Star Wars Visual Effects, from AT-ATs to Tauntauns

This vintage featurette opens by detailing the chess game played between Chewbacca and C-3PO in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The creatures in the game were animated via stop-motion then superimposed onto the chess board, with a visual trick giving them a holographic appearance. The scene took place on the Millennium Falcon, itself a model, photographed by a computer-controlled camera. It was shot stationary on a blue screen, which allowed for different backgrounds and other moving objects to be added later. The same technique was used to create the film's dogfights and Death Star trench run.
Matte paintings were also a heavily used form of visual effects in A New Hope. During Obi-Wan Kenobi's deactivation of the Death Star's tractor beam, Alec Guinness was shot on-set. A matte painting served as the background, with a spot left open for the footage of Guinness to be inserted.
Mark Hamill narrates behind-the-scenes footage from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, in which Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett work on the tauntaun sequence. The miniature tauntaun is animated one frame at a time by hand via stop-motion. It takes the two one hour to create one second of finished stop-motion film. The same technique is used to animate the AT-AT walkers, shot on a set of baking soda and microscopic glass bubbles. It took nine months to design and build the AT-AT models, many of which were different sizes to create an illusion of depth. The snowspeeders from the Hoth sequence were also miniatures and shot on blue screen, either stationary and filmed with a computer-controlled camera, or controlled on a line for explosions and crashes.
In creating the asteroid field sequence from The Empire Strikes Back, more blue screen work was used, combining various ships like the Millennium Falcon as well as individual asteroids into one shot. Backgrounds were then be created and inserted into the sequence without detection, resulting in one of the film's most thrilling visual effects centerpieces.
Crazy how much time and effort went into these shots back then! Although the result was well worth it.

It allows more detail, cleaner working, reusability and less space and money on the materials... however its not, by any mean, easier... also CGI requires much more work and experience to achieve great results, while its much easier to get experience and achieve good results modeling a fisical object...

Actually special film effects got started in the early 1900's, with short films such as A Trip to the Moon (1912). Much later in the 50's Ray Harryhausen brought his unique style of effects of which many of the SW effects people thank many times over. Star Wars is a culmination of all these SPFX techniques learned from decades past.

well why would you do it so slowly today wheb you can get same results in a fraction of a time. it only needs some thinking and a good blend of visual and practical effects. there is nothing "better" in this old and slow way of making things.

I worked with optical and digital effects during the 80s/90s and I find this still more impressive.

This is so amazing, to be able to do that in the 70's is incredible, I'm sure people who saw the movie back at the time were mesmerized. Maybe that's why Star Wars is Star Wars, it affected millions of people so much that it is living until today.
John Dykstra's work on that motion control rig was nothing short of revolutionary. And to think that Dennis Muren would later go on to be instrumental in initiating ILM's shift to CG. Thrilling times.
And honestly, it looks way more realistic and natural than any computerized attempt nowadays. I loved watching these movies back in the 80ies and I still love watching them today. No remastering, no computer - pure joy!

I'm sorry but Watching the original Star wars after Watching Rogue One and Star wars just looks fake. I mean it looks real enough, especially for it's time, but it wasn't to the point where you couldn't tell what was real or not.
THAT BEING SAID, Models can sill look spectacular when using modern technology and digital compositing. A great example would be Interstellar. Everything felt so real in that movie because there wasn't a single greenscreen and very little CGI. Most shots of the Endurance were done with a model, as well as all the other ships. They even went as far as to project the space background outside of the windows to have it all filmed in-Camera. I think it's quite an achievement.

I mean, ILM did the model effects for many Trek movies, for example, Search for Spock and the effects were amazing, but the same exact models used in Star Trek V filmed by another company (because it was cheaper) was less than spectacular.

ESB's model work is still unmatched to this day. Seriously, if the method would only come back with modern compositing techniques, it would be unstoppable. This movie has the best stop motion I've ever seen too.

