Never was an Oscar more deserved.
+iHatebologna59 except for encounter of a 3rd kind, indiana jones, ET, schinler's list, superman........
+iHatebologna59 Agreed. It's a masterpiece
+le veilleur non silencieux Well Schindler's List and ET did win for their scores.
EXACTLY!!!!
Nah, should've gone to Hamlisch.
Lol. JW is one of the most important people in the history of cinema entertainment. And this is his opus.
He won and lost at the same time.... Epic.
Only John Williams could beat John Williams.
Just winning or just losing is to mainstream
Thata so awesome
well Steve Soderbergh beat himself in 2001 for best director. ^^
As did Elton John in 1995
If King Williams is gonna lose to anyone, might as well be to himself. :D
+Hassaan Mirza King Williams, wow. I'll be using this from now on.
Lol.
You are exactly right.
When you yourself are the toughest competition to yourself, you’re a legend.
When you tear up because you know now how iconic this score has become...
You can tell he already knew he was getting the award
They must have told him beforehand.
Of course he didn't know, but he had two popular scores in the running, so he was the odds-on favorite.
@@Finians_Mancave That's actually not true. Being nominated twice in the same category is quite unfortunately because often it results in a "voter-split", where most agree that you were the best, but the votes are split between the two nominees. This has happened countless time throughout oscar history
Guido Anselmi which makes the fact that he still won that much more impressive and deserving lol
@@huntersteele1712 very true!
John Williams is so badass that the only competition Star Wars had of not winning, was to himself with his score for Close Encounters of a Third Kind.
John Williams is a gentleman.
John Williams is the man. He has won five Academy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, seven British Academy Film Awards and 22 Grammy Awards. With 49 Academy Award nominations, Williams is the second most-nominated individual, after Walt Disney.
berighteous It still isn't enough. He deserves more awards!
berighteous His five Oscar wins were BTW:
1971: Best Original Song Score or Adaptation Score - "Fiddler on the Roof"
1975: Best Original Score - "Jaws"
1977: Best Original Score - "Star Wars"
1982: Best Original Score - "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial"
1993: Best Original Score - "Schindler's List"
Like you said, John *IS* the man! No film composer can match his amazing genius. Personally, here are the top Oscar-nominated film scores I wanted him to win Best Original Score for:
1. "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) ("Imperial March" FTW)
2. "Return of the Jedi" (1983) (The music during the Battle of Endor was epic)
3. "War Horse" (2011) (The music was so beautiful IMO)
4. "Home Alone" (1990) (Yes, he scored the first two "Home Alone" movies if you didn't know)
5. "Memoirs of a Geisha" (2005) (He did receive the Golden Globe for Best Original Score for this film)
*LONG LIVE JOHN WILLIAMS*
+darthstarkiller1912 you forgot jurassic park
Star of Bethlehem from Home Alone is one of my fave John Williams compositions. Just too beautiful!
His Harry Potter score was magical too.
This is like giving an Oscar to davinci or Einstein or Mozart. This is cinemas God. Period.
Well, the composer for Close Encounters of the Third Kind had to lose to someone, right?
LOL!
hahahaha. looses to himself.
Probably the most well deserved award in the history of the Oscars
To think he lost an Oscar to himself lol
So did Alexandre Desplat in 2014 when he won for The Grand Budapest Hotel and lost for The Imitation Game 😄
Williams up twice. That says it all really.
Henry freaking Mancini presented the award for John, that's freaking amazing
John Williams taught me to love music. He is one of a kind. Star Wars, Superman, Jaws, E.T., Indiana Jones, Schindler List, Tintin, Get Me if You Can... Who can give more?
Harry Potter!
You are right, Emily: Harry Potter's theme is also wonderful. I have always wondered if it could be played as a waltz: the best waltz composed in the 21st century!
Fiddler on the Roof
The Poseidon Advenure
Empire of the Sun
Memoirs of a Gheisha
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Jurassic Park
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Home Alone
That's Williams...he is a very polite and reserved gentleman, it isn't that he didn't feel, he just doesn't openly express emotions, doesn't wear it on his sleeve. He's a quiet person.
And filmmusic was changed forever.
Brilliant score but actually a throwback to Korngold-type soundtracks.
NOMINATED FOR TWO CLASSIC SCORES AT ONE TIME.
NO FILM SCORE HAS BEEN MORE DESERVING THAN STAR WARS WAS TO WIN.
NOT ONLY WAS IT THE CLEAR WINNER, BUT IT'S PROBABLY THE GREATEST FILM MUSIC EVER WRITTEN.
AFI just voted Star Wars as the greatest movie score of all time. We're all lucky to be living at the same time as this genius.
John Williams is truly a legend.
The BEST film score composer EVER, close to 50 nominations, has there been anyone else other than him?
Two nominations the same year! John Williams is genial and unique.
May the Force be with you John Williams.
