I love mine!!! I just used my Lansky in it today and put a super sharp mirror edge on it. Just a great knife, I could go on and on telling how much I love this knife.
Picked one of these up today based on this video. Was going to get a 940-1 but couldn't justify the extra money. So happy I made that choice. This is some of the nicest feeling g10 I have ever touched.
Jmuk35 ...Mine sure did. Had some blemishes in the G10 too. I agree with LBS @ 10:59...it **MAY** be the very best EDC on the planet...if (and this is a big IF) Benchmade gets around to upgrading their QC. Seriously, for the price, ZT is smoking them on materials, fit, finish, and overall QC. A stellar design such as this deserves more consistent production.
I just received this BM 940 knife today 05/17/2019 and it is absolutely beautiful with the green aluminum scales and purple back spacer with the fantastic axis lock deployment is very smooth and it is extremely razor sharp this is my 3rd BM and not my last. :-)
Just bought one about 2 weeks ago, the 940-2, G-10. Love it. put my other knives back in their boxes. Perfection, and the G-10 feels so solid in hand. Paid $149.00 plus tax for mine at Mark's Outdoors in Birmingham. Great Review!
If u want the G10 version u REALLLLY need to see the 940-1501 the blue lines are impecable with blue annodized spacers. Sort of a mix btw 940-1 and 940-2
I have the 940 & a -1 CF and love them both! I'm really liking the G-10 look, but I'd get the Knifeworks Exclusive. There's just something about the Black & Blue that blows me away. Great review Sir, thanks.
When my grandpa passed away he gave me some money. It right burned a hole in my pocket and my old K55K was getting thin in the gumb line. So I got a 940-2 for $139.95. Best money I ever spent on a lock blade knife. And it fits well in my coveralls, so its easy to snatch when I need it. Man I wish I had another K55K though. That knife was as slim as a knife could get, had a pretty good German steel that took an edge quick and held it long enough for this working man's taste. I just wish this lock back design was on the K55K with maybe some upgraded steel and a lanyard hole instead of a bail. Yep for $40 you just can't beat those knives even if you tried you can't for the money. I bet I could sell this 940-2 and buy 4 of my K55K knives. Hand 3 out to show people what a real knife is for the pocket. I tried all these over the years. And the K55K Otter keeps coming back to my pocket. I have to agree... After seeing this video I ordered one and it is amazing. I already own the Benchmade 940-1501(Blue & Black G10), and I have to say that I like the 940-2 better. It feels better in my hand and I like the slight differences in the handle. It's also a little easier to get to the thump studs. Thanks for the great review.
Just received this model as a gift from my daughter, I'm not one to spend much over 100 bucks for a knife & this is my first Benchmade knife. I have several Spyderco knives and a ZT 0450 in Carbon fiber that I love to carry but I think this model Benchmade has toppeled the 0450 out of my pocket for the time being. Well made and as you pointed out perfect balance to boot! well done Benchmade!!
I would love to know what pocket clips are supposed to be on what knives. I know a lot of the fakes have the USA on the clips. But I also see a lot of real knives that don't. I know the anodizing is way of on the fakes. Can you maybe talk a little about the changes over time or things to look out for?
I have the 940-1501 Knifeworks exclusive with blue and black G-10, and CPM-20CV steel. Love it to pieces! The balance point is exactly the same as what you were showing with the 940-2, and its got Blue anodized standoffs
Just ordered this knife. Going to see if it will replace the Benchmade 417 Fact as my edc. More blade width and about the same footprint. But the Fact is almost 4" and I love the look.of it.
Shane, thank you for the video! It's 3 months later; what is your most carried EDC knife since the video came out? Has this taken the top spot in your EDC rotation?
Used to own a 940-1 awhile ago, unfortunately it was stolen while I was at work. Have been really wanting another 940 ever since, hands down my favorite knife I've ever carried, didn't want to spend the money on another 940-1 and I didn't care much for the classic design (personal preference), then I discovered the 940-2, and I MUST have this blade. Similar design elements to the 940-1 but wont break the bank, perfect. Plus S90V was a pain to sharpen.
