That sentiment was also shared by some of the new blood who’d been inspired by the King's work but were now 1) jealous he was granted creative freedoms they didn’t have, and 2) resentful of the fact he wouldn't listen to their advice or let them write his books. Hence, a trolling campaign that included not just the selective printing of negative letters (some of which, it’s rumored, were written by staff) but derogatory notes and remarks and gossip circulated around the Marvel Bullpen, all meant to shame the dude who’d built their company into doing and seeing things their way. Thanks for the vid, Omar! I also didn't appreciate Kirby until I got older and now I see his work can be breathtaking. The greatness in Kirby can also be measure in the fact that he created Celestials, Eternals, Fourth World and Darkseid (and so much more) - All currently being made into major motion pictures for this generation! Long Live The KING!!!
Same. I was a kid in the 70s just starting out (and at that time hadn’t read his earlier work) and I remember I hated the Kirby look - all that weird machinery - and bought the cap books but they were not my favorites. Only many years later after having read the silver age did I learn to marvel at Kirby. And recently going back to these cap issues and rereading them I was blown away by the art - they are amazing.
What blows my mind is, Jack Kirby was drawing Captain America in the Golden, the Silver *and* the Bronze Age. Is there any other instance of a creator working on a character through all those periods in comic book history?? Maybe Bill Everett? Anyway, I'm bound to get this omni. I think Kirby's Silver Age Cap comics are underappreciated and I want to see what he was doing with Cap in the mid-70s. Having read (and liked!) the 4th World, I'd say 70s Kirby is an acquired taste. His work was visually and narratively dated at that time, but he still had tons of creative energy and gave a lot of valuable concepts and characters to the big 2.
Great video, Omar. Lost this book in a flood. Really happy to be able to buy it again. Untold Tales of Spider-Man and Man-Thing Omnibus are two more upcoming reprints I'm so happy about!
I've mostly been getting Cap in the Epic format, but, man, I sure am tempted to get this! It's so great to see all that amazing Kirby artwork! I don't think anyone drew Cap as good as Kirby did!
Wow..so awesome.Cant wait to get this in my hands .Captain America and Jack Kirby mean alot to this old Marvel fan.I love both covers, but leaning towards the DM.Great video,Omar.
(Sorry... I’m so stoked for this book... so here is a third comment) I’ve heard about people referring to him as “Hack Kirby” during the latter 70s and early 80s. Saying he was washed up. It’s sad really. Those people would then learn to appreciate his work much too late.
I have the original issues, but I still can't wait to add this to my collection. Sadly, I was there in the 70's buying these off the stands, and the lettercol's are a fair representation of what was going on at the time. You could trade Avengers comics with your friends. You could trade Superman, Spider-Man or Batman. But if you bought a Fourth World book, or this run of Cap, you were stuck with it. The sad truth is, no one wanted 70's Kirby. He hadn't achieved the legendary status he has today amongst comics fans. It was great for me at the time, because I liked Kirby, and it meant I could assemble complete runs of Kamandi, The Demon and the Fourth World series cheaply. I could trade one Iron Man or Daredevil for two or three Kirby books. But it breaks my heart to think back on it now. Long Live the King!
Just ordered it AGAIN! Yes, I have the original release of this omnibus. However there are lots of changes since that release. 1. Introductions 2. New scans 3. New supplemental material and finally 3. LETTER PAGES!!!. It is a rarity for Marvel to make any changes to an original omnibus but of course they did on this one. I am an avid Kirby collector and MUST have this book!
Glad this omni is being reprinted. I had wanted to read Kirby's 70's double duty Cap run since I read about within the pages of the Marvel Age issue celebrating 50 years of Captain America. Love that the original letter pages are included as well. A must buy for me.
@Ryan Wilson I’m from the Scotland so forbidden planet is where I get my omnis, I always assumed placed like TOW and Amazon.com would have them up before anything in the Uk as I know Canada usually gets all their books early.
I have the original omni (with leather feel and silver letters on the cover), do I see differences in the order of the stories? Annual 3 and Bicentennial were at the beginning, then came the monthly issues, and last was annual 4. Long live the King!