Even though we have good cgi today the problem is you can usually tell when something is cgi and these old effects really bring the battles to life

I always knew the Tauntauns were stop motion. In some scenes it was kinda obvious, but the fact that the walkers were blew my mind. I guess since they moved slower it was easier to pull off. Nothing will every touch 4-6. Nothing.
+Harrison DuRant The same thing I learned from doing stop motion animation. The more frames and details you give to the model, the more realistic of the shot you'll get later. And doing stop motion animation kinda consumes a lot of time but worth it.

To fully appreciate the genius-tier innovation generated at Industrial Light and Magic it is helpful to consider that they built the Computer Operated Motion Control Camera System *FROM THE CIRCUIT BOARDS ON UP.* The equipment necessary to complete the fluid motion control shots of Star Wars’ various spacecraft simply didn’t exist in the mid 1970s. The task required the invention of near unprecedented technology.
Amazing details. No wonder Star Wars is one of the pinnacles of science fiction.

This here is one of the most compelling reasons to release the unaltered original trilogy on Blu Ray; not doing so is a slap in the face to such a dedicated, talented group of individuals and their hard work.
I remember seeing this documentary when I was about 11yrs old and being amazed! Inspired, my brother and I even made our own Super8 version of a "space epic".
I still remember that Star Wars felt so real to me. Even if some scene had a minor flaw or something (ex. a faulty light sabre glow, or a funny blue screen space artifact), the visuals were amazing, and the story was so unique at the time.
The best part of the movie was actually imagining what was just outside the shot. It was a fantastic jumping off point for my own young imagination.
These movies are the ones I grew up on and kids today have no idea what they missed out on with these originals and the toys we had that Kenner made!!! These movies were my childhood!!!

I remember being in the theater when they showed the trailer for The Empire Strikes Back. When a quick shot through rebel binoculars of the AT-AT Walkers was shown, most of the audience let out a 'Whoaaaa!! Like everything else in these films, they were extremely unique, new and fun
Disney understands NOTHING about this franchise, it's original appeal, and the fan base (my peer group) who made 'Star Wars' a household name.

Can't imagine doing all this practical effects on low budgets nowadays (time, costs, planning) but this is increadible and Star Wars is definitely a shiny milestone in global cinematography.

What I love most about Star Wars is the diversity amongts the fans themselves. For instance, you have fans who love the prequels, fans who love the original trilogy, fans who love A New Hope the most, fans who love Empire! Fans who love Jedi, fans who love Star Wars because of the music, fans who love the dog fight scenes, the lightsaber duels, and then you have fans like myself who adores the practical effects and THIS! Simple, yet difficult and patient shots of models and stop motion. LOVE it!
60 years later and the creativity of all the different effects still amaze me, absolutely legendary filmmaking

This is incredible and is part of the true legacy of Star Wars, not just the movie itself but the making of it is a wonderful and interesting story. We can only hope that all of the amazing work that the people shown here have done will not be lost. This is a piece of history.

It's sad how Lucasfilm has decided that we should not be able to enjoy the results of such painstaking dedication on a modern format such as BluRay. So much of that hard work was replaced with CG, and often it was lazily replaced. The model makers had designed each of the X-Wings to have a unique appearance, such as the markings on the wings, yet the CG version has them looking all the same. They could have fixed some errors through the use of CG, like inserting the R2 units in the Y-Wings during the scenes where they were neglected to be added, but instead they just wizzed it down their collective pantleg. I think it's great that they got rid of the transparency issue in the Snowspeeder cockpit, removing the matte shadows following the TIE Fighters, and correcting the parallax in the Death Star detention center corridor. That is how CG should be implemented. But what we got was the removal of much of the great practical effects, Greedo shooting at Han, and that terrible song and dance scene in Jedi.

it was impressive for the time it was made and perhaps the Phantom Menace CG effects were somewhat poor but beyond that, i hardly see how physical effects beats CG nowadays ever since Ep2 lol

of course the stuff they use for ships are models which are then engineered through animation programs so they arent exactly CG yet not fully physical
as for what the actors are in, naturally those are also often real models in front of a green/blue screen
you get my point tho, its no longer 100% physical like they used to do it which really does make sense

CGI isn't an easy thing to do. It takes months and months of work. Plus rendering time of each frame of the models.
I wish movies today would still use models for their ships. I think that the way star wars and other movies like 1979 alien did it just had this realistic feel. And they could still use all the modern effects to make the background space scenes look awesome but still use real models for the ships. I really want to see someone make a space movie in that fashion again.

