- Fixing a Maytag Centennial washer that fills with water but will not advance past the sensing mode. This video is also applicable to whirlpool/kenmore/amana washing machines that are stuck in sensing. In the video I show how to access the diagnostic mode to easily solve the issue. The model in the video is MVWC415EW1. This video is part of my series "Free on Facebook" a series of videos in which I repair, recycle, and repurpose things I find for free.

The light pattern was a lot easier to see in person than how it looked on camera. This video made it easy. Thanks!!
One of the shifters could be bad and I hate to say this but it's trying to do a cycle right now so I hope I'm not speaking too soon on this but I'm going to try to do a load I think it might be working now thank you so much for your videos without your help I'd be lost I can't say enough on how much you've helped me along the way over the past couple years trouble I'm not sure how long I've been subscribed to your Channel but it feels like a couple years watching your Channel thank you so much duct tape mechanic you deserve to be blessed everyday of your life you and your family.
Great video! My code was F8 E1 (too long to fill error) I checked the water inlet valve and it seems the cold side motor/pump was busted, so I will replace the whole water inlet assembly. Luckily I can still run it on Hot only till the replacement piece arrives. Videos like this are amazing. saved me $500+ trying to buy a new or used washer.
Awesome! Good work!
I found the problem and it was due to too much soap suds I looked in the manual and it said that too much soap suds can cause it not to spend but I did mess up one of my brand new shifters but that's okay cuz it seems to be working okay now it did a final spin after I did a rinse and spin and I did a final spin that worked out pretty good I hope it'll do another load but thank you again duct tape mechanic couldn't live without you bro God bless you and your family. I just hope as usual I'm not saying things through soon I'm trying another load to see how it goes.
Dude thank you so much. My kids arent easy on appliances, and this newer stuff still blows my mind. Actuator codes, flipped her over and found the position sensor with a dead spot in it. Man I miss float switches and timers!
Glad to help! Trust me I got a little one myself! Can't go long without a washer
@DuctTapeMechanic where can I order this piece my just went out can't get it past sensing
If they would stop making them out of that cheap molded plastic it wouldn’t be much of a problem I mean how much more can a metal one cost to make it’s simply lazy manufacturing BS
I did diagnostic mode and when it gets to rinse it just stays there, it won’t start.
Thanks so much, man. Ma didn't even know her washer wasn't working properly. I wondered why when set to deep water, it stayed on sensing and didn't put "deep water" in.
Diagnostic mode seems like cool insider info.
Great vid, many thumbs up to you, sir!
Glad I could help!
This is my LAST MAYTAG😡😡😡😡
@HobbyQuilter yeah, I don't need a machine to "sense" water level. What was wrong with high, medium, and low?
Just installed actuator, not agitator, in free CL washer. Thank you SO MUCH for your no nonsense videos! Watching another one since it's been self cleaning for over 2 hours!! Doesn't sound like grinding noise in video 7mo ago but BOY, it's making a racket. I haul my own water and live off the E grid so Not too keen on it using all that power, water..🧐 Doesn't sound like it spins in complete circle, if that makes sense..
Great work! Appreciate the kind words!
Gosh, good for you for refurbishing these things that are "broken"! Everyone is so quick to throw everything at the curb these days! I luv duct tape, wire and twine...lol! I luv MacGyver-ing broken things...it's like a puzzle, or a challenge!
First, thank you for putting your time and effort into these videos; you are doing all of us RUclips mechanics a great service man!
So my Centennial was getting stuck in sensing mode, and even when I held down the start/reset button to clear it, it was still trying to run what I believe was the sensing function, yet no lights were on at all. After unplugging it, waiting, and then attempting to put it into the diagnostic mode, it isn't flashing all the lights like its supposed to, just the sensing light blinks. The service manual does have a code for that (no fault), but I'm almost 100% positive that it's only valid AFTER you have put it in diagnostic mode, which I've tried to do multiple times with no success. Could you please tell me if you've encountered this issue, and what steps I can take to resolve it? Thanks again in advance!
