvld Hopefully it gets more people interested. The game deserves much more imo. Pure joy
@@jubjub6330 not worth the money
wii u version was better tbh
Wonderize Blue!
Jon is not just a Video Game Gangsta, he's a Re-Baller! 😎👍 Great video! I used to fix boards like this too and re-balling was very tedious! It pays to have the right equipment! Cheers!
I worked at a Gamestop ~2010 where we had a PS3 traded in that was infested with roaches. I took it in and the awful smell and...sticky case of the PS3 had me excuse myself to go to the back to run it by my manager. He didn't care, said to take it in anyway.
And that's how our store got a really bad roach infestation for months.
This channel, Mystic, Digital Foundry are among my favorite gaming channels.
BRO!!! I was literally watching that video this morning of the top four scariest console fixes you uploaded a while back omg 🤣
Friend scared to death for their memories “are you sure this is how it’s done?...”
Me putting their fucking ps3 in my oven next to a Mexican style pizza “yes.”
lmaoooo my son
did the pizza taste good?
@CryptoMillennial Be careful!!! Putting electronics in the refridgerator or freezer can generate moisture on their circuit boards and if that moisture isn't dried and you turn the unit on it can cause a LOT of problems!
@CryptoMillennial I get it man no problem here
I just wanted to spread the info so others don't make a huge mistake
Why were they using unleaded solder?
I really want to see mysic ryan and spawn wave collab video
That's a coincidence, I spent my Saturday trying to repair a PS3 with a yellow light.
I gave up for now, but will try again when I have a lot of time.
I've been incredibly lucky with consoles throughout my life. I've never had a console fail on me.
Same I do treat them like baby’s though
I’ve had consoles fail on me, but not ones that I full on use. I did have one time when a Xbox One power brick failed. This was in 2014 when it was still really new.
Everybody gangsta till Jon gets pissed from your console repair...
😂😂😂😂
The best comment
Lmao 🤣 Jon is the tech guru
It turns out that.... no one was ever "gangsta" to begin with
I JUST NOTICED THE OUTRO MUSIC IS BACK!!!! HELL YEAH!!!
O ly for the weekend videos- they get copyright claimed so no more newswave with that outro
The worst repairs I always had, was the ones where people said "Yea I put my xbox 360 in a towel and it worked for a bit, now it won't anymore".
lol I've done that and it fixed my 360 for about 10 or 11 years (before I sold it still working)
I had a friend use that method that lol
Shit worked every single time
As someone who is thinking about getting into the repair business, I enjoy hearing about the goods and the bads when it comes to repair experiences. Thanks for putting out another video!
Oh man, I'd love to have my old ps3 re-balled.
I had to get it repaired for YLOD twice. I no longer use it because the repair guys said that if the first fix doesn't keep, the odds of later repairs keeping would just drop. So I paid for a second repair, got all my data backed up, and keep it stored in a box. No idea what I will ever do with it. It was the last backwards compatible model. It was nice to be able to play PS2 discs on it; now I gotta pull out my PS2 for that.
These story videos are very interesting, please do more!
The techwave videos are my favorite videos from my favorite channel. Spawnwave is always a blast but these are just so useful.
Awesome video man! I have a Backwards compatible PS3 and not looking forward to the day I have to fix it but definitely appreciate the findings you did for the community!
Between the 3ds and the PS3, Jon must have been quite the specialist.
the rrod single handedly added 12 million 360's to the total lifetime sales number lmao
Thank you for your hard work, love your videos!
How did I know I know Mystics video would catch your attention lol love his channel. Keeps it leveled and he has a passion for gaming.
Love spawn wave love these kind of videos where you talk about repairs thank you
It’s not every day Spawn posts story time, but I gotta says it’s pretty interesting hearing personal stories like this!
Finally! I’ve been waiting for this for a long time! Thank you Spawn
I love seeing actual games sponsoring videogame related videos, not raid shadow legends or completely unrelated products or services. Keep it up man! I love this kind of videos.
when i worked at gamestop i would check systems for infestation, and one time a lady came in to sell a PS4. I popped the lid off and there were a bunch of dead spiders crammed in underneath the lid and on top of the hard drive. Im not arachnophobic, but man did that give me the shivers.