Mine finally came today. I'm mostly a collector of classic knives with some sort of lock. But I wanted to get a more modern folder. Your video here really helped me, and I can say this will never leave my collection. Cheers. I'm referring to the 940-2, btw and thanks again.
I didn't originally like how the 940 looked but after I thought about how much more useful it would be to have a longer thinner blade, I've started to lust for one.
How do you feel about it today? I have a stronger preference for the 940 design now that every other knife is built with tall, thin blades and a frame lock.
Picked up a first production run even though I really didn't have the money for it, but I don't regret buying it. I'm just waiting for a deep carry clip to come in from Benchmade.
I want this knife so bad, I can't explain it. I regret trading my 940, this line of knives are my all-time favorite. Definitely getting a 940-2 for Christmas!
i don't know about everyone else but i like saying "my pocket knife has full carbon fiber handles and a blade made from an exotic super steel" better than "my knife's balance point is 1 centimeter better than the other 2 iterations of it"
I agree, I love the 940-2. I later put the blade from a 943 on the -2's frame since my EDC requirements need a pointy tip. I prefer it this way. I put the 940-2 blade on the 943 frame. The aluminum frame definitely feels sturdier. With the swapped blades, I feel like I have a knife version of either a Lamborghini or a Ford Raptor in my pocket.
my friend at work had one and i didnt play with it enough, now i find myself wanting one. ive been liking frame locks lately and edc a zt 0450 but i dont own any benchmades. for when i dont want to carry an ultratech, pm2, or manix i think i may need a 940...-2...but lately ive been wanting a zt 0562 also. so many decisions
I recently got a -2 because of this video as well but I kinda wish I went with the green aluminum only because I hear it does have a bit of grip to it, the g10 is very smooth on on the -2, but still a great knife.
Go figure the best one in the line up is also the lowest priced. I have the -1 and -2. Love em both and I firmly believe the 940's are the best all around EDC knife a person can carry. Light, slim, good blade, comfortable grip and on and on etc. If you are a young person reading this and don't own many or any knives. Get the 940 that appeals to you and never walk back into a knife shop again. Unless it needs blade work or you need sharpeners. Don't do what so many before you have done. Get addicted to knives. Just find the one and stick to it. Over time they gain character from use.
I have had an Ontario RAT 1 in D2 for a few months now. It's the best pocket folding blade that I've had. It's not nearly so pricey as a 940. It's a bit heavy at 4.9 oz, but dang, it acts sturdy. It's about 3.5", but the blade is beefier than the 940, and the handle has more bolsters, and has heavier, solid liners. I tend to favor multitool knives like a Swiss Army knife or a Leatherman Crater, but for a large-ish pocket blade, I really like this RAT 1, so far. And if I lose it, it wouldn't hurt like losing a 940.
thanks review and as i am thinking of getting a backup to 940-1 reason being that the springs do break (mine 3 times) as love the knife so much Benchmade should spend more money to improve the springs. The only knock for me in looking at the knife (other than the springs) the blade of the 940-1 is its great stonewash ond would want that on my backup blade. ie 940-2
Wish you would show us blade wiggle (if any). On slender/long folders I get nervous that once you do some heavy cutting or some light prying that the blade will wiggle. I find that aluminum adds rigidity over the non-metalic handles (e.g. AWT scales).
I'm pretty much set on getting a 940 as my next knife purchase! Though...I see on knifeworks that they have a 940 exclusive collaboration with cpm-20cv steel. I wonder how would that compare to the 940-2?
When you pulled out the scale, I expected a more enthusiastic "2.6 Ounces!!! WHAAAT!!!" in Nutnfancy's voice. Love the review and my 940's, but for the record Nutnfancy definitely gets more excited about lightweight edc.