Truly impressive! I was not alive to watch star wars 4 when it came out, but I imagine it was a spectacular movie for visual effects back then. Still stands up perfectly fine today! The glass painting was a technique I never knew about. WOW!
Star Wars made such an impact because it had every thing the greatest movies need. An imaginative script with suspense, drama, action, emotional and moral questioning, also stunning visual effects (thank you investors), mostly great acting. and director / crew who genuinely cared about the creation enough to put real love and patience into the project. CGI advances will be a great resource for VII but We want an AMAZING film. Not "did you see how they used such great CGI that they could go through every avenger like it was one continuous shot."

These classic techniques, awesome they still are, succeeded even older techniques, CGI of today is the next step in that evolution.

***** cgi looks good. but it's not impressive. Models, miniatures, artwork, prosthetics, animatronics, precise camera work, real sets, are actually impressive. The fact you can pretty much just do anything on a computer just means the magic is lost. Special effects is more than just what the thing actually looks like. It's like anything on screen. Good looking actors with no soul and passion will always be worse than relatable and real actors with substance, soul and passion.
***** Oh yeah I agree, CGI can look great, especially in recent years. With Gravity I also forgot I was watching CGI a lot of the time. But at the end of the day, if they had done the effects for real, it would have been more impressive from a visual standpoint. Now obviously in a film like Gravity they couldn't have gone to space and built the shuttles and done the effects for real so they obviously had to do CGI. But my point is that when filmmakers can actually easily do something practically, yet they just choose to do it with CGI, it's a huge shame and the magic is lost.

Ryan Page I'm saying people who craft real physical artwork, which goes to people who then photograph it with specific lighting, lenses, and camera movements, which then results in it looking like the real thing on screen, is more resonant because you can tell it's a real effect. Whether it's a real set, or a real explosion, model, landscape, prosthetic creature, etc etc. It's just more impressive because you realise that it's a real place, person, thing. It wasn't just made up in a computer. If it takes time and effort to produce CG and the artists have passion and fun doing so, then great. Good for them. I'm not ignoring that, but I'm talking about the medium, not the artists.

Stop motion was in existence since the 1920's.
this is when movies were magical, all in camera effects from true craftsman and women............. now everything is pixelated.
All of the hard work put into these special effects and 20 years later he throws in some CGI effects which you could probably on an app today.

Todd Johnson aye, take Spider Man 2 (the good one, the original one) and take a look. only certain parts are actually CGI, the majority of the film was the actual actors on a set, and the background being a green screen. if you look at movies now, it's ALL green screen... i don't think there was a single environment that was "real" in Star Wars episode III. and take Spider Man 3 also, WAY too much CGI. it could have been a lot better.
And i agree with what you said about Practical effects and CGI working in harmony Inception showed this, and so did Interstellar. The Ice planet in Interstellar was actually near volcano in Alberta, and the suits that the characters wore were actual suits created by the props department fitted with radio so the actors could talk to the producers and director, water cooling systems, and oxygen. and i'm pretty certain that the Endurance during the Docking Scene (spoiler alert kinda) was a model that they filmed and had green screens surrounding it.
What a master... Dennis Muren!! He embodied the " magic" in ILM. This is why we need to go BACK and do it like this again. Can we? Purty pleeeeezzz...
i reall appreciate the practical effects and how groundbreaking these effects were but it's faster and less work when using CG but done right CG looks better than practical. but a balance of both should be even better and that's where the force awakens will show. they used some practical effects and are going to enhance them with some CG. looks and sounds great!
And overall it looked very decent!!! Way better than the prequels!!!
Just imagine working for month(s) on a particular miniature or model, with painstaking effort and skill you bring it to life beautifully, and then in a day it must be blown up.
Dang... I should've become a special effects artist.