Star Wars has great music score.
The soundtrack made me really appreciate classical music!😗
So does Close Encounters.
Why do you think it won lmao
John Williams was the piano player on some of Mancini's early albums, including PETER GUNN.
"we're here to give the oscar for outstanding original score. obviously....star wars is going to win."
Try to make 2 classic filmscores in one year and be nominated for the oscars. Only Williams can pull that off.
After earning the first of many Academy Award nominations, starting with 1967's "Valley of the Dolls" for best adapted score in 1968...but 11 years later in 1978, John Williams got both Oscar nominations for scoring "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Star Wars." But "Star Wars" which he won an Oscar for best original score.
He is without a doubt the GREATEST composer of music of my generation. He is my third favourite composer after Mozart and Wagner.
The Binary Sunset score is the best score in the movie! So well deserving!
He could have won for either of his nominated films that year. Very different kinds of scores, and both brilliant.
I have waited for a Oscar video of John Williams for a ling time, thanx for uploading :D
I love how the music was played a bit slower when the award was presented because there is only one conductor who does it properly
This is a history moment.
The saga wouldn’t be the same if not for the ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLY STUNNING SCORE
John Williams is a genius. my favourite composer by far and the most Oscars nominated man in history 18 nominations!
the word legend is said too often in this day and age nut in musical circles this man IS a LEGEND!
potterpotty01 Now it's up to 51 .. and counting !!!! 😊
John Williams :
“Never tell me the odds”
Binary Sunset is the greatest piece of music ever written, by anyone.
The living legend, Mr John Williams... bravo!
Total robbery! IMO, John Williams should've won instead of John Williams that year.
the master jedi of the music
the most deserved oscar of all time xD
Actually, the two men are friends and greeted JW first as Oliva stepped back. He hugged Olivia as he left the stage.
Damn he looks so young!!
One time, John Williams farted and it was nominated for an Oscar.
Was it during the production of The Last Jedi?
Ah, yes. The score for "Heartbeeps."
@@waterspout8 You can't compare it to a fart man haha it was great actually
OMG this is so old!
Anyway, John Williams is definitely the best of the bests! He's made so many memorable themes for legendary movies.....Best composer of all time IMO.
He needs a huge room for all the awards hes won and he deserves all praise he gets :)
Wow, the house orchestra took the title theme at a really slow tempo. No suprise, it's a tough score.
Sometimes the Academy gets it right.
The best Franchise and film score Thanks John
One of the many reasons why I love John Williams music, it's because his music is so old school and hearkens back to the glorious Golden Age of Hollywood days of Max Steiner and Erich Korngold; along with non- film score composers like Gustav Holst and Richard Strauss.
A New Hope has one of the most epic film scores ever recorded! Well deserved
Mozart could've scored a movie in 1977, and John still would've deservedly won this Oscar.
Pretty much.
He had two nominees, the odds were certainly for him.
loot6 He's John Williams. The odds are always in his favor.
Not Always, In These ceremonies 1972, 1984, 1987, 1989, 2001, 2005 and 2011 He had two nominations and hadn't won any!
Yet as much as Star Wars is iconic, I'm more kinda Closer Encounter of The Third Kind guy!
Tell that to the Deak
Haytham Faisal Star Wars’s score is very powerful and very emotional. While Close Encounters is very emotional, it lacks the power that Star Wars had. However, I’m not sure a truly powerful score would’ve been all that appropriate for Close Encounters.
I wonder how many people really realize how much John Williams' music enhanced the movies it was attached to... The theme for Star Wars was, and is, just so epic in its scope that it lent a validity to the story that before then was really unprecedented in science fiction movies. I heard a story once - don't know if it's true or not - that when John was asked to do the theme for Star Wars (Steven Spielberg had recommended him to George Lucas because of the excellent theme he did for Jaws), George was asked whether to make the theme "serious" or "Space-y" and George made the correct choice of "serious". Ben Burtt's organic sound effects and ILM's ground-breaking effects also are what made Star Wars the mind-blowing success it became.
Great job all around!

JustWasted3HoursHere hi. **** I think "You will find ~ a ITALIAN COMPOSER - Ennio Morricone" did it 13, 12; 9, 8 - years earlier! **** Not Convinced = "A Fistful of Dollars" 1964, "A Few Dollars More" 1965, "Oscar Snub/ NON WINNING" 1 = "Once Upon a time in the west" 1968, **** Biggest Oscar SNUB \ TRAVESTY = "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" 1969 : NOT WINNING - "Best Score". **** Despite being ~ to this day : 2017 "Forty Eight - years LATER" ; the GREATEST - "Movie Score" of all TIME! **** For the "RECORD" : if the Best Score - Academy ~ had awarded Excellence : then "1968 & 1969 - back to back OSCARS for Ennio Morricone { " An HONOUR only EQUALLED in "1977 & 1978 by John Williams" } ! ****
George Lucas once said that the only thing about "Star Wars - A New Hope" that exceeded his expectations was John Williams' brilliant SW score. Imagine being such a legend that you actually beat yourself.