This is a great episode. Please do the same with the other Cap omnis coming out. I really dig these comics. I like it because there are fewer panels per page and each panel gives that classic Kirby detail. I, like you, didn't really get to appreciate his art at first but now I love it. Most people prefer his Silver Age stuff but I love the Bronze age. Mostly because of this and the fourth world comics he made for the distinguished competition
Omar Jack despite the ups and downs and things like these letter pages was also much loved I remember Mark Evanier said at a san diego comic con Jack Kirby Panel I attended like somewhere between 2015-2017 time frame that Jack always got Standing Ovations at Comic Con when he appeared back in the day!!! I grew up in the early 60s Jack was awesome his art really had powerful impact so much so that whenever I think of those characters that he introduced I always see the Kirby renditions in my mind;s eye and memory they were Iconic
Love that issue, particularly the Barry Smith pages. Such an unusual pairing, and I'm sure Smith, who started out as a straight-up Kirby clone, must've been like "pinch me" the whole time. I read he was meant to ink the whole book but, given how notoriously slow he was, that didn't happen. Fine with me, because the Trimpe and Romita pages rock!
I can’t wait for the reprint of the treasury edition of the Bicentennial Battles too! I’m buying this omnibus and that edition. I’ve been trying to hunt down the original treasury edition for a decent price for years!
I use to have it but lost it in a fire in the early 80s. I could have picked it up a few years ago at a flea market but the seller wanted too much for it for the condition it was in.
I am looking forward to this Omnibus, especially for Arnim Zola's premier. As for the letter pages, I love reading those for the silver age and bronze age books since it is the only way to get a first hand understanding of how audiences viewed these stories back then. The biggest shocker for me was in one of the Spider-Man books a US soldier wrote to them to talk about how much his squad loved the run and then a few issues later there was a letter from that soldier's partner who said he was killed in action just before his letter was published.
I just purchased the recent Masterworks collecting the same issues in this omnibus, and it is one of those times I'm kinda glad they don't run the letter pages in the Masterworks.
@@NearMintConditionFWIW, I did end up with the DM variant, only to find out later that it was a true Kirby cover. The Standard Market variant uses a cover that was touched up, re-drawn a bit by someone else.

Q. There is a Cap vol 3 Omni also coming out this year that if I'm not mistaking ends in issue 192. This one starts in 193, which follows that one, now If they decide to make an Omni after this one is that considered vol 4, or is that going to be a Sal Buscema eccentric Omni? 🤔🤔
Very cool time capsule they created by adding the letters pages! Sadly it seems as if the first printing is not the restored art (according to my letter pages-less copy).

I have the original omnibus. It is true it has the same restoration as the TPBs even though the colors in mine are quite vivid, probably due to how they look on glossy paper versus the standard paper from trades. One thing I was noticing is the page count. Your page numbers in the omni are higher than mine, I guess for the letter pages (missing in first edition). Still personally I think the quality of the original omni is good enough to not justify an upgrade.
Have you ever done a review of the Stan Lee Captain America omnibus? It seems to be the only Cap omnibus I haven’t seen an Individual review on. It’s out of print I believe, but luckily I bought it before it went OOP. I would love to see you review it one day, for sure.
I have the first print but you just sold me another Omnibus Omar...:-0 I really like to know of improvements with Omni please do it for all of them as they are reissued.
i'm going with th standard edition cover. i like this run but it doesnt even look or feel like anywhere in the rest of the 616. if you like bicentennial battles try the captain america corp. its written by uncle rog , roger stern. i can't wait to start getting all these omnis coming out this year. january 26th seems to be crawling to get here.
I read these stories in real time in the seventies. I remember being confused, not that letter writers could be critical, but that the criticism was published. Letter pages were always so positive and rah-rah-rah about the comics. It’s a shame the marvel staff took it upon themselves to decide what was “quality” and what was not.
Hey Omar. Thanks for this. I ordinarily may not have been interested in this one but you have piqued my interest, especially as I think the announced CA Omnibus Vol. 3 goes close if not actually linking up with this one (unless I'm mistaken, trying to remember your video about it). So I might go for this. Liked what I saw and I have the "Mad Bomb" story Line in a HC so I might revisit that one. Love your work as always mate. Cheers to everyone there 😊😊
I own the original omnibus and was shocked there were no intros or letter pages like other omnibus from Marvel. Was this considered inferior Kirby by the omnibus editor as well as fans at the time this was originally sold on the stands? The only extras were the original pencil pages. The colors were much darker. Don’t think this was used for the paperback since the one caption pointed out was not the same as the paperback. New edition looks brighter so shows more detail. The first annual and treasury stories are in their true sequence and not in the beginning as it is in the first omnibus. Will definitely upgrade. So many new extras. I bought every issue originally and was in seventh heaven that Kirby was back at Marvel and doing the one character I wanted him to return to. His Captain America was always my favorite.
You know, it's kind of refreshing to know Kirby wasn't above criticism (fair or not) back then. Frank Miller has been roasted as well for his Dark knight sequels and AS-Batman. I guess this second stint makes a good argument for Thomas Wolfe's saying: "You can't go back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time". Having said that, I was sort of on the fence about this book but I think I'll be getting it.
