What he did was so sweet. You can tell she was very moved by his tribute. Two of the Hollywood greats.
I remember watching that night and remembering William Holden's warm acknowledgement of Barbara Stanwyck. What a class act. You can tell it totally caught her off guard. How beautiful she looked that evening too. We don't have enough of this in this day and age.
@Pat Tyson Today's stars, bless 'em, just haven't got that mystique. A couple come close, Meryl I suppose, but it was all down to the studios creating a sense of magic around each personality, to make them appear 'not quite one of us'.
@@andrewthornhill7042 I totally agree. I often say to myself that Meryl is the "last great movie star". I don't think any one actor of group of performers will be seen in the future the way we saw them in the past. Perhaps that's healthier. But the sense of "mystique" is alluring - I agree with you!
@@andrewthornhill7042 I would also like to add how shameful it is that the only memorable Oscar moment we have this year is the Will Smith incident.
RIP William Holden, Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Fontaine and Bob Hope
Rest In Peace
What a beautiful moment between Stanwyck and Holden! True legends, I miss the likes of them. :(
When I was 5 years old and heard the sound of the opening theme, combined with the Star Wars title by 1977 in theater, ¡I stayed in shock! 😲 that's was epic... and the lasers sounds... change the films forever. Greetings from Monterrey, México. 🤙🏼 5-4
she looked amazing even then; her skin was really beautiful. And what a nice gesture by Holden...
Holden & Stanwyck. Now that was movies. Joan Fonatine, in her last Oscar appearance, was great. Even trailing that group of unchivalrous men who leave her in the dust!
What that Visual Effects team did in 1977 for SW. Is nothing short of amazing. Did they changed the face movie making. No one had seen special effects like that before done so well. The talent that was around in film making in the 1970s and 1980s is nothing short of incredible. Its no surprise all the best movies ever made came within the span of those two decades.
Beautiful Joan Fontaine
Such a deserved award, some of the best effects of all time.
Star Wars has great sound mixing and visual effects.
not great, but incredibly amazing
thanks
I think the most compelling thing in this video was Bill Holden’s story.
JJ Abrams was inspired by her dress.
Igoriell Aastakhovsky Ha ha! I got it! Good catch!
I just spat my dinner out. Epic comment, Sir. :)
Angry Ewok Which dress?
Hahaha lens flare

1:57 Wow, what for a voice! I love her!
Back when at least some stars had class..
heading should be 'barbara stanwyck and william holden steal the show'
It was only ILM's first assignment, THE FIRST ASSIGNMENT!!
Barbara Stanwick was always beautiful and one of the best all time actress
I love Joan Fontaine. A true screen goddess.
Fontaine was highly underrated.
Was her sister there that night I think she was
@@hardsam68 There was a face-off in the powder room! Oscars at 20 paces!
@@hardsam68 She was. They were even put in adjacent hotel rooms but had them quickly changed lol
Just realised John Won for Bond film Thunderball too!
Talk about not being able to see the forest for the trees. This is one of the greatest Oscar moments of all time and it had nothing to do with the winners but everything to do with the presenters: two of the greatest stars of all time. Why comment on the way the names are said? Jeez.
These are both very interesting presentations. I was surprised to see Dykstra, as well as Stears, and Blalack so gracious to Lucas and Kurtz. Stories of their parting with Lucas put them at odds and of course these three gentlemen did not go on to make any further Star Wars movies. Edlund, the third Visual Effects speaker, however, stayed with ILM and finished the Star Wars trilogy as well as Raiders of the Lost Ark.
2:55 that movie is underrated as hell. Very good
Yes, “Sorcerer” is a great movie!
MARAVILLOSA JOAN FONTAINE !!!!!!!!!!!
Joan Fontaine, most beautiful face in Hollywood.
Fontaine was absolutely stunning, no one in Hollywood at that time was her equal.