It must have been pretty cool to be on the cutting edge of this issue as it was happening. And you were able to fix these PS3s. I’m sure you made a lot of people happy. Just out of curiosity, how much did you charge for a reballing? For such an intense amount of work, I can only imagine it being pretty expensive.
Still think that the Wii U Version of Wonderful 101 is the best Version to play the Game.
facts.
"is he gonna tell the roaches story...." Yup.
Ahhh good ol Pro Console Netherlands haha I remember watching that video as an ASMR video to put me to sleep. Good time listening to the tear down and repair.
Really enjoy your repair videos. Great job.
Did you come across red screen of death?? This happened to my original PS3 where had red screen post in deferent languages but will not boot to main screen.
Doing a job that not even Sony wanted to do, and they made the systems. That’s dedication and I applaud you for it, John!
Jon wasn’t a fan of Wonderful 101 now he’s sponsored by them?
Money here comes the money
Money is a powerful thing
He's just securing the bag lol
Money talks. Always does.
maybe they respected criticism
Know the yellow light of death well. Gave it to my brother for parts 😂
My Uncle had 5 different Xbox 360’s break from the red ring before just giving up on the console and a couple years later just got a PS3.
Thats crazy, meanwhile i still have the same xbox 360 slim that came with the kinect way back then. Its in storage now but just this year i pulled it out and it still works fine. Needless to say that ive been with xbox since i saw relatives ps3s no longer working
Wow, he really wanted to play Gears, huh? I figure after the second one, I would have jumped ship!
I’ve had the arcade since it came out and it’s still running
Not an uncommon tale with the original 360
@@andresbaron5189 Yea because with the slim and the elite or whatever the ones that no longer have removable hard drives and capacitive clickless 'on' buttons you might notice half of the console is a gigantic vent because part of the problem with the original was overheating. This doesn't mean it's invincible. All that air flow means it's probably clogged with shit. I'd recommend you open it up and clean it out if you want to continue using it
I really found this interesting! Great Video!
You really should do a step by step reballing guide. Would be a great thing to keep more ps3s out there.
Interesting video. Thank you! I was wondering if you have been doing the re-balling and replacing the 90nm with the 40nm?
It's great to see you shout out to mystic. He makes some quality content 👌
I did this back in the day. I remember buying a heat gun just for this repair. I didnt reball though, just replaced the thermal compound
Great job Jon!👍
and I'm reeeeee -guitar strumming-, re-balling!
The years that I used to work at a computer repair store.
Anything that came with roaches will be mandatory with a hazard fee.
( $35-55 depending on the item)
Make this a series there so interesting and informative
Got a free fat PS3 earlier this year and it had some CE error. Googled it, followed some steps, did a hard reset, and now it works perfectly. The 60GB is my PS1 now since I’m too lazy to fix the laser on my PS1 lmaoo
If anyone runs into the issue with roaches getting into the power supply, do get the power supply fixed, then either contact an exterminator to get rid of the roaches or contact your landlord to have the roaches removed. Seen three consoles get destroyed by roaches, it’s disgusting and very embarrassing
"You bring me roaches? I take it back"
I make a signature that says if it’s infested badly that I reserve the right to either force you to come pick it up or I throw it in the trash two days later.
It's interesting to watch this video with the information we know now vs what we thought was the issue only 3+ years ago.
I love this series so much!
Honestly, my repair shop would consist of a heatgun, a pillow case, some pennies and some arctic silver 5.
Eyyy artic silver. I actually knew the owner for a short time.
you smothering 360's and PS3's with that pillow? LOL
@@Resolve_DigitalMedia clearly you arent well trained in the arts of overheating consoles 🤦🏻♂️🙄
I like Mystic Ryan, he has some good content. I especially like his unboxing videos.
Really enjoying these stories
The triple beep still gives me Vietnam flashbacks. I had the 60GB Phat, the Cadillac model, bought in 2007. Then around 2009, it YLOD'd. Sent it to Sony for repairs. Got it back working, then died again a couple months later. Tried the whole reflowing thing with a heat gun myself. Again worked a couple months, then died. I eventually caved and bought a Slim. That generation was notorious for bad hardware. At least anything with chips on the 90nm process. Launch PS3s had something like a 10% failure rate after two years. Ironically, I had bought the PlayStation3 SPECIFICALLY because the 360 was having so many problems. The powers-that-be certainly have a sense of humour.