So I’ve always wanted to read the classic marvel comics and backstories but I never know where to start. Are these omnibus books the way to go or is it like jumping in mid-story?
They are not like jumping in mid story. The full page spreads are many in this collection so it’s not a bad starting place. However I’m a Kirby fan and think you can’t go wrong with any Kirby Omni.
2:52 Henry Kissenger's Marvel Debut. He sure looks like him on page 24. See, I'm old. Look up a younger Henry Kissenger. That guy is a dead ringer. Kissenger was huge in the 70's or maybe it was later. I think the guy is still alive and in his 90's.
I just checked and the Wikipedia photo is almost identical. Is it just a coincidence that that character is a dead ringer for old Henry who is alive and kicking at the age of 98?
While this is not for me, I kinda love the fact that it exists :-) Art is pretty tight and that pg. 31 has instant Fourth-World-design vibes (those head-thingies!). But yeah, not exactly my favourite era of comics or my favourite character. Not sure, if it is my being a European, but Cap was always a tough character to really grasp and love.
Thanks for the info. I’ll definitely pick that up. I’m reading Coates’s Black Panther right now and I am loving it. He is such an amazing writer. It would be great to see him get a long run with Cap so he can really sink his teeth into the characters and all the perspective he can derive from them.
Now I'm conflicted. Ignorance would've been bliss. My original purchase from 2011 does not have the letter pages. Any other differences between this re-issue and the original from 2011? What's the page count on this bad boy? I also thought the letter pages for the Eternals Omnibus had a slight negative vibe too.
Kirby is amazing but it took me a while to appreciate him too. Also, as I understand it, "The Bicentennial Battles" was produced specifically to celebrate America's Bicentennial.
By giving the different sizes of Mad Bombs the cutesy names of Peanut, Dumpling, and Big Daddy, I think Kirby was alluding to the real-life nuclear bombs Little Boy (dropped by the US on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945) and Fat Man (dropped by the US on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945). It's creepy that such tremendously destructive real-life weapons had these cute, playful names.
Never read the 70s cap stuff from Jack before aside from the swine portion and forward. But this is dope. Long live the King 🔥🔥🔥🔥 dude I want this book so bad now 😂😂 also screw them haters. I never read the letters pages aside from a couple because it's kinda annoying to read through all of these people complaining and stuff so I prefer to just ignore that garbage.
Just used your video to double check, but the 1st edition of this omnibus has only 558 pages, so 90 new pages in the new edition. Other than a couple pages of pencil sketches none of the extras you showed are in the 1st edition.
I don't think anybody is troll or whatever if they tell that they don't like something! Now that they could have said that in a much nicer way that's different. I remember when I read the introductions for these in Masterworks and I think I would agree with the fans mostly, you cannot return to a title and just do what you like ignoring almost everything what happened in the meantime, I think that is irresponsible and disrespectful for the fans. We really have many examples when certain things happened in comic books because many fans asked for or they were deciding, so I think they should have listened more to fans especially after certain things were brought to the attention several time. I am not very happy about this Omnibus, I don't know what's the purpose of it and why they couldn't just reach it with the normal volume numbering. Now what we should do? Buy it and when the Omnibus series reaches this era sell it? Or not to buy it and maybe the Omnibus series will not even get this far??? Not very clever in my opinion.
I kind of understand the people from the letters pages. They were enjoying a book, then this person came and shifted the tone disregarding what the book was being about. We defend Kirby only because he's Kirby.

One thing I was noticing is the page count. Your page numbers in the omni are higher than mine, I guess for the letter pages (missing in first edition).
Still personally I think the quality of the original omni is good enough to not justify an upgrade.
Wow! I want it!!!!
5:16 Peanuts, dumplings, suitcase nukes, dirty bombs and then the real big bad bombs. It sounds reasonable to me.
Have you ever done a review of the Stan Lee Captain America omnibus? It seems to be the only Cap omnibus I haven’t seen an Individual review on. It’s out of print I believe, but luckily I bought it before it went OOP. I would love to see you review it one day, for sure.
Interesting seeing Henry Kissinger appear in the comics, especially given his stance on nuclear weapons.
I have the first print but you just sold me another Omnibus Omar...:-0 I really like to know of improvements with Omni please do it for all of them as they are reissued.
great overview as always my brother
Much appreciated, my dood!
This, Hickman FF Vol 1 and TOD v2 are my most wanted reprints.