@@texan903 Merle Oberon maybe....
so well deserved, the fact that this movie didnt win best screenplay, director and picture is an absolute crime
It would already be "likable" just because of WIlliam Holden's thanks to Barbara Stanwyck.
The awards shows where so much better back then.
Barbara looks stunning.
How influential was Star Wars to cinema and culture in its day? Just watch the likes of Bill Holden, Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Fontaine, and Bob Hope spend an entire evening talking about it!! 8^D
@Angus Ng
And it kicked Paramount Pictures hard enough that they finally settled on whether the sequel to _Star Trek_ was going to be a TV series or a movie.
Love William holden
Star Wars just dominated the 1978 Oscars
And Raiders of the Lost Ark would later dominate the 1982 Oscars.
I remember seeing the Oscar in the house of Derek Balls,It was well deserved and look good where it sat. He went on to do so much more in the film industry. I now have a son in the industry my self as a writer. I wish his daughter and his son all good luck. david
They don't do these types of presenters anymore!
Barbara is 100% class. So beautiful!
You have great taste!
I was 12 years old when I went to see Star Wars at the theater. I'm so happy the hard work is being rewarded. Long live STAR WARS
Could you please post Olivia de Havilland's appearance in 1988?
RIP, Robert Blalack.
I'm 49 and I only know of William Holden from I love Lucy reruns...
berighteous Really? You should watch "The Bridges of Toko-Ri." Great movie about US Naval pilots during the Korean War.
I'll have to look that up. Thanx!
Holden made some classics in his prime. My favorite is The Bridge on the River Kwai.
berighteous Catch "Stalag 17" and "Network". Two of my favorites.
+berighteous Watch "The Wild Bunch".
those are some happy hippies
Love the presentations, but I think the presenters should say the film first. It's so awkward to hear them read a list of names long before the film on which they worked.
Los genios de starwars
Increase the sound!!!!!!
I like how the host comes over for a few seconds and then leaves. Great idea, bring it back ...
As if there was any doubt with this one..
WHAT????? Now I HAVE to see it
What happened to Ben Burtt?
Woo hoo!!! Go Star Wars!!!
What was Gerry Adams doing there @ 4:18 ??
I believe that's George Lucas.
I’m surprised from looking at this comment section that there isn’t much comments expressing complaints of Lucas changing the original visual effects that won the Oscar. There’s only one comment I found that complains about that fact.
4:37
Clásico de culto
Nice dress.
Joan bless her she really struggled with those names
Sorry. I wasn't speaking about Holden and Stanwyck specifically. I was talking about all presenters of the non-acting, non-directing categories because they often have many nominees per film. I just think it's better to simply say the film instead.
Speaking on the presenters for a change, I loved the reaction on Stanwyck's face when Holden began his affirmation.
Don't assume all commenters are looking for something ill to say. Everyone knows how awesome this moment was from the start.
Can't believe Kanye West's dad (Ray West) won an Oscar for Star Wars lol
I have a feeling you're just kidding, but in case you're not, it's a different Ray West, obviously, since this one is white. Also, Kanye's dad was an ex-Black Panther.
@@musicaltheatergeek79 The violent group or the king?
......And the rest is history
Until 1997 when George Lucas altered those Oscar-winning effects with now outdated CGI
@@Reesej0520 Well, for the dewbacks, rontos and Jabba the Hutt... yes. But the CGI on the X-Wings and Tie Fighters during the final battle don’t look too bad.
Too bad Lucas has prevented people from actually SEEING those award-winning visual effects on home video releases since the late 90s...
Matt Furtado yea you are right he has, now that Disney owns them all with the purchase of Fox, hopefully we will get to see them
boooiii her dress was brighter than my future
Bill is 60 old and he looks like 80.
It's called heavy drinking.
I just love talking pictures lol
Holden looks angry!
The oscars where such a mess back then
Who are these old farts?
Oh, just a couple of people with class. You wouldn't like them.
