Inside ILM: Creating the Razor Crest

- Join us as we journey behind the scenes of the Emmy™ Award-winning visual effects behind the first season of The Mandalorian. We’ll pull back the curtain on one of our favorite bounty hunter’s ship, the infamous Razor Crest and look at the distinctive former military ship from its initial concept design in Doug Chiang’s Lucasfilm art department through to ILM artists building the ship in the digital realm and as a practical miniature for filming. We’ll also look at the parallel development of the custom motion control camera system created by ILM Visual Effects Supervisor, John Knoll to allow for the first motion control shots to film at ILM in 15 years. We hope you enjoy this look ‘Inside ILM’.

It was mostly his brother, but that doesn't make him any less cool.
He and his brother co-created Photoshop
That's nuts, didn't know that. Talk about a great career.
I still can't believe how amazing production values are on TV shows now. A lot of these shows look better than films imo in how they handle CG/practicals.

Damn they shot it on a 5D 😂
And some people complain about not having proper equipment to create a vlog
Nerdhaunt Yeah, people do complain about their equipment like they need the latest stuff for everything.
A 5D would be totally fine for this because they will be taking RAW photos and making a stop motion animation out of them.
You can get better shots on the average phone camera with strong knowledge that the most expensive RED. If any aspiring filmmakers are reading this people don’t ever let what you have on hand limit you! When George got started they didn’t even have a computer controlled camera system yet
And an old NIKKOR lens! Honestly you won't even need a huge rig if you can bear the PITA lol
@@Filtersloth If they have a 5D Mark II or III they actually could shoot RAW Video. But think they're using the Mark IV and because ob it's high Bitrates they could grade the shit out of it to match it with the other cameras.
@@minnemon110 I dont think any of those cameras shoot ‘raw video’ as in 10bit uncompressed videos. They just save as an MP4 right?
Old motions control to the rescue. Amazing how it's now almost forgotten artform of effects work. That silver & chrome model was incredible.
Yes, I can't believe that they actually inlaid the entire thing with what looks like aluminium instead of using chrome paint. Is there a next level after this? Think not.
Inside ILM: Destroying the Razor Crest
F
I thought the empire destroyed it
Imagine their pain when Jon Favreau said they were going to blow the thing up.
I thought the same thing. I don't know if they actually blew up a physical model, or did that all CGI?
All that time, effort and pride in workmanship going in to that model... and then they blew it up?!?! WWWAAAAHHHH haha
@@jedironin380 he was still looking for another razor crest ship, he may yet get another one
A little birdie told me to keep your eyes peeled during The Mandalorian and Grogu movie coming out in 2026 😃
There's sort of this bias that physical effects are always better than digital, but they both have their place. The fact that you can't tell the difference between the miniature and digital shots is telling - and amazing. It shows how far tehcnology has come, and just how ahead of their time ILM has always been. It's cool that so many have been there for so long - it must be a great place to work!
At the same time though, I remember seeing the Mandalorian for the first time with that first flyby and immediately got goosies thinking "OMG, they finally nailed down that classic Star Wars look in CGI!" But no, it was a model all along! I think they did an excellent job blending the two though... Now I'm wondering if you can develop and apply film styles using AI, similar to deepart.io/
Physical effects?
@@BlackEagle352 I think they mean practical in-camera effects
@@BlackEagle352 You know what I mean - the physical model vs. the digital one. I guess it is properly referred to as "practical effects."
@@brianjl7477 I think there's a tangibility to the shots of the ship that wouldn't be there without the model. If it was all CGI from scratch, I don't think it would quite be the same. As excellent as the CGI is.
Someday, the razor crest and grogu puppet they used in this show will be put in a museum.
I knew the Razor Crest was a physical model. But I just couldn't find which shots they were. Amazing stuff happening behind the scenes. I second another commenter....I NEED a model kit!
Go to Hasbro Pulse Raimy. I know it’s not a model, but the toy that just achieved Haslab funding is a little bigger than the scale model they used for shooting! Take a look- it’s great. I think there about 40 days left to order it

@@raimee81 haha I bought one too! I also like modelling - and custom toy conversions. It would be nice to really modify this razor crest with paint and lighting. But I’m kinda hesitant to cut open a more rare and expensive ship $$$ 😬. Good news is it looks like the first unlock from Haslab will be reached in the next day or two... escape pod!
@@sarlaccbreath7701 I imagine taking this and doing the long and slow process of aluminum foil coating. It looks like what they did on the scale model in the show. I could be wrong but it would look excellent. Weathering on top of that.
@@raimee81 you bet. There are also some great metallic paints out now- way better than the old days. Would give a perfect aluminum look, so a quick clear coat, then weather on top of that. Also easier to paint on the yellow stripes and weather those first doing it that way. Thanks for the chat on this! I was bored at work lol. And I think most people will be too scared or lazy to modify this ship. Who knows... maybe the paint in the final version will be quite good.
Lucasfilm I STRONGLY suggest you consider using more practical ships in the future because the Crest looks stunning