Same washer. Mine just flashes sending light. Unplugged it for half hour. Same. When through the dial reset turns. Same. Nothing working. Previous load worked fine. I don't get it. Seems many people are having this same problem. And of course it's the weekend when I do the laundry and their customer service isn't open weekends. Grrrrr. Whatever happened to service? This sucks.
This was very helpful
I'm sorry to bother you but thank you so much you've been a lifesaver I'm still dedicated fan.
Your videos are awesome. I’m getting an F9 (but the washer is draining) and then with the “backing out” of diagnostic mode, I’m just getting the sensing light comes on until the diagnostic mode ends….Not sure what that is
THANKS for the video. I did like you showed and it worked. What if the E code shows 'Rinse' & 'Spin" light. What would that mean?
Awesome work
Thanks!
Hi, thank you for your expertise. It might help also to add for newbies who have never owned their own washer and dryer before that you definitely have to turn the water flow back on after connecting. 🤣
I bet you aren't the first to do that nor the last! Good job on the repair!
Yes I did calibrate it after I changed the shift actuator
I sure thank you for the work an videos ya are a life saver yes people are crazy to go get another washer ..i love to have some older ones are the easiest an highest now to work on thanks I will try this an see but can you try to do more about error codes thank u God bless you and your family.
I will keep that in mind. Thank you for watching and the kind comment!
Just got this washer after having my other washer for 35 years. New washers like this are crap and won’t last as long
I have a MayTag Bravos washer and the error code is flashing sensing and wash then done. Any advice what I should do next?
Where do you find how to interpret the blinking lights into error codes? My washers auto sensing light and wash light will blink once simultaneously and then the done light will blink, but I don’t know where to find what error that is.
Can u tell me how to install two new timer one for washing and one for spin in this machine . please
Okay I'll try this and my sensing light is the only one flashing no other lights is flashing so now I have to ask what does that mean and if you can help please do thank you so much.?
What does rinse and spin on the second blink mean?
Do you have the error codes list for this washer? I can’t find it online.
I changed the shifter and it’s still saying the same error. Could it be bad sensor or is there something else wrong?
What if it is stuck in wash mode? Mine won’t move past the wash light. I don’t think it’s even washing, even though the light is on.
Did you figure out the problem to this??
I did all that then I changed out my shift actuator and the sensing light is still blinking n won’t shut off it’s filling up with water draining but not agitating in wash cycle n the lid lock isn’t on and it won’t spin please help I bought the part to change the lid lock switch I didn’t know what else to try
What if it reads sense, rinse, and done on the first blink and spin on the second ?
Looking for your expert advice. I have that exact washer and the rinse light is flashing. Won't switch to any other mode . Thank you in advance my man.
Likewise I can't get mine into the diagnostic mode?!!
Thanks!
Your welcome!
What is the name of the shifter for this madel on Amazon?
Took a look at the washer today because of UL code. Found rotor cover center bolt loose. I tried to remove bolt, but it wouldn't come all the way off. Instead of trying to muscle it off, I decided to simply tighten bolt down and check for proper operation. The UL code did not come up. Prior to tightening bolt, it was in a hard failure. Hopefully, that was it and it will continue to operate without further issues.
Great work
I ran the diagnostic test and I cannot find a way to understand the code. It is flashing sensing, wash, done at one time and then done next flash. It goes back and forth between these. Does anyone know what that means?
What if the second blinking lights is rinse and spin. What code is that
I tried to reset and put into diagnostic mode. Unplugged for 10 minutes and cant enter diagnostic mode as the sensing light starts blinking again. Any tips to try ?
First...thank you. On my Maytag washer mvwc565fw0, it would not spin clothes all the way dry and the sensing light was staying on. I first replaced drive belt, horrible noise started. So, with your expert help, I replaced the (s)clutch. Fixed the noise, however sensing light still remained on. I did the diagnostic like you showed, so I order and replaced actuary. Sensing light still on. What is my next move??? Control panel issue? Transmission?