I find it interesting that John Williams, at that time, was already an established music composer, with several oscar nominations and a win for Jaws. But he still had to sit way back and had to hurry up onto the stage to get an award. And why were all those people standing against the wall. Were seats really that limited back then?
John Williams should always win.
so well deserved, the fact that this movie didnt win best screenplay, director and picture is an absolute crime
John Williams receiving an Oscar from Henry Mancini. Too much epicness from the two of them :D
and John getting the Oscar from Olivia, JOHNNY GREEN and HENRY MANCINI, and the warm congratulation he get from his pairs for being awarded for what is arguable the best score in cinema history ever, what a memorable moment
The only challenge to Star Wars that year was Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
John Williams was competing with himself. 😂
Incredibly well deserved, and still remains one film score that just about everyone seems to know.
short and a sweet speech, y cant they all be like that
Came here to see my favorite film composers first win after Ludwig Goransson won the other night. Had no idea he won and lost to himself. That’s just, as Williams puts it, Marvelous.
He's the second most nominated person in Academy history, second only to Walt Disney. He was tied with Alfred Newman until he got 2 nods in 2012 for War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin.
Henry Manciini gives an Oscar to John Williams
What’s a classy man!
I have actually never seen this. Wow. Big Thanx.
A very classy speach
@MajCinematic Well, you can't, but I feel that Star Wars is a strong score in terms of thematic significance and the layers of symbolism within the notes of the themes. Close Encounters is a brilliant score, but Star Wars will still be a score which is a little more memorable.
I have to say it ... (I'm a huge John Williams fan) How could he pass up a hug (or possibly a kiss) from Olivia Newton-John? That's Nuckin Futz!!!! (and best score ever, of course)
Man, the blood that would have been shed if the Academy f++ked this one up...
oh my god, john williams is so great! 5 oscars!!!!
Do you have Jerry Goldsmith's win from The Omen 1976?
Okay, if your nominated in the same category for two different films in the same year, surely your one of the greatest ever.
He's so awesome he's his own rival.
John Williams, a filmcomposer for the eternity!!!!!
Forgot that John Williams competed with himself for the Oscar that year! But both STAR WARS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND were great scores, and I'm glad they were both nominated.
and history was made !!
John Williams is a musical genius, no one can invoke such emotions like him.
Choice that year was a no-brainer.
@90sambabam2 And by then, that was his third. HIs second for Original Score after Jaws (his first win was for adapting Fiddler on the Roof). HIs first was four years later (E.T.) and his fifth was nine years after that (Schindler's LIst). Still a bit weird that he hasn't gotten more.
Star Wars is now exactly as many years old as the Best Original Score Oscar was when John Williams won it for Star Wars. John Williams' biggest failing was not giving Olivia Newton-John a hug and kiss.
JOHN WILLIAMS IS THE MAN!!!!!!!
The most popular score from start to finish in the history of cinema; prove me wrong.
Oh! Olivia!
Hearing the theme play while he walked up to the stage gave me chills. I can't imagine how crazy it must have been to have lived through the original Star Wars craze!
I'm old enough to remember the original SW craze and it was really something. I first saw the movie three weeks into the original run and remember vividly that when Luke destroyed the Death Star, grown adults got up out of their seats, threw popcorn in the air, and cheered and clapped. I was just a kid but even as young as I was, I murmured to myself, "This is gonna be BIG!"
I was born a decade after Return of the Jedi. I first sat through a SW movie when I was 11.
Chuck Norris has to check his closet for John Williams
Maestro!
Has anyone ever deserved it more?
I think we all know the answer to that.
I'm crossing my fingers because I want John to get an Oscar nomination and hopefully a win for "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens". Knowing he's doing the score will surely make fans forget about Disney owning "Star Wars". John deserves at least ONE MORE Oscar considering he hasn't won one since his score for "Schindler's List" back in 1993.
He only got nominated.
I don’t believe he deserved the Oscar for TFA. The Hateful Eight’s score is a lot more powerful. I think Williams should’ve won for Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The Prequels scores I think were worth nominations, but that’s just me. Williams deserves to have a slew of Oscars. Shame he only had 5, but at least he has some Oscars. That’s more than some people in the industry have.
Amazingly, this was Williams' third score Oscar!
Im watching this instead of the new oscars
Rei John Williams ganhando o Oscar é a melhor coisa
Not is only the music from a film, is part of the music of the world history
Masterpiece!
Oh, c'mon John! You hug the old guys but barely acknowledge the lovely Olivia?!
I wish this man never aged....
THE only film composer in history to be not only nominated twice in the same year but lose TO HIMSELF! John and his music will always have a special place in my heart.