The stuff of nightmares.. hope you never have to face that again anytime soon
This man is a living legend and I won't hear a word to the otherwise. How many ps3s must still be working now because of the work he did back then!!
Love Mystic Ryans videos ( especially the eBay random lot unboxings and the documentarys on PlayStation are really well made . Of course let's talk PlayStation is always awesome every week ) . He would be awesome on the Spawn cast .
i still have my launch day ps3 from 2006 and i've done a ton of maintenance on it to try to keep it alive for as long as possible (cleaned, re-pasted, cooler power supply, better fan, new cmos battery)... but i'm still too afraid to de-lid the cpu and gpu 😓
Bless, that is some amazing commitment you've shown to keeping your PS3 alive Kanzuki. :) I love my Playstation 3, I actually own 2 of them but my 60GB CECHA model (The PS2 compat version) I've kept in storage because I never want to see it get damaged, to me I'd rather see it preserved than damage it by overworking it. My primary is actually a PS3 super slim because while they may look fragile they're actually really well designed and easy to repair if ever there is an issue.
There was a time where my family owned a PS2. At one point my little sister spilt water on the console, but by some miracle it survived!!!!
Your never gonna believe this story but here it is. While I was at work My pipes in my ceiling burst and started dripping profusely. I finally came home to find the water had fallen almost perfectly onto and in my Xbox one. So I immediately rushed over to pick it up to move it out of the way and when I picked it up and tilted it, a good 3 gallons of water came gushing out of it. I thought it was toast from then on but just to try, I put it sideways in between two space heaters on low and the water eventually evaporated, and the thing still turns on and plays to this day, years later. I thought for sure it was never gonna work again
@@snusemcgoose1001 DANG BRO!!!!!!!
So right before John started the Spawn Wave channel, he was universally known as Repair Wave thanks to his expertise and know-how about PS3s hardware quirks and how to deal with them.
That thumbnail was oddly nostalgic for some reason.
Huh?
It was nostalgic to me just because that PS3 model is mega nostalgic man... so many good memories of hours and hours of LBP 1+2.
No reason; it's an original PS3?
It's the original PS3 that plays PS2 games.
He made a similar video with a ps3 and roaches in the thumbnail a few years ago
So I guess your value in reballing made you a legend in the repair field there
The iFixit video is a great watch! 👍
Just purchased a backwards compatible PS3 with the YLOD. Hasn’t been worked on, so I’m about to send it for repair.
I got one backward compatible but it has red blinking a light as soon as I turn it on. Havent been able to fix with the possible solutions from youtube and web search. Any ideas what it could be?
Awesome video btw
Reminds me of my original PS3 60 GB. It suffered a power surge through the AV cables (I shit you not) thanks to a former friend's shitty TV. I didn't have access to any repair shops around where I live at the time, so I just had send it to Sony to repair it. I got back a refurbished 60 GB which, thankfully, still works to this day. My guess would be something akin to a power surge happened to you as well. I'd search for a repair shop since I doubt Sony will help now.
So I’ll put this here. Does anyone have any recommendations for people who repair systems? I have a couple I need fixed but I don’t know anyone
Me too. Steer clear of the reballing genius, I know that much.
you can see at least two people in this video
Those NEC capacitors are actually (was) expensive and pretty nuts in specs. You can watch videos about them. At the time were on high-end motherboards and GPU's.
love your stories of being in the console repair trenches
These console repair videos are the best
I have honestly never heard of the yellow light thing until this video!
Hello Spawn Wave, I start to consider getting Backward Compatible Ps3! I would like to know that yellow red dead light is %100 to happen? Or this is happen for some of them like rare situation? You looks like have some information about it. Please let me know! I follow your RUclips channel and I try to understand it but I need your consultation.
YLOD repair is balogna. I spent thousands of dollars on BGA rework machines, jigs, stencils, ect. The problem was the chips or components around the chips failing not solder balls underneath.