Please help.
I'd hate to buy a new washer, since I might be just a step away from fixing the issue. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO TRY NEXT OR LET ME KNOW IF I SHOULD GIVE UP. Thank you so much. You are the best
I recommend trying a recalibration on the washer (there are a few videos out there about that). If it also not duing the cold water rinse before the spin cycle then your valves need to be replaced (see my first video about the stuck in sensing issue). Best of luck!
Thank you so much. Your videos are easy to follow. You’re a great teacher!
Hello, when accessing the bottom of the washer, does it matter whch side you lay it on? You laid this one on it's back, but on my washer if I did that, the water connections and water drain protrude out the back. Can I lay it on the front or either side and I be okay? TIA and thank you for great video's.
Sometimes, I put a block of wood down and then lay it on its back. Either way, you should be ok as long as you don't leave it like that for a long time (ie over night) as it is meant to be kept vertical
Duct Tape Mechanic - My washer is stuck into Sensing Fill mode. I currently has water inside it. I think my wife used it and took off to the laundry mat to finish the load, So I tried to put into diagnostic mode several times and it does not go into it. So what is next? I see people get rid of washing machines all the time, but like most situation, the fix is not too far away. Any advice on this would be appreciated since I do not have the money to purchase a new washer. I can usually figure out what is wrong with something and be able to fix it. Thanks for the video.
If it fills with water and is still stuck in sensing my guess would be the shifter js bad. It js only like $25 on Amazon so definitely worth a shot
Were is the link for the water valve
I changed shift actuator and lid lock, still wont come on. Started out with full of water and would not drain or spin.
After attempting to go onto diagmostic settings only my sensing light continues to blink. Can anyone help?
Mines I hit start then as it goes into sensing it makes a loud noise and then it acts like sensing then it stop and keep blinking sensing.
Question? I have replaced everything on my Maytag centennial but the board and motor I put it in diagnostics mode and it recalibrates and goes thru everything like it should, put it on a regular cycle and it will not spin. The actuator is brand new? I would love to read yur thoughts on this. Remember it does spin in diagnostic?
Stanger indeed. I would assume it's the board and not the motor...
@@DuctTapeMechanic yes sir! What do you think about direct drive versus motor belt driven I think the motor belt setup is engineered for doom, I'm about ready to go back to dog ears, and clutches at least when you replace the part they worked, it timers could be clean and fixed and run 🏃 like when got it. Thanks for yur response you were the only one to share good knowledge so I definitely will use it.
@@JasonSmith-qx3zh Direct drive washing machines are awesome. Even 25+ year old machines are still going strong! Iv dealt with nearly new belt driven VMW machines that have bad bearings or transmissions after a year or two.
DTM, I trace wires like the tech book said from the shifter to the board after I check the board I got the value that I suppose to I don't see how though, technically I'm showing a good board and shifter. I did a reset, and followed that with a calibration everything went well like it should. Wash a load and it did a complete cycle I started another load
And I got the blinking lock light from the dark side of washing machine land lol. It's just baffling to me, I can do the tech steps to get the right values. Continuity on the wires from the board to the shifter, but still the Maytag fails it's got to be that board it's just not showing what's out like bulge capacitor or burn spots I've ordered everything else why not get a board thanks for all your help❗👍
Would this also cause it to "sense" for about 20 seconds and then it'll stop sensing and unlock the door?
Yes it could cause that symptom
Well that is good info, mine came up with err code F8 e1 code which is low flow which I already new lol, will not fill at all now just spins around in sensing mode. The inlet filter was very dirty and cleaned it but still not working, when I did individual modes like spin cycle seems to be ok even tested the lid lock think it is ok any others suggestions?
Sounds like an issue with either your water supply (hose kinked/clogged or valves partially closed) or perhaps bad valves at the washer.