Well one out of three ain’t bad. :)
Well one out of three ain’t bad. :)
i'm going with th standard edition cover. i like this run but it doesnt even look or feel like anywhere in the rest of the 616. if you like bicentennial battles try the captain america corp. its written by uncle rog , roger stern. i can't wait to start getting all these omnis coming out this year. january 26th seems to be crawling to get here.
"Distinguished Competition"... I'm not sure if that was done on purpose, but that was low key clever lol
Lee was calling DC the Distinguished Competition all throughout the 70s.
@@marseclipsed5451 Still clever
I read these stories in real time in the seventies. I remember being confused, not that letter writers could be critical, but that the criticism was published. Letter pages were always so positive and rah-rah-rah about the comics. It’s a shame the marvel staff took it upon themselves to decide what was “quality” and what was not.
Very Nice
Cheers to everyone there 😊😊
Every time Omar mentioned the tones, I laughed thinking of Gwildor of Masters of the Universe fame or infamy depending on the viewer.
HAHAHA Gwildor. I love that little guy.
These classic omnis are the best! I just wish they would reprint (again) fantastic four omnis 2 and 3 and maybe even a volume 4.
Page 260 convinced me to get this omni.
I’ve been looking through some silver age Cap lately and came to the conclusion that it contains some of Kirby’s best work ever.
He is the master!
I’m still undecided if I’m going to upgrade from the tps.
Cowabunga fellow minties 🤙
Did you ever put the contents up to read on the video? I must have missed it.
I never did. Not really anyone asked me to.
This seems like a great upgrade.
Is this the same restoration they did for the masterworks?
From what I heard, yes.
Do you know if they are doing a Hulk reprint??
You know, it's kind of refreshing to know Kirby wasn't above criticism (fair or not) back then. Frank Miller has been roasted as well for his Dark knight sequels and AS-Batman. I guess this second stint makes a good argument for Thomas Wolfe's saying: "You can't go back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time".
Having said that, I was sort of on the fence about this book but I think I'll be getting it.
Nice
Thanks
Hey Omar, any word on Marvel putting out Ta Nehisi Coates’s Captain America Deluxe vol. 2?
Yes sir. Comes out in June I believe.
Yeah those letter pages don’t seem surprising, fandom really hasn’t evolved since then.
Dang you got this early!
Good vid
Thank you.
Kirby is amazing but it took me a while to appreciate him too. Also, as I understand it, "The Bicentennial Battles" was produced specifically to celebrate America's Bicentennial.
It completely was.
Has 2001 ever been collected in any format?
I don't believe so.
Jack kirby was one of the most mistreated people to ever work in comics!
Gang of algorithms x4! :)
lmao Big Daddy is an ominous name indeed for a bomb
By giving the different sizes of Mad Bombs the cutesy names of Peanut, Dumpling, and Big Daddy, I think Kirby was alluding to the real-life nuclear bombs Little Boy (dropped by the US on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945) and Fat Man (dropped by the US on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945). It's creepy that such tremendously destructive real-life weapons had these cute, playful names.
I didn't even think about that Imran. Man, thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Funny how people keep saying there wasn’t any politics in books in the past
Such an original comment, never heard that one before.
@@mrawesome3915 and yet 90% of people still somehow think that politics weren't infused into all media prior to 2016
Never read the 70s cap stuff from Jack before aside from the swine portion and forward.
I love Kirby, but is it really necessary for every sentence he writes to end with an exclamation mark?
It’s just a matter of preference!!!
Just used your video to double check, but the 1st edition of this omnibus has only 558 pages, so 90 new pages in the new edition. Other than a couple pages of pencil sketches none of the extras you showed are in the 1st edition.
Were the letter pages in there, sir?
@@NearMintCondition No letters pages either.
Yeah so this one is so much better. FF 2 reprint is also going to have new scans
@@NearMintCondition I think this is the first time Marvel is adding content to a reprint. No new stories, but 90 pages of extras is quite a bit.
Well, we did get Squadron Supreme and Eternals expanded. So sort of the first time.
Some of the most patriotic AND good pieces of media tend to, in my experience, come from immigrants like Kirby. As soon as I can I'm getting this.
It’s great.
We don't appreciate things until we loose them.
Tin hat well and truly on but I thought this run was dreadful - almost unreadable
Algorithm gang x2!
I kind of understand the people from the letters pages. They were enjoying a book, then this person came and shifted the tone disregarding what the book was being about. We defend Kirby only because he's Kirby.
I get it. Reminds me of Claremont coming back to X-men. New readers reading new X-men would be so confused.
Jack earned the right to do whatever he wanted. He created the Marvel Universe. Sure, this book is different from standard Cap.So what? Its awesome!!
Algorithm gang x3!
Jack Kirby gang
Jack Kirby gang indeed.
