The art and restorations looks top notch. And another observation... Modern age spines: Normal. Silver age spines: Tiny. Golden age spines: Normal. Hmm... 🤔
Look. Let’s just be real. The material is racist because it comes from a time when racism was far more socially acceptable and due in part to the war effort. However in terms of being a comic historian and a historian in general I think it is important to folks to actually see these comics uncensored and unfiltered. They are an important part of comics history and you cannot expect folks to be able to understand and deal with present day racism if you don’t actually look at past racism as it existed
Great job on handling material that hasn't aged well. I appreciate your ability to explain the context in a respectful and decent way. "Red Skull's Deadly Revenge" is great; kinda effed up, but great!
Definitely will be getting this, love those GA books. Yes, very dated but they had an energy and rawness that perhaps has been lost now, Some of the stories are pretty dire looking such as Headline hunter but the Cap ones look amazing. I hope they continue to bring them out. Got volume 1 already.
Wonderful review as ever Uncanny Omar! Really makes me ache for an Invaders Omnibus, an All-Star Comics Omnibus, and finally, an original Captain Marvel Omnibus (the Fawcett Comics Capt Marvel first appearances)
Yes, I plan on getting all the Marvel Timely and Marvel Golden Age Omnibuses, including this one. Direct Market, or Original Art on covers editions. I'm also one of those who hopes DC ends up releasing the original Captain Marvel (Shazam!) Monster Society of Evil run. A massively important, groundbreaking, influential run in comic book history
I agree with you that these stories deserved to be seen unedited. I also admire art and reading stories as originally written. I don't agree that its not racist just because it is a product of its time and other media was depicting the war and our enemy the same way. Like you say wartime propaganda depicting Japanese people as ruthless and animalistic had its purpose; to dehumanize them and instill fear in the American people. We're all adults, we get it, we know how this works. This is a part of our history, its important in that respect but it is racist. Thanks for the overview on a tough subject.
Great content. Not sure tv was around back then but my dad always told me of pathe news in movie cinemas and the importance of radio. Excelsior as always
marvel should be up to the top of their game and those gutter loss are unacceptable specially with a book of this kind of historic importance for USA comic history ...
In regard to Masterworks vs. Omnibus in the Masterworks the gutter loss is not nearly as bad on the “Attention Americans” spread you can see both faces pretty clearly. As for the first example (Mikado’s Super Shell) there is gutter loss but not as bad as here, you can see more of Captain America’s face. (Still not perfect though) P.S. color restoration looks about the same on those spreads. (Quite a few older Masterworks had incorrect color restoration but these look very close)
I'm not really sure if I want this. I have the first volume, but the stories don't really intrigue me very much. You could do a pretty solid Cap reading order by just starting with Avengers #4. I don't even know if I'll keep the first volume.
I really want to get some of the golden age omnis cause my grandad and my dad had the original issues and I would always read the, ahem I was like 3 or something 😂
I hate how people have to do all kinds of mental gymnastics just to read comics from the golden age or read anything from the 20th century for that matter or when they denigrate and undermine it smh.
While I like the look of the reprint to GA Volume 1 better, I can't replace my original copy as I have a sketch from the recently deceased Alan Bellman drawn in it. There is no way in hell I am ever replacing it.
Thanks for providing the context for Marvel's decision to continue printing these racist caricatures and depictions. I really appreciated Gene Luen Yang's Superman Smashes the Klan too that really got into and deconstructed the Yellow Peril time period.
@@legofigurereviews9797 Well, they also working for DC comics, in secret, because Martin Goodman (Marvel's owner) wasn't paying the royalties Joe and Jack deserved for creating Captain America. Cap was a huge star and had a lot of different royalties coming into the company.
The art is beautiful, gorgeous restoration too. Glad that they kept the spine as it should, without having to ruin the spines like in FF. However, Marvel has to be firm with these printers (like RR Donnelly or Imak) to work more in keeping the old standards in binding and paper quality, both have gotten worse.
That standard edition cover is 🔥. One of the rare exceptions where I prefer the standard over the DM
And thank you Omar, may you and your channel last a long time full of prosperity.

Ahhh some nice uniform spine designs with font I can actually read without a magnifying glass. Perfection 👌🏻🔥

Also . . . the Secret Stamp needs a hardcore reboot!
@@kevinwoodside9461 Aged well is only by perspective. Really liked the spine and thick paper.🤗They really took good care making this.🤗
Very good, Omar. I liked reading "The Invaders" when I was a kid. Captain America, Human Torch, Sub Mariner...etc.
The omnibus is coming early next year :)

A Fawcett omni would be superb, likewise an All-Star omni set would be just perfect (Seven Soldiers would also be pretty good)
I’ve been waiting for this. I wish golden age sold better so we could get more of them.
Sadly you are right. Not a lot of sales of Golden age books. So we are lucky to get the comics from that era from time to time.
Agreed. Golden Age Flash and Aquaman omnibus would be EPIC
A literary time-capsule! I LOVE IT!!!!
Yessir Matching spine with my Vol 1 😌
This was a very interesting and informative review! Awesome as always!
Everybody: “well, at least they didn’t mess up THIS spine.”
Omar: “my spine is a little misaligned”
Everybody: ...
I really like the spine on these Golden age omnis.
Very informed and balanced review, thank you.
Definitely not for me, but thanks for the excellent overview OMar!!!
Love the original Cap! Waiting for my preordered copy! Thanks Omar!
Red Skull was effin terrifying in these

Golden age is so underappreciated smh.
@@anthonygarcia8749 Just got Volume 1 the other day,and it’s great, nice and thick. Waiting for Volume 2 to come in can’t wait!🤗

No one ever points out the Germans were also portrayed as ruthless cavemen like animals either though.
I enjoyed the first volume. I think I prefer the Standard edition cover but the DM fits the material better. I might pick up both.
Wonder why they kept these spine designs normal.
It's kind of weird.

The gutter lose is less prevalent in the Masterworks.
damn, after seeing the interiors I really want both volumes, but the gutter loss issue is probably a deal breaker

So what about white Germans being depicted as snarling monsters, was that racist?

Oh man keep that book! I have so many signatures on my Uncanny 1 omnibus from people no longer with us, that book will stay with me!
Lucky. The only signature I have on my X-Men omnis right now is Bob McCleod.
I did get one of my Silver Age Flash books signed by Joe Giella though.
Is there enough material for vol. 3?
Lovely overview.

Does this book have Jack Kirby involved in it
No, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby had already been fired for secretly working for DC comics.

Aquaman reading order
Yeah good idea
Jack Kirby and Joe Simon in all its glory before been both drafted to WW2 😎
Jack and Joe were already gone from the feature at this time.
Great overview Omar. The book is a bit outdated for my taste.

That spine font is way too big, I refuse to buy any marvel book with a spine that looks normal!
These books are historical showing were the company came from what artist writes did… But that gutter loss turned me off.