Yeah something I kinda missed with the new trilogy, a little less affected stuff looks not necessarily realistic but star wars

So much of that is lost in today's mass produce CGI fill pumping machine. Everything looks the same nowadays, people just do these things because it's their job, and they need a salary, everyone working behind their screen disconnects people from truly working with each other. F for Razor Crest
There's something special hearing The Mandalorian used miniatures for some shots, ILM back using old school techniques. The power of CG is more vast of course, but seeing a physical model feels so satisfying!
Anyone came back here after watching episode 14 "the tragedy"??? Poor Razor Crest
Yup, they had to blew the ship up
I hope Mando finds another Razer Crest. I grew to like that ship
I'm old enough to remember.....this was exactly like losing the Enterprise in Star Trek III. And I don't think the Federation (I mean, New Republic) is gonna build Mando a replacement Razor Crest...
Jon Favreau just keeps bringing the game changers. Can't wait to see what he does next. Favreau paired with the best FX house are going to continue to produce epic results.
I have watched The Mandalorian Season 1 front to back at least a dozen times, and I still can't tell you which shots are CG and which are the practical model. Kudos ILM, for not only rediscovering your roots, but blending it all in such a way that it looks like absolute pure cinema magic. I can't wait to see season 2.

Practical models are always the best , that’s why I build them
Rest In Peace 😞
After watching this video earlier on, seeing episode 6 today, it added to the pain. Had to come back and see some of the new comments here as well. I knew deep down the ship was going to go at some point, given it's already rough time.
I was so sad when it happened. The episode was very good but that really ruined my night. It was such a cool ship and I feel like the viewers bonded with it parallel to Mando. I loved the ship and I really hope he finds a new one or something
Terrible what they did to it, a pretty decent design, that could have really became a favourite. Dont worry though, we have a Naboo starfighter now........
rip RazorCrest :(
What I love about this is how they were able to revisit some of the old techniques and knowledge they had. But execute them with modern technology and methods.
I really enjoyed this video until I saw Kathleen Kennedy's face.
I felt exactly the same way
"why dont ppl like the sequels? the force is REEEmale!" -Victim Princess
"so we went back to making models and more practical effects" -guy who wrote photoshop
In true Star Wars fashion, George really didn't have a budget when it came to practical effects, as he always wanted things to *feel* real. I'm glad Disney took this same approach! To see the time and resources put into this, it's amazing. But like always, ILM doesn't do all this for 2 shots, they build and invent new tools that can be used in the future. They truly are innovative in that sense.
Rest In Peace Razor Crest.
RIP :(
And now it's gone ;(
Naturally - as digital tools become more and more prevalent, the unique look & feel of the real-world models will become even more valuable!
Yes but now that unique look and feel can almost be replicated with CGI. AI will also improve of this.
RIP Razor Crest :'(
“Jon Favreau was adamant that this felt like old school Star Wars”
Please, Disney, do the common sense thing that we all know you’ll eventually do after fumbling around for a bit.
Fire Kathleen Kennedy. And then bring in Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni.
They are both one of the most effective film making teams in Hollywood, if not the world.
Jon is the Big Hollywood Super Producer who knows how to assembly the right cast and crew and then know exactly how to devise and issue a directive for success.
Filoni is the creative who apprenticed under The Founder himself, George Lucas. He is in charge of creating and carefully aligning all the Star Wars characters and stories and creating story arcs that intersect or reference each other.
And then the coup de grace, bring back the Creator, George Lucas, as a “consultant”.
“Consultant” - meaning he is not an employee of Disney or under contract. But he gets to come on set and just “hang out” with Dave and Jon and feels free to offer ideas!
Heck, Favreau will probably let him direct a Mandalorian episode in the future
This is what Star Wars has always been about: creation.
This is why the show is so good and has that old school Star Wars feel 🙌🙌🙌
You'd get that same feeling from a CG Model.

Wow this show. This is the first time I've seen behind the scenes effects that seem special. For the last 20 years every movie would just so people sitting behind a keyboard or actors jumping around in front of a green screen.

ILM you guys are inspirational, amazing work. Wow! This is one of the primary reasons why I love The Mandalorian and Star Wars for pushing that visual envelope to new heights for film. The Mandalorian is a "Passion project", & its evident visually from practical to VFX. ILM salute!
As someone who grew up watching the original Star Wars films, this show does have that feel of the originals. It's gritty, it seems more real, I don't want to use the word simple, but that's almost a word you want to use as it feels like the Mandalorian feels like someone went back to the simple basics to make it. They went back to what made Stars Wars work, the special effects, the writing, etc. I like show more than Episode 8 & 9 combined. Here's hoping this show is on for a long time.
