  • Join us as we journey behind the scenes of the Emmy™ Award-winning visual effects behind the first season of The Mandalorian. We’ll pull back the curtain on one of our favorite bounty hunter’s ship, the infamous Razor Crest and look at the distinctive former military ship from its initial concept design in Doug Chiang’s Lucasfilm art department through to ILM artists building the ship in the digital realm and as a practical miniature for filming. We’ll also look at the parallel development of the custom motion control camera system created by ILM Visual Effects Supervisor, John Knoll to allow for the first motion control shots to film at ILM in 15 years. We hope you enjoy this look ‘Inside ILM’.

“Jon Favreau was adamant that this felt like old school Star Wars”
Please, Disney, do the common sense thing that we all know you’ll eventually do after fumbling around for a bit.
Fire Kathleen Kennedy. And then bring in Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni.
They are both one of the most effective film making teams in Hollywood, if not the world.
Jon is the Big Hollywood Super Producer who knows how to assembly the right cast and crew and then know exactly how to devise and issue a directive for success.
Filoni is the creative who apprenticed under The Founder himself, George Lucas. He is in charge of creating and carefully aligning all the Star Wars characters and stories and creating story arcs that intersect or reference each other.
And then the coup de grace, bring back the Creator, George Lucas, as a “consultant”.
“Consultant” - meaning he is not an employee of Disney or under contract. But he gets to come on set and just “hang out” with Dave and Jon and feels free to offer ideas!
Heck, Favreau will probably let him direct a Mandalorian episode in the future

As someone who grew up watching the original Star Wars films, this show does have that feel of the originals. It's gritty, it seems more real, I don't want to use the word simple, but that's almost a word you want to use as it feels like the Mandalorian feels like someone went back to the simple basics to make it. They went back to what made Stars Wars work, the special effects, the writing, etc. I like show more than Episode 8 & 9 combined. Here's hoping this show is on for a long time.

      1. Leaving her in charge - that is really the crux of the matter with Neanderthals who have deep-seated psychological women issues.
      2. just another franchise full of political stuff - Space should have no politics they disagree with, only the type that they agree with and like. If that is the case, go off and create your own freaking franchise. The age of Trump makes it even more intolerable to deplorables that liberal minds created the very best stuff. Argue with George Lucas who is unashamedly a liberal minded creative. Tell us which conservative non-liberal non-political franchise or studio creative/CEO exists. Clint "talking-to-the-chair " Eastwood? Good luck with that old rascal.

Every Star Wars fan knows all about Doug Chiang, of course, but the guy who's been there just as long and has been just as influential, on both the overall Star Wars aesthetic, going back to the prequels, and on myself, is Ryan Church.
He's now the Lucasfilm Art Department/ILM Concept Supervisor, just under Doug Chiang in the credits following every Star Wars film or television property since Attack of the Clones, and is also responsible for a significant amount of the conceptual artwork inspiring films and television across the medium, from Avatar to Jurassic World, and almost everything even remotely imaginative in existence in-between.
But, don't take MY word for it lol check out his online portfolio and website for yourself, he has everything uploaded there from his early sketches of Kamino and Utapau to Mustafar and the Various vehicles, cities, Starships, and creatures populating the Star Wars Universe that he has created, from his imagination straight to the screen.
    It's absolutely amazing. 👍

My favourite CGI shot of all time was the T-REX in Jurassic Park near the end with the roar and the floating banner. That was the top, then there were the dark ages of CGI, but most of the stuff I'd say as from today is pretty darn amazing! There's just a certain organic feel that you just, no matter how good is difficult to replicate. What I mean is, when we've seen visual effects take a step back and incorporate more practical, the organic flow has been a lot more holistic and less distracting to the story.