@@DuctTapeMechanic ok thanks maybe valve water flows through the hose like a champ into a bucket but just won’t fill the washer . What is the piece behind the filter looks like a restrictor, cleansed both of them do they go back together in a certain position? Thank you for your time
@@eroggero hi! I'm on the site for another washer problem but I had one last year with the same as yours and found that the cold inlet valve was not opening all the way. I cleaned it out as best I could but after I replaced the inlet valve the water flowed into the washer SO much faster. Hope it helps!
@@michelleoverby thanks for the response, I did end up testing The resistance on the coils, they looked a little crack. Bottom line I bought a new inlet valve assembly replaced it and so far so good. Thanks again
Sensing rinse done- done?
Are you converting the transmission to a Whirlpool? Show me how to do it.
What if my washer is blinking yellow on all things except done
How do I get to the series free on Facebook?
I subscribed earlier. I hit subscribe anyway. Hope it worked.
You don't mention recalibrating the machine once a part is changed out...Is this something that also must happen ?? Mine seems to be stuck in the rinse phase...would actuator also be culprit?
Actuator could be the culprit. Best thing to do is put it into diagnostic mode and read the codes, however if you wanted to take a blind attempt at it, replacing he actuator is not a bad choice. Calibrating the machine is recommended after changing a major part, as it will ensure your machine operates efficiency. Calibrating the machine won't fix any sort of mechanical issues, and I have gotten away without doing it after a repair (I have started doing it after major repair more recently as it best recommended practice)
I put another shifter arm that switches the clutch back and forth on putting Diagnostics mode and the first three lights blink exactly like you say but the second blank just shows spin light?
Interesting. I am following step by step with same machine.
However I had replaced the shift actuater previously..machine was not spinning out. Seemed to operate fine for a while. Then it seemed to be confused. Not going in and out of functions consistently. And sensors lights would indicate what function it was in. So mostly it would limp through the wash cycles
And clicking and other noises. Nothing Crazy loud. But it would get through to the end and fill with water again. I'd just pay attention and catch it when it was drying and shut the water off. So now I'm looking to trouble shoot the controle board? I will let ya know. Thank you for the information.
@@gordonwalton8209 it seemed to be Suds and all that but at the end of the day ended up being the gear case and now I'm having to replace that and that's expensive the cheapest one is 200 and something dollars on Amazon be sure and let me know how things work out for you and if it wasn't for the duck tape mechanic I wouldn't have known where to begin but I had replaced a couple parts on the washer and at first it was spinning and not agitating then it went to agitating and not spending so it ended up being the Gear case at the end of the day.
I have the same washer but a different year, it's also stuck in sensing and the same lights are on. Before it completely stopped working the it leaking water from the bottom, could a faulty shift actuator cause the leak as well or is that another issue?
It's probably a leaky hose or tub seal. Bad shifter actuator won't cause a leak
@DuctTapeMechanic thanks bro! Now time to find a video on how to replace the tub seal 🤣
Mine is flashing sensing and wash and then done what is that code
10 year limited warranty, do they honor that warranty or is it still a hassle to honor?
I have the same machine. No they don't stand behind the 10 year warranty. It only covers the drive motor and wash basket. Nothing else.
Oh my goodness
I have F7 E6 saying bad motor but it does drain and spin out. Do you think its the motor?
Check to see if the inner drum is spinning freely, I have seen the motor error when there is something restricting the movement of the inner tub. I would check that first!
What if i got a differnt set of lights... I cant figure out what my code means.
Same
What if only the sensing light comes on after you go through all that?
That's all I'm getting too....
I have sensing wash and done flashing
I have the exact make and model. I took it apart and cleaned the filter, and it was working, and then a clean machine test and now it just goes to sensing, fills, and shuts off and won't turn back on. What can I do?
Same thing with mine.
Did you ever find out what was wrong with it? If so can you let me know please?