When you carry 6 knives, 4 multi tools, a gun, a taser, two mags, pepper spray, level 1 medical kit, chapstick, sunscreen, a coin purse, 3 flashlights and more, mostly all in a fanny pack the ounces really add up! Gotta love nutn's pilot mentality when it comes to gear and weight.
+ssbrosking36 That seems like a strangely arbitrary value, personally. In my experience the dimensions and ergonomics often matter more so than the weight, but I can appreciate those who want to save a few ounces on their edc. All my knives pretty much fall in the 3-4oz range with my 940-1 being one of the lightest I own. I sometimes carry it in slacks because it fits the roles I'd likely use it for in that scenario. It has the advantage of being slim and easy to carry in a pocket. Normally I have a Spyderco PM2 which is bigger and almost 4 oz, but it's the dimensions that I notice and not the weight.
It is arbitrary. But even a little bit of weight in such low levels can separate something that feels very sturdy from not as much. IMO the PM2 is about as perfect as it gets. Huge knife for a lot of public uses but the added weight just makes it feels more rugged. I think you're right though. It's most likely a placebo.
Mine is a Carbon Fiber 940-1 and the balance point is exactly as that 940-2 you're demonstrating. It has a tougher blade (s90v) and is lighter knife in general. Although that 940-2 looks pretty great, especially for the price, but I'd still pick the CF 940-1. GREAT REVIEW!
Once I saw the G10, green spacers and 2.6 ounces.. I bought one! I never did like the aluminum, its pretty but makes my teeth grind when my nails scratch on it.
Can't remember which model but a benchmade was my first high end knife i ever bought... now I'm into zero tolerance knifes, but I'm thinking about picking up a Barrage and a Griptilian Tomorrow
The original 940 cost $185.00 the 940-2 costs $170.00 and the 940-1501 costs $200.00. So paying $15.00 more than the original 940 for the 940-1501 for the black/blue layered g10 and 20cv blade is worth it!! cpm 20cv is one of my favorite blade steels, much better than cmp s30v.
Aluminum is good looking (when it's new) but when the surface is smooth I drop them. I default to GFN or G10. I was given a Boker Mini Kalishnakof that is an exception. Cool desk knife but who's gonna "work" with that?
I have a Mediator (wanted a 9400 but also wanted an s90v blade. Mediator was the closest thing to the 9400 auto so I got it) have a Bugout, and a 940-2. I love them all. I just bought the 940-2. Idk why I went with the 940-2. I think it was the black with the green barrel spacers idk. Not a fan of the aluminum scales. Loved the g10 on the Mediator so I went with G10 for the 940. I also have a couple Spyderco knives. I can carry the Bugout and the mediator or the Bugout and the 940 in the same pocket and never notice them. If I put the Spyderco in my pocket I can’t hardly get my hand in and out of my pocket.
Great video! I had a question... Well I have a Griptilian 551-1, which is my first Benchmade. How would you say the new 940 series offering compares to the 551-1 for general pocket carry? I love the 551 and I'm very sure it won't be my last Benchmade.
I remember when the 940 could be had for $120. Then it quickly went up to $140 then $180. I bought a PM2 for $90 and it's been flawless for years of hard use.
Until the bencmade crap springs break ! I have 3 benchmades crooked river large crap in a box ( delivered unfinished then the springs broke )! The mini was perfect but it was delivered with one spring broken then the other ! Bought the 940 used to avoid benchmade quality control that blows goats ( I have proof ) then like in the first 6 months the springs broke on all 3 ! I love these knives design so I fixed them all ( instead of throwing them in the garbage ) and replaced the axis lock springs with ganzo (G) lock springs from ganzo knives I bought for parts (G) lock spring have never broken in the years that I have bought them ! And I have bent some of them more than once to lighten the poundage !
Am I the only one distracted by that smudge on the blade? The whole video, I kept hoping Shane would give the blade a good wipe. Regardless..it was another great informative video.
