Hyacinth is so pleasant and funny when she's drunk. It's a wonder everyone that knows her, especially Richard, doesn't immediately press a glass into her hand to "defuse" her.
@lidia bonini Yes. This is wonderful. My favorite is the Chinese Takeaway compilation. And the accidental stealing of the Rolls-Royce, due to many streets where you couldn't get back to dealership. They alight at a luxury hotel for tea, and then are arrested by police for driving a stolen vehicle. Laugh your ass off!
There weren't quite enough of "our sort" about the place... lol that is SUCH a Hyacinth thing to say! :-D Poor Richard "ready to crack" lol, and who could blame him?. R.I.P Clive, fondly remembered by many.
As soon as Hyacinth finds out people think Richard is a Prince, she'll be inviting Mrs. Counselor Nugent and Lady Ursula over for a candlelight supper with "His Royal Highness"
I work in Technical Support for an unnamed retailer here in the UK.. I have spoken to plenty of people who have done something similar with the pronunciation of their names in order to make them seem more posh. I always come away from those conversations thinking that they are a massive Hyacinth....
I’ve been watching this show since it came on PBS back in the 90s. I put it on to watch with my boyfriend. He instantly wanted me to turn it off. I kept it on and gradually he started to crack up. Greatest show. Brits really beat Americans when it comes to humor!
Good for you, for keeping it on. It's not the type of humour most people are used to. It is delightful though, once you start watching it. I started watching it at the same time as you, 90's PBS. So glad it was available for us to see.
I wouldn’t agree that they beat Americans in humor - it’s just such a different type of humor. There’s something very self-deprecating and quick witted about the humor of British Sitcoms, which I live for, and often miss in American sitcoms....but we do have our moments too. I always thought Frazier was really well done, if not a tad bit British in style, and Big Bang Theory is hysterical in a completely different way. Though I will admit, I watch way more BBC sitcoms than American: “Coupling,” “Mrs. Brown’s Boys,” “Are you being Served,” “Faulty Towers,” etc.....
David Orcutt American sitcoms are pretty repetitive and follow the same formula. I noticed British might take more risks. I enjoy both but definitely think British are more skilled in comedy than Americans.
left onread I completely agree - which is why those American sitcoms that break from that repetitiveness are usually the ones to do the best. But not all people understand, or even like British humor. My mother loved it...which is where I got my love for it it. My father, on the other hand, hated it. Sometimes he would just stare at my mother as if saying: “what are you laughing at... they didn’t even tell a joke yet!” LoL. And the funny thing is, my father’s sense of humor was very dry and almost British in style - but he just couldn’t appreciate it when he saw it on screen.
The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Golden Girls, The Joey Bishop Show (first season), Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Frasier, and Buster Keaton and Jerry Lewis are the most inventive, surreal and psychological comedians I've ever seen. I'm firmly in the American comedy camp, British humour can be a bit unsophisticated and pantomime, with repetitive catch phrases, whereas American tends to be more surreal, psychological, inventive and sharp. I quite like Keeping Up Appearances but no way as much as American humour. I'd recommend a series shown I think in the 90s called Root into Europe, that is very clever, dry and satirical, and Waiting for God, they are two British comedies that are sharp and well written.
Mollie Sugden and Patricia Routledge play the "drunk" exquisitely! In this episode, Richard drives to Daisy/Onslow's home because Hyacinth insists she needs to see "daddy", and she falls backwards on the hedge when she passes the car with that dog (who doesn't like her so barks at Hyacinth).
The very last line in the show is the funniest when she's actually nice to Onslow and says "Hello." and looks up at him.... but you have to watch it to get the joke..... My favourite episode !
That episode was a hoot 😂😂 Oh our Hyacinth” Daisy and Rose. Hilarious show it was. I love Patricia Routlidge, Geoffrey Hughes and Clive Swift. Both Geoffrey and Clive are sadly now Resting up in acting heaven. Thank you gentlemen for your humour, talents and humility. Much appreciated.
That’s funny stuff. I’ve made my own fruit wines in the past and I can attest that they can be quite powerful. My blueberry was quite delicious and potent. I don’t really drink so I don’t bother making it anymore. Maybe I’ll try gooseberry one day.
"One of my candlelight SLIPPERS" Oh that made me laugh 😂
I am so happy for Hyacinth, she finally got her wish to be invited to meet a lord!
I am not happy at the moment
🙁

yes the heartfelt kiss on his cheek would enflame any man married to her
What ya think they used to do to the Queen Mother??? haha!!!
She only accepts wine from “her sort of people.” Her husband is too plebeian to get her drunk.
"We shall most definitely be having a glass or two of the Dowager Lady Ursula's Homegoosewadeberrymine" 😂😂😂😂
Yeah at her candle light slipper
And I love how she says that two more times, but completely different. 😂
How I wish I could have seen the Queen's reaction to some of Hyacinths funniest scenes,. X
Gee she is a talented actress. How funny.
This is an all-time classic scene. I wish they'd shown the rest of the scene, where she barks at Onslow 's dog.

Hahahahaha really?
And the old woman who's in the car barks back!!

I'm sure he gets a lot behind the scenes. Probably why he still stays with her

My absolute favorite episode of KUA. Patricia Routledge is a magnificent drunk! LOL
Almost as good as Dick Van Dyke, he's incredible, I've never seen anything like him, stupendously talented man.
Gives me a great laugh everytime, she plays a drunk to perfection
No dirty words, no questionable content, just good fun.
Alcoholism is still involved though.....XD