Always wondered if you and Mystic Ryan know each other. Would be cool to see a collab.
one of the coolest things I've seen come out of these repair attempts is the "frankenstein" mods. People take the original backwards compatible boards and swap the faulty 90nm RSX for the later 40nm models which basically solved all the GPU hardware flaws. People do similar things for the Xbox 360 too like swapping swapping the Xenon GPUs for the later 65nm GPUs. It's not really worth doing for the Xbox though unless you're trying to save a devkit. For the PS3 backwards compatible boards though it's great!
Since the ps3 store almost died this month I have been tempted to purchase Drakengard 3...It is worth it? Also does anyone know its price?
I really wish I'd sent my BC PS3 YLOD to you back when you were still doing repairs. It still sits in my closet waiting for the day when it can be reballed.
Do you have any suggestions for a disc drive on a PS4 Pro that won’t read DVDs specifically? Games and BluRays read fine
Hi i have a cechc02(60gb bc) system recently bought and 2 40gb fat models. Can any fan swapping/ power supplying swapping be done to ensure the cechc02 system stays alive for longer?
Yep, in hindsight the 2 biggest PS3 issues were the NEC's. And the IHS's
How important is it to remove the heat spreaders vs leave them alone and just renew the thermal paste on the outside? I'm worried about damaging trying to remove them. I have an original 60G with low hours original owner, no problems thus far but will be looking to do a few things in near future.
Nice sponsor may need to get that demo
I have a backwards compatible ps3 that yellow lighted. Any clue where I could send this thing in to be repaired?
I still have my ‘yellow light’ ps3. Haven’t found anyone to fix it and there’s no way I’d be able to do it myself. Do you still service these?
Righteous, in autumn 2019, my ps3 super slim kept turning off before it'd fully start up. I had it since Christmas, 2013.
The best way to prevent this from happening is to turn off the main power from the back after use. The PCU gets so hot even in standby mode, constantly cooking all the internals. Just turn on the console during use.
My best friend's system got the YLoD, and I'm not kidding, nobody in the entire country would touch it with a 10-meter pole.
We didn't have a choice, we tried the heat-gun trick. His PS3 ran for another five or six years after that :D
Yeah, it was probably nothing short of pure luck, but I've found you need some of that to get through life :D
I been lucky I haven't had any troubles with my latest PS3 backwards compatibility I bought about 2 years ago
My CECHA01 PS3 still hasn't got the yellow light of death yet, and still plays games.
Sadly I think the PS2 chip fried so when I put in a PS2 disc it just gives me corrupted video noise, even though pressing the home menu still shows the proper menu where you can swap memory cards and whatnot. Even the audio still works and you can navigate menus(blindly) and start a game.
Wish I knew how to fix it, but sadly seems I'm the only one on the internet to have this problem.
I have an 1st model ps3 that is fully backwards compatible that yellow ringed. Sony fixed it. Anything I need to know about it having problems?
I'm from Belgium, and to save my data (but also the bluray of Jurassic Park in it), i've sended my PS3 Fat (first gen) to an obscure repair shop to the other side of France. Imagine the cost to send this heavy thing to another country just to save my datas ... I was stupid back then ... but i'll definitely will do this again if needed :D
Sort of similar situation for me but on customer computers. I worked at Geek Squad back in the day and laptop failure rates were high back then (not physical damage, but general failure), which is odd because it was the same time in which 360 and PS3 were having major issues (maybe MOBO manufacturers had issues back then).... anyways, someone brought it in, it was nasty, i go to open it up and cockroaches come out of the vents. at that point in time i could not perform a repair on it as it is deemed a health risk at that point.
I still have my original PS3 Fat 60, it's working, but after 30-45 minutes the fan get very loud.
I presume it's in a state very close to yellow light.
I tried to find a way or someone to fix, but it did not work.
No stores want to fix it to prevent total failure of my machine.
Any ideas......
You need to remove the heatspreaders and replace thermal paste underneath
My ps3 had YLOD 3 times it's currently fixed🤞but do you still offer this service? Or could you make a video of you repairing one?