Personally I'd rather have the 940-1501 Knifeworks exclusive. Eye popping blue/black g10 and matching anodized backspacers, 20 cv (which for my preference beats s30v), and it's only 30 more bucks than this while looking much better
In my opinion the 940-1501 is the best version of the 940 Osborne ever produced by Benchmade! The 940-1501 is an unlimited/non serialized exclusive from www.knifeworks.com. The 940-1501 has great looking layered black/blue g10 handle scales, and an awesome CPM 20cv blade. It only costs $200.00, that's $15.00 more than the original 940. Everyone needs to check it out.
Ok guys, this model is the best in line but the real question is: 940-2 is the best pocket knife from Benchmade or Griptilian (just for ex.) is better?
It looks as though they updated the G-10 on the 940-2, It appears grippier now, not liking it quite as much. I like the carbon fiber version the best but not for an extra $100! I gotta get one just not sure which. Hey do you have any experience with the Houge OTF knives? Any good? Thanks!
Hi Shane, Great review. I will be taking a closer look at the 940 lineup. One thing I dont agree with is the way that Benchmade does its black coating. I find it one of the worst on the market. If its a user, it will look horrible. Compared to a user PM2 with black coating which will still look good. Have you had good luck with the BM blackl coating?
Not trying to be an ass but since you have a ruler and a weight scale in two units you could also show the dimensions in cm and weight in grams and it would take you 5 extra seconds.
I agree. Obviously it doesn't change the quality of the videos, but it would be very useful if he uses both systems. I bet that a big part of the subscribers uses the metric system.
Hundred bucks cheaper than the 940-1 and only .2 oz heavier? Hell yes. Love G10 and S30V should sharpen easier. Great great review. Love the comparisons.
I like this version of the 940, but has anybody ever had a problem with there blades getting scratched or chipped from other things in your pocket, due to the mostly open back by using barrel spacers?
I have several knives that have a sort of open-back design like this one, and I've never had issues with the blade chipping or scratching because of it.
I vote for the 940 as the all time best EDC period.
Want to try this one for a week or so? Might change your mind. :)
+The Late Boy Scout so scout are you saying the 940-2 is the best of all ( out of the 940's)

The 940-1501 is a Knifeworks exclusive, in case people are wondering. Check it out at Knifeworks.com.
Aluminum is good looking (when it's new) but when the surface is smooth I drop them. I default to GFN or G10. I was given a Boker Mini Kalishnakof that is an exception. Cool desk knife but who's gonna "work" with that?
Ur missing one of the production 940-1501 that is Knifeworks exclusive with black/blue G10 and CPM-20CV steel
I can't decide between the 940 and the griptillian G-10 as my work knife. (strong tip is preferred) Thank-you
I've broken the tip on a sv30 mini grip. Imho, the reverse tanto in any of the 3 steels that the 940 comes in will be stronger.
The Benchmade 940-1501 version from knifeworks seems like a much better option imo. CPM-20CV (M390) steel is wickedly good too ~
My all time favourite 940 is the Gold Class 940DM, all Damascus. Was limited to only 100, so forget ever buying one.
I just got mine today at a pawn shop for 119! It's brand new too not used the guy selling just didn't know the real price
Ya... i have alot of nerf darts just hanging around the house. Thanks for the informative comparison. :/
Couldn't have used a dollar or a soda can or something
Its olmost 3inchs
Great video! I had a question... Well I have a Griptilian 551-1, which is my first Benchmade. How would you say the new 940 series offering compares to the 551-1 for general pocket carry? I love the 551 and I'm very sure it won't be my last Benchmade.
I recently got this knife. It's my first 940. I 💚 it! (yes, green heart lol)
Thats the first knife in the 940 series that Ive been interested in . I like that alot , and the carbon fiber one .
I remember when the 940 could be had for $120. Then it quickly went up to $140 then $180. I bought a PM2 for $90 and it's been flawless for years of hard use.
I just got my last night its awesome and I love it
Which model dart did you show? Looks like an exclusive ....