Sensing fill and wash, then done light flashing. No idea what that code is
With a newer model showing sense mold would it be the same problem
Hard to say without looking at it but most of the newer models work the same way as the older ones
I have a MWWX655DW1 and it blinks sensing+wash and then done on that last code. I know that my inlet valves are bad and making noise. I ordered new ones from Amazon.
Wanted to say that on my Maytag bravos you need to do this sequence to put on diag mode. Set your normal. 1 CCW, 3 CW, 1 CCW, 1 CW
Sensing ,wash, and done means a valve change?
I had a repair guy come and install the parts I ordered and everything is working now. My conclusion was correct. What happens is that it takes too long to fill up the drum with water so the machine basically stop and empties the drum.
I have the same issue you did, so it’s best to change the valves? Tried calling Maytag and their customer service is absolutely garbage
I put a new on ...worked perfect after one day back to the same problem
Strange. Did you also replace the clutch assembly? Sometimes it gets stuck. Sometimes cleaning and grading jt can help as well
How about
first blink sensing ,wash
Second blink just done???
That's what I have and I'm trying to figure it out
Our washer keeps getting stuck in diagnostics. It will keep shake violently and not stop. After 5 minutes we have to unplug the washing machine . Any ideas? Thanks
We can't get into the error codes because we get stuck diagnostics.
One thing i found that nobody has talked about, the pump will run and propellor will turn but it dont have power to pump water out the way i found out i lowered the hose about half way and it would pump water out
I have the exact same washer my saying it's going threw all the cycles but it's actually not doing anything
Try replacing the shifter
What to do of clothes still wet after spin?
Thx
Have you made sure the drain pump is working?
how did you drain it?
Harbor freight has a nice little battery-powered pump that can get most of the water out. Of course, you can also manually get the water out as well (have plenty of towels on hand!)
is it common for this to happen 24 hours after buying a new washer?
No. Take that thing back
My sensor light blanks and also the Lid unlock light blinks
In diagnostic mode or regularly?
I have whirlpool out of the box stuck in sense mode
Probably should take that back
OMG! I have one and I effin hate it! I literally just got it, and it just fills up with water and drains it, but it never spins ugh I hate it!
Same here.
I switched that it’s working but not filling up it’s just working weird I need to clear it
Run a calibration
@@DuctTapeMechanic thanksI just did it’s working great now
My lights don’t come on
Wife says she unplugs it tries to get it out if of sensing and after 5 or more times it starts to work
The only other thing that maybe happening is she is washing 2 pieces of clothing and to lite for sensing mode to make a decision ?
Mine says F2E1
I keep trying to make the stupid sensing light stop blinking so I can enter calibration and diagnostics but it won't stop! Grrrrrrrrrrrrr
What if lights are not lit up
No lights at all? Most likely indicates a control board failure. Try unplugging it for a few minutes then plug it back in. If not you will have to troubleshoot the control board/ replace it. I have a video on what to do if washer is not powering on.
Mine won't go into diagnostic mode but I'm gonna take the $26 gamble.
Worth the shot
Comment back if it works for you please
Mine neither would go into sensing mode so works in deep water wash what a pos this is our 2nd washer in 5 years. What is the $26 dollar part ?
@@MrMechanicandy the mode shifter
Mine was doing the same thing it blew out a triac on the control board
Stuck on lid lock
Does the lid actually lock? Try lifting it. If it doesn't the mechanism needs to be changed
It don't matter how much $ our kids are taught to take. If you can't do at least somethings yourself. What can you keep?
Mine is 2 MONTHS OLD@🤨
Wow that is horrible!
WE SHOULDNT SUFFER WITH ALL THIS BULLSHIT .
I agree. This is BS. Their customer service just wants to charge you for a service tech to come out. They don't even trouble shoot over the phone. BS money hungry bass terds. Worshipping the almighty dollar before being kind to the human giving it to them.
My sensing does not allow the water to load to its capacity even if I leave it on deep wash also won't fill, I checked the water lines and cleaned the filters and still not filling up. What can I try?? Thanks