I agree, 940-2 best EDC, now to make it even better, with cpm 20cv, please talk to your friends at Benchmade.
Cheak out the 940-1501. G10 and CPM- 20cv
I prefer the 560 freak over the 940-2 just because of the rubberized handle it has a lot of grip the 940 is still very nice though i have both !!
Am I the only one distracted by that smudge on the blade? The whole video, I kept hoping Shane would give the blade a good wipe. Regardless..it was another great informative video.
I have both the original and the -2 and I prefer the original it is a tad less Finicky and easier to keep the blade centered
the central avenue gunslinger I feel like you lying because there practily all the same besides the Handel material and blade steel
Yeah, that's most likely just the difference between the two individual knives and not the difference between the two models, if that makes sense.
Great review! You sold me with the review. I just bought one :D
Personally I'd rather have the 940-1501 Knifeworks exclusive. Eye popping blue/black g10 and matching anodized backspacers, 20 cv (which for my preference beats s30v), and it's only 30 more bucks than this while looking much better
Is the 940-2 as strong as the OG 940???
i cant decide between 940-1 or 940-2, i like the look of the original but ive heard a few people say the sharpness is never up to par. is that true?
The CLA is another phenomenal EDC as well. 😎
My favorite is the 940-1 and by the way S90V is the heaviest because of its density
I don't know if you have a Benchmade Freek, but if you do, would you recommend the 940-2 or the Freek?
Awesome blade...I needed up with #896
Would you recommend the 940-2 or the new g-10 griptilian for EDC? Great channel and love your reviews.
real question here? which is better
Ok guys, this model is the best in line but the real question is: 940-2 is the best pocket knife from Benchmade or Griptilian (just for ex.) is better?
I just ordered one from blade HQ . Can't wait
When you first got your 940-2, did it has smoothed out, or rubbed out areas on the G-10 scales? I'm trying to figure out if mine came used. Thanks!
It looks as though they updated the G-10 on the 940-2, It appears grippier now, not liking it quite as much. I like the carbon fiber version the best but not for an extra $100! I gotta get one just not sure which.
Hey do you have any experience with the Houge OTF knives? Any good? Thanks!
I'd want the Carbon Fiber version, balance doesn't mean much to me. As far as overall EDC, that's my ZT0560. Hasn't been out of my pocket in 4 years.
What is a nerf dart? Everyday item I think not. Otherwise a nice review.
I want one. It's not a need item but it's at the top of the want list.
if you are going to compare it to "everyday" items use a standard size Bic lighter. more universal imho
Brian Jones some people are smart enough not to inhale black tar into their lungs.
Just wish the G10 had some texture to it instead of being slippery. This is where my G10 Paramilitary 2 excels.
Not trying to be an ass but since you have a ruler and a weight scale in two units you could also show the dimensions in cm and weight in grams and it would take you 5 extra seconds.
And I don't want to start the usual bashing of the imperial system here, just pointing out.
Look at the ruler for CM. Or do the conversion yourself. Scout is in America so he used inches and ounces.
+wojtekimbier leave the bashing to me: imperial system is retarded :^)
+wojtekimbier ortho it is an unfortunate system lol.
The only downside are the green standoffs? Why green? A darker more subtle colour would be nicer, a dark blue or purple for example.
Do you plan on doing a review on the cold steel broken skull? I'd love to hear your feedback on it.
I've waffled back and forth on buying that one. Still haven't picked on up.
I think the name is idiotic but the blade steel and thin/light profile makes it seem like a worthy compromise.
I’m gonna get myself the 940 and I’m gonna mod it a bit👍
I wish they would make one with M390. A salt water one would be cool too!
Would you recommend this 940-2 or the 698 foray as a better overall edc?
Great review! Random question, what g shock model is that?
I just ordered a 940-2 from Going Gear, now I have 3 Benchmade 940.
Hey great video. How aggressive is the texturing on that g10?? If there is much at all.
It's pretty smooth G10.
